Yi Not Traveling With Nets

The Nets open a four-game West Conference swing Monday in Memphis but Yi Jianlian won't be making the trip. Yi left the Garden Saturday with a very long boot to protect his high ankle spain.  Although he said the sprain wasn't "too bad", there's no timetable for his return to action.  It is, of course, Yi's third major injury this season and he now seems  unlikely to play in much more than 50 games.

No word yet on who will replace him in the starting lineup with Josh Boone and Kris Humphries the two most likely candidates.

Thanks Yi

Now we cannot blame Yi for our troubles.

by NDTony on Mar 7, 2010 3:21 PM EST reply actions

I'll take my chances

So if we win a few more games, then could we go back and blame Yi for some of the past losses?
It works both ways.

Only thing is now there is little margin for error, in terms of more injuries.

Boone Starts

I like to leave Hump on the bench and start Boone.

by NDTony on Mar 7, 2010 3:23 PM EST reply actions

Do you really think Boone is all that great?

He’s basically a poor man’s Jason Collins.

The Legend

by Brifeib on Mar 7, 2010 3:56 PM EST up reply actions

No way. Jason Collins was a far better player.

by MyNetsForLife on Mar 7, 2010 4:26 PM EST up reply actions

Jason is better defensive, but Josh is better offensive (within 5 feet).

Nets need to bring up best DLeague PF.
He would be better than Yi, Boone and Collins.

by jerry25 on Mar 7, 2010 6:19 PM EST up reply actions

If only Josh could hit free throws at 60% like he is capable (if not for a mental problem) then he would be an Okay 2nd backup PF/C.

He may even be available to pickup an Vets Min by late August. There will be sooo many FAs this year (thanks to LBJ).
Teams won’t have cap space so they will have to sign at Vets. Min.
I would take him if Nets don’t do better with draft.

Therefore it may not be correct to say he won’t be playing with Nets next year. Josh wants to return.

YIIIEEEEEES!

good now we can maybe win a game or 2. he has to go he is so weak in games and gets hurt way to much. hopefully this finally shows mangment how we dont need him and how bad he is. worst trade in nets history. thats why we came back and beat the knicks after he left.

by mike243nj on Mar 7, 2010 3:24 PM EST reply actions

We will be better w/o him. Now Twill and CDR can get minutes. Dust off Batie and Boone. The Yi years are over: poor player, soft, injury prone, not worthy of the high pick, not close to the hype. He has been injured every year.

by oman8 on Mar 7, 2010 3:27 PM EST reply actions

The next Dirk goes down

forgot to add a career 39% shooter at 7 feet! Wow. Kiki you sure know how to pick them! Randolph would torch him, at least Boone can make players work for points.

by oman8 on Mar 7, 2010 3:29 PM EST reply actions

Get Well Yi

but I’m confident we are now a much better team without him. Maybe next year Yi will be a decent bench player. But then again, if we sign a David Lee, I’d much rather have a Humphries coming off the bench as his replacement.

by giacomo on Mar 7, 2010 3:29 PM EST reply actions

Oppurtunity

They way the Nets are playing, this injury can lead to the quality PT/contribution from the 4. I don’t know what the deal is with Boone, but I see Humphies getting minutes and since they counldn’t but out Battie, they might as well use him. Go Nets!

by Ely Younger on Mar 7, 2010 3:35 PM EST reply actions

Good riddance

Never wish injury on a player but he is dreadful and we will be better without him. He was getting TORCHED during the first quarter of the knick game and as soon as he went out (I was at the game) a knick fan behind me goes “Yi just got hurt, watch the Nets comeback.”

by NetsKiNG on Mar 7, 2010 3:38 PM EST reply actions

haha

I was at the game too and at first I thought it was Hump down and was throwing a fit but then when I realized it was Yi I guaranteed to my buddy next to me who’s a Knicks fan that the Nets would win and he just rolled his eyes. Needless to say, I looked pretty damn smart when the Nets erased the 16 point deficit and ended up winning by 20.

The Legend

That’s great! Nice call. Must have felt great to watch the Nets trash the Knicks on their own court!

Humphries for Starting PF in 10-11

He plays with energy, passion, hustle…their is no reason why Humphries isn’t a starting PF in this league…

by Christopher Manchesi on Mar 7, 2010 3:53 PM EST reply actions

Energy, passion, hustle

Those are the ideal traits of a quality backup big man. However, he’s simply not polished enough on either side of the ball to receive starter’s minutes on a good team.

Kiki

Not playing Yi. What is everyone going to say now? Quick think up a new conspiracy!

by Malorkayel on Mar 7, 2010 4:02 PM EST reply actions

i'm sure if it was THAT cut out and dry

someone would have done it already. D-League stars don’t necessarily become NBA contributors.

"Hip-Thrust!"

by hardgay on Mar 7, 2010 9:35 PM EST up reply actions

Most teams have set rosters and already have NBA level PFs

Not the Nets with injured Yi and Battie and a borderline Boone. Worst Forwards in NBA history.

by jerry25 on Mar 8, 2010 7:53 AM EST up reply actions

Other teams have already brought up DLeaguers this year

I think a fair percentage of NBA players experienced the DLeague at some point.

Financially, it is very easy, as long as a team has a roster spot.

by jerry25 on Mar 8, 2010 8:41 AM EST up reply actions

Boone

What I like about Boone is that he’s an active body. He’s got some athleticism for his size which I think helps Brook a bit. Boone’s not a savior by any means but he can give us good minutes.

by SamsHops on Mar 7, 2010 4:33 PM EST reply actions

yesssss

no yi thank god. The nets would be stupid not to sign a D league player now. Our win percetage should rise about 50 % with YIKKKES out

by SPiDER MAN on Mar 7, 2010 4:34 PM EST reply actions

Boone is solid...

and has been a Net longer than anyone else on the team. I think he knows his game and plays within his limits. The savvy veteran.

Even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then.

@ mike243nj – Um, yeah, I’m not so sure about that. Look at the schedule:

Monday @ Memphis 8:00 PM EST (32-31)
Wednesday @ Dallas 8:30 PM EST (43-21)
Friday @ Houston 8:00 PM EST (31-30)
Saturday @ Oklahoma City 8:30 PM EST (37-24).

More playing time for Humph

I would like to see Humphries elevated to the starting lineup in Yi’s absence. I like Humphries overall but would like to see him opt out of his contract to free up some additional cap space. Perhaps Humprhies can use this opportunity to play himself into position to set himself for a multi year deal from a team, whether it be the Nets or someplace else.

by Chris2 on Mar 7, 2010 5:40 PM EST reply actions

Kiki won’t start Hump, because he wants to keep a rotation.
He will get way more minutes though.

by jerry25 on Mar 7, 2010 9:01 PM EST up reply actions

!

This should be really great. I think Boone and Jacob(hump) are both very similar players. I don’t care who starts as long as Hump finishes the game,,, with his good FT shooting abilities. This is going to be a great match up and great game for our bigs against Memphis’s bigs.

This is REALLY going to play into the game they should be playing, fast paced, tons of hustle, and lots of energy!

by Tim823 on Mar 7, 2010 6:11 PM EST reply actions

60% FT

hump is a career 60% FT shooter…that’s good FT shooting to you?

by jirohkanzaki on Mar 7, 2010 10:21 PM EST up reply actions

Was I the only one who commented that Kiki didn't look too happy after last night's win?

Barring further injuries, I predict Nets will finish season better than Knicks

Knicks have won 2 of last 11 games.
Nets have won 3 games, all on the road.

As I said at the beginning of year, its how you finish that counts.

If Nets win 3 more games soon, then all the disaster-searching media will switch to the Knicks incompetence.
D’Antoni should start worrying.

by jerry25 on Mar 7, 2010 6:32 PM EST reply actions

Hey, see Yi later!

The team is better off without Yi.
When he comes back, I don’t want him starting. He can’t get that many minutes on the court since he plays terrible defense and doesn’t hit shots consistently enough. And he just screws up the flow on offense. Also, does he ever roll after the pick? Maybe, but he always seems to pop out instead to clank another 15 footer. And his rare drives to the hoop end up in turnovers…
Can we just sit this guy till he has another off-season to learn to play defense and toughen up in general?

by NetsJetsFan on Mar 7, 2010 6:43 PM EST reply actions

Media no longer has to address the Kiki/Yi situation

This injury happened at the perfect time or else the media would have to address the Kiki – 40 min/game Experiment situation.

Now the reporters can just ignore the problem that has been developing, unless of course Yi returns in a couple of weeks. If Yi immediately is given 40 minutes of PT again, even if it was clear that Nets were better without him, then they will have to address the problem.

by jerry25 on Mar 7, 2010 9:08 PM EST reply actions

For the record

Does anyone remember Yi’s contribution during the 7 wins?
I thought he missed at least the first 2 wins, due to injury, but not sure about the 3rd win.
The story says that he had already missed 24 games.

During these past 3 road wins, he was clearly bad in the Boston game and was pulled for Q4.
I believe the 2nd Bobcat win had a similar scenario.
We know the outcome of yesterday’s Knicks win.

That leaves the first Knick win and maybe one other win that he might have played and contributed – but I can’t recall.

Before closing the book on Yi, maybe someone impartial can let us know.

We all know that there were too many games where he contributed to losses that could have been wins, but then he wasn’t the only culprit.

by jerry25 on Mar 7, 2010 9:17 PM EST reply actions

In the first win over the Knicks in December, Yi had a team-high of 22pts…

by PhilNYC on Mar 8, 2010 7:00 AM EST up reply actions

Boone can’t shoot

and

that’s his biggest disadvantage…

Yi couldn’t shoot recently though.

by Jarkid Shen on Mar 7, 2010 9:52 PM EST reply actions

At least now Hump has the jumpers, so we can try Boone at starting 4 again.

by Jarkid Shen on Mar 7, 2010 9:59 PM EST reply actions

yi...

better hope t will doesn’t have a crappy game the next few games and nets lose or yi haters will be red in the face!!!

anyway, a rotation of lee, twill and cdr at the 2/3 spots would be nice to see…there is no reason to play hayes and hassell as they won’t be on the nets after this season.

boone is back on the rotation, let’s see how the nets win a lot of games with him now that “the biggest reason for nets’ losses is now out…”
i like to see hump getting more minutes tho…tho hump definitely is no better than yi it IS true that yi is getting an inordinate amount of minutes than hump.

by jirohkanzaki on Mar 7, 2010 10:18 PM EST reply actions

I know I'll probably get attacked for saying this, BUT

…We still have Bobby Simmons (til the end of the season) don’t we? I know he’s hardly an answer to our prayers (of ANY description), but he has played minutes at the 4 in the past. Is it not worth at least giving him a game here or there if we need the backup? The Knicks game showed us fans what the Nets can do if they’re spreading the floor and draining their jumpers, and while there’s a lot of things that Simmons can’t do, shooting isn’t one of them (forgive the double-negative there lol).

“Is it not worth at least giving him a game here or there if we need the backup?”

No. Unless TWill, Hayes, Hassell, Boone, Hump, and Battie are all hurt he should never play another game for the Nets. Ever.

I hear what you’re saying but again look who is coaching need I say more?

by Mikee21 on Mar 8, 2010 3:13 AM EST up reply actions

He plays with energy, passion, hustle…their is no reason why Humphries isn’t a starting PF in this league

Of course he isn’t a starter in this league. He’s better suited as a role player who provides some energy off the bench, and who can produce in limited PT, but he’s not a guy who can start and/ or play more than 25 minutes a night.

Start Boone, who did well next to Lopez when Yi was out earrly in the season, and keep Hump as our 1st big off the bench to try to spark the team with the 2nd unit. I like the fact that Boone plays within his role, unlike Hump, who sometimes believes he’s KG, and whose shot selection is atrocious. Boone knows his limitations and he just fo his thing. Hump is perfect to come off the bench and bring his hustle to try to change the momentum of the game.

I expect a big game from CDR in Memphis. Don’t let me down, Chris!

by Andres B on Mar 8, 2010 5:39 AM EST reply actions

Get well soon Yi...

I have felt that Yi has been wearing down the last month or so. He needs a rest. He plays year round and it’s taking it’s toll.

Next year I hope he comes off the bench. Hopefully we can get ourselves a more traditional PF by then.

I still like Yi and hope he can contribute for this team in the future.
