Game 62 - Nets @ Knicks - Saturday, March 6, 7:30

The Nets and Knicks are, as the Times reports, two halves of an NBA hole.  The two teams have been competing more for cap space than for wins.  The two team have combined for 37 victories and 129 losses this season.  While the Nets have been relatively stable since the two teams' last meeting, the Knicks have six new names on their roster, led by Tracy McGradyEddie House and surprisingly Bill Walker. They're just 2-11 since Feb. 5.  Courtney Lee is expected back, as is the Knicks' Eddy Curry.

Like the Nets, the Knicks lost Friday night.  Even without Chris Bosh, the Raptors beat them, 102-96.  David Lee led the Knicks with 23 points, 18 rebounds and two blocks.

This could be a W

We need to watch out for Eddie House…that guy is dangerous. He gets hot fast and can hit shots like crazy.

I say…start lee and twill together…Kiki put in brook, yi, twill, cdr, and harris during the end of the 4th quarter yesterday…i like that lineup also.

David Lee

NBATV declared David Lee a walking Double-Double. Plus his defense would be better if he was moved to his natural position of PF. The D’Antoni system doesn’t stress defense and he couldn’t be double teamed playing alongside BLopez.

Since the beginning of season I wanted David Lee as the Best Available Free Agent.
Now it should be a No Brainer, yet the Media still rate DLee in the 2nd tier and sometimes his name is even left off that list. I should be happy that his value to the media (and hopefully to the Knicks Management) is minimized. I rate DLee above Amare, Boozer and Joe Johnson (and almost even with Bosh) in terms of who would be best for Nets.

However, can anyone name a FA who would help Nets more? Assuming that LeBron and DWade wouldn’t leave their teams and Bosh wouldn’t come to Nets?

by jerry25 on Mar 6, 2010 7:25 AM EST reply actions

If we get David Lee next year (which I am all for)

who is the best free agent to go along side of him if LeBron and Wade are not available? The SF/SG positions would at that point be our two weakest areas.

by mikeslovak on Mar 6, 2010 7:32 AM EST up reply actions

SF/SG

If Nets get the 46.5% chance for a top two Draft Pick, then Evan Turner would help to solve the SF/SG position, combined with expected improvement of TWill.

Don’t forget DLee could double as backup Center, freeing minutes for Hump and Yi (if not traded) for more minutes at PF.

Of course it would be nice if Nets could get RGay, but that would have been easier if Nets could have freed up some of Yi’s $4 million in cap space.

Getting RGay would however close the door on getting LeBron in 2011, when he should be available for real.

by jerry25 on Mar 6, 2010 7:42 AM EST up reply actions

DLee is very good. He’s improved his passing and outside shooting to the point where these parts of his game have actually become strengths. Consider that he’s played well these past few years with Chris Duhon as his point guard.

He’s also just 26 and doesn’t have nearly the wear/tear/injury history that Amare or Bosh do.

The Knicks trade away essentially three picks so they can use that cap space for DLee? Not buying it.

by TWilliAM on Mar 6, 2010 7:55 AM EST up reply actions

What if Knicks don't renounce DLee

Suppose the Knicks realized by July 1, that LeBron and DWade weren’t leaving their teams.

My fear is that Knicks will realize it would be stupid to let DLee get away for any price.
How would you calculate the Knicks cap space if they don’t Renounce DLee?
In that case, would DLee be able to demand a Max Contract (over $16 million for 6 years) and get his wish? How would it work – Noone has discussed the details, especially in the media.

by jerry25 on Mar 6, 2010 7:32 AM EST up reply actions

McGrady is now a PG

McGrady is now playing PG for Knicks.

Knicks have 2 wins in 8 games since getting McGrady and one of those wins was a last second layup by DLee.

McGrady was having pain in his repaired knee the other day. Seems like Knicks are burning Tracy out, but he doesn’t mind. Does anyone think Knicks are planning to bring back McGrady next year and how much could he demand if he continued to play well?

I think Knick fans would want McGrady and 2 top FAs for their wish list.

David Lee is an atrocious defender. Please, don’t spend the big bucks on another big who couldn’t guard a folding chair. He’s barely worth $7-8M per, but I’m sure he’ll get 10-12.

especially after making the allstar team

by Andy. on Mar 6, 2010 8:05 AM EST up reply actions

Do I think he’s great defensively? No. Do I think he’s better than he’s showed this year? Yes.

Also, there are very few players worth investing in on the FA market. Would you rather give Bosh and his bulky knee brace a max contract? I sure as heck wouldn’t.

Hey, i’d be perfectly happy to save the money and build internally for another season. I don’t see it happening, though.

Netincome?

Anyway to get a “recent comments” feature added to this site…like in the old netsdaily site?

by Andy. on Mar 6, 2010 8:04 AM EST reply actions

The new comments appear in yellow, then change to white.
That may be the best that can be done.

by jerry25 on Mar 6, 2010 8:13 AM EST up reply actions

It would be kool to have a “recent comments” feature on the homepage…i really liked that feature from the old netsdaily site

by Andy. on Mar 6, 2010 8:16 AM EST up reply actions

I wouldn’t give Bosh a max deal (I consider him a bogus superstar and one of the most overrated players in the game), but if you are gonna overpay, at least overpay for a star player, which Lee isn’t. I’d rather give someone like Tyrus Thomas $5-6M per than spend twice that money on Lee.

by Andres B on Mar 6, 2010 8:14 AM EST reply actions

I just typed in ‘Tyrus Thomas and headcase’ and got 6,710 hits.

But on raw talent, he’d be a smart signing at that price.

by TWilliAM on Mar 6, 2010 8:22 AM EST up reply actions

David Lee

I assume the Knicks will try to sign one from LeBron, DWade, Bosh and then have enough for DLee (maybe Amare is backup plan). If they attempt that approach, Nets could certainly have plenty of time steal DLee away “at whatever it takes” Andres!

DLee could be worth millions to the Nets franchise with all the Knicks fans who could easily identify with the Nets after they have a better season and future beginning in 2010-2011 season.

If DLee was playing for the Nets this year in place of Yi, I think the Nets would have about 30 wins by now. That sure sounds like a $7 million player to me!

If Knicks had Yi in place of DLee, they would have about 2 wins this year!

by jerry25 on Mar 6, 2010 8:25 AM EST reply actions

In fantasy land

Lets not get too much into David Lee man love here. The Knicks gave Lee a 1 year contract when no one else wanted him last year. He is productive being the only big, how will he play with Lopez? They both demand a lot of touches and used to having stretch 4s to operate.

Face it, he gets overpowered by bigger centers, one of the reasons Knicks lose. He hasn’t played a single game as PF this season.

He is a good player, a little over-rated right now and wouldn’t give him a max contract. Doubt anyone will.

Just to add here, how many games Nets win this season while Yi was injured, 0. Also, remember he helped beat the Knicks? Just keeping it real.

by Malorkayel on Mar 6, 2010 10:00 AM EST reply actions

How many diid we lose when he was playing? ’Nuff said?

by John at the Jersey Shore on Mar 6, 2010 11:41 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Lee wasn’t taken by any team last year because they knew Knicks would have matched any offer and they would have been wasting valuable time in the process. Lee has proven to be much better than thought, by his play this year.

Bidding will start at $12 million if Knicks are stupid enough to give up their rights to him.

And if Lee was on Nets playing PF, I would like to see Yi defend him.

by jerry25 on Mar 6, 2010 12:34 PM EST up reply actions

Knicks like David Lee so much

They low balled him to a 1 year contract. Yeah really.

by Malorkayel on Mar 6, 2010 5:07 PM EST up reply actions

Knicks screwed up

Knicks screwed up a couple of years ago when they could have re-signed him cheap.

They screwed up again last year, because they didn’t know how good he would become and because Knicks thought (and maybe still do) that they could sign LeBron+DWade or Bosh this year.

by jerry25 on Mar 6, 2010 7:01 PM EST up reply actions

Lee does not require touches to produce double doubles.

I can’t believe Nets fans would balk at signing this guy. Do you all really want another year of that stiff Yi at PF?

You have to make moves. Lee will be a productive player for us, and that’s all that matters. It’s up to the front office to put together a roster where everyone’s skills mesh together to produce wins.

Davis Lee

DLee is player a center more than a forward, we need someone who’s a shooter, to shoot the 3 and can spread the defence for Brook, someone more like Al Harington to replace sand bag legs Yi, Al H. Will burn us today by the way as usual unless Kiki has any BB IQ and will put a faster moving defender on him, like Hump or Boon, but we all know who he will start, his favorite project that hirt the team plainty this season and will end up being traded one day.
So let me get this straight, the RJ trade is a bust, the VC trade is obviously still a project in progress and the JKidd is certainly not in our favor either, drafting outside of Brook has not been a walk in the park, remember S.Will, M. Will, Hasan, A. Wright and others,is there anyone rooting for Kiki or Thorn?

by Marcko on Mar 6, 2010 10:32 AM EST reply actions

D Lee is a shooter now

Have you been watching DLee lately?

The main reason for his increased production is his improvement in outside shooting. I would take him over Yi for 3 pt. shooting at this point. He would have even more opportunity if playing PF with BLopez.

I will be curious to see if DLee puts on a show against the Nets tonight. That would be a sign that he is interested in coming across the Hudson.

by jerry25 on Mar 6, 2010 12:39 PM EST up reply actions

You're saying David Lee is a better shooter than Yi at 3pts.

I’m not even going to pull up stats. You’re being ridiculous. Saying outrageous things for attention.

by Malorkayel on Mar 6, 2010 5:16 PM EST up reply actions

Would you rather have RJ and his $15 million salary for this season and the next?

"Hip-Thrust!"

by hardgay on Mar 6, 2010 5:10 PM EST up reply actions

David Lee can shoot, and the Nets are 6-55, the Knicks have 20 wins so there isn’t really a compariosn.

by Millsj on Mar 6, 2010 11:29 AM EST reply actions

That was a comparison.

David Lee

The Nets need a plan at PF b/c Yi is atrocious and they need 5 legit starters next year, not two. So, they need to upgrade at 3 positions. My fear is that Thorn and Kiki if they are around will try to sell us another year of Yi and only upgrade one position. We are not getting a prime FA. I’d be shocked if we get a FA as good as Johnson or Lee or Gay. Our best bet may be trading for a big. Yes, Lee would be a major upgrade over Yi, but so would 20 other PF’s in the league.

by oman8 on Mar 6, 2010 3:28 PM EST reply actions

I agree with the upgrade at PF, but you know Knicks currently playing Gallo at PF to stretch the floor for David Lee? T-mac is the point guard. David Lee’s stats is artificially inflated at the cost of defense. Knicks can’t match up and is totally under sized at the 4 and 5. Lets see how D. Lee play as PF with Curry at C.
