Booker: "Magic Will Happen in Our City"

The Nets and Newark painted an optimistic picture of the team's future in New Jersey's largest city Friday, with Mayor Cory Booker predicting "Magic will happen in our city".  Booker was joined by Nets CEO Brett Yormark, Devils owner Jeff Vanderbeek, Deputy NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, and Kris Humphries at the Prudential Center press conference.  Yormark said that the team expected to push ticket sales and even hire more sales reps in the near future to handle "significant" new demand anticipated from Essex, Union, and Middlesex counties as well as Manhattan. He added that 56% of those who attended the Nets pre-season games came to Newark via rail.   Meanwhile, Silver said he anticipates the league will probably approve Mikhail Prokhorov as the Nets new owner in "early- to mid-April".

Later, in a CNBC interview, Yormark told Maria Bartiromo that Jay-Z will be a big part of next week's ground breaking.  "He's part of the Nets family", said the CEO, adding that he hopes Jay-Z will be performing at Barclays Center.

"Magic" will happen

yeah…whenever Orlando visits for a game.

On a serious note, they should be close to a .500 team next season. But of course, there’s some hope that they can be much better than that!!

nets all new

I love the final frame of the “Nets All New Commercial” which shows pictures of Rudy Gay, Manu Ginobili, LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, Joe Johnson and David Lee and then says,
“Uniforms Subject to Change.”

No Bosh, Boozer or Amare?

I guess it’s David Lee or bust at PF, oops I meant Yi not bust. Same difference?

Kris Humphries

What is the story with No Bosh, Boozer or Amare? Did I miss something?
Actually I would prefer David Lee and hope that Knicks would be stupid enough to let him go.

What would happen to Yi if Humprhries chooses to stay on and Nets get David Lee?
How could Yi deserve more than 10 minutes a game, since any new coach would recognize that Hump is better than Yi?

by jerry25 on Mar 5, 2010 3:38 PM EST up reply actions

Can David Lee share the ball with Lopez. That’s the bigger question. He is kind of a whiner recently.

Nets/Newark!

Great day and next week Brooklyn.
After the Nets leave Newark in three years there will be a team in Newark.
New Jersey Generals sounds good to me.
F/As are not coming it is a waist of money.
Stick to the program and stay within the draft.

GO BROOKLYN NETS!

Correction

I did also see Chris Bosh and Amar’e Stoudemire. I also saw what appeared to be Paul Pierce? There was no Boozer. They flash them up there really fast and on the computer it’s impossible to pause the video.

What would’ve really hit the spot is if Yi Jianlian was for some reason in there. All of us hope to God his uniform is subject to change.

Either that or they still can’t figure out the anti spam question when registering.

Permanent home

The Nets should have been in Newark years ago. If that was the case, their attendance figures would have been doubled by now. Also, the Prudential Center has all the convinent ways of getting there by both driving and taking mass transit compared to the Meadowlands. If this was done before Ratner bought the team, there would have probably never been the talk of moving them to Brooklyn ever. Then again, with all the delays going with Brooklyn, it’s very possible that Newark can become permanent in the end, giving us real fans the last laugh here.

by Tal Barzilai on Mar 5, 2010 3:27 PM EST reply actions

Real fans?

We differ on the move to BK, Tal, but there’s no Nets fan more real than me, so you must be talking about real New Jersey fans. Still, if you do somehow get the last laugh, I can live with that. Jersey, Brooklyn, whatever, just not the swamp.

Move to Newark is not new

Although it is true that the Prudential Center was only built a few years ago, the idea of moving to Newark goes for at least a decade. It was mainly based on the idea that the Meadowlands could not be accessed by mass transit, so it would be better if the Nets and Devils would move to a place that was near the state’s major transit hub, which happens to be Newark-Penn Station. At the same time, the arena would be easy to get to off of the NJ Tpk (I-95) and the Phillipsburg-Newark Expwy (I-78) whereas the Barclays Center is at least 15-20 blocks in from the BQE (I-278) from either the Atlantic or Flatbush Avenue exits hence that traffic won’t be residual only. Honestly, I won’t miss the Izod Center that much except for the fact that it’s an easy in and out from the NJ Tpk otherwise there is nothing else there of importance, especially since the Xanadau won’t be completed anytime soon, which would at least give me something to do while passing the time before the game starts for being an early bird in getting a good parking spot that won’t be far from the arena or I have to make a long trip from Giants Stadium. Overal, I do support the Nets comming to Newark, but only as a permanent move and not as a stepping stone for Brooklyn, but that’s just me saying this so don’t grill me for stating that view.

by Tal Barzilai on Mar 5, 2010 8:55 PM EST up reply actions

Here's the issue

the reason why the state of New Jersey never supported the move to Newark is that there was no political constituency…no fan base to push and demand, unlike the Giants and Jets…or even the Devils.

It’s another example, beyond attendance, of the lack of fan support and its consequences.

Their fanbase does exist

The ABA was pretty much an epondunk league. Nobody outside of the ABA cities knew about this league. Even though the only championships for the Nets were in the ABA, it went with very little noise. If you tried saying “How about them Nets?” durring the time the ABA existed, nobody would know what you are talking about. The Nets, just like the Nuggets, Spurs, and Pacers, had no major recognition until their jump to the NBA. The reason why the Nets went back to NJ for the first time since their innagural season was because they clearly saw that they could not compete against the Knicks if they stayed a NY team, which is why they decided after their first season as an NBA franchise to go back to NJ. Honestly, they were nomads when playing in Nassau County, because just about every season they moved to a different town throughout that county whereas in NJ they at least have a place where they have been for nearly the last 20 years. The Nets only fanbase came when they were back in NJ, and it was known when the made the NBA Finals back in 2002 and 2003. Those in Brooklyn can never replace them, and most of them will never convert since many of them have been Knicks fans for a very long time.

Bad News, not Good News

The only news I take away is that Prokhorov now won’t get approved until early to mid April.
That means anything could go wrong before then. He wouldn’t be able to get a new coach in time (and a few wins that it would generate).

The questions is whether it is Proky who wants to delay, so as not to have to deal with the blemish of the worst record while he was owner – or is the NBA delaying, so that maybe Michael Jordan could be voted on at the same time???
Previously, Proky said he would get approval right after the Olympics.

New users

Yeah i think a lot of people have new names because they are signed in through facebook or twitter or something. I don’t like sportsnation. Netsdaily used to be a great independant blog who i told everyone about. Now it seems like it is any other blog site bc it is part of a network. I am sure netincome is actually generating revenue now which is good for him, i have no problem with that, however I miss the old site. As for the nets moving to Newark, seems cool to me. I guess ill have to buy my 5th new uni in 5 years haha.

by Bruce Jones on Mar 5, 2010 4:10 PM EST reply actions

Sorry

that you’re not happy with the new site, Bruce.

The most important thing to us is that the readers get the same things that they got on the old site: All the up-to-the-minute news about the Nets and the most comprehensive aggregation of links that you’ll find on any sports blog.

It’s the same content, written by the same people. It’s just presented a little differently, with some added features that can be pretty cool.

From what I’ve seen, almost all of commenters from the old site are here too. Though if Isaac is using a different handle, I haven’t spotted him yet.

Hopefully, with time, you’ll get used to it and it will feel just as comfortable as the old site.

For all new posters to ND.

Nets Daily is like the church. They are composed of a “holy trinity”.

Nets Daily = Father (Don’t get him pissed)
Nets Income = Son (Does all the heavy lifting)
Isaac = “Friendly” Ghost (Haunts the ND website)

CHANGE CHANGE CHANGE

We need to make lots of changes. Moving to THE ROCK is a great first step. We may be there for like three years. We need a new owner, and if PROKY is on board within a month or so, that would be great. We need a new coach, and we should bring him on board BEFORE we draft anyone, or sign any free agents, so that’s mid-June? We need new starting forwards, hopefully they will both be free agents signed this summer. We need to say ADIOS, to like six or seven of our current players. That will happen at the end of the regular season. It is too bad that we can’t change this creep YORMARK for someone honest, someone with some class? NETS players delivering PIZZA? Come on!

JAY-Z THE KEY????

Having Jay-Z be front and center around the groundbreaking will be huge from a strategic standpoint. Not only will people in sports actually pay attention because Jay-Z is larger than life now. But the music world etc.. will also pay attention, a lot of the guys who we will be recruiting will want to be apart of this Newnesss to say. I don’t think you can put a number on that, that is part of the intangible effort that Proky and Jay-Z can bring, trust me on that.

Are the nets getting new jerseys next year?

Njnets. om says jerseys subject to change….hope that means nets miight be getting new jerseys…they need it

by Andy. on Mar 6, 2010 8:00 AM EST reply actions

They aren't getting new jerseys.

That was a tongue in cheek reference to all the upcoming free agents that are displayed on that page of the official website. By saying “jerseys subject to change”, they are referring to the possibility of them switching to the Nets via free agency this summer.

The Nets are sticking their heads on the line on that one. That could be construed as tampering. Usually, teams negotiate with free agents though the media so as to avoid tampering charges. By posting that on the official site, it could pose problems.

by Trueblood on Mar 6, 2010 1:24 PM EST up reply actions

Oh please

that’s not tampering. EVEEY NBA player’s uniform is subject to change.
