TNT Crew Not Optimistic About Nets and THE Record

For five excruciating minutes Thursday, the TNT crew of Barkley, Smith, Webber and Johnson, went through the Nets' remaining schedule, game-by-game. As Ernie Johnson read off each game, the three former players offered their opinions.  "Loss, Loss, Loss" was the litany.  At the end, only Ernie Johnson thought the Nets would escape the record for most losses in a season, predicting a 12-70 season.  The others thought eight games was the max.  All three said they thought the Nets would be hurt badly in free agency by their record.  Barkley felt no nostaglia for the soon to be retired IZOD.  "It was dump when I played and it's still a dump".

i saw this last night. it may hurt, but they’re not wrong. what have the nets done all year to make anyone believe they’re capable of more than 8 or 9 wins? nobody has a “grudge” against the nets so it’s not like they have a reason to be anything but objective. we’re just an awful team right now.

Predicting 10 wins… But barkleys right izod is a dump.

Where’s Isaac to say that Barkley’s wrong and IZOD is the best arena ever?!

Proud to hold season tickets to the only NBA team soon to be owned by a Russian oligarch.

haha! I was thinking the same thing when I was reading Barkley’s comments.

by BEB on Mar 5, 2010 4:24 PM EST up reply actions

So, we’re talking about 8 to 12 wins. From the potential 20 wins that we expected in pre-season. I don’t see the big deal here.

Love these guys but damn

“who’s going to want to come to a 6 win team”. Add james or Wade and it will be the biggest turnaround in NBA history. But they ripped us for a while. Truth hurts

But who cares about an arena? I know Izod is a dump but how much more can we pamper the athlete. Do they want computers built into their locker like in Dallas? Good lord

by SamsHops on Mar 5, 2010 1:41 PM EST reply actions

why would Wade or Lebron come here?

No one worth their salt is going to come here. The reason the realistic fans talk about Rudy Gay and David Lee is because those are young guys looking for their first big contract. The Vets who have already had their pay day want to get paid and win games.

I understand why people want LeBron, but I prefer to be able to root for my team without gagging.

Hey, LeBron, what are your thoughts on tonight’s brutal loss?

crickets

I made the same point too…. about how our record can deter FA’s who wants to win a championship from coming to our team.

I predict that we will tie the sixers record with 9 wins. I really hope they can prove me wrong.

In the end...

…like Thorn says. IT’S ABOUT THE MONEY!! The Nets will sign one major FA this offseason. The FAs know where the stability is. Despite the Nets decisions these past few years, it’s always been about 2010. The FAs aren’t stupid. They know Thorn’s track record…whether you think he’s good or not, he has respect around the league. To me it’ll come down to who the coach is. Whoever the coach is will determine if we end up with Rudy Gay or Dwayne Wade(if he decides his Miami era is finished).

Too many people call the team pathetic as if they thought they were going to be any good this year. Everyone expected a sad season, but yet it’s become a major story that it actually happened.

Again, to me, the people who matter, they know why this past season happened. Not too many teams survive with inexperienced players, a coach with no experience, injuries, and expiring contract players. All of these areas will be corrected this off-season. Our young guys are getting experience despite the poor play of the whole team. We’ll have a new coach and new owner. We’ll be signing at least one big FA, and also getting solid role players.

I dont care about free agents

honestly…i really dont….. i want us to build a core…. because in three years…. these SAME GUYS… are going to be like “well the Nets did the right thing by growing all-stars on their own”…..

the fact is we are a laughingstock…. who cares ?? do you really think after Porky comes that he would be associated with us in that way….NOPE…..PORKY DEMANDS RESPECT …

Ownership will change the culture of the Nets….. Ownership will bring in players who change the culture…..

dont despair Net fans….. we will be great …patience is a virtue

Just dropping by to show some love as I’m a Jersey fan too. Just being from Ohio I’m used to crappy teams or good teams that weren’t good enough. Sure the Nets are crappy right now, but next year is exciting and promising. With the potential of a #1-#2 draft pick and possibly two super star FA’s, how could you not?

As for the record, I think the win against the Celt’s hurt the Nets chances of more wins. The good teams will not want to suffer the ridicule of losing to a 6 win team. Whatever the final win total is, I’m sure next year they’ll have the biggest turnaround in the league. 500 ball gets you in the EC play-offs.

They all told the truth

Truth is we suck! there’s no doubt about that but Chris Webber could go kiss something!

by Mikee21 on Mar 5, 2010 2:58 PM EST reply actions

I would still take our team over half the other teams in the NBA, right now, even without the changes coming up with the draft and FA’s. Our team is very entertaining to watch, in a strange, macabre way. A little like S&M. LOL

by M I K E on Mar 5, 2010 3:05 PM EST up reply actions

No record here

The Nets are not going to finish with less than 9 wins. That I know will not happen. They only need 4 more wins here to dodge that bullet, and that is very possible even with one more month left in the regular season. Unless, they lose all their remaining games, they will not break that record.

by Tal Barzilai on Mar 5, 2010 3:24 PM EST reply actions

Correction

Barkley said that the Nets will win 9 (not 8) games and tie the record. Of course Barkley says so many things.

What they don’t tell us, is that its not the team as much as the Coach responsible for losing many of these games.
They have enough talent in Humphries and TWill, but Kiki refuses to use them properly. TWill is a Stud and should have been developed earlier this year. Hump should play the entire Q4 of every close game.

As long as Kiki insists on giving Yi more than 30-42 minutes every game and TWill 15 minutes or less, then they won’t with 10 games.

As far as free agency goes, if the Nets get Evan Turner, then with the addition of another FA and a REAL coach, the Nets would be a 45-53 win team (as long as Yi didn’t play more than 12 minutes).
DLee will be one of the top 1-2 free agents who actually switches teams, so all discussion should be with this in mind.

5 Dollar box - it rocks almost as much as this

-Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!

Enigh sensitivity

These guys told the absolute truth.

This team stinks.

This franchise is a joke.

The IZOD has been and always will be a DUMP.

I can’t be mad at someone who is telling the honest to god truth. I’ve said worse things about this team and I love the Nets to death

that’s supposed to be “enough” sensitivity.

It may be the truth, but I don’t feel they added any insight at all into why the Nets are as terrible as they are right now.

And Kenny Smith’s comments only indicates he’s a parrot who hasn’t seen more than two Nets games all season.

by TWilliAM on Mar 5, 2010 6:50 PM EST reply actions

In other words, they’re terrible analysts.

“HAHA. Nets are terrible.” Wow! They figured that out all by themselves? Amazing.

by TWilliAM on Mar 5, 2010 6:52 PM EST up reply actions

I'd like to say Kenny, Charles, and C-Webb are wrong BUT...

I don’t think they are.

Obviously in a 4 minute bit, they weren’t really paying attention to some of the Nets’ upcoming opponents and it was more comical for them to just dismiss every game as an automatic loss. When I watched the clip, I felt a little pissed off but when Ernie predicted 12 wins and I realised that would mean us having to win 6 of the next 22, I found myself agreeing with the other guys. In a season where we’re currently 6-54, how can we POSSIBLY expect to win 6 of our last 22?
