"Brooklyn Nets" or "New York Nets"? Mayor Won't Comment
The new renderings of Barclays Center have the words "Brooklyn Nets" emblazoned at either end of the court. Marty Markowitz, Brooklyn's Boro President, and Bruce Ratner, the outgoing owner, have called them the "Brooklyn Nets" But Sports Illustrated's Ian Thomsen, who broke the story of Mikhail Prokhorov's interest in the team, has twice written the team will likely be "rebranded" the "New York Nets."
Now comes Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Bloomberg was asked on his weekly radio show if there is a "definitive name that has been chosen? Will they be the Brooklyn Nets? Will they be the New York Nets? Or will they be the New Jersey Nets?"
The mayor of all New York wouldn't commit or comment. "I can guarantee you, it’s not the latter, okay? I’ll leave the other things to you."

If I were a betting man...
I’d bet it will be New York Nets. Unlike Ratner, Proky has no prior connection to Brooklyn, and I’d bet he will probably bring in some branding experts that will convince him that there’s more “brand equity” in New York over Brooklyn. I’d be disappointed, but I would get over it.
If they do change the name, I would rather that they do it sooner rather than later….in other words while they are in Newark. That way they could use the “New York” brand in their recruitment of LeBron, Bosh, Wade, etc (although they are not going to get any of those guys anyway).
The “New York” Giants and “New York” Jets both play in New Jersey…why not the “New York” Nets?
darn right
its about real estate…..and well Brooklyn real estate is like gold compared to Swamp real estate

Its Proky's decision in the end. He needs to be convinced of the special meaning that the name Brooklyn has.
Also, he needs to understand how fans get confused with New York Mets, Jets and Knicks sounding like Nets.
Best idea would be to do a test run of the name, by renaming the team for next year as the New Jersey/Brooklyn Nets.
I wonder if it is too late to change the name of team for next year?
The only reason not to use the Brooklyn name is if it might make it more difficult to get fans from Queens, Bronx, etc.
However, all of this pales compared to just putting a GOOD Team on display.
The quickest way to do that would be to get the Knicks best and most popular player – David Lee – signed up this summer.
Is there a deadline to change the teams name for the next year? New Jersey people rightly feel insulted that the “New Jersey” name has been removed. Now is the chance to make amends and name the team New Jersey/Brooklyn Nets for next 2 years. That would be the best “brand test”, rather than use some Madison Avenue firm. That would still give time to change to New York Nets if the “Brooklyn” doesn’t take throughout the Metro. area.
they’re not going to be called the Brooklyn Dodgers?

Re: Brooklyn Dodgers
LOL! Wow, Goldstein….that actually was really really funny! At least you’re able to keep your sense of humor through this whole thing….a good sense of humor and family are the most important things in life, and it appears that you have both.
I’m pro-AY, but I wish you and your family the best…
thanks
i am fortunate to have both of those. and though it was meant to funny, it would be a good name.

I gotta say
I like the sound of NEW YORK NETS. And a modern but classic uniform design, maybe with pinstripes, like the Yankees. white, gray and royal blue.
I love the sound of this – especially the sleek pinstriped unis.
I’d love to see us with a ‘Brooklyn Nets’ alternate uniform, but I think – overall – ‘New York Nets’ sounds much better. Marketing wise, it’d be more of a gold mine as well.

Brooklyn Nets?
Sounds like a minor league team.
NY Nets will be the official name. Maybe Brooklyn Nets their nickname.
Leave it to the Nets not to have a name yet.
Other possible names
Here are some other names they can have if they move to Brooklyn, and I forget about calling them the Realtors.
Brooklyn Land Grab
Brooklyn Brainwash
Brooklyn Zombies
Brooklyn Slaves
Brooklyn Subsidies
Brooklyn Tax Evaders
Uhhhh Tal
I know you probably didn’t mean it that way, but with a team that is probably 90% African American, “Brooklyn Slaves” would not go over very well…you want a do-over on that one?
Another one I forgot
How did I miss on this one, and the names I give is to show how much I am against the move to Brooklyn?
Brooklyn Bailouts
