Impressing the King

The Nets play the Cavs well. Even though they've lost three games to Cleveland and LeBron James, they've all been close with margins of 10, 8 and 7. Compare that to the Knicks debacle Monday when they lost by 31. Even before that, Yahoo's Marc Spears was saying "the Nets would have a better shot" at James because the Knicks "suck". Courtney Lee won't be able to impress LeBron. He's out at least til the weekend.

Lebron is staying in Cleveland, he is not going to leave the team knowing he couldnt win them a championship. That wouldnt make him a star player like Kobe and MJ have won a title for there teams.

Cmon Brook dominate this game and put everyone in their place.

by johnny on Mar 2, 2010 2:14 PM EST reply actions

“By the way, James filed paperwork to change his uniform No. from 23 to 6 next season. You only have to do that if you plan on staying with the same team. "

Can it not get more clear than that? Yet everyone still writes/talks about this sbuject.

by Antoine on Mar 2, 2010 2:15 PM EST reply actions

At least the writers are not talking about how obviously bad the Nets are. Money talks in free agency. That’s if we get the new owner.

by malorkayel on Mar 2, 2010 2:16 PM EST reply actions

Great. The heading above jinxes whatever chance the Nets had. I am giving my tickets to someone who will be excited to see Lebron. I can’t watch.

by Ispartan on Mar 2, 2010 2:21 PM EST reply actions

@ Antoine…

Changing his number with the Cavs doesn’t mean he won’t go elsewhere if another team makes him the right offer does it?

by JT on Mar 2, 2010 2:27 PM EST reply actions

@Antoine
This week was the deadline for changing uniform numbers next season. IF he decided to stay in Cleveland, he would not be able to wear #6 next year if he didnt file papers this week. Considering he has said he wants the NBA to retire #23, it would be bad form to wear it next year wherever he plays.

That said, I agree he is likely to stay…but I dont think this is some guarantee he’s staying.

fire Thorn and Kiki

by JohnY on Mar 2, 2010 2:47 PM EST reply actions

Shaquille O’Neal never won a title for Orlando but I would call him a star player, Randy.

Lebron is not going to make his decision, Danny Ferry is. Looking at that team they continue to add old players, and old players break down (see Shaq). The bottom line is championship contention AND for how long?

by kg on Mar 2, 2010 3:00 PM EST reply actions

that was a great vid. what i have been saying this whole season.

he comes to the nets before he goes to the knicks for many reasons. one being a better team in NJ.

by superb on Mar 2, 2010 3:01 PM EST reply actions

Who would go from Jaimeson as your PF to Yi? From Varejao to Boone or Hump? From Brown to Kiki? From Best to worst. Enough. The dude is staying in Cleveland. Our sights are on Lee and Gay and Wall

by geo on Mar 2, 2010 3:01 PM EST reply actions

Call me crazy but I think that if LeBron wins a championship in Cleveland this year, then he won’t re-sign with them. He has spent 7 years of his career in his homestate giving them everything and “sacrificing” his own personal wealth to bring them a championship. Sure there’s the lure of a repeat but he wants the money. He wants to be the MJ of the 21st century commercially and even wealthier. If he doesn’t win one, well then it’s really up in the air. It’s not like Cleveland’s FO isn’t putting in the guys to help him.

geo,

Why you are even posting here. Do you know what Nets would look next year???? If you think Kiki is coaching next year then you must be a six year old just typing here for the sake of typing……..

by Tony on Mar 2, 2010 3:16 PM EST reply actions

Ray allen never won a ring for the sonics, KG never won a ring for the wolves. players don’t necessarily need to stay where they are famous for in order to be considered a star.
And next year the team will look different trust me.

by ZHAS on Mar 2, 2010 3:46 PM EST reply actions

Does anyone realize Lebron loves the attention? He loves the constant chatter about what he’s doing. Money talks come summer. If he thinks endorsement dollars are higher elsewhere he will consider that. And if you are playing to win multiple championships u have to take into account young players on roster. Cleveland 3 years from now not nearly as promising as nj in 3 years. Long term that matters. Same with knicks lack of picks…..you have to realize depth and young blood not in the cards if you sign with the knicks. Just saying

by ryan243 on Mar 2, 2010 3:50 PM EST reply actions

Lebron won’t stay in Cleveland they cant afford him Cavs have Mediocre players after this season Shaq, Illguskas,Powe J.Williams, Telfair and just add Lebron gone after this season.
Key players for Cavs:

Williams/West/Gibson
Parker/Moon/Green
No Small Forward
Jamison/Varejo/Hickson
No Center

VS.Nets

Harris/Dooling
Lee/CDR/Williams
3 1st rnd Picks+$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Humpries/Boone
Lopez/Yi

by jj on Mar 2, 2010 3:53 PM EST reply actions

@ ryan243 – I agree – to a point. You do realize that three years from NOW, TODAY, Devin Harris will be 30 while Courtney Lee will not be far behind?

@ Net Income

What is the advantage of signing a long term contract now than waiting 1-6 years from now. (LBJ either picking up his option or I know that the CBA or something like that needs to be refined. Would that have an effect on Lebron or any FA for that matter. Can you shed some light on that please?

I can’t believe were still talking about lebron possibly coming here. We need to start talking about free agents that are more realistic. Lebron is not coming here I’m sorry if I offended anyone but it’s the truth

by 1milord on Mar 2, 2010 3:58 PM EST reply actions

@Tony, only a six year old would allow Kiki to continue coaching this team the remainder of the season, thereby damaging young player development, risking the Nets go down as worst team in history.

Kiki may be coaching, but ROD THORN is the one who put him (and the team, and the organization) in this position. Moreover, after witnessing Kiki’s inability, ROD THORN continues to keep Kiki as coach.

Now, who has the mind of a six year old? The Nets President, Rod Thorn.

by JohnY on Mar 2, 2010 3:59 PM EST reply actions

So is the New York market not such a big deal financially for a guy like LeBron (we have the internet now—the city you play in doesn’t matter), or is that guy just downplaying it? The internet comment seems stupid to me.

@ ryan234

Yes, I think Lebron resigns for his 17 mil so we can all go through this drama again next year!

by geo on Mar 2, 2010 4:24 PM EST reply actions

In response to some of you guys, i’m not saying Bron comes to jersey but here are some thoughts

Is Yi guaranteed a spot next year in the starting line-up? The Nets organization is going to look horrible if they commit another year to Yi. Especially considering they need a better fit next to Lopez. Yi’s weaknesses are some of the Nets’ biggest needs. And I thought your supposed to earn your minutes? Someone tell me how Yi has earned his minutes.

Kiki isn’t going to be the coach next year, why i’m stating this…I don’t know. But I try not to hate on Kiki too much, he didn’t want this job, and he inherited a team that was 0-18 I believe. I also didn’t expect much from a guy who’s never coached before. To expect a lot with this group is far fetched. However, If we end up with John Wall or Evan Turner all you people will be kissing Kiki like he’s Brando in the godfather.

New Jersey has a ready-made young center who would be getting much more acclaim if he wasn’t playing home games at the Meadowlands, plus a point guard in Devin Harris who’s a championship piece as long as he’s not the first or second option. (Don’t want to hear about last year’s numbers, save it)

Courtney Lee isn’t chop liver either. This would be proven consistently if we get an elite player.

by Sami on Mar 2, 2010 4:25 PM EST reply actions

I just hope free agents have their eyes wide open

by Sami on Mar 2, 2010 4:26 PM EST reply actions

clee better change his number because lbj is goin 2 b wearin that 6 nxt year

by tu vieja on Mar 2, 2010 4:31 PM EST reply actions

This team only has I believe six players signed through next year, so to look at this team now and say why would so and so come here, makes no sense because next year will be a new season, new coach, new arena, new players, new owner. This year will not have as much impact as you think players around the league know how good our core is.

by Atronic on Mar 2, 2010 4:43 PM EST reply actions

@ tu vieja – Yes, but with the Cavs.

by diehardNFFLbarnone on Mar 2, 2010 4:43 PM EST reply actions

@ diehardNFFLbarnone
I actually think Lebron is changing his number because the number 23 is retired by both the Nets and Knicks(Possible destinations) and not because he want’s to honor or respect M. Jordan. He is number 23 for Cavs why change it, it is either that or he want’s to copy what Kobe did to sell more merchandise/Thinks he’s to good and retiring that number for himself(Kobe retired his#8 at season ends of 81 points).

*Trust me if he really wanted to honor the greats that wore #23 why pick it in the first place right out of High school?

by jj on Mar 2, 2010 5:09 PM EST reply actions

Courtney Lee is going to have to give up his number for Lebron anyway

by Frank S on Mar 2, 2010 5:10 PM EST reply actions

i’m with everyone on LBJ. he would be a fool not to come here, but we all need to prepare for the worst. i’m not getting my hopes up. at least we arent like the knicks who have mortgaged their entire future on lebron coming. the nets are still a good team and are better than the 6 wins

nets for life

by Anthony Cole on Mar 2, 2010 5:13 PM EST reply actions

LeBron will stay in Cleveland. While Ferry has brought in some older players, the Cavs also have a youthful core: LeBron – 25; Varajao – 27, Leon Powe – 25, JJ Hickson – 21; Booby Gibson – 24, Mo Williams – 27; Telfair – 25, Darnell Jackson – 24; Jamario Moon – 29; Danny Green – 22.

The Cavs will be looking for a center to replace Shaq and/or Z, but they should be good for another season, especially given the wealth of young bigs Cleveland has stockpiled.

It is conceivable, altho unlikely, that if LeBron wins the championship this year, he could challenge Bill Russell for the most rings in a career. Big Bill won 11 in 13 years.

by bobdevo on Mar 2, 2010 5:18 PM EST reply actions

I’m tired of hearing this nonsense every time the Cavs and Nets play

why would Lebron be impressed by one of the worst team’s in NBA history? This is just stupid and anyone who thinks that he is “impressed” by the laughing stock of the league is delusional.

NETS WIN LBJ sweepstakes! :)

by jirohkanzaki on Mar 2, 2010 6:53 PM EST reply actions

Many of you are partially right about LeBron.

Here are the facts:
1. He DOES want to win a championship before leaving Cleveland. He Does expect to win one this year, no doubt.
2. Win or lose this year, there is NO team that he could go to next year that is a “sure thing”.
3. The fact that he changed his number already is one small indication he is thinking about staying.
4. LeBron isn’t motivated by a big contract – he wants Championships and “a Brand name for himself”.
5. LeBron needs to decide by the end of June whether he goes the free agent route – which the media doesn’t want to remind us about.

The most likely answer is that he accepts the 17.2 million player option, and gives it another try with Jamison and company. Then he will have a better idea which team is best. Nets should be at top of list.

Elementary. (and the media are playing the public for fools, because they should know better too).

by jerry25 on Mar 2, 2010 7:33 PM EST reply actions

@ jirohkanzaki – I would switch the coaching values around (Cavs 7; Nets 3) because Kiki is likely to still be here next season.

by diehardNFFLbarnone on Mar 2, 2010 7:41 PM EST reply actions

@diehardNFFLbarnone
i can do that but even so mike brown won’t have much of a lead over kiki… :)

by jirohkanzaki on Mar 2, 2010 7:48 PM EST reply actions

It’s the same thing the same convo every time we play the Cavs. Lebron is not leaving Cleveland until he wins them a championship. And if he does win them a championship why would he just leave after that he would look bad simply put Lebron is not signing nowhere else but Cleveland.

by Mikee21 on Mar 2, 2010 7:50 PM EST reply actions

More evidence:

LeBron left off Yi’s name as asset, when he last commented about Nets. Therefore he wouldn’t come if there was still a gaping whole at the PF position.

LeBron doesn’t consider Amare to be the answer to his long term needs, or else Cleveland would have signed him if they thought it would keep LeBron long term.

If Amare isn’t a good enough 2nd player, that leaves DWade and possibly Bosh. Knicks could never get DWade to leave Miami to play “under” LeBron. Knicks signing LeBron and Bosh would use up their entire cap space. The rest of the team would be the remaining 4 players plus scrubs and possibly McGrady, if he wanted to play for Vets minimum.
No way LeBron would want to be on That team.

by jerry25 on Mar 2, 2010 8:44 PM EST reply actions

anyone with common sense would leave Yi’s name off of a list of assets. The only one who doesn’t realize that Yi is a joke is Kiki
