Is Prokhorov Looking for a Bigger Olympic Role?

Mikhail Prokhorov appears ready to take on a larger Olympic role as Russia prepares for the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi. While traveling with Russia's president in France, Prokhorov released a statement calling on Russia to overhaul its sports programs, citing poor management, training and equipment. Prokhorov's biathlon team gives his credibility. Biathletes won two of Russia's three gold medals in Vancouver.

First I want him to show he wants to be a NBA owner by telling Stern to go ahead with the approval ASAP. Ground Breaking is next week and there is no longer anything that can stop Barclays.

Proky has a LiveJournal? I always associated those with emo college students who thought Facebook was too trendy.

It really sounds like he will be a great owner. The Brooklyn Nets will have all the peices in place to be a winner. Honestly he is stepping into a great situation. It already been torn down, he just needs to build it up. Every aspect of the team will get better, from scouting to training, to traveling, management…everything.

A couple of points…

—Prokhorov’s father was a member of the old Soviet Sports Commission, so he knows the history of sports in Russia.

—The Biathlon benefitted not just from a flood of Prokhorov money. He took his old GM at CSKA Moscow and installed him as executive director of the Biathlon Union because he wanted someone with both sports experience and personal loyalty.

—The timing of this is interesting. he issued this statement yesterday at the same time President Dmitry Medvedev called for changes in the Olympic system and the resignation of certain sports executives. They were traveling together to France. I doubt this is coincidental…and it suggests Olympic. He now has had success in both basketball and biathlon. They have also been reports he is politically ambitious.

—Expect his two top aides, Dmitry Razumov and Christophe Charlier, to play a big role with the Nets. He delegates and these two guys were the ones who did the Newark deal, visiting the arena, and spoke with Thorn in Dallas before flying off to Vancouver for the meeting with the boss.

—Most importantly, he shows once again that even though he delegates authority, he remains fully involved. And if things go badly, he is not afraid to call for change.

I was hoping Proky would be a crazy passionate “owner/fan” type, like Cuban. It seems he is more a traditional type owner who will hire others to run the team and he will overseer from up above.

As long as he signs the checks, great…

If Proky has political aspirations on top of all his other dealings, I hope he finds a little time for the Nets.

Maybe Thorn continues on in charge, but this time with an open checkbook.

Imagine being told money is no obstacle. Do and spend what you must. Dream job but you better get good results…

I’m telling you it’s not just Prokhorov. it’s the other guys who has been delegating authority to. The 30-somethings.

So who does Prokhorov tell “don’t come back to Russia without making the playoffs”? The 30-somethings?

Maybe this means that Proky doesn’t want a coach who he can’t fire without repercussions – eg. Legend Coach K.

I never believed the Coach K. stories anyway. As Dave D. wrote, there are people with different motives putting out this stuff.

And has anyone wondered why a Poker Player like Rod Thorn would have a list of desirable coaches that would get leaked to the media?

Me thinks the Coach that Thorn really wants, hasn’t been mentioned much. That way he could be hired at a lower price/shorter deal and fired if it doesn’t work out.

Thorn would be the kind of owner that Proky should like. After getting on Proky’s good side, then he could convince him to pay the big bill.

Avery Johnson could be obtain at a fair price and fired if he failed.
