Around SBN: Identifying The 19th-Best Team In Baseball

Mark Jackson Hoping for the Call

Mark Jackson has never coached at any level, not even as an assistant.  But he's hired an agent and hopes to get on someone's short list. Jackson talked to team executives both last year (Knicks and Timberwolves) and in 2008 (Suns), but didn't have agent.  Ken Berger of CBS Sports says the two teams that are most "sensible" landing spots for the 44 year old Jackson are the Clippers, near where he lives, and the Nets, near where he grew up.  Berger says the Clippers offer a ready-made situation while the Nets are more "longer term". The Pacers, where Jackson had productive years, might also be looking for a coach this summer.  Jackson did commentary for Nets games on YES for three years, ending in 2008.  He teamed with both Marv Albert and Ian Eagle.

There's no indication the Nets, who reportedly want a big name, are interested in Jackson.

Absolutely not. Maybe as an assistant. If we make him head coach, thats suicide

by J-Kay on Mar 18, 2010 3:32 PM EDT reply actions

Well

A better idea is not cheer for St. John’s.
Coach Jackson is the right choice for the school program.

I believe he has a son playing for a High School State Championship in California.
The guy is a natural leader and would be able to recruit with pride for St. John’s along with making the program a player in the Big East.

Not going to happen

i prefer an established, defensive minded coach like Jeff Van Gundy.

I want either the Czar or Coach Cal. MJax doesn’t interest me.

by Andres B on Mar 18, 2010 3:54 PM EDT reply actions

Czar would be nice

and I bet Prokhorov wouldn’t mind hiring a guy with the nickname Czar

by pegs on Mar 18, 2010 7:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Definitely Asst

I wouldn’t mind seeing Mark Jackson coach under Van Gundy.

by Ely Younger on Mar 18, 2010 3:54 PM EDT reply actions

agreed

exactly what I thought…Van Gandy is the Man!

NO! you can be an assistant though

by jumpman on Mar 18, 2010 4:05 PM EDT reply actions

Yup

I’ve been saying he should be a coach. Not sure he’s the “splash” the Russian wants to make though…

by eLonepb on Mar 18, 2010 4:05 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, maybe he can work out just as well the high-scoring former player that we have coaching the team right now.

Proud to hold season tickets to the only NBA team soon to be owned by a Russian oligarch.

NO EX-KNICKS IN ANY WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM! If we can’t get Mike Brown, I want a well-known EURO COACH!

Mike Brown isn’t the coach of that Cavs team. LeBron is.

Pretty much

He’s like the Jim Caldwell of the NBA.

Gross… Mike Brown? He is a horrible coach!

I'd take Fratello over MJ

Fratello just seems like the perfect coach personality. very agreeable and humble but not a pushover and knows his stuff and is great at communicating it.

by jrtallent on Mar 18, 2010 4:50 PM EDT reply actions

No but...

….i would love M Jack to be an assistant. When commentating you can hear from him exactly what some players need to hear that has nothing to do with coaching but as as man and player. He would question the players pride and that’s where I think he can be a good assistant, until he attains experience as a coach. “you’re better than that!” , “you gotta go back at him when he comes at ya” , “foul them hard and let them know this is my house”. Yeah i’ll take Mjack as an assitant

Go Nets!

by BrooNets on Mar 18, 2010 4:51 PM EDT reply actions

This team definitely needs someone with head coaching experience.

Avery is the man

Our guys is Avery Johnson. Let’s get him before NO gets him.

by NDTony on Mar 18, 2010 5:10 PM EDT reply actions

INDEED

I could see Jackson being an Assistant to JVG, but not to Avery.

If you want Avery Johnson, the person holding up the transfer of power up has just posted on the previous Blog.
Get in on the action and let Daniel Goldstein know how much you appreciate what he is trying to do.

Honestly don’t see the attraction for any team wanting to hire Mark Jackson…Nets, Clips, Pacers, etc. I see no reason to hire him as a head coach. Swallow your pride, be an assistant coach in the NBA or college and get coaching experience. Coaching is much different than announcing.

I am a big fan of hiring Mike Fratello. The guy is probably the best/most knowledgeable announcer in the league and was a very good coach. Look at his past teams – he got a lot out of teams lacking true stars. And he understands defense and has a way of nicely questioning silly plays he sees young Nets making.

by Ryan243 on Mar 18, 2010 5:46 PM EDT reply actions

Haha Fratello speaks for all frustrated Nets fans. His sarcastic personality is right up my ally when the Nets have been stinking it up.

and he's a jersey guy

he attended hackensack high school where i went to

I don't want Jax

As many posters have mentioned already, no Jax. I’ll take him as an assistant, though.
As for Fratello, I don’t think he is the coach the Nets need.

And so said the old man!

I think we need a coach who isn't used to coaching veterans

if Johnson butted heads with Harris how do you think he’d work with an entire team of kids who are like years behind where Harris was as a basketball player at that point. No veteran head coach would be able to work with this team, we need someone who’s used to actually having to teach basketball before he goes into the X’s and O’s.

i dont want to have one of our coaches being a working piece. We need an expierenced NBA coach and JVG fills bill pefectly

@ juantegoma – Re: The Harris/Jefferson comparison you made back in December: If as you claim, Jefferson is a “complete fraud”, then how did the Bucks go from 26 wins in 2007-2008 to 34 wins in 2008-2009? If you say that is all on the coach, you have just proved the point I have been trying to make since the second meeting with the Lakers about Mike Brown to great resistance.

Your Better then that!

I would love to see either Mark Jackson or Avery Johnson. Even over the Czar.

Jackson in particular, because whoever we had at PG, he would instantly make them twice as good. He is also tough, and says it like it is, and we need that for sure.

I like Avery because he is def an earful, and again these punks need a little fire. The Kiki Yoga master of silence and understanding does not work.

Stop/Think

Can you imagine being a top recruit PG in the country and having Coach M.Jackson walk into your parents living room saying that he would like you to come to St John’s.
Wow!
A Coach whom was one the best all time point guards in college and the NBA learn from.
St.John’s do the right thing and wake up and smell the coffee.
Hire ASAP Coach Mark Jackson for the program he was part of along with being one of the best ever.
Just ask the clown name Ewing and what he did for his career.
He is not a player whom just played at St. John’s.
he was a star and would be a leader of pride for the school.
Then move all your home games to the new Brooklyn Barclay Center when ready for a better recruiting scenario and interest.
St. John’s!/Coach M.Jackson & Brooklyn Barclay Center
A Win! Win!
