Can The Nets Get to 10 Wins Before Time Runs Out?

It took the Nets 19 games to get win No. 1, 11 games to get No. 3, 12 to get No. 4 and then another nine to get No. 5. They've won three of their last 14 and seem to be playing better of late, but they're still three wins short of their goal. The schedule lightens up a bit and they do get to play the Bobcats one more time, but nothing is guaranteed with this team.

If the Nets are going to get to their own magic number, Brook Lopez will have to avoid cheap fouls.  The Nets' center has spent a lot of time on the bench this month in early foul trouble.

Easy way to answer that:
How soon does Yi come back.

by Jron on Mar 15, 2010 12:04 AM EDT reply actions

I assume you mean if YI doesn't return, Nets have a chance?

Problem is that Kiki still refuses to give Hiump, Yi’s minutes. Instead he is playing Hassell and Boone at PF.
Hump played a key roll in the last 4 victories. Wouldn’t you think Kiki could make the connection?

Hump should be given 35 min if he isn’t in foul trouble.
TWill should get 35 min too.

by jerry25 on Mar 15, 2010 4:12 AM EDT up reply actions

Humphries played 15 minutes in the last win...

21 minutes in the win before that, and 23 minutes in the one before that. He did have a hot game against the Clippers, playing 30 minutes.

But all of those wins also coincided with strong offensive games from Lee and Harris. Asides from the Clippers game, I don’t see how Hump gets the credit.

by PhilNYC on Mar 15, 2010 10:32 AM EDT up reply actions

Simple: They would all have be losses if it was Yi getting those minutes in crunch time.

And it would be easy to deduce that there would have been more wins in other close games if he had been given more minutes.

The far majority of Nets fans believe he more valuable that Yi and always will be. Yet he gets 1/2 the minutes. His minutes don’t even increase when Yi is injury.

Very suspicious.

by jerry25 on Mar 15, 2010 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions

The far majority of Nets fans aren’t NBA analysts. More like guys who change tone from game to game depending on who has a bad game. If a player has a good game, he’s alright. Bad game? Trade him, he sucks. Except for Yi, who is bad no matter what he does, even if he’s not in the game. CDR is an exception too, he’s good no matter what he does, even if he’s not in the game. Sean Williams is an exception too, even if he’s in China now. Brook can be descibed as anything from being the franchise player one game to soft and slow in another game. Lee can be called a bum who can’t shoot one game and a vital piece in another. etc etc

Every single observation is the result of pre-conceived notions and beliefs, and no actual hard tangible facts and evidence. Excuse everyone on the planet if the fans don’t have a great track record for reliability.

Some people advocate that Boone should be playing more, he would provide a defensive presence, he’s our best defensive big man. Some people say Boone sucks, it’s humphries. newsflash: They both have as-lost-as-sheep moments on the defensive end. But no matter how many minutes those two play, there will never be a concensus that they suck no matter what like there is with Yi. People go to the “if Yi were in, they’d all be blowout early on”. What about all the games since February that haven’t been blowouts that Yi was in? People say Yi is a bad defender; true, but defense is a 5 man game. If our perimeter guys can stay in front their guys, the big men don’t have to help out. If they don’t have to help out, the ball doesn’t get dumped in to the big men. If the ball doesn’t go in the other perimeter guys don’t have to sag low to double. If they don’t have to double they don’t have to scramble to open perimeter shots. And so on. The breakdown of one is the breakdown of all, so to blame one player for the defensive failing of the whole team is stupid

by muwu on Mar 15, 2010 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Why fans are inconsistent?

Answer = Fans are inconsistent because many players, especially young players, are inconsistent. They will have a great game followed by a bad game.

Happens in all sports not just basketball.

That is why very good or great players are great, because they are consistent.

by M I K E on Mar 15, 2010 1:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Which is why we shouldn’t be judging them on a game to game basis. We need to be looking at bigger sample sizes to get an accurate picture of what’s going on, not judging a player based on one game in his life. Every single player in the NBA has a bad game, great player or bad player, young or old.

by muwu on Mar 15, 2010 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions

"But momma, thats where the fun is"..

Fans love sports because every game has a beginning, middle and most importantly, and end.

You can hate a player one day and love him the next.

I usually like to look at players and teams long term, but many fans seem to enjoy living and dying with every play and every game.

To each his own…

by M I K E on Mar 15, 2010 2:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Minority

I guess I am in the minority, I thought Brook sucked from the beginning. Even when he has “good games” its because he has an incredibly soft shot and a nack for hitting off balanced ill advised shots.

The last 2 games he has started off(first shot of game) with fade away from 18 feet MJ would call a long distance fade.

We will not be good until he gets a good big man coach, and a head coach that will get in his face. On that note, I think he can be good some day, but not the way we have it.

Tin foil hat

Nets have wins with Yi playing, nets had 0 wins without Yi playing. Still, I like Hump and his role on the team. I don’t like turning this to a Yi vs Hump, similar to that ridiculous Yi vs Anderson thing we had last year. Or that Yi vs RJ…

Some fans are idiots, X player had a great game, if we had played him more minutes we would have won Y more games. X player had a terrible game, if we had played him less minutes we have won Y more games.

Duh! You can’t rewrite history every other day.

3 seem possible...

3-17 at Philly
4-4 at Wash.
4-12 vs. Charlotte (but already beat twice)

Not really even confident they’d win these 3.
And Charlotte would be the last home game of the season, and last at Izod. If trying to avoid record still, would that bring out a big crowd?

But the Celtics win was a surprise, so maybe they’ll pull one or two off. Maybe Miami will rest everybody for the playoffs and we’d win there at the end of the season. Or not entirely impossible to win at Bucks on 4-7 or at Indy 4-10 or hosting Detroit 3-36. These are pla-out-the-schedule games against other non-playoff teams who may not care very much while the Nets would be playing hard to avoid the record.

Were not breaking this record.

by Mikee21 on Mar 15, 2010 2:13 AM EDT reply actions

Alexander Johnson's line today: 25 points, 18 rebounds, 3 blocks.

When Rafer Alston couldn’t play, Miami immediately called somone up from D-League. The replacement might even be better than Rafer.

Yi gets hurt, and the Nets don’t even try out one player.

I’ve been a Nets fan for a long, long time, but I just can’t get over how cheap they are.

These Nets (and Nets management) deserve the worst record in history.

San Antonio just picked up a D-Leaguer.

The $ should be available. When Del Harris quit, 1/2 of his rumored $200,000 salary should be unspent.

Could it be that even if Thorn brought up a D Leaguer for PF, Kiki wouldn’t play him – so as not to make Yi look bad?

by jerry25 on Mar 15, 2010 4:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Why

Why should they try out D leagues? We already have Yi’s back ups. We have 2 of them at that!

by Tim823 on Mar 15, 2010 6:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Bobcats game'll be a loss

They’ll likely still be in the race for one of the last playoff spots, so that game could very well matter to them. Plus they know that they’ve lost to us twice, so that’s even more motivation for them.

we have a couple of winnable games coming up, we should make it. Philadelphia, Sacramento, Detroit, Washington, and Indiana are all winnable games

I doubt they get to 10 wins. It takes a miracle to get this team to finish games strong

Record

I would not be surprised either way. Really. I could see them winning 3 at most unless teams lie down like dogs (or like the Nets). I could also see them losing 15 of the next 16. They seem to win about once every 10 games. I agree that without some presence inside, they will not win. I also agree that playing Yi big minutes just makes us that much worse defensively – and what does he really give offensively? Kiki does not seem to be coaching to win games. He does not bring intensity. But if Lee gets hot and Hayes stays hot, we can win some games.

For next year, Lopez, who is a weak presence on the defensive side, needs a stud next to him. He also needs someone in practice who will toughen him up and teach him how to protect the middle. With all the players traded (VC, RJ, etc) you think we could have brought in a moose. What was Rod (who should be fired) thinking? Yi is so far from what we need or he is the opposite of what we need at that position. Let’s just hope the Yi experiment (marketing and basketball) is over.

by oman8 on Mar 15, 2010 10:57 AM EDT reply actions

If we draft 3rd or 4th…the Yi experiment will be over…

But i think the Nets get that Yi is not the answer at PF…I would accept yi off the bench because his shooting is valuable.

by Andy. on Mar 15, 2010 11:03 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

Yi won’t be our starting PF next season, but he could be useful as a stretch 4 off the bench. He’s hitting .410+ of hist 3s this year.

by Andres B on Mar 15, 2010 12:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Also agreed

he’s a great bench rotational piece, just not a starter.

by Gina on Mar 15, 2010 2:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe

I haven’t completely given up on the kid yet, but he definitely doesn’t deserve to start. I’m also not sure if he is a reliable stretch 4 b/c his 41% from three point range is based on 12 for 29 this season – that’s less than 1 3-pt attempt per game – that isn’t gonna stretch any defenses. He shot 34% from 3-pt range last year when he was taking more attempts. He needs to get benched. The team needs to force him to fight for his minutes. Frankly, I don’t think the kid has enough heart to fight his way into serious rotation minutes if he has to earn them with his play. I hope he proves me wrong someday.

The Nets will win when...

B Lo doesn’t disappear in the second half.
the whole team plays as a team.
they know how to finish.
there are efforts from both ends.
no one is taking 10-15 wild shots.
backups like Boone and Hump are not viewed as saviors.

If the Nets do manage to finish the season with at least 10 wins, then everyone who doubted me has to each give me a hundred dollars and take back some of the claims they made on DDDB.

MIKE, I will leave that to you if I am wrong.

JohnFromLongisland, I have seen a lot of false claims on them that I have repeatedly debunked yet some still ride them, so if the Nets do dodge that bullet, it should be stopped or at least have those making the claims back them up with actual facts rather than making some talking point about it.

Any wonder why we are not winning....

Any team that starts Boone and Hassel at PF + SF are not going to win many games.

I guess we don’t have to many alternatives right now.

We have to somehow improve at these two positions.

Draft, trade, free agency? We have to get better at PF + SF.

by M I K E on Mar 15, 2010 12:21 PM EDT reply actions

Its called Hump and TWill for now.

Until recently TWill wasn’t even gettting much PT.
It was predictable that he would play well if given a chance.
Unfortunately, Kiki waited too long, yet his main job this year was to develop the worthwhile young players so that it would help the Nets by the end of the year.

Hump (may be younger than Yi) isn’t even getting more minutes than before the Yi injury, yet he hasn’t been in foul trouble.
Everyone assumed that when Yi was injured that Hump would get most of his minutes.
Think again. This is Kiki. What is he up to?

by jerry25 on Mar 15, 2010 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe they want to go slow with T-Will and maybe they don’t want Hump playing great an opting out of his contract.

Kiki seems to be coaching by the book. Wins don’t seem that important to him, developing a system is.

Or maybe they don’t see Hump and T-Will as future starters on this team and don’t want them to start because of this.

by M I K E on Mar 15, 2010 1:24 PM EDT up reply actions

So then Hump is TOO GOOD that he might Opt Out if he got a chance to play more?

That could be, but if the rest of the NBA is as astute as these bloggers below indicate, they would know that he’s not worth more than $3.2 million in the open market – who is right?

How is Kiki “coaching by the book” mean not caring about winning, when clearly management wants 3 more wins.

Neither Hump nor TWill need to be starters to get 35 min PT. I agree they shouldn’t be starters, because I don’t want them to get into foul trouble early. I doubt they care about starting.

Hump clearly cares about playing more and finishing games and Winning. Clearly Hump and most Nets fans feel that he is better then Yi and he HAS proven it by his per minute overall contributions, including in the 4 wins since he joined the Nets.
However, now that Yi is out, it has become ridiculous that he doesn’t get more PT.

Kiki must be fired. I don’t want him judging College talent if he doesn’t think that Hump is better than Yi or Boone, especially when Yi is injured.

Fire Kiki!
Hollah!

by jerry25 on Mar 15, 2010 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions

TWill wasn’t getting PT early on for a reason. Did you see his early games? I remember a game way back in November or December where in I actually couldn’t believe he would try a shot when he had been missing all night. I think that was in one of our wins when he shot like 0/12 or something.

Since then he’s reigned in his shots and has driven to the rim more. And he’s rebounded more and dished more assists now. It’s only fair that he’s getting a lot of PT now after he’s adjusted his game.

Hump isn’t as good as some people think. He’s a black hole. Once he touches the ball it’s not touching anyone else. He’s not consistent defender. He’s in love with mid range jumpers.

by muwu on Mar 15, 2010 1:36 PM EDT up reply actions

In defense of Hump and T-Will and CDR etc.

Young players in this league know that offense numbers get them the big bucks.

No wonder they try to score as much as they can.

There are plenty of players making big bucks because of their offense game.

Defense is talked about endlessly but if you can score you get the most bucks.

by M I K E on Mar 15, 2010 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions

exactly and if you're Hump or CDR

you’re not sure you have any future with this team, considering lack of playing time despite the awful options in front of them, so you’re clearly going to be more concerned with increasing your value on the open market than your value to the nets.

This season is a disgrace nut sometimes...

Nets ownership and management left this team high and dry.

It’s a disgrace what they have done and not done, especially Thorn, but sometimes these things turn out to blessings down the road.

I have lost a lot respect for Thorn and I never had to much to begin when it comes to Ratner.

The players and fans got screwed this year, big time.

Meh I can't really blame anyone but Ratner

There’s not much Thorn and the rest can do when they have no ownership, funds, and huge portions of the basketball staff have been cut. I think as team presidents and gm Thorn and Kiki did about the best job you could expect given the circumstances, if you ignore the horrible experiment that is Kiki as coach.

Maybe your right, but...

It seemed that Nets management acted like it’s was “everyman for himself” time, screw the women and children.

Thorn was head of management and should of done more in keeping everybody at their post. It seemed Thorn was also in panic mode until he met with Proky’s henchmen.

And I wouldn't be shocked if part of the reason Kiki was given the HC job

was because they didn’t have the funds to hire an actual coach.

by Gina on Mar 15, 2010 5:07 PM EDT up reply actions

That WAS the reason. Its not a secret. However, they had to come up with $200,000 to hire Del Harris.

We heard that Kiki was denied any increase in salary for doubling as HC. He was supposed to retain GM position – part time, but that apparently was gradually taken away from him by Thorn as Tom Barrise assumed some of Kiki’s duties.

Rod certainly was uncertain about his future at that time.

by jerry25 on Mar 15, 2010 5:20 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't know anything about Barrise

but I want no part of Thorn being gm again, I really think Kiki as a gm has gotten a bad rap. I think considering the circumstances he did a pretty good job.
