Cal Wants to Coach in Brooklyn for Kentucky Wildcats

The Nets announced on Friday that they've reached a marketing and promotion deal with IMG College to bring NCAA basketball to Barclays Center starting in 2012-13.  In the press release announcing the deal, Kentucky coach John Calipari said he wants to coach the first college game in Brooklyn. "Basketball is really the heart of Brooklyn, and there is no place that has developed more all-time great players than the borough. There's no question about it. We want to play there first," said Calipari. Brett Yormark sat behind the Wildcats bench last weekend watching Cal coach...and John Wall play. Brooklyn Sports and Entertainment, which will run the arena, hopes to sell 100 suites at  Barclays by offering all-event deals.

Kentucky as well as 22 other college teams are represented by IMG. In addition to NCAA basketball, IMG will book college hockey, major indooor tennis events, high school sports and even fashion shows.

No Way!

Coach Cal belongs in college and should never get a job in the NBA.
It is better for him along with the NBA.

He has to wait

til the NCAA starts its investigation of Kentucky, then move on.

Brooklyn/Basketball

Brooklyn….Yes is synonymous with Basketball.
St. John’s should transfer all their home games to the Barclay Center along with making Mark Jackson & Chris Mullen coaches/recruiters of St. John’s.
Both from the school along with both being from Broooklyn.

Not only having the Nets flourishing this could become the hotbed for college basketball.
Future NCAA’s Tourney/Olympics etc.

tough choice for the Johnnies

of course, it would be great for exposure and recruiting, but what’s better for the students: games on campus or games a half hour away by train?

I think this deal signals a lack of interest on the Nets part. They are trying to book a lot of college games, with big programs. Could they handle 15 Johnnies games, a number of big college games and 40+ Nets games?

by Net Income on Mar 13, 2010 10:33 AM EST up reply actions

Yes

Have two games on a Saturday night.
St. John’s and another Division One game after that.
Getting Mark Jackson and Chris Mullen up ana drunning the program will pack the house every game.
Just stop and listen having Mark Jackson walking into a top recruits house and telling him all about St. John’s along with growing up in Brooklyn.
He did it and he would be able to convince local players along with getting two from outside the area.
He not only recruits but also coaches them at the same time.
Ask yourself, what true top highschool point guard would not want to be coached by one of the greatest to play the game at the college level.
That also goes for C.Mullens.

by Dziedzic on Mar 13, 2010 10:44 AM EST up reply actions

Mark Jackson is NOT the next head coach

Mark Jackson has less coaching experience than Kiki did..and we’ve all seen how that worked out. Kiki at least was an NBA assistant coach, a director of player development and a GM for two teams before he was named a Nets coach. Jackson has been an announcer, period.

There have been several openings for head coaching spot around the league where his name has been discussed. He hasn’t even been interviewed for any of those jobs. Why? I’d rather have Fratello.

Mullens is reportedly going to be hired by the Knicks as Donnie Walsh’s successor.

by Net Income on Mar 13, 2010 11:08 AM EST up reply actions

I doubt if Jackson would want to give up his announcing Gig, where he can B.S. for 2 1/2 hours. He is not " better than that". He knows he should be an Assistant Coach first, but that would be too much of a demotion.

Mullen/Jackson

Two weeks ago M.Jackson said on SNY that he would take the job if it came available to him.
Mullen is not mangement material at all.
Just look at his body of work at Golden State.
Would and should be a assistant coach or coach.
Just because Mullen was a good player does not mean he can run the business/basketball side of the Knicks.
He does not have it.

Sorry, but I will always associate St. John’s with the team playing in “Coming to America”.
Long Live Zamunda!

Well, I'm sure they can figure it out if they wanted to.

Staples Center hosts 2 NBA teams, an NHL team, a WNBA team as well as tons of other events. The only place in the nation that has more non NBA or NHL events is MSG. Plus, they have the Pac 10 tournament happening right now as well.

While it sounds confusing, computers take care of all that scheduling. All that being said, you make a good point about the St. John’s standpoint. It was one thing when they were on top of the college basketball map. They could play home games at MSG and get good crowds. Now, it’s tougher and probably makes more sense to play on campus games where the atmosphere is better and the students are right on top of the action.

New collective bargaining agreement is simple. Give small markets a larger share of the national tv revenue sharing pie, limit MLE's to teams under the lux tax threshold, allow owners to terminate one deal every other year provided players have played at least 3 years on it and limit raises to 5 and 10%

by Trueblood on Mar 13, 2010 2:29 PM EST up reply actions

So does this news mean that the Arena may be able to support College Hockey?

That could work considering the fewer # of seats, but would it be profitable considering the frequent conversion between College Hockey and Basketball?

by jerry25 on Mar 13, 2010 10:55 AM EST reply actions

Or the bigger question is...

….if it can support college hockey, that means it can fit an NHL sized rink as well since they are the same size. And if that’s the case, then where does that leave the Islanders? Will Wang use Barclay’s as leverage against the Long Island people or is it a legitimate destination possibility?

its an option but an unlikely one.

Based on the interior photo of the Barclays that was released last week, I have a hard time believing they can play any hockey there, college or otherwise. The arena was so tight, the permanent seating was practically overlapping the hardwood sidelines. How can they fit a hockey rink there?

Cal is a Hustler

He knows Proky has deep pcokets. He knows that Brooklyn is going to attract free agents. He knows that they have stock piled draft picks. He knows the Nets will be contending for Championships year in and year out soon. He wants a peice of it. He is a pimp looking to to hustle his way in Brooklyn.

Amen brother!

Living in Kentucky I see first hand just how manipulative his tactics are. When you listen to his call in show you would think that he came from Eastern Kentucky, was a coal miner’s son and used a “outdoor privy.” Hopefully with the theme of the Nets going forward with: New owner, New arena, New name, they will not take a step backwards to their past with Calipari.

Side note: (these are my own personal opinions and I do not expect anyone to agree with them.)

Kentucky moves on to the SEC championship game.

You'll have another chance to see Evan Turner tomorrow!

Anyone have game times?

Turner 31 pts. 10 boards, 10 turnovers and a bunch of assists.
He had both pressure baskets to tie game before each OT.

Cousins is a beast

If we have the 3rd pick (or the 4th and he’s still there) we HAVE to take him. He’s an animal. What a flat out stud.

by Andres B on Mar 13, 2010 3:22 PM EST up reply actions

Could Cousins play with BLopez?

BLopez model’s after Tim Duncan. Duncan played next to David Robinson. It worked pretty good.
In fact the only complaint was that Robinson was too soft. No problem with Cousins.

BLopez has been behaving more like a mid range shooter yesterday.
He was a PF in college. Why couldn’t he work with Cousins?

by jerry25 on Mar 13, 2010 3:54 PM EST up reply actions

Your Right

As you know from many of my writings, I have always said if we get D.Cousins we will have the second coming of Duncan/Robinson.
@jerry25 let’s try to convince Ryan243 on the importance of D.Cousins playing next to B.Lopez.
Guards can be replaced, however, PF like D.Cousins whom can also play center are hard to find.
C.Aldrich is also a great choice to play both positions in the NBA.
Another hint when a NBA person talks about the negative of a player it really means they are trying to water it down because they want him.
Example:
W.Johnson. They say he does a little of everything. He just does not do anything superior.
Are you kidding me, the guy plays like S.Pippen with far more superior jump shot.
He will even excel more in the NBA game with that sick shot.
Lets see, 6’8" and he jumps out of the gym.
D.Cousins, has a 7’7" wingspan.
If that does not help with rebounding and scoring down low, I don’t know what does.
You need bangers that can hit the fre throw better at the line.
D.Cousins/C.Aldrich are better at the line then Alibi, Favors.
Getting fouled in the NBA while banging means you go to the free throw line and win games.
Do you want another J.Boone at PF?
That is why Alibi, Favors are not my choice at all for the Nets.
Alibi basketball IQ seems similiar to Yi’s. Slow in the head for the game.

So I ask, do we need another Yi on our team?

No! No!
Just D.Cousins and some key trades to get another stud in this years draft if the underclassmen come out.
GO BROOKLYN NETS!

by Dziedzic on Mar 14, 2010 10:03 AM EDT up reply actions

NBAdraft.net now has Solomon Alibi for Nets with the #27 pick.

He is 7’1" Sophomore Center for FSU.
He could accept role as a backup Center.
Hope Dallas drops. May have to sweeten package to move higher.

Sounds Like Tampering

and some sort of conflict of interest in this potential deal. Why is Coach Cal (a college coach at Kentucky) talking about any sort of deals involving playing games at a Pro arena in Brooklyn that has yet to be constructed? Given the fact that Yormark was recently seen sitting behind the Kentucky bench and having negotiations of any kind during the college b-ball season brings up ethical considerations that the NCAA will certainly take a look at. What sort of deal do the Nets have with Kentucky?

NetsDaily: How about a NCAA Game Time Thread when potential top 4 picks are playing??

Right now its 2OT with Ohio State. Turner with 31 pts as he forces each OT.

by jerry25 on Mar 13, 2010 3:58 PM EST reply actions

Will do it today.

Wall, Cousins, Turner and Favors all playing today. So we’ll try it out.
