Buyout Deadline Less than 24 Hours Away With No Decision from Battie

ESPN's Chris Sheridan hints Tony Battie is considering a buyout, which would need to be done by midnight on Monday for him to join a team and be eligible for the playoffs. But Battie doesn't want to give up some of the $1.7 million still owed him on his $6.3 million contract if he's not guaranteed a paycheck from another team. There are several teams pursuing Zydrunas Ilgauskas, and Battie could be a back-up plan.

lol you gotta love the desperation on the part of the Celtics. We shocked them in their own arena and now they think the 12th man on this historically bad is the missing piece to winning a championship. Hopefully we can call up a cheap role player from the d-league to fill his roster spot if indeed chooses to walk.

All this nonsense about how Simmons and Battie not wanting buy-outs because they don’t want to lose a little money is ridiculous. Once you have the opportunity to play for a championship contender and win a ring that should be way more important then money. Just comes to show that certain players are not in to it for a championship that comes second to them and if that’s the case the Nets should do VERY well in summer luring everybody with money.

Battie would be smart to take a buyout, but dumb to go to the Celtics. They’re a sinking ship

by muwu on Mar 1, 2010 1:42 AM EST reply actions

The Celtics is a sinking ship all because of Doc Rivers not knowing how to play his Line-up. Already there basically in the play-offs yet Rivers plays Garnett extended mins even with his surgically repaired knee. Every game you see Garnett struggling to get up and down the court yet Rivers still keeps him out there instead of resting him for the play-offs. Good coaching is hard to find in this league regardless of wins and loss records foreal.

D-Leaguers Dwayne Jones and Alexander Johnson are waiting to each bring about 10 rebounds a game.

Perhaps Johnson or Yi can play the small forward spot (Yi on offense, Johnson on defense), so the Nets can go Brook Lopez, Yi Jianlian, Alexander Johnson, Courtney Lee, Devin Harris.

Hasn’t Dallas already signed Jones to a 10-day contract? So he’s out. I’m still liking Morris Almond for our call up. We’ve already missed out on Mike Harris too, someone signed him.

by muwu on Mar 1, 2010 6:23 AM EST reply actions

Dwayne Jones is still available. Dallas decidec not to sign him after bringing him in for a workout. Alexander Johnson is also available and I think Reggie Williams is available too.

Shaq is having surgery on his thumb today and could be out 6-8 weeks. I’m sure the Cavs could use a big man like Battie.

by supreme on Mar 1, 2010 6:50 AM EST reply actions

Big Z is going back to cleveland I think so for now they can get away by playing Jamison at C or Varejao for now.

by inimeg on Mar 1, 2010 7:18 AM EST reply actions

So much for Kiki’s proclamation that “we like our guys and want to do what is best for them,” or whatever he said. At the very least, the Nets should offer these guys their remaining salary minus what they would have to pay a D-leaguer for the remainder of the season. That is probably around $100,000-$150,000. The Nets would be neutral.

There’s no reason to hold these players hostage when they won’t be back next year.

I disagree with you here. These guys(Tony and Bobby) may have more on their plate than just the thought of winning a championship ring. We don’t know what their financial situations are, Battie may need that 1.6 in order to deal with expenses and taxes, who knows? I don’t blame him if he sat his butt down and collected what’s owed to him, in fact, i would think he’d be foolish not to take the cash.

You don’t walk away from guaranteed cash if you don’t know if you’ll be hired the next day.

You made a good point I see I see.

No one is holding anyone hostage. Battie’s agent has been doing his job, making calls, seeking interest in Battie’s services. IF, and they key word is IF, there was interest from Boston or any team in signing Battie for the minimum, they would negotiate a buyout with Thorn. Thorn would happily let him walk. The fact that Battie is still here means NO ONE is interested in him.

Exactly, noone wants to 5 win benchwarmers.

Why we gave up Krstic. Guy is hitting 3’s now.

by Tony on Mar 1, 2010 11:56 AM EST reply actions

If Battie has a team to go to, his agent would be stupid not to take 100,000 off his buyout for the chance to earn at least 1 million in post season.

With the 100,000 saved, a cheap Nets organization could buy a D-Leaguer, without even needing Proky’s approval.

Obviously, its not guaranteed anyone would pick him up.

by jerry25 on Mar 1, 2010 12:48 PM EST reply actions

Thorn/Kiki should be fired for giving up Krstic for nothing. Sad thing is, Krstic is not the worst amongst the litany of Thorn/Kiki screw-ups.

by JohnY on Mar 1, 2010 2:24 PM EST reply actions

I don’t think that the Nets had money to spend on krstic. He’d be an awesome back up center to have right now though.

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Mar 1, 2010 2:36 PM EST reply actions

Krstic isn’t worth the money he is being paid and he is not what we need anyway. He is soft and deficient in rebounding.

by Chris2 on Mar 1, 2010 3:45 PM EST reply actions

Krstic is a nice player, but not worth the money. He’s averaging 22.3 minutes a game and 8.1 points, but a mere half a block, 0.4 steals, 0.8 assists, and 4.7 rebounds. You’re getting some scoring with Krstic and almost nothing else. A center must get a rebound more than once every 4-5 minutes.

Dwayne Jones offers better rebounding and blocks for one-tenth the cost ($6,000,000 vs. $600,000) and no guarantees. But the Nets are too cheap for even that!

(FYI: The Mavs looked at Jones and Van Wafer last week and opted to sign just Wafer, the proven NBA scorer.)

by Barry Popik on Mar 1, 2010 5:38 PM EST reply actions

Players always go where the sure money is. Chance to play in the playoffs or to get the ring for that matter, is just a smoke screen.

by Dude on Mar 1, 2010 6:58 PM EST reply actions

Keeping these guys was pretty ridiculous assuming they woulda taken their salary minus the cost of a D-leaguer like someone else said.

Another missed opportunity to develop!

The way things are going I am getting less and less happy Rod Thorn will probably be around next year.
