Thorn Not So Sure Newark Will Be a Lure

Seven teams now have enough cap space to sign a top-tier free agent. So players are going to look at a lot of things before they make their decision on where to play. The Nets have a lot of lures, including the move to a modern arena. Rod Thorn, calling The Rock "a nicer building", still thinks "for a lot of people, it will be show me the money." He also predicts second tier players will do very well this summer.

Way to make me feel great about our chances this summer, Rod.

DO NOT OVERPAY ANY MEDIOCRE TALENTS!!
That needs to be our theme this summer…

You don’t need an economcis PhD to figure this one out. 10 max contracts, 4 max players.

It will certianly help compared to the old Swamp arena.

I take Gay and Lee all day, especially if we land Turner who will be a superstar guard.
by Mr. Dollar Bills on Mar 1, 2010 10:39 AM EST reply actions
Gay is only 23 yrs old with potential threw the roof why not go for him.
by Mikee21 on Mar 1, 2010 10:41 AM EST reply actions
Gay is young and athletic with room to improve. He is however an inefficient scorer and an indifferent defender. The Nets have more pressing needs.
by Tin Man on Mar 1, 2010 10:45 AM EST reply actions
Gay has already turned down a 5/50 contract from Memphis so it will probably take at least 5/60 to make them think about not matching. Plus the Nets will have to get involved in the bluffing game as Memphis draws out the process while posturing about matching.
They have to sign one of the PF’s before they should even think about Gay.

I have said it before and I’ll say it again. David Lee and Gay for 5yrs 60 each. If we get turner that will be great. If we get wall then we can trade devin and make room for a max in 2011. We have to make Gay and Lee back heavy deals w signing bonuses. Imagine this 2011..
Wall/twill
Gay/lee
Carmelo/cdr?
David lee/hump
Brook/dexter pittman
2011 champions baby lol

Tin Man,
I agree, we should address PF first. Depending on the draft we may not be pressed to sign Gay.

So, I see what is going to happen: the top level guys will stay with their teams or go to contenders, not the Nets. Then, Thorn, being Thorn, will refuse to overpay for the next teir and so be outbid by the Knicks and everyone else. So we are left with the same lousy team and the hope that Lee and Yi and CDR and Twill and the 4th pick in the draft will become stars. 25 wins next year.

The only thing guaranteed is our draft pick. The more we spend this off-season, the less we have to spend next season. Plus with RTs refusal to overpay, we’ll likely not be involved in free agency.
I agree with geo.
I think there will be a trade or two where we take on expiring deals for next summer, and have a go at free agency again in 2011.
Nets fans, don’t be upset when this happens!

Look at the Thunder and how they got from were WE are now to were THERE at now. They didn’t do it threw free agency they built from the ground up all this talk about top tier F.A and 2nd tier F.A is kinda ridiculous now we already have very good pieces and multiple draft picks in the future we don’t need to draft one thing this summer except for a power forward and we’ll be set. Champions aren’t built over night.

Yeah our location/arena is definitely not a great lure for most free agents in 2010, so if they’re going to sign with us it’s going to be because we offer the most money. The exception is perhaps David Lee who has said he loves living in New York and wouldn’t want to leave, so if the Knicks have other plans than we would likely have the inside track to signing him, which at this point seems like the most logical and realistic signing.
In 2011 the appeal of Brooklyn being one year away and the decline of competition for free agents will put us in a lot better position so if we pass on someone like Gay this year we could possibly make a run at Carmelo in ‘11 depending on if and how the CBA changes. AK47 (friends with Proky) and Richard Jefferson (if we could make amends) would be decent backup plans in 2011 if we fail to get ’Melo. Obviously 2012 free agent interest in us would be off the charts but we’ll have to resign Lopez and Lee that year so we won’t have the cap room.

Brooklyn has appeal? First time I ever heard that.

@Newark Nets
To play for the first team in New York City’s most populated and most culturally rich borough since the fabled Brooklyn Dodgers left would be a huge spotlight and a very exciting prospect for most players. If you can’t understand that then you are either incredibly delusional, in serious denial or really need to wake up. Simply, if Brooklyn was not an appealing place the team would not be so eager to move there.
by The Legend on Mar 1, 2010 5:40 PM EST reply actions
Is there anything that Thorn is sure of? This organization has became the laughing stock of the NBA and others too, except for bringing in Hump for Najera, the Nets are not trying to improve.
Developing young players will take years, FA this summer will obviously be a bust because how we are positioned in the bottom of the barrel, this rebuilding process is so dum, look at other teams around the league like Houston for example, they did not tear it down to rebuild.
This is all about the money to get the team sold with a low payroll, then in the process let’s call it rebuilding so we don’t look rediculous, those guys they have now may take them 3 or 4 years to be a wining team.

The Legend,
Put down the pipe dream, there is nothing in Brooklyn that anyone would want to go see. It’s a gangsta dump and a foolish move to put an arena there in Knicks land.

Ratner wants his real estate prject there, he does not care about the Nets or whether it will suceed with them.
The Rusky simply will have a hangout near Brighton Beach.
Brooklyn is a mistake for the NBA.
