Cavs Toy With Nets, Put them Away in the Fourth

The Nets have 47 losses this season, and it seems like most of them have followed the same script. Again on Tuesday in Cleveland, they hung around with a stronger team for about three quarters, before their opponent put them away early in the fourth. The Nets actually led the best team in basketball by eight midway through the first quarter, but the Cavs took the lead for good early in the second. It was a 13-2 Cleveland run to start the fourth that put the game away. The Nets didn't have much trouble scoring, but allowed the Cavs, who were led by LeBron James' 32 points and 11 assists, to shoot 53 percent from the field. Despite his bruised shin, Jarvis Hayes had one of his best games as a Net, scoring 19 points on 8-13 shooting. Courtney Lee added 24 points and seven rebounds, Brook Lopez had 23 and 14, and Keyon Dooling finished with 11 points and seven assists. Chris Douglas-Roberts did not play, but tweets that he was healthy. It was the Nets seventh straight loss, all by fewer than 10 points.

the bench didn’t see the court the whole night. oh wait all they did was see the court because they didn’t play.

one question.
why would you start the fourth by unloading the bench?
That put us away in the game.

I thought they played pretty well. Courtney and Brook were excellent. See, I told you Courtney is worth keeping. Why no CDR tonight?

Much better than I thought, were there no lbj we would had won this game already.
Just some random thought, can Dooling play SG and free Harris to PG?

Look at the +/- for our starters and for our bench. Why did Kiki let they bench play in the 4th quarter is right, yet not play Hump at all?? Loved the way Clee and Jarvis played tonight. I know everyone on this site hates on the whole team but I have been a supporter of both guys all year. Hey atleast we covered the spread. @netincome does this CDRs DNP mean a trade is coming?

For more pleasant thoughts:
Wall and Kentucky are playing now on ESPN-U.
Also, for what its worth, Avery Johnson was interviewed on Pardon The Interruption. He said he was available to coach Paraphrase: “the plan was to take 1-2 years off” – “I’m just waiting for the phone to ring.”
I just hope Proky means business at his meeting this weekend.
We don’t seem to have a clue on what communications he has had with Thorn/directly or otherwise. Maybe now word will go back to Russia that things Aren’t Quiet on the Western Front, and action/money are needed ASAP.

But why didnt we save some energy to fight Bucks? I dont understand, if Kiki wants to win this game then dont let bench play “pure benchly” or give them less time on court, if kiki wants to give up then why not just let bench play longer?
by BogutFan on Feb 9, 2010 9:36 PM EST reply actions
Kiki plays who he likes, not whose good. why are CDR and Simmons not getting minutes? Why isnt boone playing? he could at least try using them but he wont, and when a lineups not working, hell keep that lineup in the game. its as if he WANTS to lose. They should get someone to be the else to be the head coach the 2nd half of the season and reevaluate the nets from there

ShawnG, I think you’re wrong. You’re right about the coach, but wrong about saying that the team has no talent. They are talented, just young, and mentally screwed by losing so many games.
by Gerard Himself on Feb 9, 2010 9:38 PM EST reply actions
Our “WINGS” were playing so well that’s why CD-R was benched the whole game smh this guy needs to go back to his GM duties and give this team a real coach because if that was the case what was Hassel doing out there man Geez Kiki is something else give me a real excuse.
by mikee21 on Feb 9, 2010 9:46 PM EST reply actions
Can’t blame it all on the coach if he has no bench, but he put them in all at once and everyone was cold off the bench.
by jj on Feb 9, 2010 9:48 PM EST reply actions
I said we didn’t have adequate talent, not none.
We have no backup C (Hassell was guarding Shaq at one point) and no defensive PF. They had 48 points in the paint.
Plus we played a one-dimensional shooter all game because he’s our only consistent outside threat.
Lopez, Lee, Williams, and a healthy Harris are building blocks. Yi is a good piece, hopefully a real coach can get him to play D.
by ShawnG on Feb 9, 2010 9:51 PM EST reply actions
I don’t get why CDR didn’t play. As I’ve said before, in my opinion, CDR should be coming off the bench, but he should be getting 20-25 minutes a night in that role. That’s where he could really thrive, and he’s had a couple of games recently when that’s been the case, at least for stretches. Either he has some injury, or something very weird is going on.

I can’t stand looking at the Cavs boxscores…that team has nothing without lebron. its freaking ridiculous. there is not a guy on that team that scares me or shows any potential besides Lebron James.
It is so annoying

Before I thought there was a plan with Kiki and Rod, regarding who gets PT. Eg. if trying to market Hassell or Battie, by giving them some PT.
Now it seems like Kiki and Rod aren’t talking, so I don’t know what to make of Kiki benching CDR and playing Battie so much, all of a sudden.
Starters were +11 on average over about 37 min. The 5 bench players were -18 on average over about 11 min.
Bench was good the other day, when CDR was playing.
Battie looks so small next to Shaq, yet he is listed at 6’11"? He looks like he wants to prove he is a SF. That’s not his purpose. Surely Nets could bring someone Big up from D-League who could do better than Battie.

@Justin Agreed 100%
And trust Lebron knows that this team is nothing without him they proved it last year in the playoffs. Wade knows the same thing with Miami. All the Nets have to do is keep showing this fight they have in them for the rest of the season trust these players are noticing.

No he wasn’t out because of back spasms. Kiki said it himself “he didn’t fit the flow of the game our wings were playing so well” then he stated that “MAYBE” the back spasms had something to do with it but he just didn’t fit the rotation. That is what Kiki said so I’m confused how he had a full practice yesterday a full practice today but yet he didn’t play tonight because of back spasms? then why did he have a full practice? don’t get blinded by Kiki’s foolishness PLEASE!

“Surely Nets could bring someone Big up from D-League who could do better than Battie.”
Dwayne Jones is averaging 15 rebounds a night. Worth a try as a C-PF.
Mike Harris (perhaps the D League’s best player) would also help with rebounding and scoring from the forward position.
Trade Jarvis Hayes (gotta be worth something after today’s game to a playoff team), Trenton Hassell, Bobby Simmons (a good 3-pt. shooter and only 3 months left on his contract), Tony Battie, and Josh Boone.
Still no trades and no D-League call-up?
by Barry Popik on Feb 9, 2010 10:17 PM EST reply actions
It was a good game and everybody played hard even though the Cavs were kinda taking it easy. All starters are in double digit scoring and over 50% FG. The game was lost with the bench. Just look at Hump’s and Williams’ +/-. They are -23 and -24 respectively. If we can keep up the efforts, the season is not a total loss.
by Tomas on Feb 9, 2010 10:18 PM EST reply actions
Lebron -2, Yi +15, This proves Yi is the man, and needs 40 min a game. He should be given an extension so he can have peace of mind knowing where he is going to be. That the Nets are commited to him not just Kiki. This proves Kiki was right about Yi.

The Nets listed him on their injury report today and he didn’t play tonight. I guess it’s all part of Kiki’s grand plan to ruin CDR’s career. I also heard the Kiki shot Kennedy and knows where Hoffa is buried.

In fact, looking at the box score, the entire bench was horrific. Allf the starters had positive +/-, while all of the bench players were negative. T-Will was 23 and Jump was -22. Yi had the best +/ of all the Nets at +15.
Bottom line is that the game really turned at the end of the 1st / beginning of the 2nd, and the end of the 3rd / beginning of the 4th, when the bench came in. Bench lost us the game. Leads me to think that CDR should have played.

As recently as 4-5 weeks ago I thought there was no way the Nets would top the all-time NBA futility record — they couldn’t help but to back into a few wins, maybe go on some sort of a mini-hot streak (like winning 3 of 7 or something) and finish with double-digit wins.
Now, I think they will break the record. They are a really, really, really bad team.

This is not Yi’s fault. When in doubt blame it on Kiki blame EVERYTHING on Kiki this is all his fault. Hayes and Harris collision Kiki’s fault. Dooling’s bad hip Kiki’s fault. 0-18 Kiki’s fault. Martin not resigning kiki’s fault luring him to Denver. Our current record Kiki’s fault. Team chemistry Kiki’s fault. The bench playing poorly tonight Kiki’s fault. EVERYTHING negative from here on out is Kiki’s fault.

Nets are putting up the effort. We have a couple of worthy pieces to keep and build with. We also should be able to win a couple games if we keep playing with this effort. In the NBA you need one star or a bunch of all star caliber players together to win. Lets hope for WALL! LETS GET TO 10!

When the nets finally decide to give up on Yi, CDR, TWill(great decisions tonite!) and bring in some real talent thing will improve dramatically. Lose Kiki also. CDR didn’t play because he tweeted that he was happy that Vecsey reported the real reason that Del Harris left. Namely, that Del left because of the intrigue involving his agent and Kiki – and not because CDR and TWill got on Del’s last nerve. Trust me on this one.

@Nets Daily
I think Kiki may be the worst coach I’ve ever seen but let’s get real on this one. I don’t have a problem that he declined to use a borderline player, who basically has been on strike for the last 6 weeks, and who complained about back spasms earlier in the day. If he thought that CDR was less than 100%, sitting him out was reasonable decision.
If Kiki was truly out to get CDR he doesn’t have to invent injuries and come up with elaborate conspiracies. He can simply sit him next to Boone at the end of the bench or send him to the D-league.
Ask yourself this. If the Nets had a real coach what would’ve happened to CDR because of his petulance this season? Can you imagine Jerry Sloan or Larry Brown putting up with his antics?
An inefficient wing who can’t shoot 3’s, doesn’t get to the line, isn’t very athletic and doesn’t defend very well really should be on their best behavior.
by Tin Man on Feb 10, 2010 2:13 AM EST reply actions
CD-R was averaging 17+ ppg before this clown Vandeweghe took over. It’s funny how the kid is being called “inefficient” now, when he had been one of the most efficient playeron this team before Kiki’s agenda killed his production.
Kiki’s pets (like Lee) have been far more inefficient all year long, yet they’ve received special treatment. Frank was benching Lee during his last 3 games as a Nets HC because he wasn’t producing. That tells you enough. Then Kiki takes over and gives him the starting role back no matter how much he was sucking. I like Yi, but he’s been given special treatment, too.
Lee’s playing better lately, and I’m happy, but come on, get real. Kiki’s pets have been given special treatment, and it’s not fair that a kid like CD-R, who was playing great prior to Kiki’s arrival, is being thrown under the bus like this.

Exactly, lets not pretend otherwise. I’m sure Kiki would have been satisfied if the Twitter Boys took the fall for that one instead of the truth coming out, exposing him and the games he has been playing behind the scenes, CDR commenting on it just compounded everything. I don’t get why people are thrilled to see this kid getting benched by this clown Kiki because that had nothing to do with basketball and more with the garbage that is going on behind the scenes.
As for the game, Courtney Lee played one heck of a game, I was very pleased with what I saw. How come he doesn’t play like that every night? Consistency would do wonders for this kid but just a solid effort from him and Hayes tonight.
There was no good reason why The Hump only played 11 minutes tonight, because Yi was getting knocked around down there. There were several plays last night where Yi showed just how soft he is, the best play he had all night was the aggressive two handed dunk off of the lopez feed, otherwise he didn’t do anything to warrant playing 40 minutes. Kiki’s “agenda” at work. We needed some toughness out there, but politics trump basketball every time with this joke of an organization, being run by a bunch of grown children, one of whom has an AARP card.
The team competed, like they have been doing for the past few games, but came up short. We didn’t miss Harris and his nonsense at all. The rotations were awful. Lopez also needs to play a lot tougher, the stats looked good but there times tonight where he also looked soft.

“Tin Man Says:

Not that he is the greatest, but CDR was fine when Lawrence Frank was coaching and was a very productive player. The only ‘problem’ was that Chris was openly voicing his displeasure with losing. Then Frank gets fired and Kiki begins his nonsense and the kid begins attitude and game goes south. It’s not a coincidence.
That said, CDR needs to be professional and gut it out because either he’ll be a) traded to a team where he can learn from actual pros and actually be coached, something that the young players on this team need but aren’t getting due to the ineptitude and backstage buffoonery of Kiki and Rod Thorn, or b) he’ll be here under a new coaching regime that will provide the same. He should be under a self imposed gag order for the rest of the season, that way whatever happens stays inside the locker room and people will stop jumping down his throat unnecessarily over nonsense.
by Mr. Dollar Bills on Feb 10, 2010 6:42 AM EST reply actions
@Andres, Dollar Bill.
CDR was scoring points because he was taking a lot shots because the Nets basically had 8 healthy players for the 1st month of the season. His True Shooting Pct is 51% which is below average and any team that gives 15+ shots a night to someone that inefficient will struggle to score points
Scoring points on a bad team means nothing without looking at the underlying numbers. Someone is going to average decent numbers because even the worst teams will manage to score 80-90 points a night. The two worst Nets teams before this season also had young wings that put up respectable PPG. One was 22 and averaged 19 ppg and one was 24 and averaged 16 ppg. Bubbles Hawkins and Dennis Hopson were those players and neither were very good. Both were out of the league shortly after and both had better attitudes than CDR.
How many wings can you think of that can’t shoot 3’s and fail to get to the line (3 attempts per 36 min.) that are the focal points of their team’s offense? Somehow CDR and his followers seem to feel he is entitled to be the “Man”. He’s 3rd on the team in minutes played and somehow the Nets are out to ruin his career? This is really comical.
I think CDR has a chance to be a decent player if he works on his game and becomes a more well rounded player. Unfortunately for him, he may never get a chance to prove it because his Terrell Owens routine is wearing thin.
