Could the Nets Become "The Official Team of New York City?"

Will Leitch of Deadspin, writing in New York Magazine, asks: "Is it worse to be a Nets fan or a Knicks fan?" Right now, it's still better to be fan of the Knicks, but that could change. Citing the imminent arrival of the "awesomely crazy Russian dude", John Wall, etc. etc., he writes the Nets "could take over for the Knicks as the official team of the city". As for now? "Everything is at the bottom right now."

One word NO!

by JustinNJ on Feb 9, 2010 8:11 PM EST reply actions

Of course it COULD happen. Could the Nets become the ‘Clippers of NYC’? Yes as well.

by Antoine on Feb 9, 2010 8:18 PM EST reply actions

Nets=Washington Generals. The Globetrotters stooge. Nets = NBA’s stooge. Lebron and Shaq just funnin on the Nets.

Ah, the storied Knicks franchise, which hasn’t won an NBA championship in 37 years. The Knicks are NOT the Lakers.

by Net Income on Feb 9, 2010 8:54 PM EST reply actions

BUT THEY HAVE THE NEW YORK CITY FAN BASE NONETHELESS!

by JustinNJ on Feb 9, 2010 8:57 PM EST reply actions

They do now.

by Net Income on Feb 9, 2010 8:59 PM EST reply actions

This is best case scenario for the Nets…

That makes the past 4 years all worth it

Are the stars aligning for the finally, or will we be stuck with “the same old Nets”

by NetLogic on Feb 9, 2010 8:59 PM EST reply actions

It would not be “the same old Nets”, if they move to Newark permanently. Play in the state that supports their fanbase. A facility that can support mass transportation. An owner that cares about the team and not a real estate project.

by JustinNJ on Feb 9, 2010 9:11 PM EST reply actions

Regardless if the Knicks haven’t won a championship, they’ve achieved enough to be considered on of the more elite teams in NBA history.

by Antoine on Feb 9, 2010 9:22 PM EST reply actions

same old nets ? arent the “same old nets” the nets who won only 4 games this season ?

they are coming to brooklyn to start off fresh , thats what we all want and need

i cant wait to see the “new nets” ..

by BrS1 on Feb 9, 2010 9:22 PM EST reply actions

They are not starting off fresh due to any potential move. They are starting off fresh because they went on a slashing spree of salaries with all intentions to get a big time free agent this summer and because the our owner is horrible. They only can go UP from here! We might not get that big free agent, but, we will get a stud in the draft and hopefully that guy is John WALL! HE will help us get over the hump. Now we just have to rid ourselves of the RAT. WHEN THE RAT LEAVES, WE SHINE! Even if it is in NEW JERSEY!

w.e my man

all im saying is , i cant wait til i see the brooklyn nets jerseys.

Hmm……. id ve really pissed if my home team wouldnt support me.

SIGH!!!

thats why we are loosing, a voodoo fan cursed us!!! :D :D :D

by Mr. omG on Feb 9, 2010 10:04 PM EST reply actions

Wear the NEW JERSEY away jerseys and see us win!

by JustinNJ on Feb 9, 2010 10:47 PM EST reply actions

The Nets will always be a Jersey team. I don’t care where they move, how long they’re there, how much they win. THey will always be seen as the team that moved from NJ. And I couldn’t be happier.

by NJ4Life on Feb 9, 2010 10:50 PM EST reply actions

This team will never surpass the knicks in popularity. The Nets aren’t the only team with cap space this summer. The Knicks also have significant cap space. If the team was called the the New York Nets than maybe but what about fans in the other boros such as the Bronx,Manhattan,Queens, etc. Do you really think that they will support a “Brooklyn” Nets team?

by Hex on Feb 9, 2010 10:54 PM EST reply actions

Wishful thinking! Knicks are always an official NY team. The fan base is too deeply rooted.

by CONetsfan on Feb 9, 2010 11:30 PM EST reply actions

NYC will always be a Knicks town, NO MATTER WHAT. Even in Brooklyn, nets will be second thought. Sucks, but thinking otherwise would be crazy.

whens the last time anybody moved from bergen county to brooklyn looking for prosperity?

by NJNRay on Feb 10, 2010 12:30 AM EST reply actions

I’d like to see the Nets succeed during the Newark layover and then fail terribly in BK.

by CONetsfan on Feb 10, 2010 1:14 AM EST reply actions

Did not happen when we made the finals 2 years in a row and were fun to watch and it won’t happen now.

by OPutney on Feb 10, 2010 11:55 AM EST reply actions

The Nets will always be considered the black sheep of NYC even if they do end up in Brooklyn. The Knicks have been around longer and they date when the NBA first formed hence they are one of the three teams to still exist from the innagural season besides the Celtics and Warriors, who were originally in Philadelphia at the time. Honstely, many of those long time Knicks fans will never convert to the Nets and if any do, they will be a minority at most. I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a more of Brooklyn influence at Knicks game over at MSG because I did see a stand for Brooklyn Burger over there. The Nets should be marketed as a NJ team the way the Devils are.
