Thorn: "Not Looking to Trade CDR"

Rod Thorn told Fred Kerber the Nets are "not looking to trade Chris", adding there's been interest. "I can understand why [teams] like him. He has talent and a small salary." Thorn also said he doesn't have a short list of coaching candidates and Kiki Vandeweghe will "probably" last the season. Interest remains in Trenton Hassell (Toronto) and Josh Boone, but Thorn doesn't expect a trade before the deadline.
- No change in sight for banged-up, 4-46 Nets - Fred Kerber - New York Post

What A Great Way To Start My Day No Way Do The Nets Trade This Guy!!!!
by mikee21 on Feb 8, 2010 6:53 AM EST reply actions
Of course teams are interested in CDR, the kid can score when given the opportunity. The only ones that think that he’s worthless are a pack of clueless, haughty taughty Nets fans that care more about what some kid is writing on his twitter instead of what happens out on the court.
He got hurt the other night but in the last two games he was starting to get into his reserve role pretty well. He was going through the motions in January and while I am critical of him for that, I’m glad to see that his aggressiveness has returned. I don’t blame him or any other of these young players if they want out of here because the front office has screwed them over and the fanbase in general is a joke for how they act about freakin’ twitter. People act like CDR, a self professed homebody, is out in the street, doing drugs, or getting locked up like other knuckleheads…his only crime is immaturity and ill advised outspokenness, something that 23 year olds are not immune too.

CD-R is an All-American well respected besides here which is not surprising because y’all Net Fans hate everybody on this team besides Lopez and even him y’all bash sometimes. It’s only a matter of time before he gets his starting position back. Really can y’all blame CD-R at all? No you can’t why because when L-Frank was coaching CD-R was averaging around 17 to 18 PPG. Then here comes Kiki a NON COACH who praises the ground Yi walks on and then what less touches for CD-R means less points. Face it people with a real coach on our team CD-R #‘s would improve dramatically he obviously could score shouldn’t of been drafted that high he is a steal for us y’all must of not seen this guy play in college PERIOD.
by mikee21 on Feb 8, 2010 7:23 AM EST reply actions
That’s the one thing I will give Frank, he knew that the kid can score and he got the most out of him, even if he had to play him out of position. The effort CDR gave under Frank on both ends of the floor is superior to what he gives now under this joke Kiki, and it’s not a coincidence. Frank had CDR involved and put him a position to use his strengths, which is scoring in the mid range area and getting to the cup.
Now that Kiki’s attempt to make Yi a star has blown up in his face, hopefully CDR will get more minutes in the role that he was made for: scoring 6th man.

@mikee21 I would like to see him(cdr)get a rebound,an assist, and stop someone. Also can he break into a fast walk at least when he is getting back on d

I dont care. If he’s unhappy he should go.
I am far more interested in the possibility of Toronto wanting Hassell. He makes $4.35 million. Amir JOhnson, also an expiring contract, makes $3.8 million. Good risk/reward.
by Net Income on Feb 8, 2010 7:43 AM EST reply actions
Frank C,
I’d like to see any guard on the Nets stop someone, because none of them do, not even Courtney Lee who people make out to be some all nba defender yet he hasn’t shut anyone down this season.
And Lee isn’t grabbing boards(3.4rpg) or racking up assists(1.8apg) either, so i don’t see why he gets a pass yet CDR gets trashed for averaging 4rebs and 1.8 apg a game.
by Mr. Dollar Bills on Feb 8, 2010 7:46 AM EST reply actions
The story gave the impression that Thorn isn’t looking to trade anyone before he speaks with Proky (maybe on Feb 12).
However, the quote from one of the agents was that Thorn was trying to move people like Simmons.
Which is correct?
He was never asked the question if there was interest in Yi?
Were there any other beat reporters in Detroit to interview Rod?
by jerry25 on Feb 8, 2010 7:56 AM EST reply actions
There is no conflict. He may have had discussions with other teams but needs the sign off from Prokhorov.
Nets like Yi.
All the beat reporters were in Detroit.
And “not looking to trade” means not calling around and offering CDR. Doesn’t mean offers aren’t being accepted.
This is Thorn we are talking about. He always displays the same poker face this time of year. And it’s a LONG time til the trade deadline.

It’s Obvious Net Fans has some type of grudge with CD-R. However I’m a big fan and will remain one weather he is or is not on this team “BUT” I find it funny how during preseason he was averaging over 20 ppg EACH GAME, Under L.Frank he was the star of this team everybody saying most improved player of the year now once again Kiki comes in and this guy cools down a little seems a little strange if you ask me. Not one player besides Lopez has outshine him this season in terms of the young players we have. If you come from a winning team in Memphis to this type of team getting ready to make history, starting the season 0-18 PEOPLE 0-18 you’ll be complaining too. Then you have a COACH who doesn’t know what he’s doing AGAIN you’ll be complaining too, Then to top it off you have reporters who come up with fake stories and don’t know what there talking about then having FANS read them thinking its true always complaining about you, AGAIN you’ll be complaining too.

You have to remember too, that even if the Nets are not looking to make a trade now, they are actively engaged in discussions to get a head start on how teams value their assets, so that they can better work a deal in the offseason. The legwork begins now.
by gsloots on Feb 8, 2010 8:33 AM EST reply actions
I just don’t get it what do they see in Yi? What has Yi done for this staff to love him so much??? It was a Decision Either Yi on the Bench replaced with Humphries or CD-R on the Bench replaced with Hayes. Well that’s the hardest decision ever seeing how Kiki is Oh So In Love with Yi lets bench one of our best scorers on the team instead of giving him enough touches to give this guy Yi enough touches and he does nothing with them except BRICK BRICK BRICK! SOFT SOFT SOFT! At least When CD-R was giving a chance under L.Frank he did something with it by averaging over 20PPG!
by mikee21 on Feb 8, 2010 8:39 AM EST reply actions
I wonder who exactly in the front office likes Yi. Ratner doesn’t know or care about the game. Thorn doesn’t seem thrilled. I guess that leaves Yormark and Yiki. I think an interview with each front office employee should go on record about their assessment of him so Proky knows who to dump. If the guy didn’t have 1.3 billion fans he’d be in the D-league. This historic bust leading our team to an historic low is still liked by the “team”. That pretty much sums up the reason why we are the way we are.
by Mr. Big on Feb 8, 2010 8:48 AM EST reply actions
Nets “liking” Yi means they wouldn’t give him away, which they shouldn’t.
However, if there isn’t interest in Yi, that can’t happen unless someone like CDR is included.
Will wait until hear other beat reporters take. I assume there were all together at mtg., but we will see.
Surprising how Thorn never mentions Proky or even alludes to him (eg time table for a new coach). Maybe because technically Ratner is still in charge and Prokhorov just needs to be informed, even though we know that isn’t the case.
I assume all the owners will be in Dallas, so don’t be surprised if we were misled about a March meeting of the Board re. Proky. They could have a secret meeting and reveal the results later.

We can just imagine what Proky will do in Thorn meeting"
Proky:
1. I’ll keep you on for an extra year to see what you can do. What do we do with Kiki?
2. Any ideas for a new coach? Lets start interviewing and narrow down the list for when I take control in March.
3. What trades are you working on?
How much mony is Yi bringing to the business? Do you think he will be worth keeping? What could we get for him?
Thorn reply: No interest; Proky: We’re screwed (western interpretation)!
4. What is your plan for the upcoming draft?
Thorn: Everyone says John Wall, but I like this kid Evan Turner of Ohio State. But there is less than a 50% chance to get either. Proky: Then we May be screwed.
5. What should we do in free agency.
Thorn: Noone wants to come here. We should get a PF but only possibilities are DLee, Amare and Boozer. We would have to pay top price to get any of them. You would have to do battle with the Knicks to get DLee.
Proky: I will enjoy beating the Knicks!

The Bulls will be looking to dump Tyrus Thomas now. I think they would take Yi for Thomas. Both play the same position, thus by dumping for another PF, you are not losing numbers on the depth chart. The Bulls also do not have a priority on getting a defensive player back, they need scoring. I hope Thorn is looking at this option

@1milord:
If both Hayes and Harris are out next 2 games, then CDR will get plenty of opportunity.
Maybe Kiki should showcase Boone to show teams that he is no worse than previously believed.
@Adam II:
Isn’t Thomas a restricted FA this year?
Tyrus was suspended for conduct detrimental to team (meaning he had a flare up about doing things his way and not thinking of the team. I think the Nets are trying to stay away from those kind of players, but sure he is Much more valuable as a player than Yi – neither are starters.
If I’m not mistaken, Nets could re-sign Thomas for $6.2 million. I doubt if they would do that and ruin the cap space. That means he would only be rented for the remainder of the year and bring with him a bad influence on a bad club.
Having said why Nets wouldn’t take Thomas, I still don’t think Chicago would take Yi, but I would love to be convinced otherwise.
by jerry25 on Feb 8, 2010 11:00 AM EST reply actions
CDR is a very capable scorer making peanuts. If the Nets are serious about targeting elite free agents next offseason, they will need players like CDR to fill out their roster and provide a punch off the bench for a mimimal cost. I don’t think this is a smokescreen at all. Failing getting back a lottery pick or a top prospect, trading CDR makes little sense.
by Chris2 on Feb 8, 2010 11:01 AM EST reply actions
Is there evidence for any other team left in the NBA that likes Yi? Maybe some team like Orlando that wouldn’t need Yi for defense? Has Rod been asked lately how much he likes Yi? (wouldn’t believe the response anyway)
The solution may be to combine Yi and CDR and get something good back. Yi won’t play much next year if FA goes as Nets hope. CDR may not either, as Rod has indicated that he is playing out of position at the SF.
CDR may not be given much PT next year, with all the new players expected (Evan Turner would be my starting SG).
However, CDR is hard to move for something good because of his low salary. Yi + CDR is solution.
CDR has demonstrated that he isn’t happy when not given significant PT. However, he could still be moved on draft day, to say move up on either 1st or Dallas picks.
by jerry25 on Feb 8, 2010 11:09 AM EST reply actions
This news….is what is called common sense GM-ing 101. A few posters towards the end are getting it.
Why would the Nets trade CDR straight up at his measly salary? They wouldn’t – and that’s what Thorn said (duh!). Like the article says – at his salary he would not bring back any value. I wouldn’t take that that to mean that they wouldn’t potentially package him in the “right deal”.
The “trouble” he has caused is very minor. He is vastly over-rated by many fans (like a cult hero of sorts – which defies explanation – is what it is) and thinks he is God’s gift (which feeds his “followers” on twitter – lol), but that is mostly BS.
He is certainly a potentially good offensive role player off the bench. Instant offense type. As soon as he gets with that program and maybe matures and tones done the self-worship self aggrandizing, he’ll be better.
Also, why would the Nets de-value CDR by saying that they “want” to trade him. So they lose leverage? LOL – c’mon kids, you know better than that!
by My 2 cents LOL on Feb 8, 2010 11:09 AM EST reply actions
If CDR remains with Nets, his value is likely to rise again for balance if this year, because he would be given more PT than anywhere else. Then get something good on draft day.
I could see LAC willing to take Yi + something else (pick(s)?) for Marcus Camby, since they won’t make playoffs, so they might as well get younger. Not sure why some needy sports writer hasn’t suggested that? Camby has said he would prefer to remain in LA, but would understand if he is traded.
Camby could get the Nets to 10 wins and might be re-signed for say 2 years at 9 million (Yi’s expected salary, so it’s a wash).
The bottom line is that I think Nets can trade Yi, but they would have to sweeten the offer with future draft pick(s).
by jerry25 on Feb 8, 2010 11:22 AM EST reply actions
At this point I think we should hold off on trading Yi. We need to wait until after the summer and see who we get. Let’s face it, as much as some of us don’t like him, he would be a nice guy for the second unit.
The future of this team is so uncertain it is kind of sad, but I guess that’s just how it goes sometimes. We’ll see.
by Killlaacam on Feb 8, 2010 11:31 AM EST reply actions
I find it hard to believe that Thorn is going into the trade deadline with his hands tied and having no idea what Proky really wants to do. What would happen if Toronto called the Nets today and offered us Bosh. Could the Nets make that deal or would they have to sit there and say “sorry, we don’t know what we can or cannot do, have to wait for Proky to be officially confirmed”.
Is Rod Thorn really a lame duck or is he playing head games with opposing GM’s?
by Mike on Feb 8, 2010 11:37 AM EST reply actions
I’m not sure how Thorn would know that Kiki will probably last the season, unless he has discussed this subject with Prokhorov (no evidence they have even talked)?
Unless Thorn has direct knowledge that Proky has someone in mind who is presently coaching, I would think Proky would want to make an attempt to get a new coach after arriving.
That would turn the attention of the Nets horrible situation.
First though, Proky will probably get some recommendations from the people he knows in Toronto, and probably Mark Cuban will approach Prokhorov to give advice.
Cuban can’t wait to practice his Russian. Maybe he will give his opinion of Avery Johnson in Russian. Cuban’s thoughts may be more influencial that Thorn’s.
by jerry25 on Feb 8, 2010 11:42 AM EST reply actions
For those who think that Thorn isnt going to trade CDR you mistaken. If the right deal comes along CDR is gone.
As for CDR’s talent, he is where he should have been at the beginning of the year. Coming off the bench! CDR’s talent was never suited for starting SF. It was to be a 6th man. He can come off the bench and provide this team will scoring and energy if he gets rid of the sour puss face he is making.

How could Thorn have told Del Harris’s agent, that Del would not be named head coach? How does Thorn know that?
Sounds to me Thorn knows something we don’t.
How come we don’t see Thorn resigning. A man of his experience and character would of quit by now, unless of course he has been told to stay.
Connect the dots. Proky and his people are now pulling the strings.

Why has Boone been glued to the bench for the past month? The guy has shown when he get consistent minutes, he can actually contribute. He knows how to play real NBA defense and is a much better rebounder than Yi. Im not saying Boone is part of the Nets’ future, but he might help them win a few games. Yi, clearly is not helping. The fact that Kiki slides Yi over to the center position when Brook needs a rest, just shows how clueless he is.

The Nets always draft best athlete available. They obviously believe character issues can be resolved with proper patience and guidance. As for being able to play the actual game, who cares. LOL
by Mike on Feb 8, 2010 12:20 PM EST reply actions
Every GM wants to draft the next MJ, Kobe, Garnett etc. That is why they roll the dice at draft time. The Knicks drafted Jordan Hill thinking that he was the best big man, purely on athletic talent. Brook Lopez was pasted up by 9 other clubs because he was not athletic enough. T-Will was drafted #11 by the Nets mainly because of his athletic talent. It’s tough to draft role players early in the draft. And latter in the draft, clubs are still looking to get lucky, and go with the athletic players. I have a feeling that clubs will now draft for players who can actually play the game. Trying to nab the next superstar usually backfires, unless you are picking #1 or #2.

Jerry -
I believe if the Bulls renounce Thomas, the qualifying offer of $6.3 mil is removed. Thus, Thomas would no longer be a restricted FA and can leave as a unrestricted FA at the end of the season. So, any team looking to acquire Thomas would have to evaluate whether they could request the Bulls to renounce and whether they have a likelihood of resigning Thomas on the open market.
Thomas does sound indeed like a bad cookie. He has shown immaturity every year in the league, and has grown frustrated with his playing time. Flags should always be raised about guys thinking they deserve playing time and openly gripping about it. CDR does this to a much more tame degree. However, with the Nets, Thomas would likely be the starter/receive significant minutes. Thus, who knows, maybe a change of scenary would do him well.
Thomas can be had for dirt cheap these days. Even though Yi for Thomas is not a trade of equals, Yi at least provides some offense for a team that has been shopping around for more guys who can score. Thus, this scenario allows the Bulls to recover a player at an indentical position while getting something of value for their problem child.

via bullsbythehorns (bulls blog so yeah, he knows more about Tyrus than you guys"
“Thomas is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma. He has infinite potential and unlimited immaturity. He’s a team-first player as long as he gets his minutes. He’s a big man who converts only 53 percent of his shots at the rim and would much rather take jump shot after jump shot than bang bodies down low. In fact, over half his shots are chucked up from the outside. Which is how he likes it.
As Tyrus put it last November: "I shoot a lot of shots a day, so when I’m in the game and I feel like I want to shoot the ball, I’m going to shoot it. I’m not going to take a shot I haven’t worked on, so whatever I shoot is a shot I know I can make, and if I miss it, oh well."
That quote has been festering in my Bulls notebook all season. To me, it says almost everything you need to know about Tyrus Thomas the basketball player."
If you guys don’t like Yi, how will you treat Tyrus Thomas any different? Now why couldn’t we sign a guy like Chris Richard like the Bulls did?
“Richard came dutifully off the bench against the Heat, snared 7 rebounds, blocked a couple shots, and banged every opposing body in his general vicinity. When he left the game, there was blood on his jersey.”

Why would the Nets want another headache? If Proky is really going to spend money, players like Thomas are not needed. Only teams without many options pick up problem players. The Nets have plenty of options.

We were stuck playing him upfront while Hayes was out for so long, and TWILL didn’t have his head on straight. We have a crowded backcourt, but we are one injury away from needing CDR to play back there. THIS is a big ten day period for us, from now to the trade deadline, I am hoping we can get some talent in exchange for expiring contracts of players we really don’t want, like Simmons, Boone and Hassell. THE HUMPH was a great pickup and we dumped Najera in the transaction. GOOD WORK on that one. Maybe THORN can work some magic over the next ten days. I HOPE!

Come on Mr. DB. You know that you can’t characterize “Nets fans” one way in general as a whole by taking even a significant number of statements that you may view in a certian way.
I mean, you certainy can do that, but you really shouldn’t. Besides who cares. I know you are not one to tell people what they should think -right? Especially not about something so trivial like basketball. T-Will shouldn’t be pigeon-holed yet as one-dimensional, mostly because he hasn’t even played good defense yet like they expected.
While Lopez is a good shooter (maybe best on this team)and a good young man (meaning no drug or crime issues), and looks like he was raised in a hunky dory environment, he is a bit of a knucklehead. Not terrible, but the whining to the point of almost crying (like a baby) jumping up and down (like a 4-year old), overdoing the dirty looks to his own teamates (no matter how bad they suck) is filed under knucklehead activity to me. Even though, he will hopefully outgrow it and get tougher(unfortunately probably out west when he willingly jets outta here LOL – spoken like a true Nets fan – for over 20 years by the way)

Tyrus Thomas, I’ll pass, get Hump a new long term contract say, 5 years 12mil and have him opt out his player option. TT is more gifted than Hump but Hump has more BB I.Q.

Nets already rejected a Thomas for Yi offer the Bulls made in the offseason.

Haven’t heard of any interest in Yi lately.
Thomas is proving to be a stud this year, but he is complaining if he doesn’t get more than 20 min. PT.
Nets can’t have someone like that, even if his play warrants PT.
Trading Yi for Brandon Bass might be accepted by Orlando.
Not sure who wrote that CDR is a bad guy. Wasn’t me.
