Simmons, Battie Likely To Be Released If No Trade Materializes

Bobby Simmons' value to the Nets rests with his status as an expiring contract, an $11.24 million expiring contract. Same with Tony Battie, who makes $6.61 million. But if the Nets can't deal them by Feb. 18, they're likely to be released so they can join another team. As for Chris Douglas-Roberts, Al Iannazzone confirms that Memphis is among teams that have inquired about him. CDR played college ball in Memphis.

A low first rounder for CDR would be sweet.

“A low first rounder for CDR would be sweet.”
It’d be an absolute joke.
by Andres on Feb 7, 2010 5:41 AM EST reply actions
Btw, Dave D says it’s unlikely we’ll trade CDR.
“He is a minimum-wage player ($736,000), and you’re not likely to get any player of any ability in exchange unless it’s part of a bigger deal – and the Nets cannot make a bigger deal without obliterating their sacred cap space.”
by Andres on Feb 7, 2010 5:42 AM EST reply actions
Supernetfan, another first rounder? How many 20-21 year olds can one team have. We need to package him with an expireing contact for a vetarin leader. A star. This team already has plenty of young players.

Memphis has the Denver and LA Laker picks, currently #27 and #29.
The other issue in this regard which is not discussed: Does Josh Boone exist or has he been moved to another dimension?
by Net Income on Feb 7, 2010 6:25 AM EST reply actions
Denver and LA’s pick are worthless. We already have the Mavs’ pick, which will be much better, and our 2nd rounder will be just 2-4 spots after those picks Memphis has.
And again, Dave says it’s VERY unlikely we’ll move him, because he makes little money and we won’t get anything that good unless he’s used as part of a bigger deal, which we ain’t likely to make since we want make any moves who compromise the 2010 plan. We obviously ain’t moving the kid for such mediocre assets as late 1st rounders.
by Andres on Feb 7, 2010 6:31 AM EST reply actions
Josh Boone? I thought they put him in Swat’s luggage when they released him. They wanted to put half the team in there but Ratner wouldn’t go for the cost from the airline for the extra baggage.

seriously wha happened to boone we should trade him as well y do the nets take so effinlong to make a move some things never change!!!

I bet 8 guys from the Colts can beat the Nets in basketball. Put Peyton at point guard,he’ll have more assists than Devin, and you know he can lead a team. Colts 103- Nets 92. lol.

I feel kinda bad for Bobby because he is not playing. But in reality, when he did play it was not very well. And the guy is making $11 million, so I really don’t feel THAT bad lol.
Interesting Fact: I watched the game on NBA League Pass last night and it was the Pistons feed. When Harris and Hayes went down, they kept showing Rod Thorn. He was standing up and basically yelling. And definitely cursing. I saw the f-bomb dropped like 10 times in 30 seconds. I think he’s just about had it. Amaré, welcome to NJ!
by Alex F on Feb 7, 2010 8:05 AM EST reply actions
@alex f
I think rod was more upset with the refs not stopping the play but i saw that, he was definately VERY pissed lol. I also highly doubt any major trades because they will not trade for a big name with expiring contract like Amare unless they are 100 percent sure that they will resign with Nets and NO ONE will commit to doing so until Proky becomes official owner. So brace yourself for the rest of this season to drag on.
by hova34 on Feb 7, 2010 8:17 AM EST reply actions
Wonder if we will hear what Thorn said to the Nets in the locker?
Regarding Rod’s quote to Del Harris’ agent, he could have been more tactful, unless he didn’t care if Harris walked. Del deserved a raise, although he should have known that he would be doing most of the coaching work.

by Andy on Feb 7, 2010 8:27 AM EST reply actions
The most important take home fact from these stories is that Simmons’ agent confirms that Thorn is trying to move these expirings for something.
Getting Tracy McGrady in a deal where Houston saves a couple of million would be my bet, or else Nets could be a facilitator for a deal. Houston MUST deal McGrady and Nets have the expirings.
Don’t know if the CDR news goes beyond interest from Memphis.
With Hayes likely out for the next 2 games, maybe CDR will get enough PT to show Thorn his value.
Hope Rod isn’t fool enough to trade CDR for less than the Memphis pick (#13 now) or include him in a larger trade that including Yi.
No mention of releasing Boone or Hassell if deal doesn’t materialize. Never know if they will be needed if someone is injured. Nets could always pick up a couple of the best high energy players from the D-League or someone released around the league. Hassell (maybe Boone) could always be brought back for around Vets min, if necessary in August.
by jerry25 on Feb 7, 2010 8:40 AM EST reply actions
Noticed in the Worcester article how it was mentioned that Boston once had an interest in Yi.
Haven’t heard of any story about any interest in Yi lately?
That is a bummer. Supposedly Thorn doesn’t share Kiki’s feelings about Yi. Hopefully Rod is working the phones quietly.
Surely Nets plan to get a PF in off-season, and are likely to want to keep Hump, so where does that leave Yi?
I wonder if there is any truth to discord between Lopez and Hump. If anything Lopez’ numbers have only improved since he came.
by jerry25 on Feb 7, 2010 8:52 AM EST reply actions
T-Mac is not the answer.
And I do actually think we could get value for guys like Hassel, Boone, CDR, Yi, Simmons.
How about: Amare and Almundson for Simmons, Yi, CDR
by Alex F on Feb 7, 2010 8:56 AM EST reply actions
Hump is showing Lopez how to rebound and play with energy and he doesn’t like it.
by Tom F on Feb 7, 2010 9:08 AM EST reply actions
simmons is the best shooter on this team no doubt why are they doing this too him
by amin on Feb 7, 2010 9:41 AM EST reply actions
Because he shot 0- for whatever in nearly every game he played this year. Making him the worst shooter as of this year?
by Shea23 on Feb 7, 2010 9:59 AM EST reply actions
@amin:
If you were watching earlier in year, Simmons just didn’t have it, besides having terrible energy. Partly because Harris and VC weren’t around to feed Simmons his favorite corner shot. With his salary, Simmons would only be a “filler” anyway.
@Tom F:
Thorn needs to talk with Lopez, if he hasn’t already. I wouldn’t want Hump to leave over uncalled for bad feelings.
@Alex F:
As I posted elsewhere, I wouldn’t give up anything for T-Mac. He wouldn’t be expected to be re-signed. He would be told that his only purpose would be get the Nets to 10 wins and fill some seats. Houston may have no choice. TMac screwed himself by quitting on Houston. It might require some approval from Proky, since Houston would have to save some cash to make it worthwhile.
Imagine all these 4th quarter collapses if McGrady was available. If 40% of time McGrady was on fire, they would be Wins. He would be double teamed, freeing up someone else. Meanwhile McGrady would be showcasing himself for next year.
by jerry25 on Feb 7, 2010 10:06 AM EST reply actions
I just hope they get SOMETHING for the eight expiring contracts: Simmons, Battie, Hassell, Hayes, Boone, Dooling ($500K guarantee next year), Douglas Roberts (team option) and Quinn. Quinn can’t be traded unless in a one-for-one…and you can break a trade into two or more pieces to get around that.
by Net Income on Feb 7, 2010 10:15 AM EST reply actions
If we are going to trade for McGrady, we might as well have kept VC because VC makes less money and at this point is a better player.
by Alex F on Feb 7, 2010 10:17 AM EST reply actions
^ which is my reason for not wanting him. Plus, he’s not a player to build a franchise around today. He might have been 6 years ago, but not now.
by Alex F on Feb 7, 2010 10:17 AM EST reply actions
McGrady is owed ZIP after this season. Carter is owed $21 million—$17 million in salary next year and $4 million buyout in 2011-12.
by Net Income on Feb 7, 2010 10:29 AM EST reply actions
Can anyone tell me why Simmons hasnt played since Kiki arrived? What does Kiki have against him? Bobby Simmons was the best 3 point shooter last year on the east I believe.
And why are we going through a 3 rotation with Yi, Hump, Brook? Battie is more of a player than Yi with a broken knee.
by Randy Oreens on Feb 7, 2010 10:47 AM EST reply actions
@Alex F
No one is talking to build a franchise around T-mac it the only reason we could get him is for selling tickets and winning at least 10 games.

What I would like to have the beat writers discuss at this point is the fact that there doesn’t seem to be a single player on this team who makes other players better. The coach also doesn’t make a single player better. It’s as if the team is (a lot) worse than the sum of its parts. The guys we are talking about dumping here are probably still perfectly servicable, but they aren’t stars. We need someone or a system into which they fit. We can dump every single player on the team, but the fact is, they are all decent NBA players but the team stinks. The team will still stink when we replace them with equivalent parts, unless something else dramatic changes. That’s the great hope.

Chris Douglas-Roberts and Courtney Lee for Luc Richard Mbah a Moute and Jodie Meeks with offsetting trade exceptions also works. The Nets would still be two wins worse after the trade, though.

If the Nets win the lottery, they should try to trade Harris and CDR (and some future second round picks and cash if necessary) for OJ Mayo and filler. Memphis would fill their biggest need by getting a real starting pg signed long-term and would get CD-R who is a good cheap prospect who is beloved in Memphis and could help fill in for Mayo. Nets would have a terrific young core of Wall (19), Mayo (22) and Lopez (22 in April)that they could sell to free agents. One can only dream.
by Big Mike on Feb 7, 2010 1:37 PM EST reply actions
@Andres
Nets would be trading garbage to get possible garbarge (McGrady).
No one knows how McGrady would hold up, but since you already think CLee is garbage, he would be taking those minutes. Can’t hurt in the fourth quarter when McGrady could occasionally run off 12 pts in less than 2 minutes!
I would be nice and throw in a future 2nd round pick to rent McGrady and let Proky pay the extra cash, which wouldn’t affect next year. (Houston would have to save face).
Nets would no longer be “laughing stock” which could help attract FA, even if McGrady wouldn’t be around next year.
Why hasn’t some pathetic sports writer thought of this possiblity, so we could then have a formal discussion?
by jerry25 on Feb 7, 2010 2:23 PM EST reply actions
The Nets should trade Yi instead of CDR, CDR has been great off the bench and I really like his way of creating offense.
He’s like a little spark if he can get his attitude in control.
by Seeker on Feb 7, 2010 2:45 PM EST reply actions
Thorn is overrated.
Mistake #1: Thorn overpaid RJ.
Mistake #2: In a desperate salary dump, Thorn/Kiki trade away RJ for expiring assets (Simmons) and garbage (Yi).
Mistake #3: Thorn fails to capitalize on the expiring asset.
Thorn should be shouting those epitaphs last night into the mirror.

@ big mike
i like the idea of aquiring Mayo for sure and i perosnally would be willing to make that trade, but i would replace the filler with someone better. Harris and CDR is a pretty good backcourt and is worth much more then just mayo. they could add thabeet in the trade to back up brook

what Thorn got out of that deal was a 12 million dollar clean up.
the trade with the bucks was a smart trade.

Why don’t they release Boone while they’re at it? I don’t think Boone’s play was that bad where he should be glued to the bench. Especially with Yi out there stinking up the arena.
Trading CDR to Memphis would be a blessing for that kid.

I should become a sportswriter or GM because I came up with the McGrady trade and I have more ideas.
by jj on Feb 7, 2010 4:15 PM EST reply actions
@mr Dollar Bill
Oh really you think Yi is stinking the place yet Boone play isn’t bad. When was the last time Boone was able to score double digit, the last time he was able to create offense by himself. Has he ever got double digit rebound? Has he ever hit 2 free throws in a row? I’m talking about his career. He is a waste of space.
Yet Yi is stinking the place and Boon is not bad at all.
Okay you know what your talking about.
by Seeker on Feb 7, 2010 5:12 PM EST reply actions
@ Seeker
Not that Mr. Dollar Bill needs my defense. But, what he is noting is that Yi has become a negative on the floor. Boone plays a role. Boone contributes within the role he is assigned, whereas Yi hurts the team by missing shots, dropping passes, making ineffective passes, making defensive mistakes, etc. etc. etc. I doubt that Mr. Dollar Bill is looking at Boone as the answer to the PF vacuum.

“I don’t think Boone’s play was that bad where he should be glued to the bench.”
Josh Boone is awful. Most of the team is awful.
Does it really matter if he plays?
No. No it doesn’t.
by TWilliAM on Feb 7, 2010 7:57 PM EST reply actions
Boone may not be offensively polished but he gets the job done. Yi takes away peoples shots and makes the offense stagnint whereas boone is a solid contributer, much like a jared jeffries. Boone helps the nets mroe then he hurts them adn yi does not
by i on Feb 7, 2010 8:13 PM EST reply actions
I agree. Boone is much more valuable than hes being given credit for – yi is much less less valuable than he’s given credit for. Since kiki took over boone has been glued to the bench and i think thats just a stupid move on the part of the nets. At this point i just feel bad for these guys and hope they all get traded or released, cause no one deserves this.
by John Smith on Feb 7, 2010 11:29 PM EST reply actions
If Boone could be counted on nightly to perform his role, he would be playing in spite of his shortcomings. You do not have to worry about effort from Kris Humphries. Like it or not Yi is trying although the results aren’t always good.
by kg on Feb 8, 2010 2:26 AM EST reply actions
I agree with kg. Despite the fact that all the NBA scouts, coaches and management think otherwise,“i” and John Smith aare the few individuals that think Josh is more valuable than Yi. Too bad that you guys don’t own a team.
by Russ on Feb 8, 2010 2:50 AM EST reply actions
First of all, I didn’t say Boone was some kind of stud, nor did I say that he was more talented than Yi. All I know is, with Yi playing that badly there is no reason why Boone shouldn’t be given some minutes at PF for some rebounding and defense. It couldn’t hurt, and frankly Yi’s time needs to be decreased because he’s hurting the team more than he’s helping. His play has been nothing less than putrid.
No need to carry on like you’re crazy, acting like I said that Boone is the answer, because I didn’t.
by Mr. Dollar Bills on Feb 8, 2010 6:43 AM EST reply actions
Boone is at best a 10th/11th man off a normal NBA team’s bench. He still deserves to get some mintutes every now and then with our rotation, but please do not kid yourselves about Boone making much a difference in the outcome of our games. Humphries has proven he deserves those minutes over Boone.
As for Simmons, Battie, Hassell, frankly, the Nets would be lucky to get a bag of sweaty towels back for any of them. None of them would crack an NBA roster any longer. Then again, the Nets were able to find a taker for Najera, so who knows.
Our best bet for a change in chemistry is trading Yi. Fairly or not, the fanbase has lost confidence in Yi, and he does not bring in much if any new revenue from the Chinese population. There is little reason to hold on to Yi as a cornerstone to the organization, and I would hope Thorn keeps an openmind about the possibility of trading Yi. Yi can very well become a solid all around player, but not getting any defense out of the most important defensive position is killing the Nets. Tyrus Thomas can be had for cheap, and the man plays serious defense. Would love to see a swap of the Nets/Bulls trouble parts.

Simmons? He’s washed up – finished. He’s so bad he couldn’t get any minutes on the worst team in NBA history. Maybe someone could use Battie – don’t know don’t care. Boone is a pretty good defensive power forward, could be used in spots.
And while they’re at it they should take a serious look at getting rid of Yi. This guy is a project that never ends. Its all about hand eye coordination, the ability that Allen Iverson, Ray Allen, all the greats were born with. This cannot be taught. Its the thing an NBA player must have. Yi doesn’t have it, and there is nothing he or anyone else can do to give it to him. He will never, ever, be a reliable shooter.
The Jefferson trade was a huge mistake. Move on.
