Are the Mavs interested in Courtney Lee?

The Nets' favorite trading partner the past two years has been the Mavs. Since February 2008, the teams have exchanged 11 players, two draft picks and $3 million in cash. Now, in a Dallas Morning News report on the Mavs' desire to find a swingman, there's this line: "New Jersey doesn't have the marquee assets that Washington or Philadelphia does, but players like Courtney Lee might be easier to extract."

I wouldn’t give up Courtney. I think that on a good team he is a very nice asset. Unless Josh Howard is in this deal, NO WAY!

by Alex F on Feb 7, 2010 9:08 AM EST reply actions

The Mavs just don’t have anything to give at this point.

by J-Kay on Feb 7, 2010 9:16 AM EST reply actions

Alex F There’s like a million players out there better than Courtney Lee… Give me one phase of his game that’s good??? First of all he is severely undersized as an NBA 2 guard.. He cant’s shoot the rock at all, can’t create his own shot, can’t pass, can’t play D at a high level, and has no real game as an NBA 2 guard…

by tvtechwonV on Feb 7, 2010 9:19 AM EST reply actions

Josh Howard, Devin Harris’ best friend, has a contract with a team option for $11,835,000. He is 29 years old and has been plagued by injuries and off court issues. In theory, you could decline to exercise the option and then sign him with Bird Rights if you like what you see and he likes what he sees. Drew Gooden has an expiring contract worth $4.5 million. He’s 28.

I’m with Alex, who is not blind. Lee would play better on a better team, whether in Dallas, Newark or Brooklyn.

by Net Income on Feb 7, 2010 9:23 AM EST reply actions

@tv techwonv If you don’t like nets players why comment on a Nets board. At this point the Mavs won’t give anything worth talking about up. C Lee is a good defender and an inch short then most shooting guards is not “severly” undersized. He can pass fine and will be a better shooter/scorer on a better team.

Yes I firmly believe that Brook Lopez is by far the most skilled big man under the age of 30 and he’s only 21. In my eyes he will be a regular All Star and theres every chance that will be the second best in the game after Dwight.

by Shea23 on Feb 7, 2010 9:30 AM EST reply actions

Lee was measured at 6’4.25" in bare feet on arrival in New Jersey. That means in sneakers, which is how players are generally measured, he’s a little under 6’6". He is not undersized.

Moreover, let’s look at the logic of trading either Howard or Gooden for Lee and Battie or Lee and Hassell. The Nets trade a 24-year-old for a player five years older. Would Howard or Gooden be happy being sent to the Nets for a few months? No. By June, the Nets would have the choice of extending Howard after declining his option or re-signing Gooden. If Howard decided to go elsewhere, the Nets would have given up a good young player for nothing. Would the Nets even want Gooden, who has been traded more times than anyone not named Massenburg? I doubt it. At the same time, if Lee helps the Mavs make the playoffs, which is now uncertain, the Nets would have devalued the Mavs pick. Does that make sense…on any level? No.

If you’re looking for a pick, the Mavs next available first round pick is 2012. Their next available second round pick is 2011. No thanks.

No Howard…he’s a headcase himself.

by NJQuestCat on Feb 7, 2010 10:08 AM EST reply actions

@ Net Income:

Thanks for the support, sir!

But in reality, I would rather have Caron Butler than Josh Howard if someone made me pick either of them. Before any of these rumors start up, I really, really hope they do Yi and Simmons for Amare. Then get Wall. Then get somebody else. PLEASE.

And keep Lee he’ll knock down open threes when JWall, Amare, Brook and whoever else is out there attracting all the defense. Plus: Lee is a way better shooter than CDR.

by Alex F on Feb 7, 2010 10:15 AM EST reply actions

I am not really high on Josh Howard, but I wouldn’t mind Howard for Lee and an expiring contract (Battie, Simmons).

by Andres on Feb 7, 2010 10:20 AM EST reply actions

I like Lee’s defense…he has the quickest feet on the team. but other than that i havent seen much out from him.

I do agree with trading yi…he has some value now….he had more value a couple of week ago because he was averaging close to 17 ppg.

CLee: 3P% 0.298

by Andy on Feb 7, 2010 10:27 AM EST reply actions

I agree that the Mavs don’t really have the pieces we would want. I just find it funny how predictable Mark Cuban’s actions are — Dallas starts to fade in the standings, and, sure enough, Cuban is looking for a trade partner.

Whatever we can do to ensure Dallas loses as many games this year as possible, that’s what we should do. Small victories leading to possible big rewards on draft night :) Is it safe to safe to say Cuban lacks foresight and discipline? He knew he had an old team; at least have the discipline to stand by your guys and hope that playoff experience pays off in April/May. The worst thing to do is to panic — not that it bothers us Nets fans, though!

by Big Tom on Feb 7, 2010 10:29 AM EST reply actions

^^^ If that’s the case we should trade them anybody from our team. They’re all major losers, and their funk is bound to rub off on Mavs players, making them more suseptable to losing.lol.

by t-bone on Feb 7, 2010 10:40 AM EST reply actions

Getting the Mavs pick alone is reason not to try to make them better.

This story concerning CLee is just speculation by a sports writer who didn’t do his homework to realize this.

I think sneakers add 1.25 inches, but Lee doesn’t seem that tall. Keyon is listed at 6’3", but appears taller than Lee, Harris and others in that range. Maybe Dooling didn’t use his sneaker height and also rounded down.

If Nets want to avoid infamy, then renting McGrady without giving up anything (maybe a future 2nd round pick and cash) would be best.

by jerry25 on Feb 7, 2010 10:45 AM EST reply actions

How would trading Lee for Howard make the Mavs any better?

by Andres on Feb 7, 2010 10:49 AM EST reply actions

Lets focus our trade talk to move Yi to a team that wouldn’t rely on him for defense. Yi is not a bad offensive player in a role position. He is signed for 4 million for next year and would bring in Haier money and marketing.

CDR’s availability could get a deal done.
Nets are no longer desperate for the marketing advantages of Yi, now that Proky is coming.

In other news, Hoopsworld is carrying the positive CDR off-the-bench story by DD. Maybe more GM’s will take notice of CDR. He should get more PT if Hayes is out for the next 2 games.

by jerry25 on Feb 7, 2010 10:53 AM EST reply actions

No lee has been playing better lately. One thing I was proud to see go up is the nets FG% behind the 3pt line and this is solely because of Lee and Dooling and occasionally harris when he doesn’t take ill advised shots. I’d rather keep Lee he’s been showing he deserves to stay. Yi on the other hand…

by ZHAS on Feb 7, 2010 10:57 AM EST reply actions

Courtney lee would be very very good player on a team that won’t require him to be the first second or even third option on offense. And as far as his shooting percentage, i think it’s certainly not helped by our opponent’s knowledge that they can leave anyone and not have to worry about them making them pay with a long distance shot. But anyway, trading lee to the mavs is not a good idea. Why would we want to lower our draft pick from them? Besides, not like dallas has any young players to give us

by muwu on Feb 7, 2010 11:37 AM EST reply actions

Lee is a smart player. This team doesn’t have enough of those. I’d prefer to keep him.

by TWilliAM on Feb 7, 2010 11:53 AM EST reply actions

i wouldn’t give up lee for garbage but he is definitely tradeable but the question is who could the mavs give up? i agree with emilio beaubois is intriguing but if the mavs need a swingman why give one up to get one? they would end up where they started. also, lee already proved that at least on a good team he can be good beaubois is a marginal player on a good team.

@ Shea23

Shea23 Says:
@tv techwonv If you don’t like nets players why comment on a Nets board.
-—————————
I am not commenting on Lee. This is just a point in general. LLee is OK. Just like CDR nothing major. If traded for another young “asset” that has as much (basiclaly 0) – whatever. Can’t really get any worse. Lee hates it here anyway.

Shea, so if you are Nets fan (that is a team, an NBA organization) you have to be a fan of all of their players individually too? Particularly players that have “played” to a 4 and 40-something record? That is ridiculous to me.

Personally, I root for the team to win and be successful. I could care less if it happens with the current group, part of the current group, or with an ENTIRELY different group.

All I want is the team to win because that is what excites me as a fan of the Nets NBA team. I don’t get excited by individual players (a.k.a. hero worship or man-love) – if the team is not winning.

If the team is winning – worship and love away bro and I’d join you. For now, you got to call ’em, like you see ‘em. And what we seeing is suckin’ ‘em pretty bad for vast majority. Even the "good" players have a long way to go.

by Rocket Scientist on Feb 7, 2010 12:23 PM EST reply actions

Lee is not going anywhere, like Harris he will thrive with a better supporting cast. One top notch free agent p/f will completely transform this team next year. They will be healthy (finally) and have a better bench as well. The only players who will be Nets next year are DH, BL, CL, Hayes, Twill and Humphries. I’d be really surprised if they gave Yi another chance, it does not look like he will ever be able to guard anyone.

by johnny on Feb 7, 2010 12:25 PM EST reply actions

Trading Lee is just compounding a mistake… we should not have traded for Lee… we needed Anderson more.. but now that he’s here, we should not trade him for these guys. Wait till the summer…

by NetRick on Feb 7, 2010 12:25 PM EST reply actions

Lee is one of the only smart players on this team. Is he a future star, no. But he can be a good piece on a very good team – who always need more defensive minded players who can shoot from the outside.

Brook, Lee, and Twill are the best building blocks this team has right now.

by tom on Feb 7, 2010 12:26 PM EST reply actions

Courtney Lee is not a building block.

by Andres on Feb 7, 2010 12:33 PM EST reply actions

Keep Lee. He will be a good bench player next year.

by JJ on Feb 7, 2010 12:40 PM EST reply actions

Keep Lee, he is finally playing decent ball. He has more upside and Dallas has nothing of value that fits what we are building here. All of their better players are older. We are a rebuilding team, so, why not keep a chip like Lee to build with.

by calling all toasters on Feb 7, 2010 1:49 PM EST reply actions

Do NOT trade Courtney Lee. The guy’s a keeper. Believe me.

by canofan42 on Feb 7, 2010 1:56 PM EST reply actions

From what I can tell Lee skipped the predraft measurements.

This would not surprise me, because anyone that watches the Nets can tell he is undersized.. in both height and weight.

He looks smaller than Jamal Crawford. And if he is 1 inch shorter than most SG’s, yes this is significant. If the average height range of a SG is 6’4"-6’7", you would see there is really about a 3 inch margin, and thus being 1 inch smaller than most is a major difference.

From Dallas, I would be interested in Howard, Beaubois and nothing else.

by Jack Handy on Feb 7, 2010 2:49 PM EST reply actions

I actually like most of the players on the Nets that are currently getting minutes. Problem is, they are all being asked to do more than they are capable of. If this cast were surrounding in their primes Jason Kidd and Kenyon Martin, we may have won a title or two. You need to get a couple of all stars to play with the current group. Hopefully our top pick this year becomes an all star and hopefully we can sign another elite player. I wouldn’t panic trade any of Lee, CDR, TWill, etc. If you are getting back something special you can consider it, but otherwise I would wait it out a while longer.

by Chris2 on Feb 7, 2010 2:49 PM EST reply actions

Lee is vastly overrated by people on this site, but I’m not interested in trading him for Josh Howard. His production has gone into the toilet, and no need to bring any friends of Devin Harris aboard, especially those that smoke pot.

by Mr Dollar Bills on Feb 7, 2010 3:16 PM EST reply actions

lee is mediocre at best and pretty lousy in general. stats don’t lie.

by drmagoo on Feb 7, 2010 3:37 PM EST reply actions

I’d rather still have Ryan here but I’d look at Lee next year after changes are made. I think with better people, coaching included, around him he would improve.

by OPutney on Feb 7, 2010 3:39 PM EST reply actions

I would not mind Lee and Battie for Howard and Gooden, who cares if they are happy.
Howard has a real jumper and Gooden is solod inside.
The Nets could use Howard as a real SF and put CDR at SG.
Howard could be used as an asset to get Lebron in a sign and trade.
The trade deadline will be crazy this year.

by djheavyduty on Feb 7, 2010 3:51 PM EST reply actions

This article is all speculation. Nothing concrete that the Mavs are even thinking about talking to the Nets again.

So, I’d say no, I don’t think the Mavs are interested in Courtney Lee.

by hilario on Feb 7, 2010 4:25 PM EST reply actions

Lee’s stats look pretty good to me . . .

Of the current starters, he has the lowest average of personal fouls; lowest average of turnovers; highest average of steals; and highest average of free throws made.

And his numbers are creeping up . . .

Over the last 10 games, FG% .464; 3P% .355; and FT% 1.000.

by Flipsail on Feb 7, 2010 4:53 PM EST reply actions

Lee is not a building block but I don’t think he should be the first one to get rid of. He has made the deadly mistake of high expectation. Other than shooting more than he should, he is ok. Unless we get a steal, keep him.

by Russ on Feb 7, 2010 5:24 PM EST reply actions

@ Rocket Scientist 0-0 Wasn’t refering to his Lee bashing it seems I imagined him also bashing on Brook. Yeah I thought he just had a dig at Brook and was randomly bashing the nets. Must have confused the post with one I was reading somewhere else

by Shea23 on Feb 7, 2010 5:31 PM EST reply actions

Right Shea….I was just noting my disagreement with you that in order to be a Nets fan you can’t criticize the players. Even Lopez. I just don’t agree with that at all. I think there is more than 1 way to be a fan. Rooting for the team rather than individuals is being more of a fan in my book anyway.

I’m attached to the Nets, not the players currenly on the Nets, even Lopez, who is obviously a good shooter for a C. He has a lot of work to do in improving his toughness, defense (except blocks), and head-game (mental toughness). See I just criticized Lopez – I’m still a Nets fan who wants him to get better. By the way, I just have a feeling that Lopez really wants to play in Texas or further west in Cali – just my opinion.

by Rocket Scientist on Feb 7, 2010 5:56 PM EST reply actions

.408 FG% for a shooting guard is abysmal. especially for a shooting guard. i don’t know about a mavs trade but i’d certainly be looking to move him somewhere

by drmagoo on Feb 7, 2010 7:56 PM EST reply actions

Let me help you…

The Nets have oodles of cap space which they hope they use to sign Lebron James (small forward) and Dwyane Wade (shooting guard)…the two positions that Lee can play.

That does NOT mean Lee isn’t a building block. He is the third lowest paid player on the Nets making $1.2 million, barely ahead of Chris Quinn and Chris Douglas-Roberts. Why would anyone give up on a kid who is paid $1.2 million and has experience as a starter in the NBA Finals.

Oh yeah, he didn’t know what Twitter was a year ago. I like that.

by Net Income on Feb 7, 2010 9:14 PM EST reply actions

Lee is a undersized player, no doubt. Comapring him to Vince Carter, he is like a child who is very skinny and significant smaller.

Vince is not specially bigger, he is only 6-6, who looks very small to LeBron and Melo, too.

So Lee is undersized.

by jarkid on Feb 7, 2010 9:44 PM EST reply actions

What I don’t think Lee could be special because he is so inconsistent on offensive end, his shots can’t keep falling in. He looks lost most of the time.

by jarkid on Feb 7, 2010 9:45 PM EST reply actions

Lee is 6’6" in sneakers… 6’4.25" in bare feet. Quick…how many starting shooting guards in the NBA are taller than 6’6"?

And again, he doesnt have to be “special” to be a building block. The Nets want to sign two players who play the same position as Lee does. Maybe three…Rudy Gay.

Finally, again, he makes $1.2 million, meaning he is well worth the risk.

by Net Income on Feb 7, 2010 9:58 PM EST reply actions

why do people not like lee? He is team oriented, keeps his mouth shut, and performs. Have u noticed that lee has guarded the opponets quickest, biggest threat the last couple of games? he plays D, fits witht he offense and can hit the 3 or attack and is a good passer. lee is a good overall player and would make a great compliment to a superstar player. by a stretch of the imagination, is there a chance this could happen?

wall
Wade
Lebron
ryan anderson
Lopez
Bench: JJ Redick?,CDR?, Lee?, Twill, Brandon bass, Hump, dooling, (or some sort of decent bench?

one can only dream of the possiblities with this team…

by i on Feb 7, 2010 10:19 PM EST reply actions

Moreover to what NI says, Lee can be a Lucious Harris type on a team where a star plays in front of him. His defense and quick feet can help us match up with quicker backcourts since it almost inevitable if we sign a 2 or 3 they will be big.

by kg on Feb 7, 2010 10:40 PM EST reply actions

Get this bum out of here asap

by Juwana Man on Feb 7, 2010 10:41 PM EST reply actions

Lee can become a serviceable roleplayer, but the idea that he is some irreplaceable building block is silly. He plays slightly above average defense and most of the time he can’t make any shots and misses point blank lay ups.

The only person on this team that is a building block is Lopez. Period.

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Feb 8, 2010 6:48 AM EST reply actions

The only tradable assets the mavs have are: Howard, Gooden, and the trade exception that they got from the Nets in the Najera deal. They have no picks to deal for several years.

They can’t deal Gooden unless they get a big back, and to be honest, I have no idea why they would possibly do that, because he knows their system now and is essentially the only backup to Dampier. There’s no way the Nets will trade a young player for just the exception. the exception is worthless to them. That leaves Howard, who makes a ton of money. So the only deal that makes sense is something like Simmons plus CDR/Lee for Howard, and again I have no idea why the Nets would consider something like that. They get absolutely no benefit.
