D'Alessandro: Thorn's Hard Line Sent Harris Packing

Dave D'Alessandro provides new details on Del Harris' departure, confirming that Harris wanted the Nets to promote him to head coach. Kiki Vandeweghe would then return to the front office. When Harris' agent broached the subject, Rod Thorn replied, "He will not be the next head coach here. So if he has any delusions about that, you should let him know it’s not going to happen." Harris then quit.

this team is a mess. Why do we constantly feel the need to shun anyone who actually wants to help?

Fire Ratner.

So where did that locker room immaturity bull come from? No wonder CDR’s upset over “negativity” from Jersey.

by Antoine on Feb 6, 2010 9:24 PM EST reply actions

There’s probably more to this then we care to know. However,Thorn is no dummy.

by Lefty100 on Feb 6, 2010 9:31 PM EST reply actions

I find it better that they keep Harris rather than trade him.

by Tal Barzilai on Feb 6, 2010 9:40 PM EST reply actions

Upon first reading the title of this article, I got extremely excited that we’ve traded Devin Harris. But then I realized he was playing as I read the title. Ughhhh….

by Jim on Feb 6, 2010 9:45 PM EST reply actions

Fire everyone except Tim Walsh.

by Jim on Feb 6, 2010 9:46 PM EST reply actions

Ha, exactly. The other day, for a second there, I thought it was Devon Harris sent packing!

by JohnY on Feb 6, 2010 9:48 PM EST reply actions

Wow, I guess the immaturity in the locker room wasn’t the issue? Or was that just another nail in the coffin?

by PA Net on Feb 6, 2010 10:04 PM EST reply actions

@JohnY
The least you can do when you hate someone is spell his name right.

@Antoine
The story about immaturity went like this: It wasn’t worth putting up with immaturity when he knew he wasn’t getting the jog.

by Net Income on Feb 6, 2010 10:04 PM EST reply actions

Do I care, no. Do I hate Harris, no. Believe it or not. I don’t hate Yi, either. The only 2 I hate is Yormark and Kiki.

by JohnY on Feb 6, 2010 10:09 PM EST reply actions

That is why I said that this so called journalist shoyld have been fired the moment he put that “immaturity” story out there. I mean, he just imagined something, and he put it out as if it was fact.
Also, If it was true that CDR was immature, he would have said what the true reason for Harris’ departure was after the press cornered him on that immaturity thing.

by KJV on Feb 6, 2010 10:17 PM EST reply actions

cdr’s name should have never been mentioned in this story. that is not objective reporting.

i cant wait to see what cdr can do on another team.

thorn isnt playing around in that corner office this year though. he wants to keep this job he has.

by superb on Feb 6, 2010 10:17 PM EST reply actions

At this point, it’s better not to see any players on the Nets leave unless it lands them a star player. I don’t want this to come back and haunt us like the VC trade did. I doubt that any of these fantasy trades will ever happen. Maybe we should just trade Harris to work at Carvel for a Fudgey the Whale Cake, which probably won’t help either. Other players I would consider untouchable at this moment would include Lopez, CDR, Humprhies, and maybe even Yi. Let’s make a mistake that we will regret in the long run.

by Tal Barzilai on Feb 6, 2010 10:30 PM EST reply actions

Good god, in my life, I have never seen a pro team in such termoil, with so much negativity. What a disaster this franchise has become, it’s so pitiful. I almost think the players are being told to lose on purpose. How they’ve been in all of they’re last 6 games or so til the last couple of minutes, then inexplicably, they start playing totally different. They play to lose,it’s so weird and dissapointing. It’s like they stop being competitive at the 3:00 minute mark.

by t-bone on Feb 6, 2010 11:12 PM EST reply actions

If the story is accurate, Thorn didn’t use the best language to Harris’ agent.

Thorn should have said that it would be up to Kiki to step down as coach, in which case Del could be the interim head coach. Instead, it seems like Kiki has no choice but to remain as head coach until Proky picks someone else.

I am surprised too, that there was no mention of Prokhorov, and his future coaching plans, in this private conversation.

I thought something was strange when I heard that Harris took the job for so little money, knowing that he would probably end up doing most of the work. We were never made aware of any notion that Del Harris would ever become head coach. The assumption was that Del didn’t want that aggravation.

Once again, you get what you pay for. Del was underpaid, as is Kiki.
The Ratner era is still in effect.

At least we now know that CDR/TWill weren’t the driving factor for Del’s departure.

by jerry25 on Feb 6, 2010 11:24 PM EST reply actions

@t-bone
MN won 2 in a row, so that is no longer an excuse as Nets have worst record locked up already.

However, Nets are just a player or two short of winning all of these games.

As I have said before, if Nets had DLee in place of Yi, Nets would be 7-0 in these last 7 games.

Even with someone with high energy like Syracuse’s Wesley Johnson playing SF, Nets would be winning these games.

Most of the Nets fans here are just idiots to try to “blow everything up” when they are already at the bottom. Its like selling your stocks after the crash – most people do that anyway.

by jerry25 on Feb 6, 2010 11:32 PM EST reply actions

did he seriously thnk he wuld be head coach ?? Del is a smart smart man…. but sorry i’ll pass….

in terms of Devin Harris…. a lot of hate on him… he deserves some… but not this much… i’m hearing stuff like trading him for nothing….. pure nonsense

by blazin pp face on Feb 6, 2010 11:49 PM EST reply actions

This man truley is delusional if he thought he was getting the head coaching job, way to kick cdr and twill on the way out…

its clear no one was respected him

by Mrbenjamins on Feb 7, 2010 12:02 AM EST reply actions

Harris is certainly qualify for interim coach or at least be consider if he can turn the Nets around. Why not give him a chance, instead saying he will never be hired. Why was Law Frank qualify for head coach.

by Seeker on Feb 7, 2010 12:12 AM EST reply actions

First off, good decision on not considering Del for coaching position,Kiki should be off the list too,He is Office material only,It is time for Thorn to stop being practical, and go get Mark Jackson,He is not a retread, and he can teach Devin, potentially John Wall, and others leadership qualities, and fundamentals that they are sorely lacking,You can’t truly hate on Devin for he is not a leader,or a floor general,it does not seem to be instilled in him as shown by his sloppy play,Jackson can correct this, and get him to rise his play, which will make others better,Yi needs to be traded,He has no strength inside, and is way too clumsy, inconsistent,Humphries is only a backup,Bosh or Amare’have more chops and would be more help for Lopez, get at least one of them, even if you have to trade 4 for1 this is pathetic,Even with Wall,You still have to create chemistry,he would not be a savior,Jackson implementing a winning attitude and play would be the first move in turning things around,But Thorn Will pass on him,and get another burnt out coach who won’t do anything to light a fire under these bumbling bricklayers.. I bet he will select Kiki,Dump Thorn!!!

COLD BLOODED.

by hello on Feb 7, 2010 1:56 AM EST reply actions

Del Harris ran Los Angeles in 90’s and had a great career
Why not hire him?
And if he dies on the job just put in the contract that the nets keep the money.

by Randy Oreens on Feb 7, 2010 2:22 AM EST reply actions

I see this as potentially positive when trying to understand the conversations that went on behind the scene.

-Thorn says Harris will not be coach, thus he knows what type of coach they will have.

-The only way Thorn would know this is if he had some sort of directive from Prokhorov.

-Thorn must know Prokhorov wants to spend big on a well-established coach, (NBA or International), thus there is no way any longer that Harris will be coach.

by Rick B on Feb 7, 2010 2:49 AM EST reply actions

C’mon guys, I thought it was def. TWill and CDR! They drove Harris away!!! A journalist can write anything and an entire fanbase will eat it up. How sad. SUPPORT YOUR TEAM/PLAYERS BEFORE BUYING SOME OF THESE HORRIBLE RUMORS.

by smp369 on Feb 7, 2010 3:29 AM EST reply actions

Yeah, it’s pathetic that they tried to put the blame on two kids like CDR and TWill for Del’s departure, whne he left because he wanted the HC job. What a quitter.

by Andres on Feb 7, 2010 6:14 AM EST reply actions

People that need to go in this organization (in order of importance)

1. Ratner 2. Prokorov (before he gets here) 3. Kiki 4. Yi 5. Devin (provided we can get ANYTHING back for him preferably an actual POINT guard not a guard looking for points) 6 Taft (pay Michelle Beadle whatever it takes to get her back on YES)

by Isaac on Feb 7, 2010 12:23 PM EST reply actions

@ Isaac – I am sorry, but take Prokhorov off this list NOW! WITHOUT HIM, WE HAVE NO MONEY! Rod Thorn should go on this list instead.

by diehardNFFLbarnone on Feb 7, 2010 1:55 PM EST reply actions

at diehard:

I would gladly take him off my list if he planned to keep the team in New Jersey, where it belongs. Prokorov is only on board to potentially make a real estate killing in Brooklyn and maybe have a little fun tooling around with an American professional sports franchise while he is at it.

We know he has billions but we have no clue whether he knows anything about the NBA or its personnel from players to coaches to the front office. That – as as Net Income loves to say is pure “speculation”.

by Isaac on Feb 7, 2010 2:43 PM EST reply actions

@ Isaac – Prokhorov is in it to win it.

by diehardNFFLbarnone on Feb 7, 2010 2:46 PM EST reply actions

I find it absolutely disgraceful that CDR and T-Will were tossed under the bus for Harris’ departure when it was Rod Thorn himself who drove Harris to quit the team.

I knew there was more to it than just that, but of course, you had people trying to say otherwise.

Rod Thorn is batting a thousand this season. He should be fired on the spot right after the draft.
