Mannix: Nets Should Trade Top Pick for Amar'e

Chris Mannix sure has some ideas about what the Nets should do with their top pick in the NBA Draft. Last week, he suggested that if they keep it and don't get John Wall, they could trade it for Ricky Rubio. This week, he writes they shouldn't wait. They should trade the pick to Phoenix for Amar'e Stoudemire, saying it would fulfill Mikhail Prokhorov's desire to make a "big splash" and give the Nets a "cornerstone".

uh, no. lebron james? sure. Stoudamire? no way, amar’e.

I agree with J-Kay. I like Stoudemire, be he doesn’t defend and his knees aren’t great either. So to give up a no. 1 pick to get him, doesn’t sound like a smart move. And that’s an understatement.
by Gerard Himself on Feb 6, 2010 12:27 PM EST reply actions
LOL
What is Mannix smoking? There’s no way we give up on that pick, let alone for a guy who’ll be a FA in few months.
That pick should be our most untouchable asset.

That definitely is and will go on to be the dumbest idea this decade in the NBA and the decade just began.
The Rubio idea is a good one but seriously… what is this guy thinking?!
by JayMS on Feb 6, 2010 12:29 PM EST reply actions
what???? perhaps one of the best college player in th decade for amre? amares best years are behind him and the only person im trading this pick for is lebron, wade, melo, or kobe, and that aint happnin either.
by i on Feb 6, 2010 12:29 PM EST reply actions
Maybe we should trade Brook Lopez for some doughnuts and coffee while we’re at it.
by calling all toasters on Feb 6, 2010 12:33 PM EST reply actions
For once, a great well thought out idea. It makes perfect sense to trade a young star that we would have the rights to on a rookie contract for years, in order to pay a guy the max for 6 years who’s on the decline…someone we could get without giving up anything in a few months.
by gizzymhv on Feb 6, 2010 12:33 PM EST reply actions
we are already the league doormats defensively, why would we trade for another player who doesn’t guard anyone.
by johnny on Feb 6, 2010 12:38 PM EST reply actions
This guy is obviously looking to sabotage the NEW JERSEY NETS’ future!
by JustinNJ on Feb 6, 2010 12:41 PM EST reply actions
Hey, lets trade Brook for Kwame Brown! I think we can get that done as well! Then watch out for next season, our goal would be to win one game.
by JustinNJ on Feb 6, 2010 12:44 PM EST reply actions
How about the #1 protected if it’s the #1 pick, and the unconditional 1 the following year? If we get Wall, Suns get next years pick. If we get the 2nd pick, they can have it.
by supernetsfan on Feb 6, 2010 1:01 PM EST reply actions
what is wrong with these people , dont you understand that the pick holds the key to the nets future
trade players for amare , not the pick that will draft Wall
by BrS 1 on Feb 6, 2010 1:01 PM EST reply actions
I get that Proky wants to make a big splash, but it doesn’t make sense to do something just to make some news headlines.
Honestly, I wouldn’t sign stoudamire as a free agent this summer unless there was a team option on every year and obviously that wouldn’t happen. His knees can give out at any moment.
by JayMS on Feb 6, 2010 1:05 PM EST reply actions
This team has no future in Boone,Yi,CDR,Lee,and Williams
by jj on Feb 6, 2010 1:07 PM EST reply actions
Dont even think about it.
Considering Amar’e s D and knee all I can see is how hes been overrated.
by BogutFan on Feb 6, 2010 1:18 PM EST reply actions
Only if Thorn can pull of one of his classic fleecings!
by johnny on Feb 6, 2010 1:22 PM EST reply actions
@JJ,
come on i can understand nothing in boone or yi but CDR and williams certaniy can be good and lee could be a nice bench player as wll
by i on Feb 6, 2010 1:22 PM EST reply actions
Wall and extra cap space is a betting recruiting tool than amare.
Hey lebron come play with amare? eh, idk
Hey lebron come play with john wall and then bring another max fa buddy with you.
by Kevin on Feb 6, 2010 1:25 PM EST reply actions
I have a better idea, replace Rod Thorn with Isiah Thomas.
by mt57 on Feb 6, 2010 1:28 PM EST reply actions
What kind of value does our pick have if its top 1 protected?
by Kevin on Feb 6, 2010 1:31 PM EST reply actions
Nets should just keep their youth and trade Hassell, Simmons, Dooling and Battie for McGrady, Blalock and Cook Rockets want veterans Nets need to win a least 10 games.
by jj on Feb 6, 2010 1:32 PM EST reply actions
whoever wrote this should be flogged
there are 4 really good players in the top 4
Wall
Turner
Johnson
Favors
Aldridge
Cousins
The Nets could send TWill and a late 1st pick to Minn for Rubio
IF they dont get Wall

You guys are pretending that Amare is like 33 years old and averaging 17 points and 7 rebounds. The guy is not declining at all and he is averaging 21.2 points and 9 rebounds on 55% shooting. How about Yi, Mavs pick, and maybe a future pick. We would then finally get rid of Yi “Butterfingers” Jianlian, but we would also not be giving away much else. BTW, I love that Jarvis Varnado kid, he plays AMAZING defense.
by NET$MAN on Feb 6, 2010 1:55 PM EST reply actions
Please don’t post these articles—-they are nonsensical. It only serves to make fans even more angry.
by brian on Feb 6, 2010 2:00 PM EST reply actions
The fleecings start next weekend. Salary dumps galore. I find it hard to believe the Nets won’t be in the mix.
I also wonder if Thorn has some specific ideas for Mikhail Dmitrievich.
by Net Income on Feb 6, 2010 2:01 PM EST reply actions
If the trade I mentioned were to happen, Devin’s and Brook’s stats would go way up (Devin’s stats would be like last year) because there would be no Yi to take all the shots away from those two, defenses would have to pay way more attention to our frontcourt.
by NET$MAN on Feb 6, 2010 2:05 PM EST reply actions
Geez, that’s so ridiculous. Never happen either, Thorn is not that stupid.
I still think they have a chance to get a decent player coming up next week though, many teams realize they don’t have a chance to compete in the post-season and will try to cash in/out.
by NiceBull on Feb 6, 2010 2:07 PM EST reply actions
@NET$MAN – I would take Stoudemire in the trade you mentioned. However, Stoudemire without Nash will make him a different player. Would be nice to send Yi and a future pick for him, but not give away any top picks this year- no way.
by NiceBull on Feb 6, 2010 2:12 PM EST reply actions
I’m hoping Dallas implodes. They lost to Minnesota at home yesterday so maybe that is a sign they are going to struggle down the stretch. Maybe that pick can turn into a really good rookie…perhaps one of the Kentucky guys, maybe a Patterson or a Bledsoe.
by Chris2 on Feb 6, 2010 2:17 PM EST reply actions
i have a better idea…why don’t the nets trade simmons, battie and hassell for amare and the suns’ 3 1st rd picks? oh, i thought we’re all just saying stupid stuff now like mannix…
by jirohkanzaki on Feb 6, 2010 2:33 PM EST reply actions
the sad part is that he’s getting paid to write that… woww… i mean my 6 yr old nephew knows that would be the stupidist thing ever proposed in the history of the NBA
by blazin pp face on Feb 6, 2010 2:37 PM EST reply actions
Honestly (puts on his flame shield) if we can protect the pick for the #1 and #2 spots I’d do it.
Aside from Turner and Wall who are both obviously untouchable’s there arent any other players Id take over Amare.
Favors just looks like potential (and even if he reaches his full upside he’ll just be another Amare).

No way…..
We had sacrifice too much for a player on the other side of his prime bad knees or not, and lets face it AMARE is not a presence on defense
We need leadership in this team and the perfect player is
GINOBLY out of San Antonio
We have to be smart now, only a few more games and everything is going to come together for this team
1-high draft
2-cap space
3-new arena
4-new owner which is the most important variable in this equation
note: new uniform please enough with the red it remains me of the LA Clippers

the 24 spot in the draft plus we will have the very first draft in the second round

Didn’t read his article or any of these comments but is this guy a total moron? Let’s trade a top pick for an unrestricted free agent who has had microfracture surgery. Maybe we should throw brook in for good measure
by ryan243 on Feb 6, 2010 3:03 PM EST reply actions
The Stoudamire situation is an interesting one for the Nets. They obviously won’t trade their pick for him but come summer he probably will be the only top tier free agent they have a shot to sign.
It appears that the Suns will not extend him at the money he’s looking for but he has a player option for 17 million. If he doesn’t get the contract he wants this summer he’ll just try again in 2011. To get him the Nets will have to give him max or near max money. Since they have a gaping hole at PF and the fact that they have been trying to trade for him leads me to believe that they are willing to give him that kind of contract. They wouldn’t trade for him unless they thought they could sign him long term and they know what he is looking for and about his 17 million dollar option.
He is only 18 months older than Bosh and his career numbers are better than Bosh’s across the board both offensively and defensively. His lack of defense is overplayed. He’s never played on a team that stressed defense and his metrics are better than his teammates that are supposedly complaining about him. His knee surgery was back in 2005 and he has had his best and 3rd best seasons since then so I don’t think his knee should be a concern any longer.
His numbers have gone down a little the last two years under Gentry but he has still averaged 21.5 and 8.5 per 36 min while continuing to be one the most efficient offensive players in the NBA. Four straight years of a true shooting percentage of over 60% and he is now 2nd among active players for his career.
A 27 year old All-Star caliber PF should be of great interest to the Nets if he hits the free agent market this summer. Even if they have to overpay him a little bit.

In a year filled with overwhelming stupidity, this idea ranks #1 by a wide margin.
How do I know? Because even the Devin Harris for Lamar Odom garbage got some positive response here. This isn’t getting any at all.

It makes me laugh how all these foolish Knicks fans want the Nets to give-up their #1 pick.
by Lefty100 on Feb 6, 2010 3:35 PM EST reply actions
Well, the Knicks don’t have their pick, why should the Nets have one?
Darko for Devin Harris. THE NETS NEED CAP SPACE. The Knicks could use a decent point guard. It’s win-win.

What’s the contract situation on Hassell? He’d be a good pick up for a contender.
by Sami on Feb 6, 2010 4:01 PM EST reply actions
@Sami
$4.35 million expiring contract. I am sure that if he doesn’t get traded, the Nets will do him a favor and release him immediately after the trade deadline so he can sign with a contender before the March 1 deadline for playoff rosters.

by Andy on Feb 6, 2010 4:46 PM EST reply actions
@ NI
Is there any actual reason the organization doesn’t want Hassell for the future?
He was playing quite well for us. He is overpaid, but we might be able to sign him for something reasonable.
I mean, when is the last time a team won a championship without ANY veterans?
I don’t know why the team wrote off all the expiring contracts as guys they won’t bring back.
by Paul B on Feb 6, 2010 5:11 PM EST reply actions
I agree that Nets shouldn’t part with Hassell during the season, just to do him a favor.
Maybe someone should first ask Prokhorov if they want to be part of infamy. Hassell could still help win a couple of games in Feb-April.
Nets could bring him back at near Vets Min in August.
If Hassell has significant value to some team, then Thorn should be able to devise some pre-deadline trade that includes him.

keep pick
Trade Simmons, Hassell, Boone, Battie, Quinn, Twill
and i love the boy but as a last resourse…. put CDR in the mix and PHX wont say no!!!!
that and john wall + wade will surely lure lebron

What a god awful idea…Let’s trade a pick that potentially turn into the best PG in basketball for the next 15 years for Amar’e Stoudemire, who’s knees aren’t the greatest, isn’t near the best at his position, and is a free agent after the season. That is just idiotic.
