"Negativity From Jersey" Driving CDR Away

The Chris Douglas-Roberts Saga continues. He's sending mixed messages about his future. If the Nets want him, he's happy to stay. If they don't? "I don't care about it at all, really," he said, adding that wherever he is, "I'm going to give 100% no matter what." His problem, he says, is with the "negativity from Jersey." On the other hand, he gets support from his "Memphis people." That's where he may be headed.

OK, it sounds like it’s adios to CDR. He’s not part of the long term solution for our Nets.
On deck is Mr Boone.

CDR is not alone…there’s alot of Yi haters too…dont feel bad CDR….

by Akara on Feb 6, 2010 1:46 AM EST reply actions

I don’t remember much negativity when the Nets were at the TOP of the standings. Maybe if he’d help his team win more than four games, the fans would be a little more positive.

Or maybe he shouldn’t be so sensitive. The best players in the NBA have a lot more “haters” than CDR does, and I don’t think they care.

by Onion on Feb 6, 2010 1:55 AM EST reply actions

CDR likes to talk. He also likes to talk like a young person who doesn’t always know what they’re talking about. He will just spew out whatever comes in to his mind, and people read too much in to it. It’s like CDR’s public journal entries.

by NiceBull on Feb 6, 2010 2:00 AM EST reply actions

The best thing for CDR is to keep his big mouth shut. Why talk so much when it doesn’t help? Focus on the games and make yourself a better player, Chris!

by Russ on Feb 6, 2010 2:02 AM EST reply actions

Good riddance, he isn’t that good and there is always a reason 40 or so GMs pass on a talented player

by Shawn Carter on Feb 6, 2010 2:24 AM EST reply actions

The sad part is that 90% of the negativity stems from the fact that he has a twitter account, because even when he was playing well he was taking crap from the fans.

CDR is one of the first and few NBA players that actually shares his true thoughts with fans without giving canned answers or being PC. It’s an admirable quality because on one hand, hey the kid is a human young man who speaks his mind, I prefer to see realism. The problem is that fans are not used to this from a professional athlete. The fact that his play took a nosedive recently has just compounded the problem and gives his detractors fuel to torch him. A trade at this point will be better for both sides.

I just find it funny though, that when CDR is candid, he gets ripped. When Devin Harris was candid last season about how Lawrence Frank hounded him daily about playing defense and you can see that he didn’t give a damn nor did he attempt to listen to the coach, no one says anything and you have a few people who defend Harris to no end on here.

CDR isn’t the only one getting dumped on…Yi, even though I think he stinks now because like CDR, he lost his aggressiveness, was getting torched even when he was playing well, like CDR. Heck, you have T-Will stepping his game up and Nets fans still have bad things to say. So maybe he has a point with the negativity coming from Jersey fans. You have people here bashing our franchise center, calling him “Slo-pez” and all kinds of junk. It is what it is.

But not playing hard is inexcusable. I was disappointed to see Chris dogging it out there because from day 1 he was the guy that left everything on the floor and he let everything get to him. It’s a shame it’s come to this because there is value in an unorthodox scoring 6th man and because of his mouth, poor attitude, and fans who want to blame everything on him and give guys like Harris and Lee a pass, he’ll be gone. Oh well.

lmao like I always said nets fans are the worst. It’s like nets fans don’t like none of their best players calling brook slopez cdr should should be traded etc. It’s just plain comical I never seen anything like this.

by 1milord on Feb 6, 2010 6:06 AM EST reply actions

It would be idiodic (can’t say retarded anymore) to trade CDR without getting something significant back, like the Memphis pick, which is currently #13. Thorn can afford to “wait it out” because no trade at all would not be a bad thing. CDR could be a valuable piece on draft day, because of his low salary and potential to be the “6th man” on any team.

From CDR’s remarks, do I get the feeling he follows NetsDaily? I am unaware of anyone from the Nets organization who has admitted to this?

If you’re reading this CDR, just shut down your Twitter account, for your own good, and work like the devil on your outside shooting, because eventually you should be a 2-guard in the NBA.

CDR, you have been fortunate to be getting a chance to get significant PT in Jersey. You will probably have a chance to get more PT for the remainder of the year than anywhere else. Memphis isn’t going to make the playoffs, even with you. At least with the Nets, people don’t expect wins, just to play hard and get ready for next year.

The fans that do the “hating” are stupid. The rest of us who criticize are just trying to think what is best for the team, for the future.

by jerry25 on Feb 6, 2010 6:17 AM EST reply actions

This guy wants to win. Period. He knows what it takes to win. He’s vocal and plays a good game. CDR was captain at Memphis and leading scorer.
CDR shot 54% for his college career. He was an all american in college. Noone else on the Nets can say all that.
CDR earned his starting spot can CLee say that? Can Yi?
CDR was groomed as a PG last year now playing SF?
Think about that! He’s never played his natural position SG on this team and hasn’t complained about it.
He doesn’t like losing.
He’s a target because of his Twitter account. He’s open and candid about everything. How many times has Lee or Yi been in the post game interview? 3 or 4 times? How many wins? 4 what a coincidence!

by djheavyduty on Feb 6, 2010 6:53 AM EST reply actions

CDR should have canceled his twitter account a long time ago. The thing about twitter is that not only does he tweet what HE thinks but people are able to tweet to him what THEY think. It’s bad enough that you here it from the media, but to open your twitter account everyday and read things like “YOU Suck” or even worse. He may have fed off the negativity early on, but people are mean and will say anything. All you have to do is read some of the comments on this site to know how insensitive people are. It’s like opening up your own personal hate mail every day. Most Pro athletes would never open themselves up so much.

by supreme on Feb 6, 2010 7:02 AM EST reply actions

The Nets have 4 wins and we’re in February, on pace for the worst record ever. Meanwhile, the fanbase is in a bit of disarray right now regardless of the team’s record and probably won’t be resettled until the geography of this team over the next 3-4 seasons looks a little more definitive. If these guys are going to get so sensitive about a couple of nitwits “Tweeting” about trading some of these guys using a social media tool, it explains a lot about why this team stinks, despite the talent on the roster. Maybe to use CDR’s own words against him, he just has no heart if he worries so much about what people say about him.

by Mark Ginocchio on Feb 6, 2010 7:14 AM EST reply actions

Nothing wrong with CDR’s Twitter account, free country… free speech. Only thing wrong here is a really inexperienced old coach and older GM that doesn’t understand or relate to the world wide communications revolution. CRD could no more “close” is twitter account, than any other kid is age.

by NetRick on Feb 6, 2010 7:36 AM EST reply actions

His tweets are a reflection of his personality, for good or for ill.

by Net Income on Feb 6, 2010 7:38 AM EST reply actions

I just read in my local newspaper how people are getting laid off or suspended for writing negative remarks about their job/employer on their Facebook page.

Regarding 4 win Nets; I can easily see Nets winning something like 5/10 if they had a new coach, to give the players new motivation.
However, 3rd week in March is earliest I can see that happening, with the delay in Proky taking control. Prokhorov would be a hero if Nets win 10 games this year.

by jerry25 on Feb 6, 2010 7:45 AM EST reply actions

The negatitivity directed towards CDR isn’t going help him do any better. It’s almost no different from the boos he hears from fans who only care about you when your team is doing good. He shouldn’t be blamed a lot just because the team is doing bad, because all the players should share the blame especially those who don’t tend to step up more. I would rather people on his Twitter account give him some constructive criticism rather than destructive. On a sidenote, I don’t use any of these community websites be it Twitter, Facebook, or even Myspace, because of imposters and others having such big egos of themselves.

by Tal Barzilai on Feb 6, 2010 7:49 AM EST reply actions

Can we please stop acting like CDR is Kobe Brynt and get over this stuff. He’s a second year player in his first year of playing significant minutes. So he tweets too much. Who cares? Lets get off his back he’s not the reason the team is 4- forty whatever. The buck starts and stop with the FO in that regard.

by Shea23 on Feb 6, 2010 8:10 AM EST reply actions

I still like the guy. I think if we do trade him, we’ll regret it. Him and Twill are diamonds in the rough. Stay the course, so what if we set the loss record. Nine wins, ten wins, who cares it still sucks. But next year…

Lopez went ballistic on Hump. Is that a sign of an alpha stud in the making or a temper tantrum?

by JD down the shore on Feb 6, 2010 8:23 AM EST reply actions

any reason the most efficient plyer of the nite (cdr) only played 11 min? kiki is biased against cdr. he was the same way with twill until thorn forced his hand.

Lopez’ reaction was his usual spontaneous reaction, just like he was still on the playground. If it was the losing basket at the buzzer, then it would have been a big deal (would have made the #1 highlight).

Brook eventually will realize that it does No Good and it looks bad on camera. The birthday boy Humphries is one of our seasoned veterans.

Happy 25th birthday, Kris Humphries, born Feb 6, 1985 (and that should be verifiable.)

by jerry25 on Feb 6, 2010 8:38 AM EST reply actions

Well said Russ. He just needs to shut up, play when his number is called and needs to realize he is a second year player who was passed on by 39 teams. Maybe there was a reason.

by Peter on Feb 6, 2010 9:01 AM EST reply actions

DJHeavy,

C’mon now…..being a good college player does not translate to NBA success. Lots of our players were great college players and were on winning college teams, (i.e. Stanford, UCONN, etc.), so don’t make CDR out to be anything better than he is. There was a reason he lasted till the 2nd round! He has ADD and a need to be liked, which are keys to disaster in the NBA. He seems to think he has accomplished lots in the NBA thus far and all that he has accomplished is that he is creating a reputation that he is a problem child, one definitely not worth the production he brings to the court.

I can’t recall many 2nd Year players who have drawn this much attention on their teams. It’s sad, as most other teams would have veterans who could and would put him in his place. (Like Garnett with Big Baby).

by Adam on Feb 6, 2010 9:11 AM EST reply actions

lol, CDR can not be the "6th man" on any team. Not even 7th, 8th… time will prove.

by Cajun on Feb 6, 2010 9:12 AM EST reply actions

Trouble with the Nets is from the top on down. For all of you nay sayers regarding CDR, take a look at what Thorn has done to this group of players. CDR played for championship teams in the past and now he is on the good ship Titanic! Why don’t you fans support him!! He only wants what we want and that is a competitive winning team. This team sucks

by GSHOCK on Feb 6, 2010 9:25 AM EST reply actions

Please CDR. Just shut up.

by PA Net on Feb 6, 2010 9:26 AM EST reply actions

Seriously, between NetsDaily and our site on TrueHoop, I feel we get a good representation of fans who leave comments and I always get the sense that the fan base is very protective of CDR. They sympathize with him, and like the fact that the losing bothers him so much. So where’s all this negativity? Because he freaks out when ND calls him a “twittering fool” in reference to a POSITIVE article written about in the Boston papers, or because he freaks out after our site commented on a Dave D. story that indicated CDR was purposely taking himself out of the game to “prove” to his teammates? Give me a break… this guy has massive personality issues which create a “Me vs. the world” mentality. If and when he gets traded, he’s going to find the same stuff in Memphis, Phoenix, LA, wherever. If he doesn’t start getting over this stuff, he’s not going to last in this league and it has nothing to do with his abilities as a player, which is just stupid.

by Mark Ginocchio on Feb 6, 2010 9:26 AM EST reply actions

I don’t care what CDR tweets. If you don’t look at it, it won’t annoy you. Wait until we have a real team and a real coach next year and I bet CDR is one of the better reserves in basketball. You need to be brash to a certain degree to have the stones to perform in pressure situations, and I think when we actually do get to play meaningful games, CDR will rise to the forefront. He showed it late last year and he showed it earlier this season before the team had completely jumped the tracks. Don’t trade CDR.

by Chris2 on Feb 6, 2010 9:32 AM EST reply actions

This is all really dumb. I’d welcome him gone so that I would not have to read about this drama any more. As long as they get another "young" "kid" with "potential" – I don’t see what the difference is between the "assets". Particularly if whoever they can get has a better attitude that isn’t centered on making himself the center of attention for BS like twitter drama.

People say “he speaks his mind”. I say he speaks without thinking. People in the public eye have to think about what they communicate. It actually yields $$$$ and respect when you do it right. Examples are everywhere.

These twitter pages are mostly narcissistic tributes to one’s ego. He says he loves “his Memphis people”. Try some humble pie – he just can’t take blows to his ego. Spoiled college kid having trouble adjusting to being a dime a dozen. You know how I know that? Because he is talking and letting everybody know it. Zip it.

The fact that he takes negative comments on twitter and calls that “negativity from Jersey” is extremely ignorant and something that he should not broadcast showing his bruised sensitive ego. Not very professional. Twitter pages are designed for over the top statements – both ways. It’s basketball, it’s mostly young payers and young fans, in 2010. Not that much “thinking” going on. Just bold and brash ego drama. And everybody gets to hear about it. Yippee!

by Rocket Scientist on Feb 6, 2010 9:55 AM EST reply actions

He is not giving his 100% on the court, period. He sounds like he’s the only person who cares about winning in this pathetic team, but on the court he just doesn’t show the same since January.

by K on Feb 6, 2010 10:16 AM EST reply actions

Let’s face it we are all frustrated and angry. If you’re a real fan and relate success to winning it’s not unusual to hear this type of verbage. Even in our worse days we have never lost like this. I just keep believeing it’s darkest before the dawn. Unfortunately even as a season ticket holder we are stuck helplessly in this mess of a season

by BigEd on Feb 6, 2010 10:19 AM EST reply actions

@ K

I believe CDR is fighting his way back from a January shooting slump. Recent games, you can see that his production is returning to normal. Examples:

Feb 3 v. Toronto, 8 pts, 5 rebs, 2 asts in 15 mins
Feb 5 v. Boston, 9 pts, 3 rebs, in 10 mins (actually CDR had those stats in the first 3 mins he played!)

I think if CDR played more mins, we would see the double-digit scoring we expect from him.

by Jeff on Feb 6, 2010 10:37 AM EST reply actions

@Mark really good point. If he got twitter because he only wanted to talk to his fans on twitter he was very misguded. Of course he was going to get “haters” on twitters.

Too Bad…Lots of talent…Zero professionalism……He should love the Nets…We picked him after 40 passes…What happened to that Chip on his Shoulder against all of the NBA teams….Now it’s against the nets and then it will be against the next team that gets him….With the correct attitude this guy can be a 25 point starter……Oh well….

by NetFan48 on Feb 6, 2010 10:44 AM EST reply actions

I would be very cautious about this type of player. A player who can’t think positively can’t help the team’s chemistry by any means. And yes, I’m one of those people who think chemistry is very important to a team. Therefore, if the right deal, note that I said right deal, comes along, I’m willing to trade him. If not, keep him and re-evaluate in the offseason if he fits in next season’s plans.

by Jason on Feb 6, 2010 10:56 AM EST reply actions

There should be a fine for a player talking about his team like this. Ive never seen a non quality player talk so badly of his team and the fans.

by Randy Oreens on Feb 6, 2010 11:16 AM EST reply actions

The New York media market is unlike anything else he has experienced. Same with TWill. It ain’t Memphis or Louisville where the college basketball team is the center of the local scene. You have to be aware of and wary of the media attention…and how it can affect you. TWill seems to have a better understanding of this, maybe a better agent.

In any event, I believe he wants out of New Jersey. And when players want out of New Jersey, they usually get their wish.

He is destroying this team one game at a time. I seriously never believed I thought I would never say this, but I miss Frank. Sure he made dumb mistakes, but he had CDR playing great. Seriously, anything is better than Kiki. HEY ROD… WHY GIVE A COACHING JOB TO A PERSON WHO DOESN’T KNOW HOW TO COACH???? CDR is a player that was going to be in our long term plan, now he looks like he might be out of here before feb. 18th. GOOD JOB KIKI!!!!!

Trade him for a low first rounder in a heartbeat! If Dallas continues to be a mediocre team down the stretch, and their age seems to be catching up to their legs as late, it is very possible they can fall into the lottery. Not that we would get Wall with the 13th or 14th pick, but certainly having say, our pick, a mid first rounder, plus a low first rounder and the 1stpick in the 2nd draft is extremely enticing.

We literally get two Wall, or Minnesota gets Wall, we have the trade assets to nab Flynn or rubio….they would do that for the two pick for sure….plus we could package DH/Yi for Jefferson. This makes tremendous sense for both teams. Speculation is always fun

Rubio/Dooling
Lee/Twill
Lopez/2nd Rounder
Jefferson/Humphries
Free Agent/Gay?/Dallas Pick

now we’re talking!

Kiki is the first guy I want gone, even before Yi.

Why do these guys think we are such bad fans? They have 4, let me repeat 4 wins! If they had 34 wins we would be loving them and the arena would be close to full for most games. When you are in the running for the worst record in NBA history, fans will not be coming out to support the team! Why would we, if you know every game is a loss? They have been playing well the last two weeks, so maybe they can will themselves to a couple of wins here, but, don’t bash the fans when it is the performance on the court that should continue to get criticized. Even most of the holy Knicks fans stopped supporting their team the last ten years after the mess they put on the floor to watch. CDR was apart of a winning Memphis team in college, ofcourse, the fans were ecstatic for that winning program! They went to a National Championship. CDR would think differently about us if he was here during our long playoff runs. We might not have sold out during the regular season, but, throughout the playoffs and Finals, the IZOD Center was rocking! I went to every playoff game.

They are all ganging on him. There are no good perimeter shooters that provide spacing. And he is not a good perimeter shooter himself. He should be patient and wait for cavalry next year. Rockets haven’t been willing to trade McGrady just for “no good” expirings. They want something like a #1 draft pick or a good young like CDR. They won’t get their wish.

McGrady could be a problem for a team, because he would demand a high salary to re-sign his fragile body.

I knew immediately that McGrady made a terrible mistake to “quit” on the Rockets. We don’t even know if his body could “hold up”. Besides, the contending teams don’t have over 18 – 22 million in expirings.

The Nets should pay attention, because they could facilitate a contending team wishing to get McGrady, or they could outright get him, so that Houston saves some salary.

Prokhorov could get McGrady with the intent to only make the team more exciting and avoid infamy. ESPN would even carry McGrady games as people would be rooting for and against breaking the record.

Between Simmons, Battie, Hassel and Boone, three out of the four could be arranged to save Houston $.
Then Nets could bring up a player or two from D-League to give Nets some energy.

Definitely worth a Blog from NI on a slow winter-storm day.

ayo this msg is for CDR, keep doin what your doin i recognize your skills and know that if you had more playing time it wouldnt hurt I LOVE the fact that you speak your mind and dont sugar coat anything. I would really like for you to stay in jersey and continue to help us, but if for some odd reason you get traded im sure your gonna make us regret it …. on another note Brook has some real on court issues his body language and attitude is really starting to piss me off example the game against the celtics when him and humphries knocked the ball in the opponets hoop he got mad and pouted “Goddamnit” and for a sec looked like he wanted to cry… brook stop whining and just play ball you say you want to model your’ game after TIM DUNCAN half the antics that you pull on the court TD would never do.. It seems like everytime something happens that you dont like you cry but when things are going your way your cool THAT NEEDS TO STOP! just shut up and play ball. only reason your stats are decent this year is because kiki keeps telling everybody to feed you the ball! if kiki feeds the ball to cdr as much as he does to you then maybe cdr wouldnt be in this position right now. but the front office has to justify that they made a good pick by constantly feeding you (and yi) the ball to prove your a good centerpiece to build around. its BS if you ask me star players are born not made… you take too long to make a move when you get the ball and you dont protect the ball all that well! smaller defenders are constantly doubling down on you and stealing the ball from you .. oh yeah big baby bullied you a couple times on “d” last night!!!

@jerry25 McGrady knows he wont get a max contract after this season he will have to settle for the MED just like Iverson.

Another trade could be Battie, Hassell, and Simmons for Hughes and Millicic from the Knick. Hughes is was Lebron’s “Robin” and good friend in the finals and Nets could resign him for MED and lure Lebron.

RJ and VC were traded w/o any demand. RJ was upset about being shipped out… The fans did not turn them away.

Cdr’s just a guy who can’t take criticism. Please, tell me one instance which did not laugh at or get annoyed about criticism. He’s got serious personality issues and is probably partly compensating for it by his bragging about women proposing to him all the time. And i remember another tweet earlier in the year about him bragging about another 20 point night for him. He also brags about going to the gym all the time. And about being rich. And about being handsome. If you tell me cdr does not have some serious self image issues you are quite deluded. Please feel free to peruse his twitter account

@ Net Income – The Grizzlies are actually doing fairly well compared to recent years, so I’m not sure what exactly you’re trying to say.
