Prokhorov Approval After Vancouver Olympics?

Mikhail Prokhorov is now likely to be approved as Nets owner in March. Yahoo! reports approval will come "after his work with the Russian Olympic team is finished at the Vancouver Games". Prokhorov heads the Russian Biathlon Federation whose team is competing in Vancouver. Biathlon runs Feb. 13-26. Prokhorov is expected to meet with Rod Thorn and Brett Yormark at All-Star Weekend in Dallas, Feb. 12-14.

“meet with Rod Thorn and Brett Yormark at the All-Star Weekend in Dallas, Dec. 12-14.” get yer dates right, buddy.
by JohnY on Feb 4, 2010 11:14 AM EST reply actions
All these different dates are killing me. What is the truth and how does this effect our trading deadline status. And I’m worried bout that immaturity article about cdr and twill. Sigh, so much for upperclassmen in the draft. Ya the dates are a bit skewed but they should fix themselves.

he needs to be in place before the trade deadline or we’ll be screwed.

Well, i had planned on using a six letter word ending in “-ed” and beginning with “f” but this is a family oriented forum. More screwed sounds about right

I think (but don’t know) that Prokhorov may have a larger role than the Biathlon. The next Winter Olympics are in Sochi, Russia.

I think Prokhorov may not want to be approved till the end of this season. I don’t think he wants to be part of this failure but at the same time doesn’t want to touch cap space to improve this season. He also knows that our draft position is going to change if he improves the team just for the sake of it. He also knows that fans would want instant improvement once he takes over and he doesn’t want to jeopardize above mention just to appease fans. So what is the best solution:
Not to own the team till the end of the season and make a splash by hiring a high profile coach soon after the season ends then go from there.
Anybody buying my theory :)

He is going to look like a sports genius this time next year. There literally is no where to go but WAY up.

how do you travel with that cart in front of your horse?
by Trenton on Feb 4, 2010 12:20 PM EST reply actions
I didn’t say he was going to be a genius, but the media will certainly view him as one.
Are you trying to say that we will be the same this time next year? Its pretty much a guarantee that we will be much better. Even having 20 wins next year is MUCH better.

I suggest everyone go back and read this…

people should also understand that his TOTAL commitment to the Nets is FAR beyond the $200 million. He is assuming $175 million in debt, eating up to $60 million in debt while the team is in Jersey and buying $100 million in junk bonds for arena infrastructure.
You dont invest that kind of money in a HORRIBLE franchise without wanting to win.

I’m a long-time reader, first-time poster. Sorry if this isn’t the place to post trade ideas. Please let me know where might be better. Thanks!
RealGM Trade Checker makes a lot of trades for Igoudala possible, but basically it just requires sending Bobby Simmons. But since that’s so unequal in value, you have to throw in some others to make the “Change in Team Outlook” a little more reasonable. So…
New Jersey sends:
Bobby Simmons
Josh Boone…or even Yi Jianlian works, incredibly, if wee need to make the scoring more equal
Chris Douglas-Roberts
Philadelphia sends:
Andre Igoudala
Marreese Speights (muscle at the 4)
Jrue Holiday or Primoz Brezec
Or with Chicago…
Here’s a trade that works out per RealGM Trade Checker, and the “Change in Team Outlook” only favors the Nets by +1.8 ppg, +3.7 rpg, and +1.2 apg. I’m not sure why Chicago would do it, but I’d love to see it happen.
New Jersey sends:
Bobby Simmons
Josh Boone
Chris Douglas-Roberts
Chicago sends:
Joakim Noah
John Salmons
Jerome James
It brings in an energy 4 or 5 in Noah (who I’m pretty sure would want to stay here as well…met him once at a wedding, sooo…), an aggressive scorer in Salmons…and James just makes the trade work per RealGM.
And it ships out dead weight and mediocrities from the Nets.
Either trade doesn’t bring in franchise changers, but they’re parts that could make the team more appealing next year to a big free agent, although James or Wade might not come here anyway.
So…? Even if you hate it, thanks for any responses.

By FEB, 19th or sooner we might find out if Proky is in it to win it, or if he is sitting it out until the seasons over.
I would think if he sees something he wants, he will go after it, “official” owner or not.

“he needs to be in place before the trade deadline or we’ll be screwed.”
@Dollar Bills
I don’t see why, unless you think that Thorn would have the ability to pull off some great deadline deal that is better than what we could do in the summer. I personally don’t believe that he can.
Personally, at this point, I would rather not do anything at the trade deadline. Instead, I would prefer to take our lumps this season – i.e., breaking Philly’s record – and then let’s see if we get Wall in the lottery, which makes our path a lot more flexible (esp. in re trading Devin Harris).

A.S.,
I think Net Income said that The Russian must be in place officially in order for us to spend any money or make any trades?
NI care to clarify?
by Mr. Dollar Bills on Feb 4, 2010 1:35 PM EST reply actions
@A.S.;
Hoping to get “lucky” in the lottery is not usually a good idea when planning your future success. If you have the chance to make a major move now, in improving the team, you do it.
by Mike on Feb 4, 2010 1:38 PM EST reply actions
I guess I just don’t see us doing a major move at the deadline. Especially in regard to one of the major free agents – Amare, Bosh, etc – you would have to have assurances he will re-sign in the summer, and I don’t think any of those guys will give those assurances.
by A.S. on Feb 4, 2010 1:42 PM EST reply actions
What is David Stern and the NBA going to do? Tell Proky and the Nets they can’t make a major move in improving the team until Proky is “official”. LMAO… Stern wants Proky and his billions and will let the Nets do what they please. There is more then one way to skin a cat….
by Mike on Feb 4, 2010 1:43 PM EST reply actions
What Nets officials (including I think Thorn) have said is that the Nets must “inform” Prokhorov of planned moves. I assume Yormark must do the same on non-basketball issues.
The last series of moves was basically a wash, with the Nets committing to a little more money this year but saving a little as well on the end of Najera’s contract. If Humphries opts out of his contract, they could save more. (Not saying he will, but the combination of his improved numbers, relatively low salary, and the looming 2011 lockout, etc., might want to opt out. He could resign with the Nets or not.) So it wasnt a big deal.
But, if a deal required a major expenditure of money by the Nets this year, that money has to come from Forest City…until Prokhorov is approved officially. Are they going to go along? I don’t know.

Here’s Hollinger with a good article on the Nets disaster this year: http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/insider/columns/story?columnist=hollinger_john&page=PERDiem-100204
Personally, if I were Prokhorov, I would completely clean house after the deal closes. Thorn, Kiki, Yorkmark, everybody.

NBATV announced the meeting of Prokhorov at the All Star game with the assumption that he would be approved by the NBA at the All Star game.
NBATV would not have made that announcement unless some official with the NBA knew of a planned meeting of the Board (owners) to approve of him. Noone from the NBA could guarantee that he would be approved (23/30 votes), hence the vague wording.
I have to assume therefore, that 1. either something has changed or 2. the story of approval by the NBA in March is false. Perhaps it should be that Prokhorov wouldn’t officially take over as owner until March, when he would have more time to commit to the team. The reporters have been very “loose” and inaccurate in the past on these details.
Besides, even if the NBA approved of him, he wouldn’t become the Majority Owner until after signing some more papers which wouldn’t happen until after the Condemnation of Ground Zero is finalized.
So, maybe he will be approved by the owners, afterall, but he wouldn’t take control until a later time.
I predict this story isn’t accurate and we will be hearing clarification in the next week.

I also disagree with statements that the recent 3 or 4 executive personnel decisions regarding the Nets players could be considered a “wash” and therefore Prokhorov didn’t need to be involved. The 3-4 deals occurred at different times, without knowing the end result ahead of time.
In particular the buying out of S. Williams (more so that SWat), took on significant salary and added to the Nets Salary cap for this year.
Obviously Ratner approved of the trades and buyouts and Prokhorov was informed.
I don’t see why another similar move couldn’t occur by Feb. 18, especially since Prokhorov will be “at the table” with Rod Thorn 4 days prior?
Certainly a major deal like agreeing to terms with Amare is unlikely, but a Nets Insider already Nixed the desire to do that deal anyway.
by jerry25 on Feb 4, 2010 4:24 PM EST reply actions
Also, never heard an explanation as to how the NBA gets 30 “bigshot” executive owners together in one place to have a vote. Is it done via remote conferencing?
The All Star game still seems like the likely location to discuss final approval by the NBA, even if Proky doesn’t assume Ownership at that time.

@NetsJetsFan
Feel free to post any good trade ideas.
Nets fans like to complain instead of proposing realistic trade ideas.
What we need now is some “leak” about Thorn trying to move CDR and/or Yi and then the posters might get more motivated.
The Humphries trade wasn’t suspected too much ahead of time, so a surprise could be coming that people haven’t thought of.
The likely trades wouldn’t add much to next year’s salary cap. Trading CDR+Yi would save almost 5 million, so that could bring back a decent player.
Some 3 team trades at the deadline are likely, and the Nets have pieces (expirings) to help make those trades work.
The question remains as to whether Thorn would be permitted to use any future draft picks in any of these trades – as that is the surest way to make the team better and avoid Infamy.
by jerry25 on Feb 4, 2010 5:55 PM EST reply actions
@jerry25
Thanks. I didn’t have the terms of the contracts (where are those easy to find?), so I don’t know whether my trade ideas included any extra incentive in terms of expiring deals.
Mostly, I was surprised at how big Simmons’ contract is and how per RealGM you can actually meet the CBA restrictions even while dealing him straight up for Igoudala or Stoudemire. But those teams wouldn’t really want to do that, so I tried to sweeten the deals (didn’t post the Stoudemire one) with CDR and Boone, who I think are mediocre and unhappy here.
And I think Chicago might be willing to mix things up there, and I think Noah and Salmons are worthwhile pieces.
I just think the Nets need to show 2010 free agents that there’ll be some pieces other than Lopez and Harris to build around.
by NetsJetsFan on Feb 4, 2010 7:06 PM EST reply actions
@jerry25
Sorry, I forgot for Stoudemire you have to add Boone.
No problem!
But yeah, contract length and resignability are big considerations.
by NetsJetsFan on Feb 4, 2010 7:28 PM EST reply actions
@NetsJetsFan:
Try to figure out a way to get Marcus Camby and lose Yi, even if using 3 teams.
That would ensure Nets got at least 6 more wins and would attract a FA who wants to win right away.
Actually there really won’t be many good free agents to attract IMO. DLee is who I want, but I am skeptical that Knicks won’t try hard to keep him. Rudy Gay is also worth considering, but then that would prevent Nets from getting LeBron in 2011, when he may be interested.

An article published in hundreds of newspapers around the world yesterday and today told of Bruce Ratner closing a Family Homeless Shelter, on Martin Luther King’s birthday, Jan. 15, and in the middle of winter. Today a letter was sent by community groups FUREE, Picture the Homeless, and others to Nets Co-Owner Jay-Z, who, unlike Bruce Ratner, is known for his generousity and big heart. It’s no big deal to the Barclays Stadium project to keep the shelter open through the Winter. Every day in New York more families and more children become homeless This shelter, the Pacific Dean Family Homeless shelter can house up to 80 families. There is a shortage of such facilities. And it’s cold out. Nets fans, you also have big hearts. Can you help persuade the owners that they can put the parking lot they hope to replace the shelter with, somewhere else. Just till Spring.
Atlantic Yards may happen or it may not happen. That is in the hands of a Judge at the moment, who is looking over the case for Eminent Domain at the request of the Nets owners. This is not about that. This is about keeping the shelter open. And it’s about undoing the damage done by closing a shelter that serves primarily African-American and Caribbean-American families down on their luck. Will you please lend your voices to helping out some folks who need to come to a shelter and be let in, instead of being locked out, for no good reason?
Here is the website with the letter to Jay-Z.
