Nets Let Game Get Away in Second Half

The Nets fell to 1-24 on the road Wednesday night, unable to hang with the improved Raptors in Toronto. The Nets quickly went down 11 points, but the second unit turned the game around with an 18-3 run that spanned the first and second quarters. It was tight until the end of the third, when some poor execution by the Nets allowed the Raptors to go on a 12-1 run. The Nets couldn't get enough stops after that to make it interesting. Toronto shot 47 percent from the field, 10-16 from 3-point range and got to the line 29 times. The Nets had six guys in double-figures, with Kris Humphries recording his first double-double with the team, but Devin Harris shot just 4-17 from the field and turned the ball over four times.

Lol I’m starting to wonder if Harris is even better than Jordan Farmar. Nothing but pitiful play by him tonight.

what else is new….they might shatter this record

devin and yi both suck.
Yi should be coming off the bench. Harris needs to be off this team. he is not a good pg anymore, i dont know what happened but he plays no defense and cant pass to save his life.
twill playing only 10 min is just plain stupid.
I hope kiki gets fired. This guy is just horrible.

What a mess this team is. I mean seriously. And as for management, how many times so you get punched in the face before you do something about it?

at this point they need a full make over…you can expect guys that don’t know how to win to be able to turn this around….NEW BLOOD

I don’t care. Nice rebound by Yi after last night’s awful performance. TWill and CDR played well and Humphries, who is now part of the young core, had a double double.
Besides, they came back from being down 15-4 to take the lead.

the team played well for some periods. but not consistent. Yi played good in Q3. Held the team alone. still soft though!

“I don’t care.”
Jeebus.
The Nets are in big trouble if the guy who runs the premier Nets website no longer cares. That’s not good.
The feeling I keep having with this team is that nobody really tries hard. The players could not care less if they lose. And I don’t know how that turns around, even next year. There needs to be a lot of changes of personnel, even the “young core”.

Nets is not a Q4 team. No need to play Q4 anymore in the future.

Anyway notice that the second unit led by Humphries, along with TWill, Quinn and CDR averaged a +8, whereas all 5 starters were in deep Red?
Yet why didn’t they play more? Hmmm.
Humphries is a keeper, which means that if Nets add 1-2 big men next year, Yi wouldn’t get much PT. That should be obvious. China would be upset, just as China is screaming now about US arms to Taiwan and Obama meeting the Dalai Lama.
Glad Yi had better numbers so that some other team might take the bait by Feb. 18.
How about Yi + future 2nd round pick to get Ryan Anderson back. Orlando might go for it, because Yi wouldn’t be needed to defend much in Orlando – and Yi would be on a contender, even if limited minutes? Orlando games would go over Big in China, in that case.
by jerry25 on Feb 3, 2010 9:51 PM EST reply actions
That was “Anyone notice” correction above.
Evan Turner and Ohio State were playing at same time on the Big Ten Network. They beat Penn State, although it was close until the last few minutes.
Turner had 27 pts and 10 boards.
He leads OS in pts., boards, assists and steals.
Evan is so smooth. He has some role in nearly every play.
No problem being effective in his first year in NBA and he could play alongside Harris.
He is more likely to be College Player of Year than the Freshman Wall.

This excessive PT/offensive focus on Yi better be for trade purposes.

Lawrence Frank is in the News for appearing at the Orlando game last night.
Pardon the Interruption spent 30 seconds discussing whether the rumor about Frank being brought in to help Vince with his shooting slump was true. VC did have his best game in a while and Dwight Howard was all silly-happy at Vince’s post game interview.

How about Brook? 3 boards? He didn’t score much because of the double team but only 1 ast? 2 TO and got block 3 times.

one thing i noticed about harris is he digs the nets into a deeper hole. After another team scores on the fastbreak he tries to run a fastbreak after a made basket, he shoots himself and then misses. the nets lead then slips away. keyon is very poised and is calm and controlled

Yi is and will be the face of the Nets. For Kiki this game counts as a win for how well Yi played in the 2nd half.
by Tom F on Feb 3, 2010 10:22 PM EST reply actions
I didn’t think the Nets were that bad tonight. Like Net Income noted the Nets were down big early and managed to put together a run that put them up 10 points (I believe it was a 24-5 run). In games past that 10 point deficit would have turned into a 20 point one and so on and so forth.
So all in all it wasn’t that terrible. We’ve definitely seen some big improvements over the past week or 2.
by Nets in 2010 on Feb 3, 2010 10:27 PM EST reply actions
Yi had like 4 air balls tonight , 2 from around 4feet from the basket. How many of the other 29 NBA coaches would have kept him in the game? Kiki needs to realize that his Yi experament failed. It’s ok to be wrong sometimes. If he stopped using Yi as a featured player and more like a roll player I bet you he would lift a ton of presure off of Yi’s shoulders.

People are not mad at Yi because he is Chinese, he can’t help it that he sucks. We are mad at Kiki and Thorn for trying to shove Yi down our throats because he is supposed to be an international superstar. If he was not Chinese and it was based solely on ability he would be long gone by now. In addition, management feeding the fans this bull that Yi is 21 is also infuriating, he is 25. Add that RJ was traded for this bum and that RA was shipped out because of him adds to the anger at management, not Yi.

People this is a rebuilding team. A rebuilding year. Every poster on here can’t go a day without talking about John Wall or Evan Turner – yet complains when the team loses. It can’t go both ways. You either are built to compete for a championship or you blow it up and start all over. For a few seasons the Nets were not going to win a championship and just kept treading water in a 6-8 seed never able to improve in the draft. This time they decided to blow it up and rebuild.
You are seeing progress on a nightly basis. Unfortunately we have a young inexperienced roster and they don’t know how to close out games yet. It will come. Its a process. Its frusturating, but unfortunately its all a part of rebuilding.
Last night Devin was awesome. Tonight he was not so good. But Devin is not the guy to carry a team. When Brook has nothing going it puts too much on Devin’s shoulders. Once the inside becomes clogged his game is vastly diminished.
Our young core of Devin, TWill, Lee, CDR, Hump, Brook and even Quinn and Yi is progressing.
Now assume you add either Wall or Turner to that core and you have a good young team. If Dallas can fall out of the playoffs or even if we can get a 12th-20th pick from Dallas perhaps we can turn it into Cole Aldrich. And with a top 3 pick in the 2nd round maybe we can get Sherron Collins. We would now have depth in backcourt and at center. Rotational players at SF and PF. Spend wisely in free agency on a guy like David Lee or hope for Lebron and this team is very much headed in the right direction.
And I would love to see us trade for or buy a mid second round pick and get Damion James as a Humphries type player off the bench.
Build around the young core. Use the Dallas pick and our 2nd rounder to draft solid bench players and this team will have a bright future. The process is painful, but necessary.

The Raptors took the lead for good late in the third quarter after Kiki went with small ball. Nice job, Kiki. Reward Williams for playing within himself and focusing on his strengths by making his guard somebody six inches taller than him.

Yi is “famous” because of his peculiar status. He is a starter, long term, regardless of his performance. His team’s management ridded the team of his competition (Ryan Anderson) and refuses to acquire anyone who threatens his PT (Humphries coming as a shock to management, no doubt). Is there anyone else in pro sports with that status? I cannot think of anyone else. So, he is “famous.”

Did anyone notice that this is now 5 strait competative games. This is a definite improvement on the previous part of the season. This is all just pre season for the future. Next year nets will have (hopefully)a solid trade this year, a top draft pick(or 2),2 free agents, a healthy Harris,Hayes,Dooling,a new coach,a team with no one named CDR, CLee,Yi or TWill, and most importantly a grown up and less complaining Lopez. The maturing(emotionally) of lOPEZ IS MOST IMPORTANT!He has unlimited potential but is such a crybaby that this is the most important thing the Nets need to develop.

For once this thread shouldn’t be about Yi. He sucked in the first half, but played alright in the second. This one was a giant clunker from Devin Harris. Careless turnovers and horrific defense against Jarrett Jack. And they didn’t ride the hot hands of Terrence Williams, who was penetrating and passing nicely. Very weird game – they keep Bosh and Bargnarni quiet but let Sonny Weems and Antoine “The Next Allan Houston” Wright go off. Can’t understand it.

had the nets’ future leaders (devin and brook) played well like the nets’ future bench players (yi/hump/cdr/twill/quinn) the outcome would have been different.

That’s because these guys played defense, moved the ball, rebounded, and hustled. They actually gave a damn while that piece of garbage Harris stunk the floor up and Yi, while shooting decent, still played bad. The Raps were daring Lee to shoot.
Kudos to CDR for waking up and playing like CDR again. Lets see if he can keep working hard.
Brook with 3 rebounds and he was clearly frustrated with his lack of touches.
harris getting dealt out of here will be a blessing. Harris and Lee are the worst backcourt in basketball, They’d get ran by euroleague backcourt at this point.
by Mr. Dollar Bills on Feb 4, 2010 12:17 AM EST reply actions
instead of brook becoming frustrated about the lack of touches, he should be more aggressive in the post, getting there early and deep, sealing his man and then demanding the ball…doing that his teammates will HAVE to pass him the ball…crying won’t get you more touches.
by jirohkanzaki on Feb 4, 2010 12:29 AM EST reply actions
I like the energy that Quinn brings defensively. Too bad he only played about 3 minutes, but he did manage to nail two threes. Harris comes in, and the defense just fell apart. The Nets were lucky Bosh was cold for most of the game or it could have been pretty bad
by DanThePsycho on Feb 4, 2010 12:44 AM EST reply actions
Devin had terrible FG% but he is fast and does add a certain dimension to the game. The nets just couldn’t play 4 Q of good basketball. It’s also rediculous that some people here try to single out Yi (again)for this loss. He was bad for about 1 Q and he was also the one who had kept it close in 3rd Q. When he got off the court, that was when the collapse started. Don’t forget he was the top scorer of the team until he went out in the third. Are these same people trying to tell us that B Lo played a good game? Give the Raptors some credit, they have a lot of shooters. There was no defensive stop from any nets even when Kiki took Yi out in the final minutes, otherwise, the nets would have made it even closer.
by Russ on Feb 4, 2010 1:01 AM EST reply actions
Look at Yi’s stat: 15 points(top team scorer with Devin when DH was 4-17), 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block, and 1 steal. For the majority of basket ball fans, those are good, if not excellent, numbers.
by Tomas on Feb 4, 2010 1:59 AM EST reply actions
When Yi left in the 3rd quarter is was somewhere along 77-76. When he came back in the fourth, it was already 93-83. It’s not always him.
by Tincan on Feb 4, 2010 2:11 AM EST reply actions
I just didn’t understand about the stupid double team on Bosh by Harris. Bosh was close to the 3 pointer then come Harris, open 3 pointer by the Raptors. Harris has no idea on what is defense.
by Seeker on Feb 4, 2010 2:19 AM EST reply actions
If so many people are complaining about how Devin Harris is playing, then why not want to bring in his original mentor, Avery Johnson, who also happens to have about the highest winning percentage of any NBA coach – and has learned much since, watching from the booth?
Harris isn’t going anywhere unless Nets get the opportunity and then choose John Wall – and even then it might not be for another 1/2 year to see Wall develop.
Clearly his injuries, clogging the middle, because of the weak teammates are factors, as is not having the best coach.

That’s why I say the Nets have the weirdest fan base in the league if your going to bash one player for not playing well you might as well bash everybody. Yi did a beautiful job on defense he shut down Chris Bosh for half of the game leading up to the 4th quarter including Humpries. He got rebounds blocks and held his ground but nope New Jersey fans don’t care about that at all do they sad man sad I can’t wait till this team move to BROOKLYN!

The problem is that NETs fans have come to expect an All Star performance by Devin night after night after he made the team last year. Last year was an abberation! He is a good player on a good team, yet on a bad team he is a player that will force shots and attempt to change the game unsuccessfully by himself. Expect these performances night in and night out until the NETS surround Devin with higher caliber players.
