As Harris Goes, So Go the Nets

He's not just the captain...or it's only All-Star...or the only starter older than 24. Devin Harris is the Nets' barometer. When he plays well, so do the Nets. Everyone realizes it, including Harris. So why has he be so disappointing? Injuries of course is one reason. John Schuhmann of NBA.com breaks it down, noting in particular how teams clog the middle, something they couldn't do last year.

Not that it matters much, but Yi was 25 in October, and he is a starter.

by hoopsguy7 on Feb 3, 2010 9:13 PM EST reply actions

Trade him during the draft please. Him and yi for a major chip or role players.

i cant take his lack of defense and dumb passes.

How come Chris Quinn plays better defense than Devin Harris?

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Feb 3, 2010 9:24 PM EST reply actions

Chris Quinn plays better D than Devin??? Is that a joke. Quinn gets blown all the time.. doesn’t know what to do on a pick and roll. Harris plays lazy D but come on now. He is a decent defender. Other PGs don’t put up crazy numbers against him like they do against lets say Rondo. Harris should be kept. He is a solid asset to this team. This article was well written.

EVERYBODY plays better defense that Devin Harris. Harris is possibly the worst defensive PG in the league right now. The thing I found most interesting about the linked article is the evidence show just how bad Devin’s defense has been this year. The sidebar to the article gives Devin’s on-court/off-court defensive efficiency – that is, how many points (per 100 possessions) the Nets give up with Devin on the court, and how many they give up with him off the court. The numbers are:

On court: the Nets give up 113.4 points per 100 possessions
Off court: the Nets give up 101.9 points per 100 possessions

To put that in perspective, with Devin off the court, the Nets are a fairly decent defensive team – they would rank 8th in the league if they gave up 101.9 points per 100 possessions for the season. However, with Devin on the court, the Nets are FAR AND AWAY the worst defensive team in the league – and it isn’t even close. The worst defensive team in the league (Toronto, natch) gives up only 109.7 points per 100 possessions.

It is pretty clear that Devin Harris has been playing some of the worst defensive basketball in the NBA this season.

Man if the Nets do go down with the worst record in NBA history, Harris is going to be regarded as one of the team’s best players and as a ‘good guy’ who didn’t get enough help. Truth be told, the Nets could have double their win total right now had Harris been out.

If you want to be the worst team ever, just keep doing what they’re doing – make Devin Harris the focal point. He sucks as a player, point guard and teammate, plain and simple.

Harris = 7-75

You are all picking on Harris but the obvious problem with the nets is Yi…I’m not trying to bash him but we were getting destroyed at the start of the game and we made a complete turnaround when Humphries replaced him…This happens all the time…

by NetFan48 on Feb 3, 2010 10:56 PM EST reply actions

the All-NBA worse team has to start Harris with Yi.

by JohnY on Feb 3, 2010 11:30 PM EST reply actions

Harris can’t lead a team. That isn’t a good role for him. Next year, either trade him or get a real leader

by ben on Feb 3, 2010 11:48 PM EST reply actions

Bruce,

Saying that Quinn plays better defense than Harris doesn’t mean much, but at least he(and dooling) attempt to stay in front of their man. Harris does not. Jarret Jack looked like a stud tonight.

It’s laughable that you can say “he’s a decent defender” and admit that he slacks off of on defense. That does not compute.

It killed me to see at this time last year Nets fans taking a fat dump all over Vince Carter when Harris isn’t even doing 1/10th of what Carter was doing for this team and people come out of the woodworks to give him a pass.

HARRIS IS A BUM. UNDERSTAND THIS AND REALIZE WE AREN’T GOING ANYWHERE WITH A NO DEFENSE, OFFENSIVELY INEFFICIENT, LOW BBALL IQ HAVING SHOOT FIRST BUT CAN’T SHOOT POINT GUARD WHO IS INJURY PRONE.

Bad grammar NI.

You guys again love to bash Harris you say Dooling plays better D ok that is true but he is also a Veteran that has been around for years and has never really been the go to player he comes up and passes that’s it and from time to time he will knock down a 3. You guys want Harris to push temp play D make every shot oh and pass the ball too??? And as for him being worst defender in league I can name 5 off the top Nash, B. Davis, Stuckey, Calderon, J.Nelson. The honest truth with the team is that Yi is starting put Hump as starter Yi 6 man and we will see improvement right away. And a lot of ppl say trade him let’s just get Wall guys he is still a KID he is not goin to be ready to come in and make impact right away oh and by the way he doesn’t play an ounce of Defense either he gets a few steals in the passin lane which if he gets it great if not oh well suck to be his teammates. Our focus of draft should be EVAN TURNER he will make impact on both ends of floor right away and another top free agent to open the lane for harris and we can be a playoff team the east only has 4 GOOD teams (sayin lebron stays with clevland) the other playoff spots are always wide open. So gettin rid of Harris will hurt us more then help us in the long run he is signed to an extreamly resonable contract for a few more years. KEEP HARRIS
