Nets Unlikely to Dump Expensive Bench Warmers

The Nets long ago decided not to play the guys with expiring contracts unless they absolutely had to. Some may have thought Bobby Simmons, who's making $11.2 million this year, and Tony Battie, who's making $6.6 million, would be bought out this weekend. Not so. Rod Thorn says "I don’t have anything going on with any player right now." Nor does he expect anything. It's just an added frustration for Simmons.

Why have to dump them? They will be expired this summer no matter what.

Maybe they can sign somebody from D-League, but they won’t get much time.
Harris, Lee, Lopez are getting most the touches.

Apparently, the vets would like to be waived outright so they can try to get signed by a contender. They have to be waived by Monday in order to do that. As long as they are off the Nets roster by Monday, they can sign with another team. It’s been reported that Thorn wants money back if he’s going to waive a player. Players wouldn’t want to give up a million dollars unless they had a job prospect. None apparently do.
by Net Income on Feb 28, 2010 7:43 AM EST reply actions
None of the vets are worth a damn enough for a contender to even consider them. They might as well sit tight and ride it out
and kudos to whoever just erased that “What’s Twittering TWill trying to say” post. That was a serious attempt at grasping for straws since no one could honestly say what the context of his statement was or if he was taking a shot at anyone….that wasn’t news, that was an attempt to stir up unnecessary controversy.

is this the correct group of expirers- battie, boone, hassell, hayes, humphries, quinn and simmons? if so, i’m surprised that some of the playoff contenders couldn’t find a use for one or more of these guys. the signing cost would be very low (right?) and several of these guys could fill certain needs very well, i would think.
isn’t it also possible that the signer can take on some of the buyout cost from the nets, or is that kind of thing restricted to trades?

None of our vet, expiring contracts would get signed by contenders. Bobby Simmons is terrible… Tony Battie is the only player who would possibly seem attractive to a contender.

It was nice to see Hump and CDR in there late yesterday
by Christos on Feb 28, 2010 10:10 AM EST reply actions
This is why we need to get rid of CDR and Williams?
They can’t stay their mouth shuts. They are two good basketball players unselfish on court selfish off the court!
And then getting rid of the people that suck Yi, Boone, Lee
To Sixers in Off season:
Boone
Yi
CDR
Lee
Williams
To Nets in Off season:
Iguadola
J.Smith(7 footer not playing cuz of Brand and Spieghts)

Simmon’s making 11+ mil for sitting on this a$$ and then has the audacity to say he is frustrated… wow.. this is at par with Sprewell’s “I’ve got a family to feed” comment. Next year, he’d be lucky to get a Vet’s minimum contract somewhere.

IM curious to know if nets start Humphries and being Yi off the bench…this team if far from perfect but it is apparent that this team doesnt function well with Yi on the floor.
We have one roster spot open i believe…that should be enough to sign oneone so there’s no rush to buyout
by Andy on Feb 28, 2010 10:44 AM EST reply actions
I like Simmons and Battie
If we used Simmons in the corner this year with Hayes and Dooling off the bench like last year we would be doing buisness
by Randy Oreens on Feb 28, 2010 10:57 AM EST reply actions
Simmons, you are collecting an 11 million dollar check and you are quite possibly the worst player in the NBA! An absolutely unreal contract. If we released you, no one would pick you up. Stick tight and start planning for how you will spend your retirement money.
by Chris2 on Feb 28, 2010 11:55 AM EST reply actions
Shouldn’t we be waiving them so we can try out some top d-leaguers?
by Gina on Feb 28, 2010 12:25 PM EST reply actions
LOL @ Oreens….use Simmons in the corner…doing business…
Wait. He’s actually serious!
Read what Net Income said at the top about this. Simmons and Battie are worthless. That’s why they don’t want to give up a penney of what they got coming to them to get bought out, becaue no other tema or league is going to give them any money any more, so they’d simply be giving up money to get no money. They will just sit and collect and say buh-bye.

Gina has a good point. Simmons and Battie are going to get theirs whether they occupy the Nets roster or waived. Nets mgmt should think about trying to improve the team. Waive Simmons & Battie to clear roster space, bring in some D-leaguers to try out. Maybe we can find a hidden gem. There’s nothing to lose.

dont we have 1 roster spt available? 1 dleaguer is good enough…
yeah Andres….i want to see boone out there today also…
Hey NI…any update on Lee?
by Andy on Feb 28, 2010 1:15 PM EST reply actions
@ Andy, as bad as our team is we should try out the whole d-league. Just 3-4 different players every week.
by Gina on Feb 28, 2010 1:17 PM EST reply actions
jj r u out of your mind? u wanna get rid of Lee?
by netsfan on Feb 28, 2010 1:33 PM EST reply actions
@Gina do you think our cheap owners wanna pay guys 100k to come play for a week? I wish we took a shot at Mike Harris or someone but realistically the nets are not spending another dime til our man Proky comes through.
by Bruce on Feb 28, 2010 1:54 PM EST reply actions
@Andy
From updated Post piece this morning quoting Lee last night.
“It’s stiff right now because I just iced it,” said Lee, who hit one of the game’s biggest shots — a jumper in the third quarter when the Celtics were charging and the crowd was roaring. “Usually, when I sprain my ankle it’s something I can get over real quick.”
So his status is unknown for tonight.

Lee will be out today. hopefully CDR can seize the moment. I want Yi on that bench. i agree with hello. He should come off the bench because we need those points. Hays and Cdr forgot how to shoot. Everybody watch when Devin goes out in the first quater. Especially if we are ahead because when he goes out we fall behind. This game will depend on Kiki and how he uses YI, Boone and CDR.
by Spider Man on Feb 28, 2010 2:51 PM EST reply actions
C’mon Kiki, play Simmons! I hear he’s better than Jefferson
by Simon on Feb 28, 2010 3:16 PM EST reply actions
@jj
i think the better question for you is who dont you hate on this team? the scenario you mention is one of teh worst ive ever heard. CDR and Lee are keepers and boone is a a solid backup
by i on Feb 28, 2010 3:33 PM EST reply actions
jj,
also TWill has great raw talent, just needs to time to get better. You basically want to teake aprt the nets young core, make them 10 times worse, and completely eliminate them for being anywhere close to competing for anything for 10 years.
by i on Feb 28, 2010 3:35 PM EST reply actions
I’d keep playing Yi. He has been given this season to prove his worth. Its not like we are competing for a playoff spot. In stretches he has shown an ability to be an effective player on offense. Consistency over an 82 game season is his issue. I do think his defense has improved somewhat recently. Depending on how effective he is in the first quarter, I would increase Humphries playing time and give Boone some minutes if we are getting killed on the boards.
by Chris2 on Feb 28, 2010 4:02 PM EST reply actions
Seven Nets have contracts for next season…all are 27 or younger: Harris, Humphries, Lee, CDR, TWill, Yi and Lopez.
That’s who you should play. If you want to play Hayes and Dooling, fine.
by Net Income on Feb 28, 2010 5:06 PM EST reply actions
lol @ JJ we can’t give up our entire team for Iggy and Jason Smith…Iggy isn’t even worth Lee and Yi honestly, he can’t shoot, he’s not bringing us anywhere.
by Atronic on Feb 28, 2010 5:44 PM EST reply actions
OF COURSE he is frustrated. The fact that he is getting paid a lot has nothing to do with it. NO ONE works at something their entire life and is satisfied just sitting around and being paid for doing nothing. NO ONE. Every single player in the NBA that does not play every day is frustrated. Talent wants to perform, whether you are an athlete, an artist, whatever.
These guys have a limited career and the clock starts to tick as soon as they enter the league. Since they were little kids basketball has been their primary focus. Why would he be happy not doing it? Don’t you think he would be frustrated if, say, he had a broken leg and couldn’t perform for that reason?
