Snow Keeps Nets at Home

Teams get little practice during the season and between an off-day and a snow day, the Nets have rested a lot this week. Meanwhile, there's no word on whether any Nets vets will get offers from contenders before Monday. Players not waived by Monday can't get on playoff rosters. If someone does get a job offer, expect the Nets to demand some money back in a buyout, not simply waive the player.

The team that doesn’t get Ilgauskas might be interested in Battie or Boone. That would be Dallas or Atlanta…or even Cleveland.

Dallas can actually make a big pitch for Z. They still have their MLE and can off him up to $5.5 million. The Cavs can offer him the vets minimum…pro-rated…meaning about $400,000. MLE is not necessarily pro-rated, so if they wanted to, the Mavs could give him $5.5 million for the rest of the year or $2 million. Whatever. He had to give up $1 million to get bought out.

This is pathetic. Get to the “office” and do your job. I don’t want to believe that the people running this organization don’t care, but stuff like this makes it start to feel that way.

by NetsJetsFan on Feb 25, 2010 8:45 PM EST reply actions

Nobody will want any of our refuse: Simmons or Battie. I certainly don’t want to release Dooling. Maybe Maybe someone would be interested in Boone, but I still think he has value for us. I expect nothing to happen, but I wish Simmons or Battie would be offered and take a buyout. Then we could sign a d-league guy for the minimum, maybe someone who is really hungry and comes in and fights for playing time, maybe a backup center? Someone with a few inside moves, a ten foot jumper, and someone who can hit 70% of his foul shots? Playing YI or Boone to backup Brook really stinks. Maybe we strike gold in the d-league??

I had the same take. There was probably 3" of snow on the ground at 11am this morning. What are these guys a bunch of grammar school kids? Go to work like the rest of us. It just makes it look like management/coaches have given up and don’t care.

Who will pick up Larry Hughes he would be a great pick up by the Nets?

Griz just sent #2 pick Thabeet to D-League!!! Do I hear Bust?

TWill is better than several picks ahead of him.

Z was just bought out.

Cousins is a BEAST for Kentucky – on ESPN2

I’m watching John Wall right now he’s looked horrible this game, missing layups getting blown by missing ally-opps smh Dicky V is slobbering all over him even on his misses. I don’t now man, I just don’t know, is he that good??

by Atronic on Feb 25, 2010 9:52 PM EST reply actions

@jj

Seriously he wouldn’t.

by Mikee21 on Feb 25, 2010 9:54 PM EST reply actions

@Atronic

Keep in mind that the kid is only 19 years old he’s gonna have games where he just doesn’t have it. Outside of this game though yes he’s that good.

by Mikee21 on Feb 25, 2010 9:56 PM EST reply actions

Cousins was dribbling through traffic.
He may be ahead of Dwight Howard’s early level.
He and Howard are immature in different ways. Howard is silly immature and Cousins is angry immature. I think I may prefer the latter – Another KMart.

Is Wall the 2nd best player for Kentucky?

T-Will has been playing Call of Duty all week

by J-Kay on Feb 25, 2010 10:05 PM EST reply actions

@Jerry25

As I’ve seen so far in Kentucky games they always go to Wall in the crunch to dribble drive to the basket draw defenders and dish out. Or drive the lane and hope for a foul. But overall cousins dominate the games early but the ball is in Walls hands down the stretch.

by Mikee21 on Feb 25, 2010 10:05 PM EST reply actions

Shaq has “significant” sprain of his thumb. Tony Battie’s agent on Line 2.

by Net Income on Feb 25, 2010 10:09 PM EST reply actions

I honestly have seen Wall play a handful of times this season (I feel every Kentucky game is televised, no?). And quite honestly I have not been totally blown away by him. I understand he jumps out of gym, is 6’4’’, has a handle, plays d, good court vision, etc….but his jumper is definitely suspect. Again that is one thing you can teach.

But every kentucky game I have seen – I have been really impressed by Cousins. The guy is a double double machine.
Considering our absolute NEED for a power forward – Cousins makes a lot of sense for us from a need perspective. But passing on John Wall could be a huge mistake. Its going to be interesting. I think if we end up in the top 3 though – we will be happy. Either Wall, Turner or Cousins is going to help this franchise immediately. That 4th pick though…..that is a very bad position to be in.

by Ryan243 on Feb 25, 2010 10:14 PM EST reply actions

It doesn’t look like Patterson will be available with the Dallas pick. Too bad.

Regardless, it would take 1 year for Wall to come up to speed in the NBA. It would learn from Harris/Dooling.

Dooling would love the assignment to teach Wall. Nets would have to offer Dooling a revised contract.

by jerry25 on Feb 25, 2010 10:16 PM EST reply actions

That referee doesn’t seem to like Wall a little to much.

by Mikee21 on Feb 25, 2010 10:18 PM EST reply actions

I don’t see Patterson being successful in the nba. I do think downey from south Carolina is going to be a dynamite 2nd round pick. He single handedly won that game in the first meeting.

by ryan243 on Feb 25, 2010 10:28 PM EST reply actions

I agree I see the Nets drafting a back up point with the 2nd round Downey would be a good pick.

by Mikee21 on Feb 25, 2010 10:31 PM EST reply actions

31 too high for downey. He’s mid 40s.

Is cousins a 19 year old kmart? He’s nasty. Him and brook would be insane maybe we actually win if we don’t get top pick.

by ryan243 on Feb 25, 2010 10:41 PM EST reply actions

Cousins runs floor very well for a big.

by ryan243 on Feb 25, 2010 10:41 PM EST reply actions

Honestly tho I think it maybe better for our team to get the second pick tho, although not getting Wall we will be killed by the media and probably free agents who never seen wall play but watch highlights. I just think there isn’t a big enough jump between him and Devin on a talent level when Devin is healthy. But thats the other thing if Devin is healthy, but Cousins next to Lopez looks Niiiicccceee, or even Turner next to Harris. I do think Wall is a great player but I feel the hype is overblown, he’s not Carmelo in college or Durant. But I think another Wildcard is that if we get wall we can trade Devin for another asset he’s been an allstar and is back to form. I mean management has a lot of choices and decisions to make SMH.

by Atronic on Feb 25, 2010 10:42 PM EST reply actions

It doesn’t look like Cousins has the hops that Kmart has. Cousins looks alot like Antoine Walker in appearance.

by pawley on Feb 25, 2010 10:50 PM EST reply actions

I don’t trade devin. He can play with wall. I don’t remember a college player with more hype than wall in recent memory. Cousins is going to be a stud in the nba. He’s huge and has the frame to get much bigger. He’s your prototypical junkyard tough guy pf from back in the day. Maybe slightly less athletic kmart.

by ryan243 on Feb 25, 2010 10:54 PM EST reply actions

Anyone who compares Wall to Harris needs to put all that to rest now they can play together.

by Mikee21 on Feb 25, 2010 11:02 PM EST reply actions

@Mikee21 I agree they can play together, but if Wall proves he can be an above average player it might still make sense to trade Harris for pieces to fill other holes. Kind of like what Sacramento did with K-mart, once Tyreke Evans proved he could fill the same role for a cheaper price, they traded Martin, who like Harris was also somewhat injury prone and relatively expensive, for a player of roughly the same value but who filled a bigger need for them.

That being said, we still only have like a 25% chance of actually getting Wall, so we probably shouldn’t be making plans to trade Harris just yet.

by Gina on Feb 26, 2010 12:06 AM EST reply actions

@ryan243

I agree. Sometimes I think Wall is just a smokescreen so others can get Cousins or Turner from Us. I probably watched enough Kentucky games to think Wall is to Cousins just like Hardaway is to Mourning. I even DVR more than half a dozen games but all the more I’m convinced Wall is a Pick a Knick fan wants a Nets fan to pick.

I am for Trading Harris regardless if we get Wall or Not. Get a High pick plus a pass first point guard who can shoot like a Steve Blake at least or maybe trade straight up with Rondo because the Cetics could have a disastrous season, maybe Rajon is Available, no?

by melchi808 on Feb 26, 2010 12:12 AM EST reply actions

Yeah guys Cousins is having a solid freshmen season…he should have no prob being a top 10 pick and if he continues playing like this top 5.

john wall is overated. i like the way devin has been playing. keep him get cousins

harris
lee or wade
james?
cousins
lopez

by matt on Feb 26, 2010 1:18 AM EST reply actions

I’m all for Evan Turner. I’ve watched Wall over the last few contests and he’s not been really that impressive. To me, the ESPN hype machine has far outweighed what I’ve seen on the court. I think Jay Williams was right with assessment.

I’d rather go with Turner.

To me, people just say wall or bust because of the hype or they feel that drafting wall will bring in free agents. I think that idea is a bunch of crsp.

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Feb 26, 2010 2:21 AM EST reply actions

excuse me, “Jay Williams was right with his assessment”

Sheesh. I hope that the SB Nation changeover comes with an edit function.

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Feb 26, 2010 2:22 AM EST reply actions

Alonzo Mourning may be the best comparison for Cousins.
However, AM was a Center.
Would BLopez then become the Nets answer to a needed PF?
VC joked that BLopez should play PF?
Would BLopez become jealous of Cousins and start “pouting” if he was out muscled for a rebound?

I too am wondering if the draft should go as 1. Turner, 2. Cousins, 3. Wall, 4. (drop off)

Dicky V proclaimed Cousins a top 5 pick, and NBADraft.com has Cousins at #4 before last night’s game.

by jerry25 on Feb 26, 2010 5:06 AM EST reply actions

i think cousins can play PF…he is VERY big but he moves well for a big guy. He looks so heavy…i think he’s going to push around a lot of people in the NBA…hes going to be A BEAST.

i like turner alot but if we get cousins i’ll be happy. he’s been the 20’s in mock drafts for a long time…now a projected top 5 pick.

by Andy on Feb 26, 2010 6:31 AM EST reply actions

Ryan,

I can understand your assessment of Wall, yet keep in mind DRose was not the player he is now while playing with Memphis. In fact, I was not all that impressed with him while he was playing his freshmon year at Memphis, thinking that he could not shoot at all. I was wrong…and you are wrong about Wall.

by Adam on Feb 26, 2010 7:25 AM EST reply actions

The question is “why take a chance” with Wall, when you have “sure things” with Turner and “Alonzo Mourning” Cousins?

Seems Wall has his worst games against a good opponent PG.
Wall is a business partner with LeBron. The media shouldn’t let that influence opinion.

by jerry25 on Feb 26, 2010 7:58 AM EST reply actions

John Wall is overhyped. I’d take Turner over him any day. As for Cousins, he’s a beast. We should take him in a heartbeat if we end up with the 3rd/4th pick.

Oh, and don’t release Boone. Actually, start him at the PF for the remainder of the season.

by Andres on Feb 26, 2010 8:02 AM EST reply actions

I understsnd that wall and rose are similar and rose has been awesome. But its the same question as brook or rose. I’m glad we have brook rather than rose. Becomes best player or bigest need. That’s a tough decision

by ryan243 on Feb 26, 2010 8:56 AM EST reply actions

If cousins has the potential to be a dominant pf in the nba you have to consider the potential dominance of lopez and cousins up front. That’s 2 big bodies who can rebound and score in traffic. With brooks outside shooting the combo works with both on low block or a high-low.

Filling that need could be invaluable. It also gives more leeway with their other 2 picks. But getting a pure stretch the defense shooter becomes a priority.

If you go wall or turner you have the potential for a dynamic young backcourt for years to come. Not sure there is a right answer. I do think cousins is a more impressive big man talent than beasley was his freshmen year or griffin was as a freshmen. Also consider those guys were the focal point. Cousins is not.

by ryan243 on Feb 26, 2010 9:18 AM EST reply actions

Decision Decision as long as we get a top 3 pick we’ll be alright, if we get that 4th pick that will just be wrong.

by Atronic on Feb 26, 2010 9:40 AM EST reply actions

That 4th pick is the kiss of death in this draft. And I hope people have finally given up the Favors chatter for the 3rd pick. He has undwhelmed every time I have seen him play.

In a way – the Nets may actually win if they get the 2nd or 3rd pick in this draft rather than the 1st pick. If they have any question on Wall vs. Cousins and they have the first pick – the franchise will be MURDERED if they pass on Wall. Yet Cousins could be the better pick for them.

Either way – I would be happy with the addition of Wall, Turner or Cousins – even though Cousins fits our biggest area of need – an area we have struggled to fill since we lost Kenyon…..And Cousins is one of the closest players to Kenyon I have seen in recent years.

by Ryan243 on Feb 26, 2010 9:59 AM EST reply actions
