Yormark Wants to Put the NEW! in the Nets

Brett Yormark thinks a new broom sweeps clean and is already working on next season's marketing strategy: "We’ll have a new home, new coach, new owners, new players and a new attitude." He also hopes NEW Jersey Transit will find ways to make it easier for fans from NEW York to get to games in NEWark. Yormark expects to stay on next year. He got a nice NEW contract extension from Bruce Ratner.

Proky’s Biathlon team has two of three Russian golds plus one silver in Olympics.
Now Dave D should go and talk to the guy. He might be in better mood now.

Thank God Ratner is selling the team if he thinks that Brett Yormark is doing a good job. Unbelievable. I will never buy a ticket from the Nets as long as he is CEO.

Thorn is president of basketball operations, Yormark is president and CEO. Thorn reports to the ownership, not through Yormark. Yormark also reports to ownership. There was a report that once the ownership transfer takes place, Yormark will be part of Brooklyn Sports and Entertainment, the arena company, and will be paid by them, as will ticket reps, etc.

Amen to that.
Also how about a NEW CEO and President of “Sports and Entertainment” for the Nets. Yormark is a disgrace and has done nothing but turn off longtime fans of the team and treated many of its top paying customers like garbage.

New Jersey Transit lines to the games = good
Yormark being retained = bad
Ratner spending money to retain Yormark instead of anything else = ugly

when you look good, you feel good..
and hopefully that translates into more than five wins..

There was only 1 important (in a bad way) remark in the NYT article.
It said Yormarket was going back to China to look for more sponsors. That is disastrous news, because it indicates that Yormarket plans to have Yi Jianlian playing next year and wasting $4 million in cap space, which could even be renewed to over 5 million in cap space for 2011.
Even the announcers can’t take Yi anymore. Have people heard Ian Eagle’s reaction last night when Yi tried to dribble the ball in open court and still threw the ball to the other team?
It was like “Oh No, not again; this game is over”.

How about a NEW front office?
A NEW head coach?
A NEW PF, SF, and PG?
how about some NEW wins?

I thought Thorn was making basketball decisions. Thorn was supposed to be the one who is more skeptical about Yi, and should be getting more skeptical with every passing day.
Apparently Yormaket is still calling the shots, as well as Stern’s buddy named Kiki.
There is 2 solutions to this fiasco.
1. Send video tape highlights of Yi playing to Prokhorov (if he hasn’t watched already).
2. All remaining Nets fans carry banners to Dump Yi (maybe wear Red to games to get attention). Also have more chants to dump Yi. Eventually word will get to Proky, and he would pull the switch.
We were patient before the trade deadline to give Thorn a chance to get something back in return for Yi. It failed.
Now its time to act.

If they’re still playing Yi and paying him 4 million, and still convinced he should be starting for marketing reasons or whatever their reasons are, that significantly lowers the chances of them going after Lee doesn’t it? If the Knicks renounce Lee’s rights and we don’t even make an offer to him I think I’m just going to give up on sports.

How about a NEW starting 4?! (Brook Lopez is a beast)

Has anyone asked why have the Nets switched to the RED road jerseys? Is that in part to cater to the Chinese audience? I believe RED is held in reverence there. Could it be possible that we have sunk that low?
Face it, gang. We’re NEVER getting rid of YI!

Considering the decision to go with red uniform jerseys was made more than a year before the acquired Yi, that’s really weak. Red is also quite popular in Russia too. It’s the color of revolution, you know.
by Net Income on Feb 24, 2010 4:27 PM EST reply actions
For those wondering, the red jerseys were chosen so they could remove “New Jersey” from the blue road jerseys – one of the biggest insults amongst many that Yormark has treated the fans to.
Why not just go with blue generic “Nets” jerseys? Well once again Yormark thought he was out-smarting us all – with the color change he may have thought it took the emphasis off of the New Jersey removal but sorry Brett, most of us weren’t born yesterday.
The red jerseys are amongst the most hideous uniforms I have ever seen a so-called professional team wear and most of us hate them regardless of where we stand in the New Jersey vs Brooklyn debacle.

@Gina
At the time it was decided to pick up Yi’s $4 million option for 2010-2011 early in the season, it was generally believed to be reasonable, since that is in line with a back-up PF salary.
However, Yi’s level has declined (probably his value around the League too) despite great effort by Kiki as well as giving him increased minutes, even after Thorn was able to obtain Humphries.
To answer your question, since Yormarket is apparently also running things, he should want to get DLee too, since that would steal some Knicks fans – at least he should realize that.
Even If Nets were to trade Yi at the end of the season, they would probably bring back a new similar salary, but at least it would be 1 less “piece” for a successful future.
Orlando wants to get rid of Brandon Bass (possible backup combo forward) and his salary matches Yi’s. All Nets would have to do is include something more, like cash and 2nd round pick(s).

@Isaac
I will agree with you in part on this one issue of removing the New Jersey name. That was an insult on Yormarket’s part, but now the battle is about over and time for a truce.
Once a few more details are settled with Barclays proceeding, maybe Yormarket and others would realize its Okay to put back the New Jersey in some form.
How about renaming the team NJ/Brooklyn Nets for the next 2 years. Bring back the old ABA-like uniforms with stars down the sides.
Anyone see the Kentucky uniforms with the white stripe down the sides? They look like the better team without even playing!
by jerry25 on Feb 24, 2010 5:19 PM EST reply actions
If they do this right during the off season the Nets can win back some fans. They have to market the team and the Prudential Center’s easy access heavily.
If they can get Wall and a big FA or two, the fans will buy into it.

NI,
Calm down, Grumpy. It was a talking point, not a statement of fact. Maybe the Nets knew what direction they were going before they brought Yi over. How long has Yormark been here?
by Morpheus on Feb 24, 2010 5:47 PM EST reply actions
The Nets would have to be high to even consider keeping Yi as the starting PF. Let him and his 4 million dollars rot on the bench next year, the Chinese fanbase are probably disgusted with his play as well.
by Mr. Dollar Bills on Feb 24, 2010 6:07 PM EST reply actions
Do any of you really think Yormark would hesitate to promise Chinese sponsors that Yi would be playing a key role next year even if he knew full well that Yi would be gone?
We’re talking about YORMARK here. Reversible jersey, reversible promises.

I am DYING to see the Kidd-era grey alternates reinstated, with either “JERSEY” or “NEWARK” on them. After all Yormark, said that the last season before the move would be a “CELEBRATION of NJ” and I personally loved those uni’s. Plus they’d sell like crazy as the demand for anything NJ would be huge in the last 2 seasons here. It’s a win for all parties. Like the idea?
by NJ4Life on Feb 24, 2010 8:10 PM EST reply actions
I want to clue in Yormark, there aren’t too many fans traveling in from New York City. The NETS fans are already here in New Jersey!

On another note, Yormark should improve the merchandise available on the Nets webpage. Basketball goes throughout the winter and I do not see any nice looking sweatshirts or heavier shirts. In addition, I see very little novelty items worth purchasing and the hat styles are awful! So, update and offer NEW merchandise for the fans. You can throw in anything with New Jersey in front of the Nets as well.
by JustinNJ on Feb 24, 2010 9:52 PM EST reply actions
If Yormark cares so much about getting fans, then he should start with the ones that already exist in NJ. The Nets have been a NJ team longer than they have a NY team and that is even with counting the seasons in the ABA. For much of their time as NY team, they barely even stayed in one town out in Nassau County yet they manage to pretty much stay in the Meadowlands since 1981, though they were temporarily playing over at Rutgers University for three years before that. Please don’t tell me that they were originally a NY team, because they weren’t and they were known as the NJ Americans in their very first season back in 1967.

While I like where you are going with some Jersey retros, I was not a fan of the grey unis. They are certainly better than the atrocious red road unis they are wearing now but the ones I would like to see in order of preference:
1 “tie-dye” style early 90s road unis (Petro/DC teams)
2 early to mid 90s sky blue road unis
3 stars and stripes home and road unis
4 our most recent blue road jersey with “New Jersey” on front
by Isaac on Feb 25, 2010 9:14 AM EST reply actions
The road reds are the worst Nets unis I have ever looked at.
They should go back to the Nets ABA unis or come up with a new jersey for the next few seasons. The blue roads with New Jersey were bland and boring too.
by Newark Nets (Formerly Jersey Pride) on Feb 25, 2010 11:23 AM EST reply actions
Well I think we have found two things that almost all of us can agree on as Nets fans:
1- The road unis are hideous and need to go
2- Yormark is a creep and has turned off almost all of the team’s fans
