Red-Hot Second Half Not Enough for Nets

The Nets showed some resolve Tuesday night at the Izod Center, rebounding from a 20-point deficit against the Blazers, but they just couldn't get enough stops to finish the comeback. The Blazers shot 59 percent in the first half, led 54-34 late in the second quarter, and were up 19 in the break. The Nets caught fire in the third quarter and cut the lead down to five midway through the fourth, but that would be as close as they would get. The Nets shot 21-33 in the second half, but the Blazers shot 55 percent for the game and turned the ball over just three times. Devin Harris and Courtney Lee led the Nets with 28 points apiece and Brook Lopez finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Man! Regardless of losing, the second half was probably the best half of Nets basketball this season. If courtney Lee played like this consistantly (as well as Harris and Lopez), the Nets would be taken much more seriously. But man, what a tough loss after playing so great in the 2nd half.

This team is just pathetic. We will break the record.

Feed brook the ball in the last few minutes of the game and the outcome might be different…… Jus too many forced shots down the stretch by Harris and lee

I only watched the second half because I was at dinner. I was pretty impressed with the play of Courtney Lee. CDR is so hesitant when he is in. He just looks to pass. Yi sucks as usual. I want Hump to get more minutes. Devin keeps playing great. Guy would average 9 assists a game if we could just shoot a little bit. Some of those foul calls against us down the stretch when we cut it to six were just pathetic. I always heard rumors of Aldridge for Harris. If we get wall then they can ship him lol.
Wall/Dooling
Lee/ Twill/2nd round pick
Lebron/ CDR
Aldridge/ Hump/ YI
Brook/Dallas Pick

Only if the Nets had a good PF to play with the promising Center and the guards and wing players this team has.
At least an average PF. That’s all this team needs.

as long as Yi plays 30 min a nite we will lose. cdr did a better job than hayes does on most nite in 13 min. why twill only played 4 min?
by superb on Feb 23, 2010 10:08 PM EST reply actions
@ Bruce, why would Portland want to trade Aldrige for Harris? Especially when they have so many guards and so few big men?

SMH I can’t stand Kiki anymore, I mean were 5 and something for god sake why is Trenton Hassel playing, why is Yi playing so much. Why can’t Kiki have a consistent lineup and talk to T-will CDR Boone and Humphries about how many minutes he’s looking to play them. His indecisiveness and lack of experience is killing this team. I mean come on Kiki do something right, he can’t even get a technical because referees don’t take him seriously. He’s a joke in a suite who needs to be gone, I honestly feel like he’s roadblock with his aura or energy or something nobody likes him probably except for YI.
by Atronic on Feb 23, 2010 10:19 PM EST reply actions
KiKi knows he’s not coming back after this season ends, so he’s doing everything a coach can do to make his team look pathetic..
Keep Twill and CDR on the bench
start YI and Hassell
keep the ball out of Brook’s hands
keep Devin on the floor when he’s in foul trouble
on and on and on…
by mcbubba on Feb 23, 2010 10:19 PM EST reply actions
Harris, lee and Lopez, played well, but we get nothing out of Yi, why the heck can’t Kiki bench him and start Hump instead?
This is so frustrating to have this looser Yi playing all those unproductive minutes, all that to justify their trade for JR, and to apease the Chineese to come to watch, which will never work, Yi is not Yao and will never be, we’ve seen enough.
by Marco on Feb 23, 2010 10:25 PM EST reply actions
@Atronic, yeah I didn’t get it at all, we’re awful, we’re supposed to be focusing on development, and yet we’re playing trenton hassel 30 minutes and CDR 12, T-williams only gets 4? It makes absolutely no sense. I even like Kiki as a gm but he should be fired for that alone. There’s just no excuse for it it’s not like Hassel was doing anything.

Look at the Celtics and why they win? Look at Rondo’s Stat line from tonight’s game: R. Rondo G 37:12 6-12 15pt 16 assists. He distributes the ball to the other players and they make shots. Why is Rondo so good, so early in his career? DOC RIVERS, a GREAT POINT GUARD, is his coach. DEVIN HAS MORE NATURAL TALENT, but no coaching. What is John Stockton doing these days? Come on PROKY, get approved and take out your check book and hire John Stockton to coach Devin. OR maybe Mark Price? OR Maybe we bring in Mark Jackson to coach the whole team? That’s it. Or maybe Bring Mark Jackson into coach Devin, and PATRICK EWING to coach Brook and bring in a head coach with experience who can coach defense. I’ve got it: JEFF VAN GUNDY!! With JVG, Mark & Patrick, we could even rename the team? PLEASE WELCOME YOUR 1990 NEW YORK KNICKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
by Paul Erstein on Feb 23, 2010 10:48 PM EST reply actions
I’d say Harris is a great passing combo guard, where as Rondo is more of a true point guard. When Doc had Al Jefferson and Gerald whats his name and all those other young players no one was talking about his great coaching ability or developing skills. It’s probably easier to develop 1-2 young players when they’re surrounded by all-star veterans to bail them out than it is to develop an entire team of young players.

i was at the game tonight….. as usual the Nets sucked it up in the 1st half..but the 2nd half was impressive… i knew they would lose in the end but i was very impressed with Harris and Lee… here is hope for this team in the future… good pieces to work with….
only thing is Yi and Kiki gotta go !!!

Again, Yi should have been on the bench. Great game from Devin, Courtney and Brook. Too bad we let another win get away. Horrendous 1st half and tremendous 2nd half, however, too big of a hole to get out of.
by JustinNJ on Feb 23, 2010 11:29 PM EST reply actions
If Devin continues to play like this, we should keep him as a starting sg if we are lucky enough to get John Wall at the pg.
by JustinNJ on Feb 23, 2010 11:31 PM EST reply actions
In reference to gina’s comment about developing young players….last year kiki told me its really difficult to try and develop more than 1 or 2 guys at a time. The way this team was constructed for rebuilding, getting cap space and with front office’s hands tied regarding money…..we have a very young roster. Kiki is forced to try and develop Yi, brook, lee, twill, cdr and to an extent hump and making devin into a leader. That’s a tall task.
Kiki is an excellent GM but we really need a very experienced coaching staff. Next year will be 3 more rookies to integrate to a young team. Mark Jackson or Ewing as head coaches would be a disaster. I still like idea of mike fratello. And I would keep Roy Rogers on the staff. He has done very well with Brook.

Why didn,t someone tell Portland that "tweet"Dr "dominates practice as he claims! This guy makes my skin crawl, what a cancer. But Nets didn,t lose because of “tweet”. Yes he stinks but not as bad as Kiki and Yi, also turnover machine TWill.Lee has talent and only needs to be more consistant. If they want to develop the young guys, they shoul spend the rest of the season trying to feature Lopez and Lee by trying to run the offense thru them.

Your starting Nets forwards:
TRENTON HASSELL 32 minutes, 2 points, 2 rebounds.
YI JIANLIAN 35 minutes, 6 points, 2 rebounds.
Mike Harris was just called up from D-League to the Washington WIzards. Nice going, Nets.
Reggie Williams, Alexander Johnson, Carlos Powell, and Dwayne Jones (almost called up to Dallas) are still available, but the Nets are too cheap.

Just want to comment on some of the nets who don,t play but you never hear any complaints or “tweets” about how tough life is when no one sees your overwelming talent but you.Boone sees very little playing time for weeks but when he gets in all he does is hustle on every play! Same for Hassel! Never hear negative talk from Simmons or Battie!I respect that kind of player for their character and professionalism. CDR just "shut up " and try to enjoy the next few games you have left in the nba.
by FrankC on Feb 23, 2010 11:48 PM EST reply actions
If Yi has an injured shoulder rest him. Boone started the season in his place and did a good job. But that was when we had a coach. I’ve nothing against Yi, but the kid is burnt out and busted up. This is not the way to progress him. Its mental.
by Scott on Feb 24, 2010 5:06 AM EST reply actions
I agree with you, Scott. It’s mental. I don’t dislike him, but Yi shouldn’t be given this much PT. We should start Josh Boone in his place.

Do you know why CDR is always in the news? It is not because he asks for the attention. It is because he is articulate and tells the truth. When he was at Memphis you never heard from him, until after the final, when he was the only person who would take blame for his missed free throws, and call Kansas the better team that nite. Watch the video on You Tube, it shows his character.

I guess what the nets need is a bunch of guys that talk the party line, don’t mind when they lose, and just keep their mouths shut and cash their checks. Wait, you already have that don’t you.

The crowd was into it. CDR was out there before the game shooting jumpers with the stick guy. You can see his surly attitude during the game, though. Complaining to refs and generally walking around like the world is against him.

We’re rounding things out here. With Harris getting healthy, it’s really been opening things up for Courtney Lee, who we know by now could be a great starter as a 3rd (or so) offensive option if he maintains some consistency.
We don’t have a starting SF on this roster. Hassell and Hayes should be backups or third stringers on separate veteran teams and T-Will and CDR are both guards.
So many questions I lay in bed and ask myself after each game I watch this team lose…
-Does Evan Turner weigh enough to ever be a SF in the NBA? Will he ever?
-With the right coach, could things click defensively for the young veteran, Rudy Gay?
-Would David Lee work next to Lopez? Would he be better defending PF’s or worse?
-Is John Wall the answer?
-Could Harris REALLY play SG?
-How could we get Kevin Love from Minnesota?

“Trenton Hassell was only 1-2 from the field for 2 points in his 32 minutes, but he did play a very nice game and did as good a job as you can do on a guy like Brandon Roy late in the game. Hassell made Roy work for his baskets, and that is the best you can ask for when talking about the league’s premier players. In fact on two possessions late, Hassell was able to keep Roy from touching the ball.”
That’s why Trenton Hassell gets minutes for all of you asking why

Yi’s line: 6 pts (3 for 7), 2 rb, 3 TO in 36 mins
What a cream puff. Why is he getting PT?
CDR 6 pts (2/2, 2 ft), 2 rb, 2 TO plus 5 fouls in 13 mins
At least he is trying hard (maybe too hard).
Is it June yet?

Exactly. When CDR opened his mouth about how losing was unacceptable, people were appalled that he dared to tell the truth(and this was while he was playing good basketball)…and it just snowballed from there. I wish him the best of luck because he can be a really good player once he matures mentally and physically.

Gina, I agree with you, I also want to say that the five on the floor should always be your best five at the moment, in other words, if Yi is becoming unproductive, he should be yanked out, if Hays is unproductive he should be yanked out, and Kiki should keep the most productive unit on the floor all the time because you need to win that’s what they are playing for, hw should look at coaches out west and see what they do, YOU DO NOT KEEP A PLAYER ON THE FLOOR IF HE IS HEARTING THE TEAM PERIOD, now tell me how long has Yi been hearting the team? That’s not how you develope a player, a big part of his development is teaching them wining basketball, enough said.
by Marco on Feb 24, 2010 11:45 AM EST reply actions
I was at the game and was watching Kiki. The guy just sat in his chair and did nothing till there was about 5 minutes to go and the Nets were close. It’s ridiculous that Yi gets 36 minutes a game. What do they see that we don’t?
by BB on Feb 24, 2010 11:50 AM EST reply actions
I think FrankC brings up a good point. The thing you always hear from guys who don’t get to play is that you have to be ready whenever your number is called up. These guys don’t complain about the role their given or their playing time, they just show their game when they’re given their opportunities. I don’t like the exaltation of the cocky attitude some players have. Look at the type of guys San Antonio goes after, guys who have gotten over themselves and their need to feed their egos.
by muwu on Feb 24, 2010 11:50 AM EST reply actions
Roy still had 28 points Muwu. He didn’t do that great of a job.
by BB on Feb 24, 2010 11:51 AM EST reply actions
Kiki does nothing as a coach. Absolutely nothing. He is killing the careers of young players. He is an ego maniac at this point who is too proud to even let an assistant coach do the job, and there are plenty of assistants who would do it for very little money to put it on their resume (“Coach John Doe took over the Nets in March and got 10 wins in the last 2 months” Think that’s not possible?)
If I still had season tickets, I would probably be banned for throwing a drink on Kiki. If I had the chance, I’d give him a Big Gulp shower in public.

Hassel in my eyes did a terrible job guarding Roy he got past him way to easily on consecutive possessions, and again we lost the game. Why not loose with our young players, and get them more minutes the fluctuation of minutes is ridiculous for a 5 win team, thats supposedly trying to develop players for next year. Hassel should not be playing were not making a playoff run.

I’m starting to lose interest. Until Yi is out of the starting lineup, I can’t think of anything significantly different enough going on to make this team earn my time for the rest of the year. I’m not asking for wins, just something different so I can imagine who besides Lopez, Harris, and Lee are worth keeping.
I’ll check in during the 4th quarter and watch if it’s close. But otherwise, I just have other things I can watch.
I’m pretty sure I’m not alone and the Nets already have a small fan base. Wonder if they really care.
