Knicks Dis Marv on Anniversary

When the Nets celebrated the 30th anniversary of their first ABA championship, they invited play-by-play guy Bob Goldsholl to the ceremony. But Monday night, the Knicks stiffed Marv Albert, not inviting the Hall of Famer to the 40th anniversary of their first title. And Marc Berman writes, Marv was a big part of that Knick drive. Marv thinks it could be an oversight, but Berman thinks it's simply another Knick dis.

Marv should be back announcing Knicks games or sticking to all of his national tv duties. He didn’t need to come to YES and steal Ian Eagle’s job as primary play by play announcer for the team he had given over a decade of great service to. No one here should feel sorry for Marv. Hopefully if that clown Dolan ever steps aside, Marv will go back where he belongs and Ian can return to being the one and only play by play man for the Nets (except when his NFL Sunday duties call.

No one is feeling sorry for Marv…. way to jump the gun…

by rightclue on Feb 23, 2010 11:09 AM EST reply actions

Ok then rightclue – what was the point of that posting?

And let me say this – I am well aware Marv is one of the best the business has ever seen and just about every team in the league would be happy to call him their announcer.

That being said, bringing him was just another blatant example of this management group trying to transform this team from the New Jersey Nets to the Junior Knicks.

Ian Eagle has been one of the only constants for decades now in this organization – one of the only people that truly understands and appreciates everything Nets. Marv came over here and basically kicked him to the curb and tried to bring MSG to the Meadowlands – and that simply doesn’t work.

There may have been buzz about getting Marv and first but if you ask longtime Nets fans who they would rather hear on the games today, i’m pretty sure Ian would win by a wide margin. And look what happens, the team gets awful and now Marv is nowhere to be found. If the Nets’ miracle plan comes through and they get Wall and LeBron, i’m fully expecting Marv to be back on for the majority of the games which would be a real shame.

The Birdman is the Nets and hopefully regardless of where they play, he will be doing the games. At least then i’d have a reason to watch from home even if I never go to a game should they move to Brooklyn.

@Isaac

Way to respond to someone saying you jumped the gun with a four paragraph diatribe.

by Anthony on Feb 23, 2010 11:36 AM EST reply actions

well i’m sorry rightclue and Anthony – simply don’t read my comments then if they bother you so much.

My point is Marv still feels like the Knicks/national announcer moonlighting as a Nets announcer because he didn’t get along with management there. This article simply points to the fact that the Garden doesn’t want him back since the same ownership group that ran him out is still in place.

I hold out hope that Marv will finish his career as the Knicks play by play man and Ian will do the same for the Nets. Period – end of story.

Ian Eagles is so much fun to listen too, I don’t miss Marv’s arrogance and his bashing of the Zsar(Fratello) every game he’s announcing, he has no class and I think the Knicks realize that.

by Marco on Feb 23, 2010 12:08 PM EST reply actions

I liked listening to Marv call the Nets, it kind of made our games seem more important. That being said, Ian Eagle IS the Nets. He deserves to be our play-by-play guy for as long as he wants. I wish we could get Mark Jackson back though, Sparky doesn’t do much for me. Ian + Czar or Jackson = fun, even if watching the Nets isn’t.

I agree. Most people would say they still watch Nets games on t.v. because of Ian and Mike. They definitely add much needed energy to viewing the game.

at frigidevil:

were you following the team in the ’90s and 1st year of the run with Kidd?

Ian Eagle + Bill Raftery = best Nets annnouncing team ever.

For some reason when they moved from SportsChannel to YES, Raftery was let go and replaced with Kelly Tripuka, who was awful. Spanarkle at least has a history being part of the Nets telecasts. Mark Jackson did a great job in his brief time with the team as well.

by Isaac on Feb 23, 2010 1:38 PM EST reply actions

Eagle & Raftery were the best! Ba Da Bing for those who remember.

After the first NYK championship season, they put out a 33-1/3 record that captured the highlights. It was mostly radio broadcasts by Marv. It was terrific. I listened to it all the time. So back in the day.

Marv is kind of irksome now especially when he has Fratello by his side. He gave a kind of legitimacy to the Nets when they hired him, and he is still a lot better than most play by play guys but the banter with Czar is pretty lame. (Granted so is the team whose game he is calling but still…)

“With the little kiss!”

Eagle does the NCAA with him sometimes. It’s tremendous.

Yes TWilliaM and several times during the past few years they were thankfully paired for some playoff games on NBA TV – I hope that continues this April/May.

Ian Eagles is the man

but I’m sorry, I actuaLOL’d the other night when Marv took a classess, callous shot at Mike Fratello during the post game wrap up

“Didn’t you wear that same suit two days ago???”

I almost fell over in my chair.

I like Marv Alvert and am glad we have him for some games. But I watch games on league pass and sometimes I like a refreshing home game after watching a lot of away announcers. And theres just something aobut Ian Eagle that fits with the nets.

by Shea23 on Feb 23, 2010 6:07 PM EST reply actions

Marv not just bashes any announcer on the game with him, he even gets personal, and it’s one of the reasons you don’t see Ian Eagle with him, not to mension his annoying old voice when he says YES, he is so full of himself that he thinks any statistic mentioned by the other announcer is stupid and only what he notices or his own remarks are so important, sometimes I turn the volume down when he is on.

by Marco on Feb 23, 2010 7:16 PM EST reply actions

@Issac
I was a following the team in 01 but was only 12, and my parents didn’t have FSN. I was so happy when the YES network came into existence, but I do remember the broadcasts lacking something from previous years.

It should also be mentioned that anything food related ever happens, my roommate and I yell DEVOURED!
