Feed the Beast, aka Brook

There was much finger-pointing Monday over why Brook Lopez's touches dropped dramatically as the game went on...and the Nets lost. Devin Harris said he was partially to blame. Keyon Dooling said Lopez must demand the ball. Kiki Vandeweghe thinks force-feeding works if there are reliable perimeter shooters on the court (there aren't). Still, Lopez himself says it's not in his "nature" to be so demanding.

Simple: Brook Lopez will be one of the greatest centers to ever play the game. theres no question brook must get the ball in tight situations and throughtout the game on a consistatn basis.

The fact that yi is playing minutes and takinfg shots away from brook is absurd. boone should be playing, he gets the job done and feeds the ball to brook.

BROOK LOPEZ- Center of this franchise for years to come

@i
Be careful! Yi may read your post and cry. His confidence is very fragile.

by rambler on Feb 22, 2010 4:37 PM EST reply actions

Its a shame we don’t have a better 3 point shooting game because it would open things up for brook.a pf who I think would also be perfect for brook to work w is carlos boozer.

@Rambler

Lol, whats not fragile no about yi???

@i
How can you watch the Nets and say that Brook will be one of the greatest centers to play the game? I mean the kid’s a great talent and will be a consistent all-star but do you think taht if we had a second year Kareem, Wilt or Patrick on this team that we’d be 5-51? Your optimism regarding the future is refreshing but I mean a franchise player doesn’t lead his team to a 5-51 record.

by The Legend on Feb 22, 2010 4:54 PM EST reply actions

@The Legend

You honestly have to be kidding yourself if you blame this record on Brook as consistent as he’s been this ENTIRE SEASON. Just take yesterday’s game as an example before you downplay Lopez.

by Mikee21 on Feb 22, 2010 5:00 PM EST reply actions

Lopez gotta get better position…and dont get pushed out…

by Akara on Feb 22, 2010 5:04 PM EST reply actions

Brook should get 20 shots a game, from good passes feeding him in the post. PLUS maybe one or two top of the key shots, just to keep the defense honest. Devin is the PG, he needs to make this happen. I think Dooling does a better job of distributing than Devin does. Now that Hayes has had enough time to get into game shape, and get his shot in order, he and YI and Lee and Devin should be able to spread the floor enough to make double teaming Brook at least a little more difficult. OBVIOUSLY, I think that I would do a better job coaching this team than KIKI is doing. OK, so I am a little nuts. If you have read me before, you know this. GO NETS?

by Paul Erstein on Feb 22, 2010 5:04 PM EST reply actions

i said it before instead of sulking brook should put himself in a good position early and demand the ball and if it doesn’t work then reverse to the other side…it would be harder for lesser pgs to KNOW you are in a good position than you telling the pg “i am in a scoring position, GIVE ME THE DAMN BALL!”
also, whenever t-will shoots in volume bad things happen…

by jirohkanzaki on Feb 22, 2010 5:11 PM EST reply actions

Its actaully a 3 piece puzzel. We need a reliable shooting guard to open up the court to get Harris into the game and stop the double team on Lopez. A reliable PF would alos help. (and of course a coach)

I still think that we are only a couple of guys away from a competitive team (not championship team obviously). A good result from the draft and one or two signings and 2010/11 season may even be watchable.

by Scott on Feb 22, 2010 5:16 PM EST reply actions

how about a coach?

by supernetsfan on Feb 22, 2010 5:20 PM EST reply actions

John Wall and Brook will be a great dynamic duo for years to come!!!

Assuming we get the number one pick of course! lol

Russell. Abdul-Jabbar. Chamberlain. Olajuwon. O’Neal. Malone. Walton. Robinson. Reed. Mikan.

Yes Lopez has potential, but I think we should hold off on reserving a spot for him among the all-time great centers. Just sayin’.

Brook=Duncan

they have almost the same game.

@ i
I too really love brook and i am so happy the nets have him. He gives me so much optimism. The way he developed from last year to this and how he handled his new role leads me to believe that he will be on the level of Pau Gasol or better. But i seriously think he will be the top 3 center in the game for most of his career. But he won’t be one of the greatest centers ever to play. Those guys were just dominant their whole playing career. But i like the optimism! With more muscle and experience he will be amazing offensively.

by Sparklespice on Feb 22, 2010 6:17 PM EST reply actions

@ Delacratic

You left out my boy Patrick Chewing!!! If Brooks career numbers end up mirroring Pat’s, id be happy. Not the whole championship part…just the stats!

by bknetsfan on Feb 22, 2010 6:53 PM EST reply actions

The sky’s the limit for Brook. His stats will improved. And his “nature” of not demanding the ball will start evaporating as his hunger for winning grows.

by Ely on Feb 22, 2010 7:10 PM EST reply actions

This is what I have been begging for the last year and a half. You feed Brook inside. He has great post moves, spin moves and he can shoot. Worst case scenario he gets fouled and goes to the free throw line where he shoots over 80%. Not only does he go to the line, but, the other team continues to pick up fouls, which, allows our other players a better chance of getting to the line. At this point our team should play inside out, not outside in like it has been playing. We don’t have great shooters on the team and we also don’t have a top flight sf or sg like a Jordan or Lebron who can take over games. Therefore, we should follow other teams who have had great success with big centers. Shaq, David Robinson, Ewing, Hakeem, Duncan, Howard, etc.

by JustinNJ on Feb 22, 2010 7:12 PM EST reply actions

It’s a shame Brook has to “be more demanding”… If only the Nets had somebody on the sidelines telling the team what plays to run and who to give the ball to… I’m gonna go ahead and use the term “coach” to describe that person. I know it seems to be a foreign concept, and might be some radical thinking, but we should get a “coach” to help the team with these on-court decisions. But next season, he shouldn’t be a guy in glasses and turtlenecks. You’ll thank me later.

by JB on Feb 22, 2010 7:25 PM EST reply actions

@bknetsfan

I’m aware I left out Ewing. Honestly, it was out of spite – I just wanted to stick it to the Knicks (as if my posting actually held sway).

I know all the cards have yet to be dealt, but the new developments in the race for cap space (and all its subtext) has me concerned.

by Delacratic on Feb 22, 2010 7:53 PM EST reply actions

Ah good idea! Forget Chewing. He NEVER WON A CHAMPIONSHIP! Sorry Knicks fans! The other guys I listed have won championships, so lets compare Brook to those guys only. That is what I want as a Nets fan, Championships! Except for Howard, who still has a good chance to!

by JustinNJ on Feb 22, 2010 8:06 PM EST reply actions

NO EXCUSE for NOT going to LOPEZ in the SECOND HALF!!!! Yeah, brook needs to be more demanding, but the PGs need to realize that the cash cow is Brook. The PGs need to thinking give it to the big man and I will get it back when he gets doubled. Brook needs to learn to pass it out of the double team. This is suppose to be a development year and passing out of the double team needs to be one of Lopez’ skills that need to be developed. So KIKI SHUT THE F UP and Have the guards pass the ball to Lopez. No reliable shooters! I DONT CARE!!! Let Lopez learn the hard way. Make them become reliable. How are people suppose to be reliable if the plays you are calling suck? Harris doesnt penetrate and kick out. Lee isnt coming off screens. Hayes should be playing at Two man Game with Lopez. KIKI SHUT THE F UP!!!! YOU ARE NOT A COACH!!! YOU WERE SUPPOSE TO BE A GOOD SHOOTER IN YOUR DAY!!!! TEACH THEM, IDIOT!!!!

i think DH is jealous of Brook.
Brook is the future of this franchise.
DH…… TRADE BAIT!
Devin is a Diva.
DH could have had a 20 20 game. Brook could have scored 45

by djheavyduty on Feb 22, 2010 8:49 PM EST reply actions

NOOO keep Harris! hes finally started to look like himself, aggressive and smart!

Brook might not be one of the greatest to ever live, but he certainly will be a tim duncan like figure throughout the many years of his career. and brook is extremely durable, he doesnt gethurt and hasnt even missed a game his whole net career

by i on Feb 22, 2010 8:52 PM EST reply actions

people are forgetting that Kobe could not go to the playoffs with Butler, Odom, Atkins and Mihm in 2005. Do you think Lopez could save those losers.

by KJV on Feb 22, 2010 8:54 PM EST reply actions

@ SIC
I agree with you. The old proverb say: “You develop appetite by eating.” If you don’t put Brook in the post to pass it out when needed, then how can you ever have player work on knocking down those outside shots.

by KJV on Feb 22, 2010 9:01 PM EST reply actions

“I DO NOT CARE” what anybody has to say about any of the Nets players besides one. Brook Lopez does not deserve any bad mouthing or downplaying from any fan for the rest of his career. He has repeatedly carried this team on his back not missing “ONE” game this entire season and even last year. For anybody to have ANYTHING negative to say about Brook Lopez is completely insane. This guy is the definition of consistent and no matter what #‘s he puts up we still lose. That has nothing to do with Lopez it has something to do with Kiki. Which by the way “I Hate Kiki!” How do you expect us to win games when you have a dominant center and man I don’t know what to call this guy but a Yi next to him. That won’t win us games.

I Hate Kiki!

by Mikee21 on Feb 22, 2010 9:05 PM EST reply actions

Brook doesn’t demand the ball because for one the coach doesn’t make it a focus to get the ball to him.
And Devin; team captain; is not a true point guard. He even admitted he was part of the problem.

by universal on Feb 22, 2010 9:24 PM EST reply actions

A point guard that can consistently break down opposing defenses would solve the problem. I.E. Chris Paul.

by duke on Feb 22, 2010 9:39 PM EST reply actions

@mikee21
Totalllya gree about the points on lopez and kiki. sure, i wanted frank gone, but after you give me this guy id rather have no coach. we gotta get JVG, when you here him announce you can tell he is itching to coach again and shows that he knows how to communicate with players

by i on Feb 22, 2010 9:40 PM EST reply actions

If guys can’t hit open shots,it’s going to be the same way,teams understand that the nets don’t have a power forward who can play that they continue to force-feed yi by thinking he is going to be a star one day when he should not be starting for any team in the nba,Jarvis Hayes can’t hit open shots,the coach has no clue when to bring someone off the bench,he takes someone out of the game when they are on a roll,he just needs to go away and take Yi with him.

If we had Brook with Kidd ,K-mart and company, we would have won that Championship against the Spurs and would have beat Detroit the year after in the Conference Finals. We would not have beaten the Lakers though that first Finals appearance.

by JustinNJ on Feb 23, 2010 7:45 AM EST reply actions

The whole we don’t have shooters thing makes sense. It’s so easy to clog the lane against us to prevent Devin from driving inside and it’s so easy to double team Brook because they don’t have to worry about being punished with open shots from outside. We need to get some knockdown shooters

by muwu on Feb 23, 2010 8:10 AM EST reply actions

@ clk – did u say Hayes cant hit an OPEN shot? You mean when no one is guarding him? Are you sure about that?

This team has shooters, Lee, Hayes, Dooling and to a certain extent CDR and Yi. If you run plays that focus on a two man game with Lopez and anyone of those, u will get several results like give an goes, re-posts, kick outs, and etc… There is no reason or excuse to not focus on this type of offense with the record we have. Development is key and the KEY to this team for the future is Lopez. KIKI needs to realize that. Yi is a bench player. Harris is a SG in a PGs body. Twill is a better PG then Harris.

by SIC on Feb 23, 2010 9:56 AM EST reply actions

It’s interesting that the top centers in the league really don’t have very dominating / aggresive personalities on the court. Although they can be physically aggressive, they don’t seem to have the same intensity that the superstar wings like Kobe and LBJ have.

by mt57 on Feb 23, 2010 10:11 AM EST reply actions

SIC, 100% on point bro.

The excuses for Lopez not receiving the ball in the 4th, when he is flat out our best player is pathetic.

It’s not as if this kid is like Shaq or Dwight Howard and is a liability on the FT line.

Teams are doubling in the post? Pick and roll. Pick and pop. Give and go. You can’t double team a fricking pick and roll play with Harris and Lopez because someone is going to torch you. This is lunacy.

If we had an actual coach on this team and a front office that gave a squat about player development, we wouldn’t have to talk about stupidity like this. This is a national embarrassment.

I’m actually disappointed to hear Keyon say something like that. Harris for his faults, at least said that he should have worked harder. If Brook started screaming at them to give him the ball, people would then declare that he is out of bounds. Any PG with common sense would want to get the ball in that kid’s hands.

It’s not even their fault though. You have that stunt dummy on the sidelines twiddling this thumbs and more worried about punishing a loud mouthed kid than he is ABOUT actually running plays to put his players in a position to achieve success.

And Lopez should already be a pro at passing out of the double teams because that was something he needed to work on last year, but because Rod Thorn wanted to put his personal business ahead of these kids’ development, it will take longer for Brook to step up to where he needs to be.

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Feb 23, 2010 10:23 AM EST reply actions

i disagree that t-will is a better pg than harris but he will be in short time given time on the court…

by jirohkanzaki on Feb 23, 2010 2:09 PM EST reply actions
