Nets Start Strong, Fall Apart in Second Half Against Grizzlies

The Nets dropped to 2-22 in 2010 by blowing an 18-point lead to the Grizzlies at the Izod Center Sunday night. The Nets scored 36 points in the first quarter and led by as many as 18 early in the second. But the Grizzlies slowly climbed back into the game and took control with a 17-0 run that spanned the third and fourth quarters. The Nets threatened a couple of times after that, but never got a chance to tie or get the lead back. Their 36 points in the second half matched their first-quarter total. For the game they had 21 offensive rebounds, but shot 4-21 from 3-point range and turned the ball over 20 times. Brook Lopez had 17 points in the first quarter and finished with 26 points and nine rebounds. Devin Harris added 17 points and 13 assists, but had eight of the 20 turnovers. Rudy Gay led all scorers with 29 points.

I think im done watching this season
No free agent will come here…
Yi Jianlian shot alright but his defense was terrible
Hump has lost his swing
CDR doesnt play
Everytime Brook scores big first quarter he DOES NOTHING SECOND QUARTER. I dont know if the PG’s dont want to feed him because they dont want to hog the ball but if you want to win you got to feed it to the guy who is HOT! OUR STAR!
Kikis excuse today will be?

4-21 from 3pt range and 4 attempts for Brook in the second half shows that Kiki isn’t guiding the team where their strength is.
At least Yi played decent.
Devin had waaay too many turnovers but he was playing well in the first half with double digit assists.
Oh well… 9 wins are looking harder and harder to get..
by supreme on Feb 21, 2010 8:44 PM EST reply actions
Kiki should make a rule.. if you shoot more than 2 3 pointers, you are automatically benched, and if T.Will even tries one, he should be benched.
All in all, a good 1st half (mainly 1st quarter) that all ended with the way NJ came out in the 3rd. Believe it or not, I was actually hoping to see Hassell. At least he could have defended Mayo or Gay, and knows not to shoot the 3, or at all, unless he is wide open.

It is clearly obvious that Kiki Vanderslaw is not a capable coach…
The Nets were so dominant in the fist quarter feeding Lopez and Humph and then they became a jump shooting team…
Kiki needs to go

its weird how us , the fans, know what is best for the team (firing kiki) meanwhile the people in charge of the organization and team seem clueless
lmao its too funny watching how bad this team really is, and what gets me even more pissed off is that the knicks are starting to make moves and now have more money to spend this offseason.
what are you bums in charge waiting for !?!?!?!?!?!? ITS NOT THAT HARD TO FIRE KIKI, CMON NOW

Sorry guys… I am now done for the rest of the season. I don’t understand how a team can go from leading 18 at one point to losing by double digits. Brook was dominating in the first half, and really didn’t get that many touches during the 2nd half, especially the 4th quarter.
Devin played great during the first half, but played horribly with too many turnovers, and those ridiculous 3 pointers… he really should stop shooting it when he’s shooting at such a low percentage.
As for everyone else… they all played horrible. Yi couldn’t defend if his life depends on it, and everyone else can’t shoot or pass the damn ball.
It’s just too frustrating to watch the Nets play right now. I have watched every single game this season up til now… tonight will be my last one, because I simply just can’t watch them anymore. It’s like they don’t even care that they are losing anymore, they just gave up. If they don’t care about giving effort and winning… then why should the fans care about them.
Until I see any serious changes from the top all the way down to the bottom, I wont be watching any more games this season.

1) Fire Kiki
2) Hire Fratello or Loyer
3) Release Simmons, Battie, Hassell
4) Sign the three best D-Leaguers currently available.
5) Hope our new coach plays CDR and makes Lopez the focus of the offense for more than 16 minutes.

I loved the Czar tonight. “This team has no right taking so many 3 pointers.”
TWill makes some mistakes, but I love his energy. As he matures as a player, I think he’ll be a good asset to this team. And I love seeing Humphries fight for those rebounds. It’s when those high energy guys are in I enjoy watching the Nets (and the only time.)

will not get us any more than 25-30 wins as I see it. So there is really NO chance we will make the playoffs next year. We have to hope I guess to land Melo or a big name in 2011, which will NEVER happen.
Prokhorov, new coach, new players, new arena, its all bull. This team wont be record breakingly awful the next few seasons, but they’re not going to be a playoff team for at least the next 5 or 6 seasons.

This was the most disheartening loss of the season…by far.
Can anyone explain to me how Brook goes off in the 1st quarter with Devin continually feeding him the ball? Devin had 7 assists in the 1st quarter and Brook had 17 points. Best quarter as a team of the season.
So as clearly should happen – the Nets got away from feeding Brook the ball down low and ended up hoisting 19 3 pointers (they hit on 16% of them).
I don’t understand how the players (Devin, Lee) can start chucking up 3s instead of looking for Brook, how Brook doesn’t demand the ball and more importantly how the coaching staff doesn’t have a heart attack watching this happen.
Please can someone other than Mike Fratello explain this to me? He clearly GETS it…yet of course is not on the “short” list of coaching candidates. Brilliant.
I honestly think this is my last post until the draft tonight – as this loss has zapped all my spirit in watching this team.

Doesn’t keep B Lopez involved after 22pts in 1st Half?! And what was Hayes giving the team before his injury? The Nets came out with a lot of energy tonight. This probably runs against the grain but I think they looked well prepared. A couple of things changed in the second half. First, they looked like they left their energy in the locker room. Second, I think the Grizz packed into the paint more on defense. That made Lopez less effective and cut off the slashers. The Nets have no shooters to make a team pay for that. I blame Thorn.

Jarvis Hayes scored 2 points? No, don’t ever pick up a scorer from D-League!
LAST NIGHT IN D-LEAGUE
REGGIE WILLIAMS—didn’t play
ALEXANDER JOHNSON—didn’t play
MIKE HARRIS—16 points (8-17), 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 blocks.
DWAYNE JONES—26 points (10-17), 26 rebounds (12 offensive), 2 blocks, 1 steal, 1 assist.
Mike Harris had an off-game after dropping 30 points the night before, but his team won easily. He’s much better than Jarvis Hayes.
Dwayne Jones is just a rebounding monster. This is his second straight game of at least 20 boards. Imagine a power forward like that!
For those wondering about Alexander Johnson, he had about two NBA seasons as a deep backup. He’s only played 10 D-league games this year. If there’s a knock, it’s that he might be 6’8" and not 6’9", although he has an amazing vertical leap. See http://cache.nba.com/dleague/players/.
There’s an open spot on the roster and some dead wood (Tony Battie), but the Nets still do nothing.
by Barry Popik on Feb 21, 2010 9:58 PM EST reply actions
Dwayne Jones could contribute close to 10-10 per game if he played for the Nets as starting powerforward.Whats his “D” like? He can grab boards but could he cause trouble for the good powerforwards in this league?

Dwayne Jones played all the D in college at St. Joseph’s, where he played with Jameer Nelson and Delonte West and averaged 11+ rebounds.
The point is here’s a solid big who can rebound and won’t hurt your salary cap. You need guys like that.
Much better than Jamie Feick, if anyone remembers him. Feick could rebound, but wasn’t mobile and really couldn’t play a lick of defense or offense.

I was at the game and Kiki’s lack of INTERACTION is inexcusable. He sat on the bench more than I sat in my seat. ANYONE would have done a better job and won that game. There may be no motivation, but letting all those young players go without guidance is going to kill the development of the few pieces we should be keeping for the next few years.

It’d be really nice to have a power forward who could defend. At this point I wouldn’t even care if he only scored 3 points a night, as long as every power forward in the league with a pulse couldn’t go for 20 & 10 on him.

by Gina on Feb 21, 2010 11:12 PM EST reply actions
“After reading comments here I don’t understand why Lee is getting a free pass here.”
He shouldn’t be. Yi is an 8th man on average NBA team, Lee is more like a 10th or 11th man – the only real action he should be seeing is in practice. The scouting that either was or was not done on him was a complete failure. Trading a perennial all-star that still has another solid 2-3 years in his tank for a scrub like this is simply inexcusable and shows how little interest this management group had in even putting a competitive product on the floor.

Btw. VC made two smart plays in crunch time to lead the Magic over the Cavs today. He drew the defense toward him and found Howard under the rim for two and also attacked the defense and found Lewis in the corner for a dagger three. The knowledge of how to win left with Kidd and Carter.

Fratello for coach, Mark jackson or Ewing as assistants. One of the new players next year has to be a rebounding “monster”, one needs to be a “shooter” and one has to be a “d” specialist who has at least some offensive talent. Please lose Yi, TWill, and TweetDr

by i on Feb 21, 2010 11:36 PM EST reply actions
Memphis did a good job of making it really hard to get the ball to Lopez in the second half. Its not like the nets were like, “yeah, Lopez killed them in the first half when we got him the ball, lets NOT do that anymore”. They would try to get him the ball and turn it over a few times and then be afraid to do it more. Most of the second half posessions looked like: Lopez post up, good positioning by memphis, Nets going plan B with Lopez/Boone/Whoever pick and roll, well defended by memphis, post up again, well defended, pick and roll again, nothing happens, etc., until there’s 5 seconds left on the shot clock and the nets either force a 3 or a reckless drive into the crowded paint.
Having said that, the fact that Memphis simply made an effort to deny Lopez the ball, and had good pick and roll defense, and as a result of these two things were able to completely shut down our offense, is disheartening and pathetic. I would (like to) think under a better coach things would be different.

The VC trade was a good one. VC didn’t show up until the 4th qtr today. I’m glad we traded him. Better a year before than a year after. Mark Jackson and JVG were killing him for blending in and being average. And Ryan Anderson didn’t leave the bench. Frank has to get some credit for getting as many wins as he did out of this team last year. Most coudn’t start on most NBA teams.

@ robby, we got cap space, for all those free agents who will be lining up to sign with a 5 win team. And if we get the #1 pick we can say we got John Wall for it. I really wouldn’t have a problem if they came out and said their plan was to be as bad as possible for multiple years to get multiple lottery picks and have a turn around like Portland/OKC have had.

Courtney Lee is a good player. No one mentions on here that he played last season in Orlando and had so much more room to operate. I understand he hasn’t performed up to that level this season but we don’t have Dwight Howard and a plethora of 3 point shooters. Lee also has value as a defensive player.
I also remember people on here last year saying “we should draft courtney lee”
Lee is the last guy to sell low on. If we get a legitimate stud in here next year to take the pressure off, Lee would thrive in more of a jump shooting and attack-off-help scenario.

good balance of minutes for all our “reserve” big men, yi, boone and hump (around 20 mins each)

by jirohkanzaki on Feb 22, 2010 12:39 AM EST reply actions
This game was lost when KIKI took out Humphries and put in YI, it was no coincidence that we made our run with him on the bench. We weren’t shooting lights out but we were getting a lot of offensive rebounds by Humphries, and others. The physicality and energy picked up when him and Boone were on the floor along with Lopez. I don’t mea to pick on YI but the kid is lost defensively, yeah he shot well today, but it you look at the flow of the game it was kind of token shots because he would miss rebounds forget to box out, or even help defend. He really needs to come off the bench if anything.
Ohh yeah and CDR’s contract will be picked up, and he will be with this team next year playing productive minutes. The problem is the coach he just doesn’t know what he is doing and is killing the spirit and souls of our young players lol.
