Loughery Knows Nets Highs and Lows

The year before the New York Nets hired him as their coach in 1974, Kevin Loughery had played on--and coached--the worst team in NBA history...so far. The 1972-73 Sixers were so bad Loughery retired as a player when the season ended. Then, with the Nets, he won two ABA titles. Fred Kerber caught up with him to talk about that year and compare them to the current Nets.

this shows how over rated coaching is. this guy won 5 games coaching out the rest of the season and when he came to the nets he wins 2 ABA championships. Mostly depends on talent and team chemistry

Talent yes, but coaches hafta use it in a way that’s best for the entire team. Which also ties to chemistry. Can’t say that Kiki is helping talent or chemistry by anchoring CDR to the bench and stuffing Yikes down our throats. OTOH, didn’t think Frank was maximizing talent and keeping everyone happy w/his constant VC iso’s in 05-06-07.

From what I guess (this is before my time) Loughery had it easier. Best player on earth built with a support cast that all knew their roles. Piecing together a playoffs team in ’79 tho mighta been a better coaching accomplishment.

Gotta say too, love those stars-n-stripes unees! No matter where the Nets play in the future I wish they’d bring those back!

“this shows how over rated coaching is”

Not true. First off if you look at the list of NBA Championship coaches there are very, very few that aren’t considered outstanding coaches. Secondly you can have talent but still not find a way to get too far with it – take a guy like Flip Saunders for example.

In basketball you aren’t going to get to the top without superstars but to even have a team that can considtently win 50 games in this league you need very solid coach like a Sloan Adelman, Carlisle or Karl.
