Brett's Long-Term Bet

While he keeps chasing the next marketing rainbow, Brett Yormark knows that what's underfoot now is quite messy. In an interview with Newsday, he admits things have been "challenging". He's still pushing Chinese Culture Night (Sunday) and Jewish Family Night (March 24 vs. the Kings and Omri Casspi) and trying to sell whatever he can now. But he understands selling the future in Brooklyn is still priority No. 1.

He wouldn’t have to throw any of these plays if his organization spent some money on a star or two.

The Nets are a joke, Ratner ran them into the ground cause hez a cheap RE developer who can’t develop well. Brooklyn, LI is not going to come out any more then N/Central NJ unless they give away the tickets like they do now. And you can’t even see most of the stars on other teams play in the swamp, since they view it as a optional vacation day against 5-50, Nets. Even your opposing back 5 players can play the defense-less Nets. And they play the Music so loud in a half empty arena…it’s a joke, and I am a joke for going on a regular basis…one positive, easy to get out of the parking lot with so few attendees and a night away from the wife…;)

“He’s still pushing Chinese Culture Night (Sunday) and Jewish Family Night (vs. the Kings and Omri Casspi)”

In other words, more ethnic marketing. This is about as insulting a marketing program as one could devise. “Come out and root for somebody who looks kinda like you” is the theory.

How about, “Come out and root for a team with talent and that works together, even if they don’t look like you?” Can we please have a night like that soon.

Hey here’s an idea Brett,
why not get rid of everyone on the team who is not on a rookie contract,
replace them with player who are on rookie contracts,
the team salery would be at like 6mill,
then we can take the rest of the money we save and hire some circus acts and some zoo animals to distract the fans while our team is getting raped on the court.
Who needs good basketball when your providing entertainment for the whole family.

Boy that marketing degree is being utilized.

Dear Brett,

I got a great idea that’ll pack’em in. Call it “Dunk a Net”

We sit you, Ratner, Kiki, Thorn in those carnival water-dunk seats. Every time the opponent scores a point, one of you gets dunked in the water.

Sincerely,
Every Nets Fan

The NEXT marketing rainbow???

Aside from those cheap, ridiculously insulting, and quite embarrassing reversible jersies, did I miss something??? Would love to be in the room when Proky, Olympic biatholon rifle in hand, grabs Yormark to go over his track record!

by BrooklynJohnny on Feb 20, 2010 12:09 PM EST reply actions

I’m hope Proky sees right through this clown Yormark with his foolish gimmicks and fires his on day 1. These marketing ploys are really embarrassing.

@BrooklynJohnny
You do know “chasing a rainbow” is futile?

by Net Income on Feb 20, 2010 12:27 PM EST reply actions

A jerk with zero credibility. I’d like to see him replaced with someone honest before the big move to Brooklyn. Maybe Jerseyites buy his crap, but Brooklynites never will. I grew up on Brigham and W and went four times a year to the dentist at One Hanson Place. If you know where those places are, then you know Brooklyn and you know that Yormark is a jerk.

by Paul Erstein on Feb 20, 2010 12:59 PM EST reply actions

I don’t like Yormark either but maybe if there was a solid product on the floor he wouldn’t have to resort to these god awful gimmicks

by Mr Dollar Bills on Feb 20, 2010 1:06 PM EST reply actions

Yormark “marketing rainbows” would embarrass a Single A minor-league baseball team.

by Reality Check on Feb 20, 2010 1:58 PM EST reply actions

NI,
Can you tell us what a Nets CEO does … as distinct from Rod and as distinct from Ratner. Is Mr. Yormark primarily responsible for marketing, which is what comes across mostly in these articles?
Thanks.

What a joke! I am half German. Lets have a German night when Dirk and the Mavericks come to town.

by JustinNJ on Feb 20, 2010 4:41 PM EST reply actions

By all accounts, I am American. Born and raised. Why are we celebrating and singling out one nationality or religion? Yi is one player on this team and one that most fans don’t even want to see on this team anymore. This marketing guy is piss poor! THE GOAL IS TO MARKET THE NEW JERSEY NETS! Find pride in marketing the team we cheer for and the one you work for! Help make this team one in which we can be proud of to say we follow, not one that is a laughing stock to the rest of the league.

Well said. Nothing that greasy used car salesman Yormark can do to change that either.

by Isaac on Feb 20, 2010 4:59 PM EST reply actions

at JustinNJ:

you know darn well Yormark hasn’t marketed “New Jersey” since the day he was unfortunately brought back to work for this team (he was there during the ’90s too as a VP of sponsor sales).

In fact Yormark will market just about ANYTHING except New Jersey. He is a a cog in the overall Ratner spin cycle machine. Never in my lifetime have I seen a sports commisioner allow one of his teams to be bought by someone who openly was using one of his franchises to make a real estate killing with no regard for the team itself – especially when the plan had so many flaws we have all lost count by now.

It’s sad and depressing but don’t expect anything to change just because they are in a newer arena starting next year – they are just going to pretend that arena is on the other side of the river and continue to treat the longtime Jersey fans like us (even this one from Brooklyn) like utter trash.

by Isaac on Feb 20, 2010 6:11 PM EST reply actions

I’m Chinese-American and I find Chinese Culture Night pathetic and insulting. Yormark still doesn’t understand why the NY area Chinese community is indifferent to the Nets and his gimmicky promotions.

Chinese Culture Night does NOT interest the NYC Chinese community one bit. If anything, such a pathetic ploy would ALIENATE teenage Chinese-American fans.

Putting Yi out there in position to fail (which he does almost nightly) does not attract the Chinese-American (or China) fan base. No one wants to celebrate a loser (failed athlete). When you start Yi and force-feed him minutes, he shoots 30% and that makes it IMPOSSIBLE for the Chinese to root for Yi.

Its gotten so bad that Yi’s Chinese fans want him traded out of this losing situation to another team.

by JohnY on Feb 20, 2010 6:33 PM EST reply actions

@JohnY

Force feed him minutes? Thats the first time I’ve seen a fan complain about somone they like getting minutes assuming thats what you getting at. I’m know fan of whats been going on but Yi has been given every oppurtunity to suceed. If he plays badly its because he just not a good player and has the basketball IQ of an onion. Fans want him traded that ok he can stink it up somewhere else.

I will note I’m not an Yi hater and hope he suceeds. So if he turned it around I’ll be happy but while trying to give Yi the benefit of the doubt I find it hard to know if we’ve got anything in him at all.

by Shea23 on Feb 20, 2010 7:51 PM EST reply actions

I believe that JohnY is saying that the Nets should bring him off the bench until he gains some confidence in his game…..But the Nets are forcefeeding Yi to the chinese fans……I agree with John and I’d rather see Yi come off the bench and score a few baskets….The nets have him in a make it big or Bust situation….Maybe it’s too much pressure for him…..He is basically a Rookie you know…..

So what happens if Brooklyn falls through? Does the entire house of cards just come tumbling down?

by Gina on Feb 21, 2010 1:32 AM EST reply actions

Gina if Brooklyn falls through you can kiss Proky goodbye, (only takes over ownership if BK happens) which in turn means the Nets have zero dollars to spend on FA’s, and they go through the process of being sold again thus speculation on new locations should no NJ group buy the Nets…I doubt that will happen however, there may be a business man out there who wants to keep them in Newark

just my opinion
