Nets Lose Late to Pistons

Devin Harris played perhaps his best game of the season, but his last-minute three-point attempt to tie Tuesday's game against the Pistons was well short. As a result, the Nets lost their third straight game by four points or less. Harris scored 24 points and handed out 14 assists, Brook Lopez led the Nets with 27 points, and Kris Humphries just missed a double-double, grabbing 12 boards and scoring nine. Courtney Lee had a hot hand and finished with 15 points and three steals. Yi Jianlian, on the other hand, had his worst game, going 1-12 and scoring only three points. Harris returned to the lineup after a four-game absence and had 12 points and eight assists by halftime, as the Nets scored 29 points in the first quarter and led by as many as seven in the second. But the Pistons outscored them 28-19 in the third to take the lead. From that point, it was back-and-forth until Tayshaun Prince dunked over Jarvis Hayes on a perfectly played inbound pass. Rip Hamilton had 22 and Rodney Stuckey 21 for Detroit.

Devin is BACK!
Devin is better than John Wall tonight (LOL).

Nets and Yi made too many mistakes earlier in the game. Should have been up by 10 pts. at the time of Devin’s rushed shot.

Great game by Harris until he decided to lose the game for us. He needs a shock color that zaps him everytime he thinks about taking a bad shot. Another fantastic game for Yi!!!!!!! 1-12! many of the misses coming at point blank range! woooh!

Disappointing loss after disappointing loss

The Nets played hard, they played well, and played with energy for the most part but Detroit was too much for the nets to handle at the end.

Harris played well but severely hurt the nets as he took too many ill advised shots and play some bad D at times. Hamilton abused us at the end. This team needs a perimeter defensive stopper.
Yi was a lot more aggressive today yet still just so bad! He attacked and then did nothing. He did play some good D (kinda) though
Lopez was a monster on the inside! I appreciate his play as well Devin’s but Brook was just simply outstanding. Getting it done on both ends. Harris sort of fell apart towards the end, could not execute successfully.

i thought devin played very well but when he chucked up that 3 pointer from NY he is THE SAME OLD DEVIN UGHHH. Also Yi needs to be benched he will never be good, humphries is so much better he should start. cdr just sucks, lee is ok on some night, lopez and hayes are great! So 4 game road trip coming up, i guess that mean 4 more loses FML!

Devin Harris played offensively like he played the first 2 months of last year. Wow. Unfortunately for the Nets, Harris played defensively like he’s played all of this year – terribly. He was repeatedly beaten down the stretch of the game, and – as Fratello brilliantly telestrated – the Prince dunk off the inbounds play was 100% Harris’s fault.

Don’t want to get sick talking about another blown game.

Would rather look at the positive – like Thorn will try even harder and harder to make a good pre-deadline trade if he wants Nets to avoid infamy.

Unfortunately, Yi must be putting Vaseline on his hands and arms so that no team will take him! 1/12, 4 turnovers and couldn’t even finish a dunk with the ball under the basket.

by jerry25 on Feb 2, 2010 10:16 PM EST reply actions

@Ben i so agree. Yi played terribly and CDR played uninspired. And i have been seeing alot of terrible and unispired play from these two.

Can I just say that Yi has some of the worst hands of any player. I can’t count how many times I’ve seen Yi stripped effortlessly by the defense or Ian Eagle say “Yi misses from POINT BLANK range”…

and Harris…man from runner up to “shot of the year” to “down right worst non-clutch shot of the year”

Kiki’s system of accountability is really ##’d up. If any other player besides Yi had performed like he did today, that player would be shoveled to the the bench instantly(see CDR). What a great way to lose the players. And did CDR forget something called off-ball movement?? Comon CDR…

@Danny Brook took 1 jumper as the game was winding down that he missed. He took another one and he made it. I don;t think that was the problem. The problem was that brook was getting bothered by the smaller detroit pistons and he turned the ball over 3 times. Otherwise i thought he looked good and played solid defense.

by Sparklespice on Feb 2, 2010 10:23 PM EST reply actions

@Tom F i would love The Czar to take over this team. Yeah Harris did take some ill advised shots but he got us back into the game 4 times down the floor in a row. The whole 4th quarter he killed it. Anyone notice how many assists he had also? He was real good tonight. He was the reason we were in the damn game. Unfortunate that Keyon couldn’t play tonight bc his defense was needed for sure. Anyway I watched 4 games in a row down to the wire which is rare for the nets. I usually turn it off in the 4th quarter because we are down by 20. Lets trade Yi, CDR, Whoever else and dalls pick for Amare please. Resign Amare to some good money. AT WORST our lineup will be
Devin, Lee, Hayes, Amare and Brook w/ Hump, Twill, Jarvis off the bench PLUS a top 4 draft pick. That team could make the playoffs. Brook one day will be a guy who can carry a team on his own. Lets go nets fans enough of this negativity everyday.

You can post about your trade until your fingers turn blue. Next year’s starting lineup is Harris, Lopez, Yi, and two upgrades. As they used to say on Hawaii 50 – “Bookit Danno”

…reddick is playin some great ball over there…tons of teams want him

by NJQuestCat on Feb 2, 2010 10:25 PM EST reply actions

NO Amare! Nets Insider already nixed the Amare idea.

However, the good news for anyone not watching the KY game is that Demarcus Cousins is now a definite top 4 pick, other than his attitude questions.

Announcers said Cousins could be drafted 2nd to Wall, even before his dominating performance. (I disagree because Turner is the most sure thing at this time).
Cousins has been more of a positive factor than Wall for at least 5 straight games for KY!

Cousins is like the young (but bulkier at 275) Amare and a better defender.

Question is could Demarcus exist along side BLopez. Brook may play the PF role, but Demarcus could defend anyone.

However, in no way could I see Demarcus getting along with Yi without starting a fight. He was demanding the ball (immediately) in tonight’s game.

With Nets having a 36% chance to get the #4 pick, taking Cousins would mean the free agency would have to go in a different direction from getting DLee.

by jerry25 on Feb 2, 2010 10:26 PM EST reply actions

Yeah Cousins has been very impressive..

His footwork drivin in is real nice. I’d like to see him finish stronger more often though…

Ryan Anderson would be perfect as a role player for the Nets next year as their shooting PF, to complement Hump and DLee/Cousins.

Boy did Thorn blow the Carter trade – if only Yi instead of Ryan, then Nets would have about 10 wins now. I would even give a future 2nd round pick along with Yi, to get Ryan back.

by jerry25 on Feb 2, 2010 10:31 PM EST reply actions

There was no reason, no good god damn reason why Yi played as many minutes as he did. This guy flat out sucks. I was supportive of Yi early this season when the tin man had some heart, but now he is just flat out trash. A SOFT, 7 foot useless sack of garbage.

CDR made the most of his minutes tonight. This guy here, oh boy. He looked like he did not give a rat. This kid has completely mailed it in and frankly i’m disgusted. Thorn needs to find a taker for him in a deal or someone needs to let him have it because his effort tonight was pitiful. He just doesn’t deserve to play at this point. They should test his chin a bit and hit him with a few DNP’s like they did to T-Will and lets see if his attitude changes. His body language, energy, everything just sucked.

Harris’ was awful in the last 3-4 mins of that game. He played well for the most part, he was energetic and was making some decent passes but as usual, his lack of discipline and basketball IQ pissed all of that away when it counts. He’s a bum, and other than that block he had on the swedish dude, his defense was GARBAGE.

Yi, CDR, and Harris all need to be flipped for something better

Lee had a good game offensively and was hustling on d. If Lee would do this 4 out of 5 nights I would have no problem with him

Anyone able to see the Syracuse game?

Apparently, Wesley Johnson had another good game, but the highlight was leaping fall, which left him uninjured fortunately.

Pending Cousin’s attitude problem (similar to KMart), WJohnson or someone else is the remaining homework assignment for the Nets first pick. (after Turner and Wall)

KY has 2 or 3 other players that the two Scouts could be evaluating for consideration for the Nets other 2 draft picks.

2. Yi sucks. He sucks not because he can’t shoot, which he can, he sucks because he has THE WORST HANDS i’ve seen since keith van horn AND he’s insanely soft, i’ve heard enough about his aggressiveness.

3. Harris played very well tonight but that last shot was extremely poor.

Sorry about being realistic. Actually, I am a strong Nets fan. Management’s plan could work, sort of. If you surround Yi with upgrades, he can linger at 15-20 foot and make open jumpers. Then, the upgrades can cover for his “defense.” It really won’t be so bad if the upgrades for CDR, Lee, and T-Will are for real.

Wes Johnson > Evan Turner

by JayMS on Feb 2, 2010 10:57 PM EST reply actions

The only thing that Yi is better than Ryan at, is his “length” advantage, that gets an occasional block or intimidation (and Ryan is probably almost 4 years younger than Yi).

People say that Harris would want to leave if the Nets took Avery Johnson as coach. O disagree. IMO, Harris would be more upset if Nets traded for someone like Iggy. AI#2 would become the team leader, and he doesn’t appear to have lots of respect for Devin. That would be a problem.

by jerry25 on Feb 2, 2010 10:57 PM EST reply actions

@djheavyduty:

Turner is averaging 10 RPG as a PG! Yes, Johnson may be better at multiple jumping under the basket, and may be stronger than Turner, but Evan is a natural outside shooter, better passer. Turner is more complete and a Sure Thing. He can play 1 2 or 3, whereas Wesley is only a SF who plays like a quick PF.

Wish they would show more Ohio State games. I would like to watch them more, so welcome other comments.

As much as I think Turner will be an all star caliber player in this league and perhaps our pick if we do not get lucky with the first pick, we still could not pass on John Wall. Wall is exactly what we need! A true point guard who makes everyone better and one that can also take over a game offensively need be. He would be our better scoring, more athletic Jason Kidd. I would move Devin over to the 2 if he is still with us. We can still also pickup a free agent for one of the forward positions, regardless, if we can’t get one of the max guys.

Attended the game tonight and it was depressing on so many levels. Hadn’t been there since the Dallas game when there was a shred of hope as Lawrence was finally on his way out. Things have gotten so much worse across the board since then. Any remaining atmosphere at my beloved Meadowlands is gone – they barely have any souvenirs left to sell!! Was hoping to get something bearing the words “New Jersey” on it but very little (if anything left) in that regard. The shelves were barely stocked and it was truly a ghost town. I am still astonished even 7 or 8 thousand are showing up to support Ratner’s cause at this point.

The team redefines atrocious. The Pistons, other than the late spurt by Rip were BEGGING to get beaten and the Nets somehow let them off the hook. Yi is hideous – absolutely awful!!! He was the main reason we couldn’t compete last year and he is one of the main reasons we are now headed to the worst record in league history. I would rather see ANYONE out there other than him. For goodness sake, Josh Boone definitely deserves minutes over this bum – at least he tries!!! Just an awful and saddening night as New Jersey Nets Basketball continues to fade into the sunset.

The fact that this team is likely to win 7 or 8 games is an absolute disgrace and if we weren’t completely bashing management for giving us this utter train wreck, we wouldn’t have a pulse as a sports fan.

His body language and overall temperament on the floor is often very poor, looking somewhat lazy and disinterested and at times downright selfish. He’s clearly not the smartest guy you’ll find on or off the court, and he already tends to react very poorly to different situations on the floor and lose his temper in concerning fashion. ". I blame the coach 100% on this. We lost the lead because everyone chucked up a shot wanting to be a hero. The coach should have dug it into their heads what to do. Yi makes my day. Like watching a hackneyed horror movie, you know exactly what’s gonna happen next, and it unfolds just as you predict. Oh, good times.

On that Detroit inbounds under the basket, when Prince caught it and dunked: were the Nets the only ones not EXPECTING them to try that? Before the ball was inbounded I just watched the empty space under the basket, saw Prince step into it and dunk. That was the dagger.

I wonder if Brian Hill drew that up, knowing how the hapless Nets would defend the inbound? Has anyone noticed how often “hapless” is used in the print media before the word “Nets”? Next year we have to get some “hap”!

“I thought Courtney Lee also had a nice all-around performance, finishing with 15 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals. He was 3-4 from three pointers, his one miss coming with less than a minute to go. But I thought he was very active on the defensive end, doing the best you can do against a guy like Rip Hamilton who just moves so well without the ball. There seems to be a lot of hand-wringing over the benching of Chris Douglas-Roberts with some fans asking why CDR got demoted over Courtney Lee. I honestly think it’s games like last night’s that keep Courtney in the coaching staff’s good graces. He very quietly does a lot of little things that help the team win.”

And people wanna say CDR’s not scoring because Yi’s getting everything when jarvis hayes replaces him and gets to put up 10 shots?

Should have traded Yi two weeks ago when people thought he was a good player. Boy has he shrunk into nothing. He is such a soft player. Who would take him now? Biggest problem we have (besides having a bunch of role players and no PF or SF) is we have no one at the end of a game to sink a basket or step up and make a shot or get a big charge or rebound. They used Hamilton so effectively. We have Lopez and harris, but they are not go to guys yet.

This isn’t fantasy basketball, the season is veryyy long. And we’ve already picked up Yi’s option so he’s under contract for next year as well. Plenty of time and interest won’t fade that fast. GM’s won’t be interested in Yi to make him a superstar, they’re out for him to be a complementary piece.

No way do we get rid of Yi, CDR, Lee, Harris or T-Will unless it improves our team. These players are not AS BAD AS THEY LOOK NOW. Put Yi on a better team and he would probably fit right in. Same goes for the rest. Our players have not learned to play as a team. Five individuals out there with five different games and agendas.

Mmm cheeseburger. Can we sell some nets players to mcdonalds for a season of free food? That’ll sell out the arena

oh yeah btw CDR is done and he is begging for a trade. its sad cause i rather him lose then win rigt now cause once he gets traded of course the team that trades for him is gonna be better then us. hes gonna play better and its not fair to the nets. so let him lose who cares about him dont do a him. dont do him a favors by trading him to a playoff team.

What if we throw in half of our assets for Iggy? Something like Courtney Lee, CDR, Yi, Battie for Iguoadala and take back Brezec and Jason Smith with him.

THEN we throw the other of our assets at Indiana for Danny Granger. Terrence Williams, and I’m talking BOTH of our first round picks, yes even our first one for Mr. Granger.

Harris
Iguodala
Granger
________
Lopez

Fill in that blank with pretty much anyone who can get us 10+ boards a game and play some defense and we’re set.

@Dirt;

Sounds good, but if we get rid of Lee, Yi and CDR, who’s going to be are whipping boy? Harris? He’s no fun to pick on cause he couldn’t care less.

there was one source that led to this loss, its one word two letters…. YI. International Garbageeee

by oktay on Feb 3, 2010 1:40 PM EST reply actions

Lee needs to play like that every night. He was very active last night though. It seems like his defense gets even more intense when he is hitting shots.

How does one lose a game when you have a team over the foul limit with about 5 minutes lefts in the game? And you’re ahead.

by Ely on Feb 3, 2010 3:49 PM EST reply actions

Gosh, damn you Devin for not playing the perfect game! Let’s all pile on Devin again and demand a trade!
