Lineup Change Could Help in More Ways Than One

Jarvis Hayes will get his first start of the season Tuesday night against the Pistons, with the idea that he can give the Nets' first unit more defense and shooting. Chris Douglas-Roberts will come off the bench, with the idea that he can be more aggressive with the second unit. CDR wasn't sure how it will play out, but both say they just want to help the team win. Devin Harris is playing. Keyon Dooling isn't.

I (along with everyone else who knows anything about basketball…) have been saying all year CDR would produce better off the bench. About time

Alright Jarvis! Let the Silky smooth jump shots reign down!

Good move. Too many guys in the starting unit who are “shot first”. The game only presents one basketball folks.

Why does Lee keep getting a free pass? Lee and Yi, Kiki’s boys, they can do no wrong. Time for Proky to clean those 3 out.
by Tom F on Feb 2, 2010 3:17 PM EST reply actions
I have a feeling that Lee and Yi are good soldiers who do what they are told and are low maintenance. CDR and T-Will are high maintenance. Kiki does not need the headaches or headcases. LOL

Jarvis should have been the starter from day one, too bad he was injured. He should share the 3 with TWill. I like TWill at the 3 for rebounding and passing, Jarvis for shooting. Let CDR and Lee battle it out and share their role like Kittles and Harris. Up until the last couple of games, I would have put CDR ahead, now, Lee is pulling ahead.

This is awesome and what should have happened from the get go. This is a real second unit, not some second unit stocked with expiring contracts and filler put on display for the purpose of trading them.
Harris-Dooling-Quinn
Lee-CDR-Hassell
Hayes-TWill-Simmons
Yi-Humphries
Lopez-Boone-Battie

i like the idea of cdr coming off the bench. its like the spurs wit manu. we should do the same. cdr goes at the basket and always puts his body on the line. so making him come off the bench makes alot of sense.
by tu vieja on Feb 2, 2010 3:38 PM EST reply actions
I have been saying it all year.
J.Hayes should start when healthy.
Were I do disagree is having Roberts go to the bench.
He should be starting at the two and C.Lee should go to the bench.
by Dziedzic on Feb 2, 2010 3:47 PM EST reply actions
Alright! now we have 3 guys who can spread the floor. expect more pick and roll between lopez + dooling
by newbreed on Feb 2, 2010 3:49 PM EST reply actions
CDR is like a mini-Vince. He needs the ball in his hands to break down defenders. Scoring is his first priority. He can be the man on the 2nd unit. He won’t have to defer to the primary scores BL, DH & Yi.
Defensively, he might have an easier time staying in front of the oppositions 2nd unit player.
Judging by his body language and facial expressions last game, he will be happy not to be in the same unit with Yi, the human turnover reel.
by John at the Jersey Shore on Feb 2, 2010 3:51 PM EST reply actions
Jarvis Hayes plays like an old man. Maybe he will put to sleep the opposition. LOL
by Mike on Feb 2, 2010 4:04 PM EST reply actions
If Jarvis can shoot from the perimeter the way he did last year, I think this is going to help the Nets notch a few more wins this season than what they would have managed with the status quo. And unless he’s having a super hot game, I can’t see Jarvis logging any more than 25 minutes a night, which will give TWill and CDR ample opportunity to present a change of pace off the bench. Jarvis just provides a completely different look on both ends of the floor and could be the answer the Nets need when teams just relentlessly go into a zone defense on them.
by Mark Ginocchio on Feb 2, 2010 4:05 PM EST reply actions
This will definately help Brook in the post.
by Whoop dee damn doo on Feb 2, 2010 4:20 PM EST reply actions
CDR just takes up space on the floor unless he’s got the ball trying to drive. Useless off-the-ball offensively (and selfish).
Can we get KKittles to mentor this guy?
by Whoop dee damn doo on Feb 2, 2010 4:22 PM EST reply actions
This is the best piece of coaching that twit Kiki has done since he was tossed on his sword by Thorn.
Jarvis will provide better shooting out there and he’s better at being an SF than CDR, who is a natural two.
Now CDR can get back into the groove of being a scorer. The only thing that can mess this up for the team is if he starts to sulk. He will excel at this role if he stays aggressive. A second unit of CDR, T-Will as the playmaker, and The Hump as the energy man will provide good results.
I support this move.
by Mr. Dollar Bills on Feb 2, 2010 4:24 PM EST reply actions
The more I think about this, I just don’t like it.
CDR never got a shot playing his natural position SG
Can CLee play SF?
NO!
Jarvis can start all he wants, but give CDR a shot at his natural spot.
CDR has been guarding Pierce, Lebron, and other bigger SFs all year, but CLee is marginal playing guys his size.
by djheavyduty on Feb 2, 2010 4:25 PM EST reply actions
Up until last game, the Nets were much worse offensively and defensively with Jarvis at the 3. Unless he continues to shoot well, this wont work very well.
by Antoine on Feb 2, 2010 4:30 PM EST reply actions
1st unit
sf – hayes
sg – lee
pg – dooling
2nd unit
sf – hassell
sg – cdr
pg – t-will

i want hassell starting. well get rolling on defense and have an outstanding bench
by i on Feb 2, 2010 4:49 PM EST reply actions
First let me preface by saying how I want Jarvis to start, and wanted him to start before the season even started…
Let me get this straight, the majority of you in favor of benching cdr, claim that its because he is selfish and is a shoot first guy!? What do you think Jarvis does! He is a shooting specialist. The only guy better at shooting coming off a fast round the corner screen is Rip Hamilton. Jarvis shoots the second he gets the ball! (I love that personally, and I don’t claim CDR to be selfish, its all relative.)
I have no problem with CDR shooting the ball… that’s what a good shooter is suppose to do. I also see him dish to wide open cutters all the time.
by Tim on Feb 2, 2010 5:34 PM EST reply actions
“Why does Lee keep getting a free pass?”
@Tom F – because Lee is the only halfway decent defender on the entire team.
On topic – Hayes has been pretty bad the entire season (since coming back from injury) until the Clipper game — and it seemed to me in that game it took him a while to get into the game, and he was only good once he got into a rhythm. Maybe Kiki thinks that by starting him, he can get into a rhythm earlier.
by A.S. on Feb 2, 2010 5:35 PM EST reply actions
This is the way it was suppose to be from when that idiot Frank was here. CDR should have come off the bench since training camp. CDR is going to flourish as a 6th man. I predict 12-15 pts starting tonight. TWill will get 5 asts just from passing the ball to CDR in the second unit.
by SIC on Feb 2, 2010 5:36 PM EST reply actions
what might be good for CDR is that he can play his original position again, at shooting guard… I think SIC is right, this could work.
by Gerard Himself on Feb 2, 2010 5:42 PM EST reply actions
Funny how everyone is sayin Lee plays defense…
Has CLee been guarding SFs? NO
Has CDR been guarding SGs? NO
Last year CDR was groomed to be a back up PG
This year CDR played SF!
When does CDR get to guard players his size and position?
Maybe now that he’s on the bench…..

Hasn’t anyone figured out that there may be a secondary reason for this move?
Hayes has an expiring reasonable $2 million contract and appears to be slowing down. I doubt very much that Nets would pick him back up in August, as they would have to make room for the new rookies.
If Hayes continues to have more good games, he could easily be included in a pre-February 18 trade, along with probably Yi or Lee, not to mention other expirings if necessary.
Although it makes sense to keep Jarvis to help win 6 more games, Nets could and should attempt to bring back someone better, who might be worth keeping next year and beyond.
If Yi is included in such a trade, that would allow his $4 million salary to go towards this new (to be named) player.
Marcus Camby is one such upgrade, but there would be lots of other trades, especially if 3 teams are involved. Maybe even getting Iggi!
Believe me, Rod is going to try to do something, as long as he has Prokhorov’s blessing.

@John at the Jersey Shore
Re “Yi, the human turnover reel” – Yi is 3rd on the team in turnovers/game, behind Harris and Lopez. On a per 48 minute basis, he is behind Harris, TWill, Lopez, Hump, Dooling and Hayes.
by PhilNYC on Feb 2, 2010 6:00 PM EST reply actions
yup tom f lee and yi get all the shots and playing time they want. Lee can shoot 3-11 and always start while yi can get 3 rebounds and get manhandled and always get the green light cause its “his” team. Anybody notice these two guys are with us through trades. Somebody is trying to save face and make a point…hmmm i wonder who it is???
by Spider Man on Feb 2, 2010 6:06 PM EST reply actions
Everyone keeps knocking Yi as being the coach’s pet.
However, Kiki’s apparent preference to Yi tells other GM’s that Nets feel Yi has a future.
Nets would trade Yi before deadline if there was reasonable interest. However, there is no recent evidence for that interest from other teams.
Let’s just hope Yi has some good games like the first 4 upon his return. However, that shouldn’t change the need to trade Yi; It should only mean to get more back in return.
Yi won’t be getting much PT next year anyway, so might as well get something for him at this time.
China would be very upset with Nets and NBA if he doesn’t play big minutes next year. Nets can avoid that in 2 wks.
Not to get into politics, but has anyone seen today’s headlines about China being outraged at US for selling arms to Taiwan and for Obama meeting with the Dalai Lama?
by jerry25 on Feb 2, 2010 6:23 PM EST reply actions
Lee’s defense is vastly overrated on here.
Please tell me who this guy has shut down.
He hustles on d, i give him that, but there is nothing about it that says he’s anything but a guy that is stuck in there between average to above average as a defender.
by Mr. Dollar Bills on Feb 2, 2010 6:39 PM EST reply actions
I will hold off judgement until i see the game and how CDR approaches this. I think Lee should be coming off the bench personally.

by how things are looking and playing out , lee is 10x better than CDR , CDR simply doesnt wanna play with the nets anymore , simple as that , i would trade him for T. Prince
by BrS1 on Feb 2, 2010 9:06 PM EST reply actions
I like this move for the short-term. CDR has shown a bad attitude lately and is a natural scoring 2 who can give our bench a boost but is marginalized as a starter because he needs to slash to the hoop and take his shots to be effective. That being said, Jarvis Hayes is not, has never been and will never be and NBA starter due to his poor defense and inconsistent shooting. Hopefully Hayes stays hot for a few weeks and by the time he cools off T-Will will have shown enough to assume the starting role.
by Big Mike on Feb 2, 2010 9:39 PM EST reply actions
@ BrS1 – Well then, what was the point of trading Vince Carter in the first place?
by diehardNFFLbarnone on Feb 2, 2010 9:44 PM EST reply actions
@ BrS1 – I was thinking of it this way: Vince Carter for Courtney Lee -> Chris Douglas-Roberts to the bench -> Tayshaun Prince.

@robby
Please explain.
My statement is accurate.

Yi must put Vaseline all over his hands and arms before the game.
1/12 tonight, yet Kiki kept him in way too long.

Devin is BACK!
Devin is better than John Wall tonight (LOL).
Nets and Yi made too many mistakes earlier in the game. Should have been up by 10 pts. at the time of Devin’s rushed shot.

Devin is back alright. The last 3 minutes of that game was vintage devin harris. Bad decisions, bad defense.
Get this bum out of here
