Is The Yi Experiment Over?

Yi Jianlian looked good on return from his knee injury last month. But he has once again regressed, looking somewhere between awkward and awful. Now the Nets think he may need a rest. He's been playing with both a bad right shoulder and back. In 19 games before he hurt his shoulder, Yi scored in double figures 14 times. In nine games since, he reached double figures three times.

Yi is always hurt. That’s just another reason to be frustrated by him.

If only this were true… Look at the Net’s intro page to the website. I highly doubt they’ll bench the poster boy for “An Evening of Chinese Culture”… But hey, he played about 6 good games his whole Nets career, so good thing we have him at 4 mil a year for the next 2 seasons!

Why does this guy fumble every pass thrown to him! Butterfingers!!!!

by Mikee21 on Feb 19, 2010 11:46 PM EST reply actions

Trading RJ for Yi and Simmons is not even worthy of an “F” grade. That was off the charts bad but of course Rod was probably ordered to make the deal by the bozos running this team because they planned to market Yi to the Asian-American communities in Brooklyn and Queens, thinking he would be good enough to last until their planned move to Brooklyn. Good luck with that.

by Isaac on Feb 19, 2010 11:47 PM EST reply actions

@Isaac

There is NO good luck when it comes to Yi. None!

by Mikee21 on Feb 19, 2010 11:48 PM EST reply actions

He was never anything more than a marketing tool for the awful Ratner regime. They push a garbage product, isolate fans & use every trick in the book to suck dollars from your pocket.

It’s not over. Did you hear Kiki tonight? It is twin towers for the next two years.

by Robby on Feb 19, 2010 11:52 PM EST reply actions

The good thing about the Yi trade tho is we saved money for a 1s round pick or free agent, so not all bad. I just think if we are going to hold onto Yi he can’t start or play heavy minutes.

by Atronic on Feb 19, 2010 11:52 PM EST reply actions

this guy really disappoints us…

we need a really decent power forward.

Its ridiculous, this article comes one day after the trading deadline. Nets management needs to step up—-Ty Thomas just put up 9pts/12rb/6blocks vs. the Cavs in a WINNING effort!

Demar Derozan said it’s tough playing the Nets. Yes I could believe that because we have a good team. But when a good team is led by a guy who absolutely doesn’t know what he’s doing it’s going to lead to a 5-50 record!!!

I Hate Kiki!

Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeezzzzzz get Yi out of the starting lineup!

by NetsJetsFan on Feb 20, 2010 1:31 AM EST reply actions

The Nets have had an open roster spot since Sean Williams/Shawne Williams. They could waive Tony Battie, Bobby Simmons, and Trenton Hassell tomorrow and few would miss them.

D-LEAGUE CALL-UPS (HOW MY SUGGESTIONS DID LAST NIGHT)
MIKE HARRIS—team didn’t play.
DWAYNE JONES—11 points, 20 rebounds, 4 blocks, 2 steals.
REGGIE WILLIAMS—36 points (14-19, with 5-7 from 3), 6 assists, 4 steals.
ALEXANDER JOHNSON—19 points, 14 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal.

NETS STARTING FORWARDS LAST NIGHT
JARVIS HAYES—5 points (2-10), 3 rebounds in 28 minutes.
YI JIANLIAN—5 points (2-13), 7 rebounds in 31 minutes.

Keep starting the worst forwards in the NBA, while excellent scorers and rebounders are available for nothing.

by Femdig on Feb 20, 2010 1:54 AM EST reply actions

There come’s a time where the game of basketball is more important then marketing. This guy really needs to be send to the end of the bench with Simmons. 2 guys that contribute nothing. Might as well send Lee there also.

Jefferson and VC for 3 bums and then on top of that all we are going to get back in FA is a Joe Johnson.

by Seeker on Feb 20, 2010 1:57 AM EST reply actions

When Yi came back from the injury.. , Yi was aggressive, he was posting, and scoring at the free throw line like 5 or 6 times a night…Yi would hit his chest..Yi showed emotion…. but then brooks comment about another guy in the post..how he not used too…..and others was complaining about how their points and shots has drop.and how about locker room rumers , about players dont wanna si close to certain player…..after Yi return…

slowing by slowly yi got passive..and shoot mostly jump shots…Yi looks uncomfortable at times…

But to yi credit..Yi never say anything or complain about anything all..always support his teammates,…

The Nets should of traded Yi a few days ago…now got everyone all bashed ….

I know he can play better than that..but something is not right..and del harris left… I think alot on Yi mind…

by Akara on Feb 20, 2010 2:20 AM EST reply actions

@Akara, absolutely right. Yi should have been traded before the deadline. Yi would be happier. China basketball would be happier Yi goes to winning team. Nets fans would be happier.

Only Yormark & Thorn & Kiki want to keep Yi here.

by JohnY on Feb 20, 2010 2:27 AM EST reply actions

Before you guys bash the Yi/Simmons for RJ trade look at what RJ has become. His contract is huge, he has no spring left in his legs and the Spurs were desperately trying to get rid of him at the deadline. If anything the Nets cleared a ton of cap space for this summer and took a chance on a young athletic big guy. Granted it didn’t work out with Yi, but if RJ was still stuck on this team we wouldn’t have room for a max player.

by Keith Van Horn on Feb 20, 2010 2:35 AM EST reply actions

Can someone explain to me how Yi came back from injury and for the first 4 games average 22.5 and 7 with explosive dunks and drives to the rim. He was being covered by Al Jefferson, Gallo, Landry, and Jeff Green. Not some pushovers. Then he starts being Yi again. He can’t catch the ball, can’t shoot, can’t pass, and is the biggest defensive liability I have ever seen. I really am giving up on him now. Start Hump or Boone. Yi doesn’t deserve more than 5-10 minutes. This nets team makes me sick every time we play the raptors and all of the scrubs kill us. I am really contemplating not renewing my season tix… The best scenario I feel is this. Draft Wall/Turner and then sign David Lee and Rudy Gay.

Harris/Dooling/Sheron Collins (2nd round pick)
Wall/Lee
Gay/Twill/CDR
David Lee/Hump
Brook/Dallas pick (maybe Pittman or Alabi)

I feel this team could win 40-45 games and make the playoffs. It would atleast allow me to keep my damn tickets.

by Bruce on Feb 20, 2010 2:52 AM EST reply actions

Or this I will be a crazy dreamer. Sign Dwade to max and David Lee decent money.

by Bruce on Feb 20, 2010 2:53 AM EST reply actions

Of course this is over. After what Beasley did to Yi, he shouldn’t even see the floor again.

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Feb 20, 2010 2:58 AM EST reply actions

Very true, KVH:
RJ, VC, JKidd are shells of what they were in the 07 playoffs. Stiffins and Mikki are barely in the league and Curly still hasn’t 100% recovered.

Breaking up that team was the best thing the Rod did since getting rid of K-Mart, KK, LH, A-Train, and RR after the 04 playoffs.

People like to blame Rod and Ratner for getting rid of former stars but NONE of them ever came close to matching what they did for the Nets. Not even a little close.

The only probs are that many of the new Nets have been busts, and none of these busts has gotten as much playing time as Yikes. Remember the endless string ND articles on Yikes last summer? Even then I said why aren’t we getting that love for CDR who, even while firmly benched, is still a bigger asset than Yikes will ever be.

by BrooklynJohnny on Feb 20, 2010 3:19 AM EST reply actions

I actually think yi is a very nice hardworking person so I’ve got nothing against him except the fact that he is an awful player. Looks like a robot out there

by Claud on Feb 20, 2010 4:44 AM EST reply actions

And all because Kiki wanted to treat him like a special player. Giving him more attention then any of the other guys because he has this vision of Yi being the next Dirk. If Kiki would have just came in and coached "THE TEAM’ and not just “YI” we wouldn’t be in this situation now!

I Hate Kiki!

by Mikee21 on Feb 20, 2010 5:35 AM EST reply actions

I have been holding on longer than most in the hope that Yi was a sleeper, ready to awaken with a roar. Unfortunatly, this is looking less and less likely. The kid may still come good, but i don’t know how much longer the Nets can actaully wait. If there was a way to play him from the bench and develope him over a bit more time then great, but i have a feeling that as the only Chinese guy actaully playing the the league right now there is some ‘pressure’ to have him start (something at this moment in time he clearly is not up to).

Also, if the guy is injured don’t play him. If the shoulder injury is to blame for his perfomances then it should have been clear to kiki that he should not be starting, so why was he playing? Are the Nets under some obligation to play this kid?

by BigEd on Feb 20, 2010 7:31 AM EST reply actions

1. Yi is a decent player, but Lopes’ talk hurt him and he doesn’t know what to do now.

2. Yi should ask for trade so that he doesn’t have to play with Lopes together and get his confidence back.

3. For those of you who hate YI, read the story in Times Magazine of why Jeremy Lin can’t get scholarship from any division I university.

by Dan the Fan on Feb 20, 2010 7:42 AM EST reply actions

I am shocked or pissed by Kiki’s comments. Why does he pretend there is a future with Yi? A future with Yi means a bad team. His back does not contribute to his inability to hold onto the ball or to go strong inside. He is a bad player. He is exposed. He is not a starter. What he is, who knows, since he does not seem to have the temperment to come off the bench either. All I hear are excuses: my back hurts, my teammate doesn’t love me. He is not tough enough to play effectively through pain – but worse, he is not physically tough. A major disappointment. If Kiki and Yi are back, we are doomed.

by geo on Feb 20, 2010 7:59 AM EST reply actions

Interesting contrast with Kiki’s extreme latitude with Yi compared to his bench banishment of CDR. So much for doing what’s best for ALL of the young players.

yi is not a POWER forward. The word POWER and YI should not be in the same sentence. He is just a back up forward. And the YI experiment is not over because kiki HAS to play him. If he flops Kiki will get fired because thats his guy

To attempt to bring in a player based on a belief he has upside(giving them them the benefit of the doubt) + one who helps marketing in this entertainment-$ era is excusable. To try and develop that player and the fan-base-expanding aspect on a team that isn’t going anywhere this year is quasi-reasonable. To stubbornly and blatantly deny the terrible limitations and lack of upside and continue to ‘cornerstone’ that player is negligent, if not reckless. To plan for that player to be locked into a fifth of your future in a face-saving ego-driven fiasco is criminal. Fire Kiki. NOW!

by supreme on Feb 20, 2010 10:02 AM EST reply actions

Lol @ supreme last comment, that’s exactly what it looks like. I wonder if Yi and Kiki moved in together yet smh. I feel they should start Boone with Lopez, Lopez needs that guy next to him right now to have his back defensively. Lopez a lot of times if you watch makes a lot of defensive mistakes rotations wise, once he gets 2 fouls you can just drive down the lane and he won’t touch ya. But considering how RJ is playing with that contract, I would probably be more agitaded knowing we would have had no money this off season to go after free agents and stuck with him on the decline. So all in all the trade wasn’t so bad.

Everyone is ignoring the obvious… Yi is just not that smart. Most of the time he’s on the court, he looks confused. He plays like he doesn’t know what to do. He will not get better because he can not learn. He doesn’t have the brains to. You see it by the look on his face.

Next!

by NetRick on Feb 20, 2010 11:03 AM EST reply actions

I predict Yi will have a triple double next game

10 turnovers, 14 air balls , 17 fumbled passes.

by Dan the Fan on Feb 20, 2010 11:07 AM EST reply actions

Yi is not a starter in this league, that has been obvious since he got here. Injured or not, there is a disconnect between him and the game mentally on many nights. There is talent there, but the talent only gets you so far in a league where almost everybody is very talented.

Will be interesting to see where he ends up this summer.

by NiceBull on Feb 20, 2010 11:14 AM EST reply actions

We would have a much better record now if Sean Williams played all year over Yi…And we still would have him…..Also , The Yi trade was not a total Bust…. Richard Jefferson was labeled as a good player because and only because of JKIDD…..Without JKIDD , RJ played Zero Defense and he was a BALLSTOPPER on the offense so we should all be happy that we were able to make amends for the idiot move of giving this guy such a Large money contract…..You want proof…(Milwaukee,San Antonio)…Once these two smart(?) teams realized how bad he is , they traded or are trying to get rid of him….The Nets in turn gave him a Huge Contract…..YI was worth the chance that he had some potential but he should have played in the D-League for a while or the Nets should have realized that he sips through a straw after no more than ten games or so…not all year….Yes , This really hurt us on the court and has affected all of our players mentally…(Five and Fifty)….So it is Managements Fault (And Yi)…..This being said…Thorn,KiKi and ratner should all be disposed of immediately….Especially , Thorn for keeping that terrible past so called coach that we had for so long because he supposedely had Business dealings with his father !!!!!!

by NetFan48 on Feb 20, 2010 11:18 AM EST reply actions

by NetFan48 on Feb 20, 2010 11:19 AM EST reply actions

@NiceBull. Agreed. Yi’s ceiling to me ever since I first saw his “potnetial” was at best a 10-min a night player off the bench to hit some shots. He is not even really at that levfel yet either. The holes in his game are the size of the Grand Canyon. Some people believe those holes will close to be small. I don"t really think so.

Do you really think he’d be moved this summer? I’d be shocked. I’ve gotten into this “the Nets fans are stuck with Yi” as he is being force fed into our 5-50 faces along with several other over-rated youngsters and over-rated vets.

Shooting 39.7% for a power forward is not even D-League worthy.

And he was shooting 41% before this so-called “injury” occured, so what’s the difference?

by Antoine on Feb 20, 2010 12:22 PM EST reply actions

i don’t care that we traded Jefferson for Yi, Jefferson is god awful, but I am upset that the Nets added another year onto this guy’s contract. He should be off of the books, he’s not going to be worth what he’s being paid and he shouldn’t even see time on the floor.

The front office continues to make the fanbase foolish by playing this guy 30 minutes. I converse with raptor fans on another board and they all asked me why the Nets play this guy 30 minutes and have said that he is horrible.

This can no longer be spun as someone trying to adjust to the american game. He’s mentally weak and is soft. Good luck to him because I don’t think he’s a bad kid but I can’t see him as anything more than a 12 minute benchwarmer.

by Mr Dollar Bills on Feb 20, 2010 1:26 PM EST reply actions

Where else could he even fit in? I’m looking at potential draft day trade partners and don’t see too many.

Yi and our 2nd round pick for Memphis’ 2 late first round picks? Then try to trade up?

Who knows…

by Dirt on Feb 20, 2010 1:54 PM EST reply actions

Proky deal closes April 1. Kiki will be fired immediately thereafter. Hopefully Yi goes with him.

I understood why we traded Jefferson when we did, but surely there was a better deal out there – one based on basketball decisions, not marketing decisions. I’ve been a consistent Yi hater. He does seem like a nice kid, but scoring against him is like shooting fish in a barrel. Let him go be a nice kid somewhere else.

I haven’t been spending as much time here as I used to because watching every game is depressing enough. So I don’t know whether this subject was discussed elsewhere: did anyone notice Brook yelling at Kiki late in the Miami game when he put Yi back in? I couldn’t read his lips, but it looked as if he was saying something to the effect of, “are you KIDDING me?!! You’re killing us out here!” Anyway, Kiki pulled Yi out again immediately after that exchange. I suppose Brook could’ve been yelling about something else. But that was my take on what was going on.

by netsfan on Feb 20, 2010 3:03 PM EST reply actions

The only question I have, is whether Thorn didn’t move Yi at the deadline because 1. he knew there was no interest or 2. thought he could be moved later and would be kept as a possible backup next year.

I would hope one of the beat writers could tell us whether Yi is unable to be traded because no NBA team wants him on their roster?

I was lobbying right down to the wire for the Nets to bundle Yi with a future draft pick for a “keeper” forward, who is already under contract. Brandon Bass would have worked.

by jerry25 on Feb 20, 2010 3:10 PM EST reply actions

Yes, NI should be credited with bringing up this subject. I suppose it might have helped more, before the trade deadline, but then Yi’s value may have declined even more.
Maybe there wasn’t even any attempt to trade Yi?

Are American reporters even allowed to interview Yi, or is he protected like the assistant coaches? I don’t recall any challenging interview. His English I’m sure is fine by now.

I would like someone to ask him directly what year he was born (not allow him to point to his Passport).
The guilt over this issue and the loss of confidence from teammates and special treatment he receives, are the major cause for the team chemistry problem.

Management should have realized from the beginning that a 3 year age difference Does make a big difference in judging whether there is room for development. People doubted the importance of Age when I brought this issue up in the beginning. Now, it being proven that you can’t teach an older dog new tricks.

by jerry25 on Feb 20, 2010 3:23 PM EST reply actions

There’s no question that Yi’s listed age is fake. There’s just a load of overwhelming evidence that is impossible to argue against.

by Akara on Feb 20, 2010 4:34 PM EST reply actions

Regardless of whether the RJ trade was a good one, it did clear cap space for us. However, what we got back for RJ was a WAYYYYYY overpaid Bobby Simmons and an experiment in Yi, which, 90% of us can conclude should be OVER! Yi will never be a legit player in this league. His defense alone is not worthy of keeping as a starter. He can’t guard anyone! Other players have been that way in this league, but, atleast you could count on them offensively. Yi is way too inconsistent shooting the ball and not aggressive enough driving to the basket to offset bad shooting nights. In conclusion, bench him now and look else where for PF help.

by JustinNJ on Feb 20, 2010 4:38 PM EST reply actions

@jerry25, I agree completely, when I first heard about the trade that was by far my biggest issue with it. Even if his age wasn’t fabricated there was too much doubt one way or another, and too much of a difference between 19 and 23 when you’re talking about a prospect, to make trading for him make any sense. There are plenty of project players they could have acquired in a trade like that that might have made sense, but Yi really was not one of them.
