First Quarter Defense Does In Nets

It was one of those 36-minutes-is-not-enough nights at the Izod Center Friday night, as the Nets were unable to recover from a first-quarter onslaught by the Raptors. Playing without Chris Bosh, Toronto scored 32 points on 14-23 shooting in the opening 12 minutes. They led by as many as 18 points in the second before the Nets were finally able to start trading baskets with them. The Nets got to within six late in the third quarter before the Raptors opened it up again. Toronto had seven players in double-figures and shot 60 percent for the game. Brook Lopez had 22 points and eight rebounds for the Nets. Devin Harris added 19 points and 11 assists and Courtney Lee finished with 17 points, but Yi Jianlian had another ugly game, shooting just 2-13 from the field. He's shooting 31 percent in February.

Yi will be signed until 2050. Hayes was what from three? 1-11? That’s just depressing, sad, and embarassing.
So glad I’m out of the YES market now and couldn’t watch the game!

5-50. It looks kind of cool. 5-50.
5-77.
I still can’t believe that we are currently FORTYFIVE games under .500, and may finish the season OVER SEVENTY GAMES UNDER .500.

Can we sell Yi back to China for like $10,000 cash? I’d totally do it.
by Jim on Feb 19, 2010 10:34 PM EST reply actions
I’m asian and chinese and i hate yi. This whole chinese marketing is bull, i’m pretty sure chinese people do not go to the games anyway.

@ZHAS Yeah, why would a Chinese person tune in to watch Yi? It’s going to be pretty obvious that he’s not exactly reflecting glory on China.

All this Yi hate and nothing was done before the deadline. Management is dyslexic.
What about allowing Toronto 60% FGs? That might have been a factor. Play some defense damn it.

CDR’s in Kiki’s “dog house” huh? But not Yi, or Jarvis, or anyone else. What a cruel joke.
by Jeff on Feb 19, 2010 10:41 PM EST reply actions
Yi was horrible, but Hump aint nothing better. Kiki didnt play him in the 2nd half, and with good reason. His BB IQ is just really low.
What’s wrong with Kiki? Why did CDR get only 6 minutes, esp when Hayes was so terrible???
Please fire this clown Kiki. NOW.
Btw, Brook’s D is just atrocious. On a positive note, Devin is playing well as of late, the Blur is BACK.

We will break the record. I must think like this then i would be much better
by jarkid on Feb 19, 2010 10:43 PM EST reply actions
I don’t know what everyone is complaining about, I’m pretty sure, at least according to the Nets front office, this guy has 20-10 potential, just wait a year or 8 he’s still a very raw player. One day Yi is going to fall out of bed one morning and just start averaging 17ppg 8rpg 2bpg on 56% shooting-and then sustain it for season after season. He’ll go from soft no bball iq loser embarassment to lockdown defender… u guys just have to wait on this guy. i want him in a net uniform until he retires. And he’s only 17 so he’s got at least 45 years left in this league.
by Jim on Feb 19, 2010 10:43 PM EST reply actions
It’s simply silly to blame this team’s incompotence on a single player. The Nets were outscored 22 points tonight while Yi was on the bench. If you want to point fingers at someone for this loss, find someone else.
by Jet on Feb 19, 2010 10:44 PM EST reply actions
WOW !!!…FIVE and FIFTY…….Hayes has to go…Some Sharp shooter…He has one good game in every ten…….How come Yi cannot hold onto the ball ?…What’s up with that ??…Was Devin Harris playing tonight ?….Humphries did not seem to get alot of playing time….Never mind the Free Agents not wanting to come here but if this keeps up, Proky might end up backing out…
by NetFan48 on Feb 19, 2010 10:46 PM EST reply actions
I was the one who thought we will be better once Yi is back, because I think his shooting would help us big comparing to Boone’s inability of offense.
Yes he did help us at those days, but he was playing worse and worse, I think it’s time to let him sit on the bench and start boone again.
By the way, Humphries is so inconsistent. T-Will is doing fine.
by jarkid on Feb 19, 2010 10:46 PM EST reply actions
Wasn’t that the worst post conference you ever saw in your life! This Kiki guy continues and continues to throw Yi excuses. The reported said Yi went 2-13 or 2-10 tonight what do you think about that? Kiki responds well Hayes went blah for blah and Dooling went Blah for Blah like we didn’t ask you that Kiki we’re talking about Yi here what in gods name is going on with this Man!
by Mikee21 on Feb 19, 2010 10:47 PM EST reply actions
It’s simply silly to blame this team’s incompotence on anyone else but Yi. If you want to point fingers at someone for this loss, point them at Yi. And Hayes. But mostly Yi. But Jarvis is a good guy. Yi is just an embarassment. So nevermind. Blame it all on Yi.
by Jim on Feb 19, 2010 10:49 PM EST reply actions
@Jim,
good job with the copy and paste. So you’re blaming Yi for the 22 points deficit the Nets suffered while he was warming the bench? Nevermind, I see you use no logic.
by Jet on Feb 19, 2010 10:59 PM EST reply actions
i hate yi. i hate kiki. yet, i still love the nets? lets package kiki/yi for a group of chickens.
by i on Feb 19, 2010 10:59 PM EST reply actions
I’ve never ever seen a guy rewarded for bad play as much as Yi. CD-R gets benched while Yi is STARTING! STARTING! WHY?! I don’t understand Netsdaily says he shooting 31% for February do you really start a guy like that? Why isn’t he benched?! I’m so confused this team let me rephrase because it’s not the teams fault Kiki gives me MIGRAINES!
by Mikee21 on Feb 19, 2010 11:02 PM EST reply actions
Yi is a robot
Why isn’t Rod dippin’ into the D-League pool?
by mcbubba on Feb 19, 2010 11:04 PM EST reply actions
They should start giving out free Aspirin at the games!! That’s what I need right now!
by Mikee21 on Feb 19, 2010 11:05 PM EST reply actions
It is inexplicable that Yi played 32 minutes and Hayes 29 compared to Hump and CD-R, who played 8 and 6, respectively. Neither of those guys would have won us the game but when the team’s “shooters” are bricking everything they chuck up any competent coach would have given others their chance.
by The Legend on Feb 19, 2010 11:09 PM EST reply actions
so far …from wat i’ve read….. the trade possiblities suggested are:
-Yi for $10,000 cash
-Yi for a box of girlscout cookies
-Yi for a flock of chickens
in another note…. DHarris played well…. i’ve been extremely happy wit his play….Lopez another great game… Lee was decent…. CDR just looks lost out there… he lost every ounce of confidence…. Dooling played okay although some questionable shots
by blazin pp face on Feb 19, 2010 11:11 PM EST reply actions
so instead of 2 games winning streak, 2 losing streak lol. yi go die!! and funny thing is even the players make fun of yi
by matt on Feb 19, 2010 11:12 PM EST reply actions
@Jet
Sometimes the +/- stat one game doesn’t tell the whole story. Like the whole story of how much of an embarassment Yi has been to the Nets this season. He is the epitome of suck. He was decent for a couple games when he returned from injury, especially against teams lacking decent post defense (for ex, Knicks). Obviously tonight, it wasn’t just Yi who caused the blowout loss. A lot of people were awful tonight. But when you rate someone on how much they’ve CONSISTENTLY STUNK all season, Yi is at the top of the list. Courtney Lee, Devin Harris, Brook Lopez, Jarvis Hayes, Kris Humphries, Josh Boone, many more—-every once in a while these players will play excellent defense and make some flashy offensive plays to help give the Nets a chance to win. You rarely - practically never - see Yi give these types of performances. Every once in a while he’ll hit a ton of wide open jump-shots, grab some undefended boards, make his stats look nice, etc etc. But he doesn’t help us win. If a basketball fan – not a Nets fan – tunes in to a game to see how bad they really are, Yi can sometimes single-handedly make the Nets look embarassingly atrocious. He can’t catch crisp passes, airballs wide open 17 foot jumpshots in crucial minutes down the stretch(see Miami game), and wanders around the court with a dazed look on his face like some kind of weird alien. The team can be playing crisp basketball, they’ll run a play through Yi, and we’ll look like an embarassing joke to other basketball fans – an embarassing joke that we’re not. Yes, Josh Boone and Kris Humphries are not spectacular options at power forward, but I’d take either of them any day over Yi.
by Jim on Feb 19, 2010 11:15 PM EST reply actions
@ blazin pp face cdr only played 6 minutes what more can the kid do I mean common sense.
by 1milord on Feb 19, 2010 11:18 PM EST reply actions
I fail to understand how we still have Yi supporters. What is there to support? he sucks! let him go let him go let him go! or put him on the bench I don’t care he does not deserve 30 mins a night!
by Mikee21 on Feb 19, 2010 11:27 PM EST reply actions
I just can’t get over the fact that as soon as that reporter asked Kiki on his thoughts about Yi’s performance tonight he went straight to the guy with the bad hip Dooling. Well Dooling went 2-9 like are you serious Kiki the excuses for Yi needs to stop.
by Mikee21 on Feb 19, 2010 11:36 PM EST reply actions
Why!!!? Play Yi at all!Play cdr ever!Let kiki coach any more! Why not!? Send TWill to the d league to get enough time to develop a bb iq!Play some of the vets who at least have a clue!Let Lopez get 20 shots a game!Fire kiki!Get a coach who has at least one offensive play and some concept of defense! Buy Yi some fingers!!!!!
by FrankC on Feb 19, 2010 11:40 PM EST reply actions
I think Robby had it right a few days ago. Yi needs to go to the D-League to work on his weaknesses, cuz they definitely overshadow his abilities.
The Chinese Basketball league, by all accounts (including that of my friend from Shanghai), sucks compared to even Division 1 of the NCAA.
Yi could one day be good. But he’s not now. I wouldn’t trade him for absolutely nothing.. but he should be the one getting 6 minutes, for now, while here.
by Paul B. on Feb 20, 2010 12:16 AM EST reply actions
So, trade Devin Harris? Devin Harris sucks? If it were up to nets fans, we should trade any player that has a bad game or a bad stretch. Yall need to learn to calm down and look at the bigger picture. You guys want perfection from every player in every single game, give em a break they’re only human
by muwu on Feb 20, 2010 1:32 AM EST reply actions
This is the first stretch of games where Harris has played for the most part, very well. I don’t think anyone is taking anything away from him in regards to this but how do you expect Nets fans to react when their team’s starting PG was stinking up the gym on both ends of the floor? That said, his play improving is great to see. Haven’t seen him play this well since the first two months of last season.
What’s wrong with Jarvis Hayes? Dude has been awful the last two contests.
The agenda is quite clear. Yi is allowed to be horribly, and rewarded by all of the minutes in the world, while other players like Boone and CDR get benched. There IS an agenda, I hope it’s clear now.
by Mr. Dollar Bills on Feb 20, 2010 9:49 AM EST reply actions
once again, everyone blames yi – the only guy on the team last night that was + (+5) instead of -. i know he’s not very good, but there’s a lot more wrong with this team than yi. yi is a project and shouldn’t play more than 15 min. but yi’s not the reason we lose.
by drmagoo on Feb 20, 2010 10:36 AM EST reply actions
It’s not Yi’s fault. But this guy is being played 30+ minutes a game and is playing terribly. Shooting 40% from the field at his position is god awful. The kid flat out stinks and there’s no reason why he should be taking up cap space next season, or why he is even playing more than 10 mins a game. CDR and Boone get glued to the bench and neither of them played half as bad as Yi is allowed to do on a nightly basis. There is a legitimate reason behind the backlash he is receiving, and frankly I don’t feel sorry for him.
by Mr. Dollar Bills on Feb 20, 2010 11:07 AM EST reply actions
A BAG of M&Ms!!! Thats all I want for him! Offer me something! Anything! A buck, a quarter! A mop! Like a said before, maybe a chair! We can use that in his place!
by DISGRUNTLEDFAN on Feb 20, 2010 12:46 PM EST reply actions
The hayes starting experiment is failing miserably. the only way this can work is if CDr is given the green light to shoot when he comes off the bench. Hayes and Lee are too inconsistent to be starters in the nba. Hayes doesnt rebound or provide steals so whats the point of him getting minutes? Cdr does the same amount of work as him in the scant minutes he sees per game.
Yi needs to be given a pink slip and an office job. His hands are terrible so he will never be a good player.
devin is injured again, he is what we call a “bit^^”, any lil scrape or nick and he has to play it up. his style of play disgusts me and i pray the next coach calls him out on it. A team takes on the persona of its pg and if the pg is a whore then guess what type of team you are going to have????
speaking of pg’s , watch the N.O situation, chris paul will be moved, collison is actually a better all around player than paul right now and he is still young. he had a triple double the other nite.
