So Many Empty Seats, So Little to Watch

The Nets' future, everyone tells us, is filled with possibilities: new arena(s), new owner, new coach, new players, including if everything falls into place, the first pick in the draft. But for the fans, the present is as ugly as anything any team anywhere in any professional sport has ever faced. With a third of the season left, crowds continue to dwindle and the question is raised, why even go to a game?

Why even go to a game? i, honestly believe most who show up are “oh i got tickets lemme just go” people.
but, ni you pretty much nailed it. so many empty seats, so little to watch

Too watch history, and to see other team’s superstars.. thats why.

by JJ on Feb 19, 2010 8:04 AM EST reply actions

Nearly free seats and if they actually win you feel extra special to see a rare Nets victory firsthand.

The next three years at The Prudential Center will be enjoyable while we look forward towards Brooklyn.
Be positive an everything will fall into place in the next three years.

by Dziedzic on Feb 19, 2010 8:19 AM EST reply actions

To buy a ticket for $3 and then move down who wouldn’t. And it’s not like they’ll kick you out the building they need as many fans as they can get so hey choose your seat sit behind the bench if you want to they won’t complain.

by Mikee21 on Feb 19, 2010 8:23 AM EST reply actions

I think the extremely cheap seats are the thing I will miss the most about Izod. Its the same thing I miss about Shea. You could usually get tickets in the upper deck for $7. With Citi Field, you will be paying a minimum of what, $25?. For teams as bad as the Nets and Mets, its too much of a risk laying down serious cash because more often than not, watching the game will be a grueling experience.

by Chris2 on Feb 19, 2010 8:46 AM EST reply actions

Really Mikee? Is it always like that? Lets say a game against another bad team like the Wolves, and if i would buy the cheapest possible ticket in the bleachers section where no one can even probably see me, would they let me go down to like the lower section? I mean, im not even asking courtside or behind the bench, maybe just somewhere low enough to get a high five from them after the 1st half.

I dont think they would do that because its not fair for those people who paid a lot more money for the closer seats. I thought they only do that when the weather is bad and you still came to see the game.

I haven’t been this year and likely won’t be going the rest of the year (first time since 93 if I don’t)… I just see no reason to waste my money on nonsense. I’ll watch it in HD if I actually want to torture myself.

The Nets are having one of the most interesting and entertaining moments in team history.

I have followed this team for a very long time, including ABA the days, and this team captures the imagination like no other except for the Dr. J years and Kidds first couple of years.

And the best is yet to come in the next few months.

Rather watch this team then most other middle of the road boring teams which make up most of the NBA now a days.

Lets go Nets…

by Mike on Feb 19, 2010 9:13 AM EST reply actions

Why go? Because after April 12, I won’t be attending any more Nets games. I will be paying my respects to the Meadowlands and to all the memorable nights I have had there as Nets fan for the past 20 years. So hard to say goodbye, yet with despicable individuals like Ratner and Yormark involved, it becomes a little easier.

Thank you for all the memories Nets, I don’t know what I’m going to do without you but it has been one amazing ride.

by Isaac on Feb 19, 2010 9:37 AM EST reply actions

Haven’t been around and haven’t read any of the posts on the cap space. But I can imagine most fans are up in arms about us not making any deals and that the Knicks cleared out all this cap space.

A few things jump out at me though – the Nets were very smart in not taking back any bad contracts in order to move expiring contracts. The Najera-Hump deal was a great deal (albeit under the radar) where we got rid of total garbage and got a guy who could and should be a bench player for us in the future.

The Knicks have absolutely staked the entire existence of their franchise to Lebron. They have no first round pick this season. If their 2011 pick is not the top pick of the draft – Houston can swap picks. And their 2012 pick is only protected top 5. So theoretically (and quite possibly) the Knicks may not have a first round pick until 2013. They have 4 players signed for next season: Gallinari, Chandler, Toney Douglas and Eddy Curry. Curry is just a massive lead weight around the cap figure who will never play. Gallinari and Chandler are basically SFs – so they are essentially the same position (and the same position as Lebron). Toney Douglas is a promising young guard (more of a combo than a pure PG).

So lets say the Knicks go after Bosh and Lebron……They will be a 5 player team and be forced to fill out the rest of the roster/rotation with D-Leaguers. Thats a fact. They will have 3 of those players who are natural SFs and have no center (do you really think Curry is the answer at center?). I think with Lebron and Bosh that is not a playoff team. You can not win in this league without depth. And they will not be able to get any high draft picks to help out for the next 3 years. The NY Media and Donnie Walsh want to spin this as great cap management – but its like putting your entire life savings on black and crossing your fingers. If they get 2 max free agents – they will have NO bench. If they fail to get a max free agent (Lebron, Bosh, Amare) they are going to be forced to overspend on Joe Johnson, Boozer, etc. And if they don’t manage to rope 2 of those 2nd tier free agents – they will be lucky to win 5 games total over the next 3 years.

If I were the Nets GM……I would expect to have a very good idea before free agency begins of what Lebron is going to do. Call it tampering all you want – but a partial owner of the franchise (Jay-Z) is best friends with the prized free agent on the market. So if you think best friends don’t discuss exactly what one of them wants to do before he has to make a decision that large – you need to make new friends.

If Lebron tells Jay-Z he wants to come to the Nets, the deal will already be worked out before free agency begins. If Lebron tells Jay-Z he is staying in Cleveland for 1 or 2 or 3 more years – then the Nets can immediately go after someone else without tying up cap holds for 7 days. In that scenario – I think the Nets should actively recruit David Lee, offering him a heavily front loaded contract. He fits our biggest area of need (rebounding PF), has developed into an All-Star caliber player, has developed a very good jumper, and is a virtual lock for a double-double every night. While he is not a great defender, he does get down the floor very well – so he could run with our young guards. Offering him a K-Mart type deal that is heavily front loaded works on 2 fronts – first the Knicks will be even more hard pressed to match it and second his contract will decline in the later years of his deal which would coincide with when we need to resign a guy like John Wall or Evan Turner.

And if the Knicks lose David Lee to the Nets, and come away with Joe Johnson – they will be left with egg all over their face and quickly regain their irrelevant status.

The only reason to go is the same reason most of us watch every game on TV. We’re fans and 1 win can make you feel good for a day. Also it’s like people rubber necking after a car wreck, everybody is watching to see if they really will be the worst team in NBA history. All you have to do is look at how many posts there are on this site to know that people are still interested..

Why go to the games? Are Thorn and Kiki giving us any reason? Did they improve us? They will cart out the same junk until July and then, well, I think Lebron is staying, Bosh not interested and why would Wade come here? The only one that makes sense is Johnson, but why would he want to start over? Next year will be all about the kids again and Kiki and Thorn will try to convince us how great Lee and Yi YiLee LeeYi can be.

How about you go to games because live events are fun. I don’t care how good or bad the team is. I always enjoy myself more at a live event. And compared to all the other teams in the area, it’s the best deal if you want to take your family out.

I love the Nets, but I am also a basketball fan and I enjoy seeing the young players on the Nets develop and I like watching the big stars on the other teams play.

If anything, I really like the idea of signing David Lee, and giving Yi the boot. I know its hard to admit your mistakes Thorn and Kiki, but Yi is and always will be a bust. It’s ok, it happens to everybody, but don’t try to justify your decision’s by keeping him around because it’s not helping anybody. Lets get a young all-star who WILL produce rather than dwell on the fantasies of what Yi COULD produce.

If you like going to a bad neighborhood, parking in very expensive street lots, sitting in a literal nosebleed seat (if you don’t care to pay luxury suite/new arena type prices), with potentially the same minor league roster than the Prudential is clearly for you. Oh and by the way, you still get to watch the team potentially leave this Garden of Eden as soon as two years from now for all of you with “Jersey Pride”.

Enough. We get that you don’t want the Nets to move to Newark and then Brooklyn but your continued crusade to turn fans away from the future of the team just comes off as pathetic. The fact of the matter is that the Izod is a horrendous facility and the Rock will provide a better experience for a greater amount of fans for the next two years, making the Newark move a no-brainer. And any Nets fan from the area should realize that the past 30+ years have proved that the New Jersey fanbase is insufficient to support a profitable NBA team and we should at least be thankful that the team is moving to nearby Brooklyn where we can still attend games at a state of the art arena rather than moving to Kansas City or some other faraway city. Now please Issac, just move on from sharing your odd attachment to the worst arena in sports and talking about how you hate the moves, and start talking about the team or something else.

by The Legend on Feb 19, 2010 1:04 PM EST reply actions

Good points Legend.
If the new owner assembles a good roster for next season I will begin attending Nets home games once again since The Rock is an awesome place to see a game.

I still watch most games on tv, home or away, and will always hate the Knicks.

The Swamp arena is just not a good place to go to for any reason. look at the ticket prices on StubHub compared to the what is being offered for Devils games. There is no value to a Nets ticket right now. Next year with hopefully a revamped lineup the value of a Nets game will have increased.

by Newark Nets (Formerly Jersey Pride) on Feb 19, 2010 1:08 PM EST reply actions

by jarkid on Feb 19, 2010 1:09 PM EST reply actions

I have season tickets because I love basketball and the state of New Jersey. This will be my last year of tickets however because they are moving out of the state (refuse to help fund that in the meantime), so the Devils will now have my money. Jerseys Team! See you tonight to watch the boring raptors.

by Anthony (Jersey) on Feb 19, 2010 1:46 PM EST reply actions

“look at the ticket prices on StubHub compared to the what is being offered for Devils games. There is no value to a Nets ticket right now.”

Now you’ve gone too far – you WANT to pay higher ticket prices??? One of the great things about going to games at the Meadowlands all these years was getting pretty decent seats upstairs for very affordable prices. That will no longer be an option.

I am sorry if my main concern is my enjoyment (and affordability) and to be given a team that is actually professional caliber (like the one that went to back to back NBA Finals before Ratner arrived) and not to see the business side of the team succeed!

And for the 100th time, I would have supported a move to Newark for almost all the reasons you have mentioned if it were a PERMANENT move. I, unlike you care about where this team plays and if it’s not in New Jersey it’s not the same team.

by Isaac on Feb 19, 2010 1:52 PM EST reply actions

I agree isaac in that a move to Newark is great overall, but it doesnt matter to me now because they are leaving the state. If brooklyn fell through and the Nets in Newark is permanent, I would have season tickets for next year already. Now, I may attend 5 games tops next year. NJ DEVILS!

The nets moving out of the IZOD center is the first step in legitimizing a franchise that has forever been an afterthought. The prudential center is a clear upgrade over the IZOD center and the Barclays Center will be a clear upgrade over The Rock.

From the looks of it, you’re cheap and you only like the IZOD center because you can buy 3$ tickets on stubhub. The franchise and the arena are a joke and their finally washing themselves of that label. To that I say Thank God. The future is bright for the BROOKLYN NETS!

by Newark Nets (Formerly Jersey Pride) on Feb 19, 2010 2:43 PM EST reply actions

no Mattsimo, i’m not “cheap”, I have given this organization plenty of my money for the last 20 years. But i’m not going to sit on here and defend the impending move because the arenas offer nothing to me – the common fan that I can’t get at the Meadowlands. And another thing the new buildings can never offer are all the memories a fan like me has of seeing his or her team from the time they started going to games there while growing up even until the present when this rotten ownership group has given us the worst on-court product one could have ever dreamed of as their parting gift to us.

by Isaac on Feb 19, 2010 2:45 PM EST reply actions

@ Issac

I respect your opinion. But why get so worked up over the team moving. I am a die hard fan. I have spent hundreds of dollars on courtside seats this season even with all the losing. You keep saying their taking money from us and all this stuff but what are they really doing wrong? Their are far more worst things this franchise could be doing. Why can’t you just accept the fact they are moving and either: A)Enjoy the team while they are here and root them on in Brooklyn because your a NETS fan. or B) Just forget about it and go about your day.

Why build up all this hatred towards the team and anger, and this “We are better than this fans” approach and just enjoy yourself. Lifes too short to be holding grudges against a freakin NBA franchise. Just sit back and enjoy the sport. If its from your home great. If its at the arena, even better. If you don’t want to spend the money or watch them at all, dont turn on the Yes network. I just don’t get how this affect you personally this much.

It has only gotten worse as the team continues to reach new lows to be topped off by setting the all-time worst mark in league history this year.

And yet the guy, Ratner skates off for free amongst almost all of the fans because he supposedly found the savior in Prokorov.

When you care about something as much as I do the New Jersey Nets, it hurts to have it taken away – you should be able to understand that and so should everyone else that takes time out of their day to come here.

@ Newark Nets,

I’m in total agreement. Brooklyn is an upgrade WHEN IT IS BUILT and the team is playing there, not before then. Also, I’d go so far as to say it would be difficult to have a modern arena better than the Rock. It has all of the amenities modern arena come with these days, plus a variety of mass transit options.

I’ve been able to go to a lot more games this season than I previously have because the prices are low. With the prices so low I’m able to get to more games, which gives me more for gas, etc.

Do get me wrong I want the team to stay in Jersey, but people have to be convinced the team is worth keeping. After all that’s happened, moving to Newark is probably the best thing that’s happened to the team this season

But I just feel that you already know what is going to happen and yet you still let it get to you. I think at some point you just need to come to grips with it and move on. Like I said life is too short to be this upset with an NBA franchise. You have to have bigger and better things in your life that can take up more of that emotion. All I’m saying.

After that game I just saw how Lebron really is SORE LOSER I wouldn’t want him on my team anyway what a girl, I think Carmelo deserved some respect after jaying him in the face and then playing great D on him also. (He should have gave him at least a handshake).

by Mike on Feb 19, 2010 3:58 PM EST reply actions

In my opinion the Wizards are a franchise that has it way worse than we do. They paid a player a disgusting contract you hasn’t produced in over 3 seasons and could find himself in prison. They lost one of their cornerstones when they traded Jamison. They let another one of their “Big Three” go in Butler. They don’t have a lot of cap space and never have had much success beyond a couple of playoff berths. Just when it looked like they would have a promising team they let most of it slip away.

That is a team that will be struggling to get their franchise going for years to come in my opinion.

Since we are talking about Wizards, look at the other Washington team there: NHL Washington Capitals.

I heard that Capitals owner is going to buy Wizards. Capitals were terrible four years ago, in fact were last. Then they rebuilt through draft (got lucky and drafted Ovechkin). Now they are the best team in NHL. So I think Wizards would follow the same path. Don’t expect them to be a contender in near future.

by Tony on Feb 19, 2010 4:23 PM EST reply actions

Most successful teams do build thru the draft then add key veterans later. The Celtics broke that mold but I would rather build a young team first, then go after veteran FA’s when the time is right.

Maybe the time is not right for the Nets to go after FA’s.
Of course if they can land the one of the elite go for it but if they can’t, is it worth over paying now for 2nd tier talent or waiting another year or two.

I guess we will find out soon…

Lets beat Toronto tonight. Lets go Nets…

There were two seasons with good memories in the IZOD center. The rest was filled with either terrible or mediocre teams. That building has no cache, luster, or nostalgia. It’s a terrible arena and the move to Newark is good. I understand you being upset about the team leaving the state but not the IZOD.
