Nets Blow Another Chance at a Winning Streak

The situation seemed to be just right for the Nets to put together their first winning streak of the season Wednesday night at the Izod Center. Dwyane Wade, who has killed them for the last several years, left the game late in the first quarter with a strained left calf. After trading leads with the Heat for most of the night, the Nets led by six with four minutes left in the game. But they then missed their next 10 shots as the Heat went on a 13-2 run to pull out the win. Brook Lopez led all scorers with 26 points and added 10 rebounds, Devin Harris added 18 points, and Kris Humphries grabbed 12 boards. But the Nets shot just 35 percent from the field and 1-15 from 3-point range. Michael Beasley and Quentin Richardson combined for 39 points and 25 rebounds for Miami.

All for a career-ending injury to Yi, say I

by Jim on Feb 17, 2010 10:12 PM EST reply actions

Sigh…what were they doing in the last few minutes?

when the Q-Rich three was made, I think it’s done… sigh..

by jarkid on Feb 17, 2010 10:13 PM EST reply actions

WOw. Just wow. I do not understand why kiki took dooling out and replaced him with lee. At that point lee was 0-7 and he rewarded kiki by missing two wide open 3s. Great game by Lopez. Harris was up and down but he was really impressive at times. CDR forced things at scoring but had some nice passes. T will looked pretty good. Yi. Ugh. Humphries. eh.

by Sparklespice on Feb 17, 2010 10:14 PM EST reply actions

We got an act of god with Wade and Jermaine hurt….
Kiki just coaches the way he likes not the way to win. He felt oh we have a lead let me take out Dooling and put in Courtney Lee 0-8 for the night.
Then he felt let me put in my man Yi Jianlian who got killed the entire night by Beasley.
THEN WE LOSE

KIKI= WORST COACH
Yi= Embarassment
Lee= Biggest bust

by Randy Oreens on Feb 17, 2010 10:14 PM EST reply actions

I didn’t understand one substitution today, it was like Kiki was trying to lose this game. If we had a momentum he tried to break it.

And never understand why the team’s guards fail to give the ball in the place where Lopez has advantage. Lopez could have had an opportunity for at least 10 more points if not for the poor display of judgement by our guards.

by Sunil on Feb 17, 2010 10:14 PM EST reply actions

Why take Key out immediately after he hits an emphatic and-1? Notice how they didn’t score again since that. Leave in the hot guys!

So Wade misses most of this game, we had a lead in the fourth and then this… sigh

by Gerard Himself on Feb 17, 2010 10:16 PM EST reply actions

Tough loss. Why take Dooling out at crunch time if he is carrying the team for a guy who couldn’t put one in the ocean tonight? We need a real coach.

by Peter on Feb 17, 2010 10:17 PM EST reply actions

We could have won this game!!

Fire KIKI!!!

Why did he took out Dooling, and terrence williams when both of them were playing well, especially Dooling.

He totally cost us the game by substituting the ice cold Lee in. He also should’ve left Humphies on the floor, instead of substituting him with Yi. Yi couldn’t defend beasly even if his life depends on it.

Brook and Keyon were both great in helping us get the lead. Harris was good for the first quarter, and then went ice cold too in addition to his many careless turnovers.

Once again, Kiki cost us the game….

by LetsGoNets on Feb 17, 2010 10:17 PM EST reply actions

FIRE KIKI he should of kept kris and keyon in. this team was playing well late in 4th and oh yeah LOPEZ IS A MONSTER! but he should not force a shot. no excuse should not lose to a team without best player

You all would do a better job then kiki…what a joke. Nets had a nice thing going with dooling and twill…then kiki destroys it. WOW….

Best part of the game was when Yi was taken out of the game and a fan yells “Yi your HORRIBLE”…awesomeness.

by Andy on Feb 17, 2010 10:17 PM EST reply actions

Kiki and Yi are killing this team time and again. So depressing to watch. Lopez was an absolute beast again tonight.

Damn it…….they should have won

by jarkid on Feb 17, 2010 10:18 PM EST reply actions

You finish the game with the 5 guys that were playing well, even if they aren’t starters. Kiki is clueless.

by rknine on Feb 17, 2010 10:18 PM EST reply actions

Winnable game coached to a loss. Insufferable.

by Jeff on Feb 17, 2010 10:19 PM EST reply actions

That’s it! I gave Yi a second chance when everyone was like “Oh the team’s gonna do better when he comes back.” Well the team does worse when he’s not sitting on the bench. Why… WHY… take Humphries out?? When the announcers (who I love) were doing the tale of the tape between Beasley and Yi, they should have really done Beasley and Humphries.

I don’t want to see Yi in a Nets uniform again. I don’t care if he saves my mother from a speeding train, I want him off the team for good. I don’t care about the Chinese market. I care about winning. Yi, it’s time to hang up the Jersey and get a full time job of rescuing cats out of tall trees for children.

by jarkid on Feb 17, 2010 10:25 PM EST reply actions

This loss probably hurts way more than any of the other ones because its so apparent Kiki cost us the game. In all seriousness he is destroying us from the iide out, he needs to be let go, yesterday. I mean it’s as if he wants to destroy our momentum with HORRIBLE substitution patterns rather than the other teams. Ohhh what’s this where playing well, where’s Yi at we need to be doing this while he’s in the game. Terrance Williams trying to get better, Kris Humpries grabbing every rebound can’t have that.

by Atronic on Feb 17, 2010 10:26 PM EST reply actions

This is all on Kiki. Even in the first half when they built a lead and Devin was on fire, Kiki takes him out in the first qtr leading and when he returns it’s 6 minutes to go in the half and we’re down 6. The Dooling substitution was stupid during crunch time and the only reason he took Yi out is because he missed the rim on a wide open 15 footer and Beasley was killing him. This was all bad coaching. But then again, a lot of people here thought that anybody would do better than Frank. So be careful what you ask for.

by supreme on Feb 17, 2010 10:27 PM EST reply actions

LOL! Why do I even watch?!? I knew they were losing this from tip-off. Hasell shoul’ve been gaurding Beasley. We had no answer for him, and I thought Hassell was the only one on the bench with some size above average defense and a head above his shoulder to guard a guy like Beasley. YI… what a joke.Take out Dooling for Lee while Dooling is having a field day? Is Kiki too proud that he would risk his career for choices he me that are proving out to be busts? Franks was in a very tough position at the beginning of the year, where he was short of players, the only thing wrong in my view that he was doing was playing simmons too much with the small ball. Not playing Williams(Sean) wasn’t Franks fault, management mandated him not to play Williams. We need to hire him back for the rest of the season, Nets are continuously paying him anyway? Thanks for the rant!

I don’t understand the blame on Yi.

Beasley has great offensive skills, no one can stop him tonight or every night, especially when Wade is down. I wonder if Heat fans are hating on O’Neal for getting killed by BL while having a worse shooting % and less reb than Yi tonight?

i feel very sad now what we need is a good coach and c lee is a decent player but not starter material. could be an effective player off the bench. as for yi i think just let his contract expires and dont bother about him. i would gladly trade him for nothing. btw is there any websites for kiki like what LFrank had last time?

Fire Courtney Lee!

(Just wanted a little balance to the comments.)

Why oh why do the Nets take so many long jumpers when the game is on the line??? STOP TAKING LONG JUMPERS!

by A.S. on Feb 17, 2010 10:35 PM EST reply actions

Kiki says the guys executed the plays well.

Um, WHAT?? The plays were designed to have long jumpers? Um, moron, get the ball in the paint!

by A.S. on Feb 17, 2010 10:37 PM EST reply actions

Guys the game was lost at the 6 minute mark of the 4th quarter. I think we were up by 5 at that point. TWill and Hump were subbed out and replaced with Jarvis Hayes and Yi. That was the game.

TWill was doing a very good job creating energy, being active in the passing lane on the defensive end and finding open guys on offense. His court vision is amazing.

Hump was providing great energy and battling for rebounds.

I told the people in my section that was the game. The minute that substitution happened I knew we were losing.

And does anyone want to jump on my bandwagon that TWill will ultimately be the PG of this team (or another team)? His court vision is unrivaled on this team. He is the only guy on our roster who can easily find and hit a player cross court with a skip pass. Again he lost a few assists by guys not catching passes or failing to execute.

by Ryan243 on Feb 17, 2010 10:37 PM EST reply actions

Not sure if anyone was at the game tonight – but when Yi was finally replaced with about 3.30 to go in the 4th by Hump – not only was the crowd cheering but the guys on the bench appeared to be cheering that Yi was taken out of the game……

This could be controversial to say…..but the camraderie on this team appears much better over the past 10-15 games (which is when they have been competitive in about 95% of those games). If anyone notices – this is when Kiki started quickly pulling Yi and giving crunch time minutes to Hump. Just saying……

@ND

Where is my comment? What is wrong with that????

by Tony on Feb 17, 2010 10:41 PM EST reply actions

Why Kiki sub Harris when he was going basaltic in the first Q and left him in the bench till 4 or so minutes left in the second Q?

We blew a free gift from Heat…….

by Tony on Feb 17, 2010 10:42 PM EST reply actions

Humphries is not any better than Yi. They both suck. There is a reason he couldn’t get playing time at any of his former teams.

Job #1 this off season is getting a real, NBA-quality power forward.

by A.S. on Feb 17, 2010 10:43 PM EST reply actions

Once again getting killed at both Forward positions, while young Forwards like Al Thorton and, Amare (still is) were available.

by jerrod on Feb 17, 2010 10:43 PM EST reply actions

When the guy in the crowd yelled “Yi you’re horrible”, I actually felt bad for Yi. Yi needs to be burried on the bench like Boone was for a month. His confidence is obviously shot.

Everybody in the gym except Kiki knew that Dooling should have been left in that game. Its such a disgrace.

ND doesn’t have a sense of humor, I see. Feh.

by TWilliAM on Feb 17, 2010 10:45 PM EST reply actions

okay here we go watching the third quarter really got me disgruntled. If a guy hasn’t been making his shots and isn’t doing anything, people like boone, lee, hayes, and yi. Wouldn’t it make sense to get them out of the game right away and put other people who can contribute instead of letting them play the entire quarter. If Kiki did thati think we could’ve won by 6-7 points, but instead we were in the slump with the heat but did worse, and did not convert. But i think it isn’t mainly kiki’s fault.. Maybe they were trying to showcase some players so that they might get a deal tomorrow.. just saying.

by ZHAS on Feb 17, 2010 10:46 PM EST reply actions

A bit off topic, but the cavs just made a trade to aquire Antawn Jamison, which sucks for our Lebron chances. By the way, we have the worst record in history and the trade deadline is tommorow and it looks like we will do nothing. What is the front office thinking? This team is such a disaster.

by t-bone on Feb 17, 2010 10:47 PM EST reply actions

I cannot believe kiki’s substitutions.. it seems as though he wants us to lose the games! Yi you are the worst player i have ever seen on an NBA game, period. The chinese robot SHOULD NOT play anymore! get this clown out here!

by claud on Feb 17, 2010 10:47 PM EST reply actions

The only really horrendous substitution was at the 6 minute mark of the 4th quarter…That was silly. The 5 on the floor were playing really well together, and much of the energy was being created by TWill and Hump. And they were both pulled out. I know I harp on this all day everyday, but our offense is much more efficient these days when TWill is on the floor distributing the ball.

by Ryan243 on Feb 17, 2010 10:49 PM EST reply actions

Devin Harris should have easily had double digit assists tonight. Yi and Lee missed several wide open shots tonight. The play where DWade gets hurt, Lee had a wide open 3, Yi missed a wide open 3 at the end of the half and the shot that got him yanked at the end of the game. CLee missed back to back corner jumpers. There were several other plays but those come to mind. This is why players are better when they have better talent. Devin will be a lot better when he has to shoot less and has players that can knock down open shots.

C.Lee is incredible inconsistent. When your shots are not falling in, you should drive and make contacts for foul shots.

by jarkid on Feb 17, 2010 10:58 PM EST reply actions

YI LOST the game it was all his fault he only cost us a 6 point swing think about it he lets beasley score a lay up ON HIM then comes back and misses a WIDE OPEN jump shot then he lets beasley make a jumpshot in his face. he is a terrible defender and offensive player oh wait that means hes worthless yup yup. answer to the nets waive YI

by NJN34 on Feb 17, 2010 11:00 PM EST reply actions

C Lee will be a good player off the bench for us in the future. He is not a reliable enough shooter to be an every game offensive player – knowing he needs to score to help us win.

And as supreme said – Devin is a really good player and will be much better next season when he is surrounded by a better cast. Both Devin and TWill lose a lot of assists every night because guys can’t catch the pass or can’t hit open shots.

by Ryan243 on Feb 17, 2010 11:00 PM EST reply actions

Listen up:
You guys have well covered the holy trinity of disaster:
CLEE, YI, KIKI. no doubt, the triad of lame.

But take a closer look. Despite a good game at points, Harris proved why he has to change or leave.

With less than 90 seconds left. He made a nice move to the hoop, and with Brooke on his left, in plain view, he went for a dipsy doodle shot w/ 4 arms coming at him…and missed.
Brooke was moving in perfect sync towards the hoop, it would have been a huge jam, and a likely and-1. And Brooke knew it…he was disgusted.
DHARRIS is a very good basketball player who is NOT, I repeat, NOT a Point Guard. Tonight was a shining example.

by Jron on Feb 17, 2010 11:02 PM EST reply actions

A win would have shut up the critics. Yesterday they said the Nets were 3-45 against everyone but the Bobcats. Today they would have said, maybe the Nets wouldn’t be the worst team ever.
Too bad.

However, the trade deadline news is more important.

Lets root against Amare going anywhere and that the Knicks can’t unload Jarad Jeffries. I do hope the Knicks trade Nate to Boston, because he is responsible for many Knicks wins.
Knicks could potentially be worst team in NBA next year if Nets can steal DLee in early July.

by jerry25 on Feb 17, 2010 11:05 PM EST reply actions

LOL…agreed… Sometimes I think Brook Lopez can get incredible easy alley-oops if Harris just threw the ball to the air…

Courtney Lee is horrible and so are Kiki and Yi. Lee can not hit a wide open three the whole game and then he is put back in at the end of the game by the moron Kiki. Yi does not rebound at all and has the worst hands in the league. The Nets should bring up d leaguers and a new coach who actually want to win a basketball game and actually come to the court ready to play with some heart.

by Simon24 on Feb 17, 2010 11:07 PM EST reply actions

I bet the price for McGrady plummets tomorrow, but Houston has no choice but to give him away.

An ESPN reporter thought that McGrady wouldn’t even play the rest of this season? Then why would anyone want him? Knicks were only interested if Houston would take Jarad Jeffries 6.8 million in cap space. Hope that doesn’t go through because then it might be harder to keep DLee.

The Jamison deal to Cavs is good for Nets, because LeBron must win a Championship before he would consider coming to Nets. However, we just learned that Dallas will try to pick up Z if Wizards buy him out (Cavs were hoping to get Z back in one month.

Hey, Gooden, who’s been traded twice this week already, is expected to be released by the Clippers tomorrow. Why don’t the Nets sign him for the rest of the Season? He can definitely help.

by KJV on Feb 17, 2010 11:18 PM EST reply actions

I do agree that Devin should have kicked that ball to Brook. But overall, his play has been VERY good. I don’t think he has a lot of confidence in his team. But to say he’s not a good pt guard is crazy. He’ll be a 17 – 8 guy his entire career. There aren’t many of those guys out there.

by supreme on Feb 17, 2010 11:20 PM EST reply actions

Well all us Nets fans can agree with this, is that there is a sure 100% chance that Yi will not be the starting Power Forward at the start of the 2010-2011 season.

by A.J on Feb 17, 2010 11:33 PM EST reply actions

@KJV
Dallas may pick up Gooden, but they would pick up Z first. I think Dallas would have to wait several more weeks to get Gooden. If Nets took him, he would be pissed. He would lose 1 million per playoff round. I agree though – he is probably better than anyone currently in D-League.

by jerry25 on Feb 17, 2010 11:40 PM EST reply actions

Its really amazing how bad Yi truly is. I don’t think the Nets will ever be able to trade him – as I doubt he has any value around the league.

It will be really disheartening if we are not able to turn a veteran (Battie, Hassell) into at least a 2nd round pick..

The draft can’t get here soon enough!

Yi SUCKKKKKKSSSSSSS! Why on earth do you take the hot players out of the game. Humphries, Dooling and Terrence should have been on the floor. We took a nice lead and they are taken out with like 5 mimutes left in the game? Beasly schooled Yi on every play! He was toying with him.

by JustinNJ on Feb 17, 2010 11:57 PM EST reply actions

Yi is getting to the point of having the same trade value as the equivalent of Sean Williams.

by JustinNJ on Feb 17, 2010 11:58 PM EST reply actions

Blown opportunity! This game hurt more than any other game this season. Why is it that the fans can see what rotations should be on the floor, but, our coach is blind to what those combinations should be. For example, O’Neal is out for over a quarter and Brook is on the bench. Brook not only had the hot hand tonight, but, he could have dominated the smaller lineup. Another example, Wade goes down and instead of keeping Devin in the game to pull away, he sits for almost 10 game minutes. We should have put the dagger in a team that lost two of their best players. The psyche was on our side, but, he sits Brook and Devin extended minutes. It kept Miami in the game. Another example, Beasley runs circles around Yi. Instead of noticing this mismatch he keeps Yi on him all throughout the game. Even if you wanted to give Humphries a breather, atleast have Boone cover Beasley. Humphries was a beast around the rim and frustrated Beasley more on the defensive end.

by JustinNJ on Feb 18, 2010 12:08 AM EST reply actions

This game was lost at SG and SF. Heat 44 Nets 11. Lee bested by Cook 11-2, absolutely horrible. That can’t be blamed on coaching. The Nets almost overcame that deficit but 0-2 at the line by Harris in crunchtime was the beginning of the end. Add the wide open miss by Yi and the easy one in front of the basket by Harris and game over. Those can’t be blamed on coaching either.

by Ispartan on Feb 18, 2010 12:17 AM EST reply actions

Not for nothing, but, I would rather have Sean Williams right now more than Yi. Atleast, he alters and blocks shots, plays defense and hustles. He might not score in bunches, but, he could have slowed down Beasley big time tonight.

by JustinNJ on Feb 18, 2010 12:20 AM EST reply actions

@ Ispartan
I beg to differ this game was lost on the coach as JustinNJ was saying the substitution pattern last night was horrible. Why would you take out Hump T-will and Dooling while we were playing well meshing together and on a roll. Why?, C-lee and Hayes were a combine 1 for like 17. Its not like it was Carmelo or LeBron on the b ench, our starters and bench playgers are about equal talent wise at those positions. You don’t change what’s working. Kiki is lost period that was on him, you ride the hot hands not the cold ones.

by Atronic on Feb 18, 2010 12:26 AM EST reply actions

The game was lost at the power forward position tonight. Beasley man-handled Yi. Not just scoring (23-9), but, intangibles. Courtney Lee was off tonight, all the more reason to keep Dooling in at the 2. Hayes had a bad game as well. Terrence or Hassell should have been in there taking minutes tonight. To me, you ride the hot hand.

okay everytime u yell “YI YOU SUCK” … you need to say it in Mandarin or watevea dialect Yi Speaks…he honestly has the worst hands i’ve ever seen…. I’d take a team of 5 Jason Collins than see Yi play ….

by blazin pp face on Feb 18, 2010 12:32 AM EST reply actions

This team can’t hit shots consistently, especially toward the end of the game. Harris’s wide-open 4-foot miss was horrendous. That looked like a flat-out choke job. And I like his game sometimes and know he’s hit buzzer-beaters…last year. So, I won’t blame him too much.
Basically, there’s no sense of who the go-to guy is. Not sure you can force it in to Lopez in those game-ending situations. It’s some random jumble of Hayes, Dooling, Harris..whoever can get open.
Ideally, it would be Yi. He’s supposed to be the marksman. But. He. Sucks. Not a consistent scorer and can’t do the other things to be on the court when the game is tight and near the end. On this team for this season, could you maybe try Quinn? Is he maybe the best shooter? Or is he also just gonna get abused on the defensive end late in games?
Why do I even worry about this season? Only because I want to avoid the worst-ever record.

please read the article in Time magazine about Jeremy Lin. A good college player, but can’t get scholarship from any university. The reason is that he is from Asia. http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1951044,00.html

Jeremy Lin manned up and became a beast at Harvard. Yi is currently withering away with nothing positive in sight.

@Ispartan…you’re one of those stats-only type fans, huh? Humphries played better D on Beasley and was a great rebounder. TWill, yet again, was extremely aggressive offensively – he pushed the ball up the floor, made great passes and played a smart game. He has a great ability to make quick passes and find open players in scoring position. He’s playing great and is a player that needs to be on the floor a little bit more. Shooting was poor from top to bottom with the Nets so don’t use those silly stats to discredit TWill and Hump tonight.

And Lin is definitely a great second round pick, could be a JJ Barea-type of player – a second rounder from a smaller program that can flat out ball.

yea we suck from the inside out.

The team has no direction.

Isnt that what Chris Bosh said?

No wonder no FA are coming here we cant even pull off a trade lmao wtf?

Blame YI or E or whateva the anouncers call him. Blame Lee or Hayes just make sure u blame 1 person.

Smp369, are you kidding me? I only pointed out the stats to show how there is lots of blame to go around and that TWill and Hump were not blameless and don’t deserve much praise for their performance. Yes, I like Hump on the boards, yes TWill can put some pressure on in transition. But both of those guys make me wince with their mistakes. Does Twill need to blow a slam dunk every game since he didn’t get to show off in the AS game? He throws a bad turnover for every great pass. Why does Hump think he can shoot or pass? Just get the boards, don’t force bad shots, Hump!

You win as a team and lose as a team. The Nets lose even when Yi and C. Lee are not playing. If Harris, Humphries, Lopez, T-Will and Dooling where so good, we should of won by 20pts.

The way I see it we are on he way to clinching the #1 chance of getting the top picks. Plus the 1st pick of the second round. Even in bad times you got to look for some positives.

Everything go right to Yi even he being taking less shots lately. Even he was 3/7, 9 boards, 2 ast (should be more) and 1 block.

No one even saying anything about Hump 1/7 & Clee 0/9???

Hump got his shot block late in the 4th and no body say a thing about it.

Only saw the second half but the substitution decisions were awful, Harris was horrendous, more turnovers than anything else. Yi was an embarrassment.

by mt57 on Feb 18, 2010 9:38 AM EST reply actions

yes – Hump 1/7 & Clee 0/9 – that’s the problem, not Yi. at least Hump is not supposed to be a scorer and has good rebounding #s. Lee sucks – 1 good game out of every 10

by drmagoo on Feb 18, 2010 10:05 AM EST reply actions

I blame much of this loss on Kiki. The Nets were on a roll in the 1st quarter, and Devis was in the zone. Then he yankes Devin with 2 minutes left in the 1st quarter for rest, but then does not put him back in until under 5 minutes to go in the 2nd. And by then, the Nets were down by 5 and were flat. Why would you sit down at guy who had 12 points, was hitting everything, for 9 minutes of game action? Insane.

by Adam II on Feb 18, 2010 10:41 AM EST reply actions

Uhhhhhhhh @ Drmaggooo and Nets nets nets are you guys forgetting Yi’s terrible terrible terrible defense? and that awful jumper he took late in the game. Humphries was bad offesnively but he is man enough to play defense.
