Woj: Don't Count Nets Out of LeBron Sweepstakes

Adrian Wojnarowski spent some time on the WFAN Tuesday talking about trades, then where LeBron James will wind up, emphatically saying, "the Nets will be in this...don't count the Nets out". James, he said, is about "the brand". He "wants to be Jay-Z". One big factor is Mikhail Prokhorov, another John Wall, who Woj noted LeBron is recruiting for his marketing company. The problem: Would he play two years in Newark?

The only problem with this is that the Nets have to take Wall if they get the number 1 pick. They can’t afford to take Turner as it might cost them a chance at Lebron.
I truly believe (and have believed) that if Lebron leaves Cleveland he is coming to Jersey. We have a much better young core than the Knicks. If you want to win championships – you need to go where the core is in place. We have that (1 of whom is a franchise type big). Ask Kobe how it works out without a franchise center.

Wherever LeBron goes he can win. The Cavs supporting roster is simply not much. In fact I think the current Nets with LeBron are a better team than the Cavs with LeBron.
Add another free agent, a coach, and a top pick and you have a championship contender
by supernetsfan on Feb 17, 2010 12:34 AM EST reply actions
Lets assume we get a top 4 pick in the draft (thats essentially a given).
We will end up with either John Wall, Evan Turner, DeMarcus Cousins or maybe Derrick Favors.
For agruments sake – lets say its the top pick and is Wall. Nets would have starting back court of Wall and Harris with Brook the starting center. We would also have a young bench of Lee, CDR, TWill, Hump, Dallas pick, our second rounder and possibly Hayes, Boone, Dooling and Yi.
Not sure there is another team in the league in the running for Lebron that could offer as much potential to build a true dynasty. No key player on our squad would be older than 26 at the start of the season. That is how teams contend for championships for a 5-8 year period.
Add Lebron to that starting lineup – and you could start any of us at the PF and we would be the favorites to win the East.

No way is LeBron leaving Cleveland. He doesn’t need to go anywhere else to be a “brand”.

I honestly believe the Nets fortunes are most directly tied to the fate of Dallas over the remaining 29 games.
If Dallas fails to make the playoffs and we end up with 2 lottery picks everything changes. With the amount of picks we have in future years and Proky’s money – its not inconceivable that we are able to add 2 of the top 7 players in the draft (preferrably a guard like Wall or Turner and a PF like Cousins).
If that ends up being the case – I don’t think Lebron can turn down a max deal from the Nets. The money, the marketing opportunities and the opportunity to be the face of the new Brooklyn franchise and win championships in the process is too great to turn down.
by Ryan243 on Feb 17, 2010 12:47 AM EST reply actions
WOJ made a great point. If Lebron is serious enough about the Nets he can sign a minor deal with Cleveland until the Brooklyn arena is built and then sign with us in the future. Great teams are not built over night. But that only goes for if Cleveland wins the NBA Title. If they don’t then Lebron have all the right in the world to wanna leave and go to a championship contender. But if they win how would that look they gave him his championship then he up and leaves for money he’ll be consider a bad guy (trader) and that wouldn’t fit good for his name. So everything really has to do with Cleveland winning the NBA Title or not.

as for me, i will just get a good night’s sleep…after like a hundred of those, all questions will be answered:
1. are we getting the #1 pick?
2. where is the mavs’ pick at?
3. is lebron or another all-star coming to nj?
i refuse to lose any sleep over these questions since speculating on them won’t make us win the lottery, make the mavs’ pick higher and make lebron come to nj.

Just wondering because i don’t really follow college basketball that closely… for arguments sake, lets say we get the #2 pick… is there anyone out there that is a standout that we definitely should take, or would it make more sense to trade the pick.

Are you sure Wall is better than Turner? As far as im concerned, Wall might be the concensus number 1 pick but that doesnt mean he’s better than Turner. It’s all about the hype on why fans thinks Wall is better. Sure, he looks good when he plays, when he shows his emotions but dont disregard the fact that Turner is more of a versatile player. He does everything and very unselfish. I feel like he can score more if he wants to but like i said he is not selfish.
Also, Favors as a 2nd overall pick?? Ewww! If that’s the case then please just give us the 3rd pick. There’s no way we’re drafting that overrated bum because clearly DeMarcus Cousins is wayyyy better than him. I got tired watching that Favors, waiting for his promising moves, i never saw it and i waited for nothing. In fact, as of right now, wether you guys like it or not, i might pick Cousins ahead of Wall, but Turner still would be my top choice.
I know many will disagree with my take on this but i will not let myself follow this hype… Sorry Wall!

My personal top 4:
1a) Wall
1b) Turner
3a) Cousins
3b) Aldridge
I think I’d take Cole over Cousins.
A) He’s a defensive monster
B) He has a great mid-range game
C) He isn’t a head case
D) Would mesh perfectly with Brook.

Cleveland is a dump, I used to live in Ohio(Shaker Heights area) when I was a kid before moving out here in 1990. I don’t know how Lebron does it but to some folks, home is home.

LeBron grew up in Cleveland so it doesn’t matter about all that, secondly if he comes to the Nets he won’t be living in Newark, probably Edgewater, maybe Manhattan but I doubt it. That’s why I don’t understand it’s not like he’s going to be playing in Plainfiels NJ Newark close 2 Manhattan and NY. So we definately have a shot, u know Jay-Z has talked to him and will about Nets. He’s tthe best barganing tool anybody will have next year because he has LeBron’s ear. He’ll probly make a song about it to if we land LeBron, it’ll be the Nets theme song lol.

I heard the interview yesterday. Nothing he said about LBJ coming here holds any weight because it was all pure speculation, the only thing he said that held weight was that Lebron wants to become a global brand and that winning makes that brand larger. That doesn’t mean he will come here, especially if Cleveland wins and makes moves to keep him surrounded with talent.
by Mr. Dollar Bills on Feb 17, 2010 7:39 AM EST reply actions
There is no chance the LEBRON signs with us in NJ. If it were four years from now, and we were a playoff team in Brooklyn, maybe there would be a chance. LEBRON is, and wants to be seen as a good guy. He wouldn’t look like a good guy, if he left The Cavs this summer and signed up for our mess, just to be a stone’s throw to Manhattan. The Knicks might have a better chance to sign him, but that is doubtful too. Chris Bosh will be the big time FA that signs elsewhere this summer, and maybe Joe Johnson too. Second tier FA signings will be Lee and Nate.

How is playing in Newark a problem when it is only 5 miles from midtown Manhattan?
It’s not a problem for big time free agent football players to play in the swamplands of the Meadowlands Stadium right?
The Rock is an AWESOME arena that is easily accessible by mass transit and by auto. Plenty of parking lots, restaurants/bars within walking distance, a safe area on event nights with a good police prescense for the wimps.
I would think Brooklyn is a worse choice than Newark anyways. And Cleveland is a dump, I’ve been there twice, not impressed.
Lebron should sign with the Nets, The Rock would be sold out the entire season.

As long as Kobe is healthy “NO” team is beating the Lakers in the Finals. So no championship for Cleveland this year sorry.
by Mikee21 on Feb 17, 2010 9:32 AM EST reply actions
I have always thought we had a decent chance at Lebron, but that it would be unlikely. Despite the horrid year we have had, the cementing of a future in Brooklyn and being bought by one of the richest men in the world and someone committed to winning at the highest levels, only enhances our chances at Lebron. Every individual is different and just because Lebron has a great thing going for him in Cleveland does not mean he is necessarily satisfied with his position. Size 0 supermodels can think they are fat, millionaires can think they are barely getting by, and global icons can think they are underexposed. Lets see who the Nets get at draft time, who they hire as a coach, and what Prokho has up his sleeve for recruitment. Building on yesterday’s win and playing better the rest of the way can only help as well.

I’m not sure where you’re getting that from, the Cavs have SPANKED the Lakers twice this season. As for Kobe, he’s not going to be healthy (at least not the finger) so I’d say the Cavs have a legitimate shot.

All this talk of IFs and IF Nots. All I have to say if we get the #1 pick, YOU have to go with Wall. I have become a quick fan of Turner. IMO Turner is better then Wall right NOW, but Wall has so much potential he is being pushed as the #1 pick. We really havent seen what Wall can do because Kentucky is stacked with very good players. Turner has proven that he is Ready. The question with Turner is Does he have good players or does he make the players around him better? When u compare the teams Wall has better players around him. Bledsoe would be a lottery pick if Wall wasnt there.

The last two time the Cavs played the Lakers Kobe was nowhere near healthy. That may not change come play-off time but with a Healthy Gasol, Kobe and Odom coming off the Bench the Cavs not beating the lakers 7 games.

Even if we were in Brooklyn (which I oppose greatly) he would not come to a team that just won less than 10 games this year. How could he explain coming to such a losing situation? Now I do like our future with Brook, our young core, the potential top three pick and a new owner who is filthy rich and has a vested interest in the team. But, I still think there would be too many question marks to jump the Cleveland ship. I know we could be very good in the near future, but, that will be a hard sell next year. That being said, the only way he goes to the Knicks is if they could get one of the other big name free agents such as Bosh or Wade. If they just try for Lebron he will say no thank you because the Knicks have nothing on their current roster to get excited about.

I’m a little bit tired of LeBron James. I really don’t care what he does at this point. Drafting Wall just because he’s close to LeBron is stupid, if you consider Turner or Cousins the better player or fit.
Hiring coaches that LeBron likes is also moronic.
If LeBron wants to play for the Nets, great. But begging, pleading, trying to please the “Great King” and his every whim, is getting boring and old, real quick.
Be careful for what you wish for…

One should not say Lebron is never coming to teh Nets.
One can say Lebron is unlikely to come to the Nets for whatever reason… b ut unless you are Lebron himself and you know what is going on, why do you say “never” so definitively?
Would you wager your life savings and your significant other(if you have one?) on it? Didn’t think so.
Anyway, Newark is a total dump. Aside from the few tall building sthat look kind of nice, that whole place is a dilapidated slum yard of projects. Why would Lebron go there? I drive by Orange and Newark ont oteh way to the Holland Tunnel often and it is a mess over there.

You cite a typo, obviously typed in haste, as a major error. There are no egregious grammatical mistakes present in my sentence.
Perhaps “and it is a mess over there” is not a proper dependent clause and I should have created a new sentence afterward.
Moreover, you exhibit specious logic when you are trying to argue that Lebron would rather go to the Knicks just because he is from Cleveland. Now THAT is a logical error.

by Ryan243 on Feb 17, 2010 1:32 PM EST reply actions
SB Nation is a collection of team/sport specific blogs. So rather than going to one site for your favorite football team, a different site for your favorite baseball team another site for your favorite basketball team and another site for in depth analysis on other aspects of a sports, and etc, you can have access to multiple, and usually super active and quality blogs, on one site with one login. So it’s more streamlined and organized, and you once you login whenever you post a comment on any of the blogs you won’t have to put in your email/name everytime. Also it’s more fan interactive as users can post articles they find under fanshots or they’re own analysis/ideas under fanposts.
And linking it to your fb shouldn’t mean nets daily posts will be on your fb wall, just that you can share posts if you have a lot of friends who are nets fans, from the blog and also share comments you post.

Not a bunch of Tattoo covered attitude cases that don’t listen to the coach, that are all about their touches, their minutes, and their contracts.
They say the NBA is a players league. What that really means is that a guy who’s getting paid $18 million a year can tell his coach to drop dead and then laugh in his face. All a coach can do is try to figure out ways to motivate their stable of millionaire spoiled brats.
