Deadline Deals Could Yield D-League Call-Ups

With eight expiring contracts of one kind or another, the Nets should be a player, if only as a third team, in deadline deals. "Somebody could call looking for an expiring contract and then we'd be in business," Rod Thorn said Tuesday. If things don't work out, writes Al Iannazzone, expect vets, like Tony Battie and Trenton Hassell, to seek buyouts so they can sign elsewhere...and the Nets to audition D-League players.

If I’m a contending team, I would look to steal away Hayes & Dooling.

pathetic! Can we get a jump on 2010 FA and grab one now? I can’t believe they have all these assetts and are only thinking of D-leaguers. Get rid of Yi, fast, before everyone else realizes how bad he is and how unlikely his potential is. Someone must need a defender like Hassel, a shooter like Simmons, a Big like Battie or Boone. Be creative guys.

by geo on Feb 17, 2010 8:57 AM EST reply actions

agreed…i dont want them to go though…they are both great veterans who are difference makers off the bench. However, they’re both injury prone.

by Andy on Feb 17, 2010 8:58 AM EST reply actions

I doubt they release either of them. The candidates are Simmons, Battie, Boone and Hassell. The latter three have value. The question is how many contenders will have roster spots and how many of them are far enough away from the luxury tax to permit them to sign someone.

geo…at one point this season yi was averaging close to 17ppg…that was our chance to trade him.

by Andy on Feb 17, 2010 8:59 AM EST reply actions

So was CDR averaging 17

by ronnie on Feb 17, 2010 9:05 AM EST reply actions

I hope we keep JB & The Capital. Release Battie and Simmons.

by Andres on Feb 17, 2010 9:05 AM EST reply actions

so im guessing his value was higher then also…

by Andy on Feb 17, 2010 9:09 AM EST reply actions

Josh Boone could be a solid backup, and I don’t think we should give up on him.

Lopez, Yi, Humphires, Boone

are enough to play.

by jarkid on Feb 17, 2010 10:15 AM EST reply actions

I think Boone may have been played last night to showcase him. I think Boone understood that too.

by Net Income on Feb 17, 2010 11:20 AM EST reply actions

I think that Boone wants to stay in NJ and really hopes he is back here next year. That is more than a hunch.

And that dunk TWill had last night on the break taking off from the foul line would have been enough to get him to the finals of the dunk contest. What a sham that competition was – and if the NBA wants to make it a top tier event again – they should welcome added participants like TWill to make it exciting.

MArcus Williams sighting…‘full court!’ Holla!

by Jron on Feb 17, 2010 12:06 PM EST reply actions

I agree that Hayes and Dooling are the most attractive vets we have but I really hope we don’t get rid of them because I think they are both major assets to this team. They are hard workers who provide a much needed spark off the bench and both of them WANT to be here. I’d also hate to see Hassel go the way of a buyout. I don’t think he’s as essential as Hayes or Dooling but he’s been a consistent contributor especially on the defensive end during his time here. I’d love to see him stay too. I’d say the prime candidates for buyouts are especially Simmons and Battie, since we barely use them anyway.

by KFranchise on Feb 17, 2010 12:09 PM EST reply actions

Dwayne Jones please, he’s a really good rebounder at worst.

Mike Harris is someone we should audition as well, he’s already somewhat proven

by muwu on Feb 17, 2010 1:03 PM EST reply actions

To purge the veterans on this team would be absolute chaos. We have already seen how this team operates without heavy veteran leadership….Honestly, this could be one of the only reasons Rod is unwilling to simply buy out or dump guys at the deadline.

by Ryan243 on Feb 17, 2010 1:28 PM EST reply actions

I can’t imagine many of the big name 2010 FA’s are going to want to come here unless we’re adding, or have already added, at least one other big name or several strong pieces. We have a lot of potential/talent but it’s mostly in 2-3 players, and have kind of awful depth. If we want to entice a big name in the off-season we’re going to have to start accumulating qualities pieces and the only way to do that at this point is using our expiring contracts to get some better role player/2nd tier types.

by Gina on Feb 17, 2010 1:28 PM EST reply actions

Gina I tend to agree but that is why I feel this Dallas pick is the big wild card for this franchise. We have a very good idea of who we will end up with using our pick – but if that Dallas pick ends up in the lottery – and with our future assets – it is not inconceivable that we could trade up into the top 5-7 to get our PF of the future, this franchise becomes a lot more appealing to a big time free agent. Granted it will be a young team, but a young team loaded with young lottery picks.

And the Nets have done a good job in stockpiling young athletic versatile wing players (Lee, TWill, CDR) which really helps bench depth. And there is no reason why our 2nd round pick (if we keep it) shouldn’t net a player capable of giving us 10 minutes a night off the bench next season.

by Ryan243 on Feb 17, 2010 2:44 PM EST reply actions

Whoa Ryan Whoa….chaos???

Have you been watching what our fancy veterans have done this year with their leadership? 5 wins. Could it get any worse without them? No.

These rookies don’t follow the current veterans on this team, like Harris who has no leadership ability, or Simmons and Battie who are sleepwalking. C’mon dude! It’s not like Zo, Garnett, MJ, or LeBron are in the room.

by My 2 ¢ LOL on Feb 17, 2010 2:47 PM EST reply actions

Ryan I agree they’ve done a decent job of stockpiling talent/potential, but if we’re talking about enticing FA’s this off-season they’re going to want to think the Nets can contend in 2010 & 2011, not 2011-2013. And we’ll need some more proven NBA talent, not necessarily stars but at least solid NBA regulars, for that to happen.

by Gina on Feb 17, 2010 2:50 PM EST reply actions

haha on veteran leadership. I think Dooling, Hayes, Harris, Boone and Hassel command some respect. Battie and Simmons are just lead weights around this franchise at this point.

As for enticing free agents – much of it will always come down to the money. And that is something this team will finally have. They have done a nice job of putting together a young core and will add 2-3 more pieces in the draft.

Use the remaining money on a few quality veterans and its not a stretch for a big time guy to consider the Nets an appealing opportunity. Money always talks.

Best shot we got is Suns-Miami trade Suns don’t want that massive contract of Jermaine, We could take Jermaine and give the Suns Bobby Simmons, give back Miami payroll in Trenton Hassell and Tony Battie, and maybe we could come out with a Wright, or Cook or Chalmers along with Jermaine.

by jj on Feb 17, 2010 3:26 PM EST reply actions

My last trade comment if nets don’t make a move by tomorrow:
Miami Gets:
A’mare
Battie
Hassell

Suns Get:
Beasley
Chalmers
Simmons
Plus Pick (1st)

Nets Get:
O’neal
Collins
Griffin

The thought deal for Miami-Suns trade was O’neal, Beasely, Chalmers plus pick——-Amare,expiring Contracts but Suns dont wont to give up to many players in any deal and don’t have big money expiring contracts anyway. According to sources.

Oneal could be a mentor for Lopez and maybe even resign him for next year, if everything works out. Nets pus 6 in NBA TRADE MACHINE ESPN.

Good deal or not?

by jj on Feb 17, 2010 3:53 PM EST reply actions

If you are counting on that trade happening… never mind.

by Mike on Feb 17, 2010 3:56 PM EST reply actions

@ Ryan, while we do have a ton of cap room I believe their current teams can go over the cap to resign them. And, at least when talking about Lebron/D-wade, I don’t think there’s any chance they wouldn’t match any offer no matter how far over the cap it took them, so we’d have to prove we’d be offering them a better chance to win also.

Bingo, and at this point, no one is going to think that a 5-48 team is going to offer them a better chance to win.

David Lee and Rudy Gay seem like feasible targets, but we’re going to have to overpay and it might be a mistake.

Fujian SBS XunXin sign Sean Williams – Feb 16, 2010 (by Eurobasket)

Fujian SBS XunXin added to their roster 24-year old American forward Sean Williams (208-F-86, college: Boston Coll.). Williams played most recently at New Jersey Nets (NBA) in the U.S. While playing 20 games for New Jersey N. this season he averaged 2.6ppg and 2.3rpg. previously, Sean was awarded NBA All-Star Game All-Rookies Team -08 in his first game with Fijian, Willimas played 44 mintues and scored 21 points, 16 rebounds and 4 blocks

Maybe we can trade Yi for this guy Williams. LOL

by Mike on Feb 18, 2010 11:20 AM EST reply actions

I bet Sean Williams is a better player in the Chinese League than Yi Jianlian would be.

At least if Sean was still a Net, he would be used as a role player.
