With Little News from Vancouver, Nets Speak of Other Things

Rod Thorn's still in Vancouver, talking with Mikhail Prokhorov about getting the team out of this God-awful mess. So there's little trade talk. Instead, Nets players spoke of meeting Goofy at DisneyWorld (Devin Harris), missed dunking opportunities (Terrence Williams) and who'll deliver that Domino's Pizza (Betting is on CDR). No one's talking about Kris Humphries appearance in a fashion show for Joseph Abboud. Very natty.

@diehardNFFLbarnone;

You are not allowed to quit now. The best part is coming up.

by Mike on Feb 16, 2010 3:09 PM EST reply actions

You keep saying that Mike, i’ll keep saying duke could beat the Nets right now

by Christos on Feb 16, 2010 3:11 PM EST reply actions

@Mike— Yeah, one good draft pick followed by five years of nothing, a mid-level free agent like Joe Johnson, and another fine coach in the tradition of Byron, LFrank, and Kiki. If we don’t luck in to Wall or Turner we’ll be lucky to crack .500 in the next 5 years.

by calling all toasters on Feb 16, 2010 3:12 PM EST reply actions

what i have been saying is i would like whoever we pick, johnson at the three and boozer at the four

by Christos on Feb 16, 2010 3:15 PM EST reply actions

I have a funny feeling something big is cooking. I dunno maybe I’m being optimistic but I’m still getting that feeling.

by Special_Delivery on Feb 16, 2010 3:16 PM EST reply actions

thorns ass

by Christos on Feb 16, 2010 3:16 PM EST reply actions

I want wall, stoudemire and Johnson. I’d be overjoyed with them.

by Special_Delivery on Feb 16, 2010 3:17 PM EST reply actions

im relieved abnout the number 1 pick thing. we can drop to 2 and that decision is even easier. how many times have we seen two great players drafted 1 and 2 and the second turns out to be a blessing that he dropped?

imaginei if portanland had durant instead of oden. they would be UNSTOPPABLE!

by i on Feb 16, 2010 3:18 PM EST reply actions

@i but portland needed the center. who would be their starter right now? joel pryzyzyzyzyzya?

by Christos on Feb 16, 2010 3:19 PM EST reply actions

Lol yea it’s thorns ass that’s why I’m getting a good feeling about something great happening. Let’s be real tho, thorns hands have been tied up for 6 years now. Change is coming. Let’s pray it happens before Thursday.

by Special_Delivery on Feb 16, 2010 3:20 PM EST reply actions

“They hoped to use the likes of Bobby Simmons ($11.24 million) and Tony Battie ($6.6 million) in case they could get a good player who makes big money – perhaps an Amar’e Stoudemire – and the other team wanted expiring contracts back. That hasn’t presented itself yet.”

What are they smoking? Even in this market, no one is going to give away a star just for expiring contracts. And the few teams that are interested in doing so have players with unfavorable contracts.

Do they think we are the only team with large expiring deals?

This is the SOS we’ve been hearing for 3+ years, “if we can get a bargain, then we’ll make a trade” otherwise its business as usual.

by brian on Feb 16, 2010 3:21 PM EST reply actions

Yi of little faith. LMAO

by Mike on Feb 16, 2010 3:21 PM EST reply actions

ASpecial Delivery: “Let’s be real tho, thorns hands have been tied up for 6 years now.”

I don’t think Ratner made him draft poorly or hire bad coaches. Thorn has got to go for us to see the big turharound we’re hoping for.

by calling all toasters on Feb 16, 2010 3:22 PM EST reply actions

Transformative players…People saying Wall is the most transformative player since LeBron. Well, they forgot that Oden was supposed to be Bill Russell.

You forgot the #3 pick. The 2001 draft: Kwame, Tyson, Pau Gasol; Or the #3 and #4 pick. The 2005 draft: Bogut, M. Williams, Deron Williams, Chris Paul.

by Net Income on Feb 16, 2010 3:23 PM EST reply actions

if we fall to #3 or 4 im all in on favors

by Christos on Feb 16, 2010 3:26 PM EST reply actions

Drafting bad players I can agree with but hiring coaches costs money so that falls on ratner. Also lopez and CDR made up for a crapload of draft mistakes but overall it’s still been bad I agree.

by Special_Delivery on Feb 16, 2010 3:27 PM EST reply actions

How can you come so far to give up now. In just a few months all will be revealed.

by Mike on Feb 16, 2010 3:28 PM EST reply actions

june when we get the fourth pick? fun

by Christos on Feb 16, 2010 3:29 PM EST reply actions

-I don’t even understand the thinking here in doing nothing. If Cleveland gets Amare, then Lebron is staying put.

-If the knicks make the T-Mac trade then David Lee is off the market also. Plus the knicks have money to sign at least 1 other big name free agent.

-Bosh and Joe Johnson think the Nets are a joke.

-That leaves only D-Wade and if he leaves Miami at all he is not coming to the nets. Or Rudi Gay, who they will have to over pay, is not a leader, and makes the team marginally better at best.

It seems to me that with 4 wins and rapidly diminishing free agent options, the Nets should not be standing pat. NI I would love your take about what the hell Rod could be thinking at this point?

by TheHammer on Feb 16, 2010 3:34 PM EST reply actions

Lopez and CDR were excellent picks, but Kiki is almost certainly going and the ability to draft intelligently is going with him.

by calling all toasters on Feb 16, 2010 3:36 PM EST reply actions

Lopez, CDR, and Ryan Anderson was the prolly the best draft weve ever hadin terms of getting talent using late picks.

by i on Feb 16, 2010 3:46 PM EST reply actions

Oh, I forgot to add “haha”.

by Dirt on Feb 16, 2010 3:53 PM EST reply actions

Kiki is destroying CDR. I’d love to not have him around to ruin our draft picks. Also who doesn’t know that Yi is a bench player or worse by now? Just Kiki apparently. I can’t wait to see them both hit the D League.

by Special_Delivery on Feb 16, 2010 4:16 PM EST reply actions

If I were proky id do this:
Hire mike fratello as interim head coach for remainder of year. Focus on development of young players and change losing culture.

Fire thorn. I’d keep kiki in front office as gm. He is much better talent evaluator in terms of drafting players. That’s of utmost importance with all our draft picks over next few years. Hire colangelo as president simply for change of voice and connections to usa bball and Olympic program. Ie. Lebron, wade, coach k, etc.

by ryan243 on Feb 16, 2010 4:30 PM EST reply actions

@Special_Delivery
There is plenty of blame to go around.

by Net Income on Feb 16, 2010 4:37 PM EST reply actions

I personally dont want any part of Amare and/or Joe Johnson. I would rather go the Portland route. We should target young players through the draft or draft day trades. After watching a few Ohio State games, Turner is becoming my favorite. Though if we have the #1 pick it is hard to not pick Wall, but If there is a possibility to get two top lottery picks I would trade it. lets say T-wolves get #2 we get #1, I would consider trying to trade #1 pick for their #2(Turner) and #17(Charlotte pick) and maybe even try to pry Rubio from them too.

by SIC on Feb 16, 2010 4:42 PM EST reply actions

Best post by Julian Garcia after a long time. He is the worst of the beat writers.

by Tony on Feb 16, 2010 5:20 PM EST reply actions

I would be fine with either Wall or Turner, but I am keen towards Turner whose skills would actually fit in well with Harris, if we decide to keep him. A Wall/Harris backcourt would be a nightmare because Harris is one of the 5 worst defenders in the NBA and Harris would have to defend the SG’s(since i doubt Wall is 6’4 like they say).

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Feb 16, 2010 5:35 PM EST reply actions

I’m not reading any of the articles until I hear from Dave D., who is 3 hours behind in Vancouver. Maybe an interview with Proky, if Thorn puts in a good word.

Amare has to go before the deadline, so scratch him off the list. If he goes to Cleveland, also scratch LeBron coming in 2011. Best Nets can do is figure out a way to get All Star DLee away from Knicks. Otherwise they battle for Boozer, who would rather go to Miami.

The future looks bleak and could be worse by Thursday evening.

What kind of Bull is Thorn feeding Proky? If he was honest, he would say that we have to trade Yi for a real PF by Thursday or there is little hope for the future.

Didn’t Proky say he watches some of the Nets games? Does he get DVD’s? Torture is still allowed in former Soviet Union! He should already know about Yi’s defense, being a former PF himself.

by jerry25 on Feb 16, 2010 5:43 PM EST reply actions

I think getting wall or turner would be great. I do believe Harris is part of solution and trading him would be huge mistake. Turner prob a better fit next year with devin and brook but wall may be better talent. Unfortunately that Dallas pick prob got less valuable after that trade.

Would like to see us turn Simmons expiring contract into iguodala. He’s extremely versatile and could be plugged in at 2-4. Also saves us from walking away with nothing in free agency while he still could thrive next to Lebron. He could play the sg with Lebron at sf and would give us plenty of options with draft. Would let us take wall or turner as guard depth or even let us go harris, wall or turner, ai, Lebron at pf and brook at center. Bench then is lee, cdr, twill, hump and Dallas pick and second rounder. That’s a deep team

by ryan243 on Feb 16, 2010 5:56 PM EST reply actions

Anyone know why Clippers are trying to trade Al Thornton? Isn’t he better than anyone on Nets at SF?

ESPN Insider rumors has something about Jefferson for Luol Deng. Is that Richard or Al Jefferson??
Anyone with ESPN Insider who can elaborate on these trade rumors?

If Thorn has the nerve, he would tell Proky that Cash and draft picks are needed to interest another team in any Nets player before deadline.

If the Nets name doesn’t come up in the News in 24 hours, chances are there will be no activity.

by jerry25 on Feb 16, 2010 6:01 PM EST reply actions

The biggest farce of the possible trades involves Tracy McGrady. ESPN NEWS reported that McGrady might not be able to play at all this year! Yet Houston expects Knicks or Wizards to give several decent players for the right to keep McGrady (and his 22 million salary) on the bench for the rest of the season and have the opportunity to re-sign him for MegaBucks next year with the hope he plus his HUGE Ego can play next year.

I predict in the end, Houston will have to beg to give him away. I wouldn’t offer Hassel for McGrady if he couldn’t play. Maybe Hassel+Battie+Simmons, only if it freed up a spot for a D-Leaguer!

Probably best chance for Nets is for them to facilitate Houston in giving away McGrady to another team. Maybe Nets get a 2nd round pick.

by jerry25 on Feb 16, 2010 6:05 PM EST reply actions

@ jerry25 – It’s the Timberwolves.

by diehardNFFLbarnone on Feb 16, 2010 6:05 PM EST reply actions

@ ryan243 – Andre Iguodala is going to Cleveland.

by diehardNFFLbarnone on Feb 16, 2010 6:06 PM EST reply actions

I’d be happy to also see nets make an effort to get involved as third team in amare sweepstakes offering Yi and a 2nd rounder or expiring for either robin lopez or beasley. They don’t need to hit a homerun but going after iguodala and either lopez or beasley would be huge step for this team. Adding 1 or 2 nice complementary pieces before the draft will be very. Positive going into free agency

by ryan243 on Feb 16, 2010 6:11 PM EST reply actions

What sucks is we have much better pieces to get iguodala from philly than any other team rumored to be making a play for him.

by ryan243 on Feb 16, 2010 6:14 PM EST reply actions

Anything but Amare to Cleveland.
Amare would still be FA this summer.
It would be risky for any team but Cleveland or Miami to take on Amare.

I would be real upset to learn that Thorn is not making calls from Vancouver. Mikhail could see Rod in action as his cell phone keeps ringing for help with expirings.

by jerry25 on Feb 16, 2010 6:29 PM EST reply actions

Where is AI#2 to Cleveland link? Must be just wishful thinking.

by jerry25 on Feb 16, 2010 6:34 PM EST reply actions

Spurs are trying to get Tyrus Thomas for Antonio McDyess.
Thomas would work well with Spurs, for remainder of year, at least.

Lets face it. The real reason why Yi isn’t being shopped, is that Thorn already knows that no team is interested. That would look bad for public relations if that was known.

by jerry25 on Feb 16, 2010 6:44 PM EST reply actions

Just make a trade, almost any trade (except keep Lopez). I know it’s not the most rational approach, but I want some new players to watch and hope for about 5 or 6 more wins this year.
And I’m starting to lean toward Turner instead of Wall as the pick.

by NetsJetsFan on Feb 16, 2010 7:07 PM EST reply actions

WHY. IS. YI. STILL. STARTING?!?!
He’s a bench guy who gives you quick points or returns to the pine.
Play Hump there, or CDR to go small. I don’t really care.

by NetsJetsFan on Feb 16, 2010 7:12 PM EST reply actions

@ jerry25 – It’s on ESPN.
