Game 53 - Nets @ Bobcats - Tuesday, February 16, 7:00

Okay, enough of this talk about the future! It's back to the present and the attempt to avoid THAT record!! The Nets face the Bobcats, one of four teams they've beaten in Charlotte. Led by All-Star Gerald Wallace and former Net Stevie Jackson, the Bobcats are fighting for a playoff berth, the franchise's first. Neither team has made any deadline moves and Kiki Vandeweghe says even small deals are unlikely now.

Lets get a win!!!! The team should be rested and maybe feel like this is a new shot at being respected in the league.

A new owner is looking at each of these guys.

Hopefully we get a trade done with the Blazers Boone and Battie for Blake and Outlaw.

by jj on Feb 15, 2010 5:16 PM EST reply actions

im gonna be at the game but i don’t see a win the bobcats play great at home AND THEY DON’T WANT TO LOSE TO THE NETS TWICE! i doubt we get a WIN

by matt on Feb 15, 2010 5:19 PM EST reply actions

JJ,
wow. i would LOVE a trade like that, if the blazers were stupid enough. maybe we can be like the thunder of last year.

by i on Feb 15, 2010 5:19 PM EST reply actions

I doubt you will see anything until right before the deadline and I am starting to doubt that. Thorn is in Vancouver with Prokhorov, Kiki is on his way to Charlotte. One possibility is that the Nets get involved in a three way deal, considering their wealth of expiring deals.

Once Thursday passes, expect some of those with expiring deals to be released and then, I expect some D-League call-ups for auditions.

by Net Income on Feb 15, 2010 5:19 PM EST reply actions

I hope we get involved in something….i just hoping something exciting gets done. Thorn has always gotten things done via trade…free agency is not our thing.

by Andy on Feb 15, 2010 5:22 PM EST reply actions

Outlaw is not even playing because he’s hurt and is an expiring contract Batum and Webster are playing good ball and Blake is not playing as well as last year plus Bayless is playing good ball as well as Miller how bout 52 the other game. So there set up If I was Thorn I’ll throw in CDR for Pendegraph to make the deal more interesting.

Harris/Dooling Waive/Keep? Blake
Lee/Williams Waive/Keep? Quinn
Outlaw/Hayes Waive/Keep? Hassell
Humpries/Pendegraph Waive/Keep? Simmons
Lopez/Jianlian

If the Nets don’t get a win in the next 5 games the record will pretty much be a lock. And the next 5 teams are all above or near .500

why do you say the next five games?

Whoops I meant 6. If the Nets lose all 6 of those (all against playoff teams), they would have to win 25% of their remaining games. How likely is that?

by Andy on Feb 15, 2010 9:41 PM EST reply actions

i wouldnt give up CDR to begin with. give him next year where he has a new coach that DOES see his potential and utilizes it. then evaluate him and see the true stud he is. keep young talent and get rid of useless veterans. hope to get top notch free agents and build from there.

next years lineup, wall or tuner, lebron or not, should be young, dynamic, and fun to watch, not piled up with old veterans.

by Nets!Nets!Nets! on Feb 15, 2010 10:48 PM EST reply actions

@jj
I think Hassell would get immediate offers, less so Battie. If CDR is released, as rumored by SI, obviously he will have several, but I doubt that.

There have been reports that the Nets would like to buy players out at a percentage of they are still owed. Boone and Hayes make so little money it wouldnt be worth buying them out. The CDR rumor is that he would be waived outright if not traded. HOWEVER, that’s based on one report, unconfirmed by beat writers.

Eight Nets have varying degrees of expiring contracts. One other Net has a player option that he can exercise, but isn’t likely too.

Simmons, $11.24 million; Battie, $6.61 million; Hassell, $4.35 million; Hayes, $2.06 million; and Quinn, $1.05 million—all have expiring offers, with no strings attached. Dooling, $3.5 million, also has a $500,000 buyout if the team fails to exercise its option by June 29. If he is waived or bought out, he would still get the money next July. CDR also has a team option for $850,000 next season. Boone, $2.056 million, is on the last year of his rookie contract.

In addition, Humphries has a player option for $3.2 million next season.

by smp369 on Feb 16, 2010 2:39 AM EST reply actions

I wouldn’t believe anything about waiving CDR unless it came from Dave D (who is closer to Thorn).

Maybe Kiki is behind the CDR talk, but he no longer has authority. If true, Thorn would be trading CDR at least for a draft pick. He can always be an asset for a Draft day deal to move up. Only if Nets get #1/#2 pick does CDR become expendable. Not clear what would happen if #3/#4 pick.

If Kiki is the problem behind CDR, I would fire Kiki first.

by jerry25 on Feb 16, 2010 7:39 AM EST reply actions

Kiki does not even know what is going on! He does not even know how long he will be here, so why is he even talking about the team’s future? Julian Garcia is clueless. He just writes what he sees other writers writing: “CDR’s production and…..” What seriously? Do you even watch nets games? Better yet, do you even look at the stat sheets? The guys does not play! He is playing 6 mins or less the least few weeks, and he still has better stats than Kiki’s boy Lee!

by KJV on Feb 16, 2010 7:49 AM EST reply actions

Don’t forget other teams will be releasing players.
If Proky is willing to spend $ to avoid history that could be his choice to take someone. We shouldn’t think like Ratner.

I wouldn’t waive Hassell, just Battie and Simmons. If some team would pick up Hassell, then Thorn should work a trade now, and throw in a draft pick.

I also don’t understand why Boone has been benched. Kiki has given Battie PT, but hasn’t proven anything.

by jerry25 on Feb 16, 2010 7:50 AM EST reply actions

@ Jerry25
In Kiki’s world, one does not need to prove themselves. Ex: Yi, Lee, Battie.

“The CDR rumor is that he would be waived outright if not traded. HOWEVER, that’s based on one report, unconfirmed by beat writers.”

The beatwriters don’t need to confirm or dismiss such a stupid report. It’d be utter lunacy to release the kid. It won’t happen. Anyway, Iannazzone already said he doesn’t see that happening. Kerber says the Nets like CDR and he actually talked to Thorn. Dave D said it’s very unlikely we’ll trade the kid, cause you won’t find anybody that talented making so little money, and we won’t make a bigger trade. That’s all I need to read, beatwriters don’t need to address that stupid information Mannix wrote.

by Andres on Feb 16, 2010 8:10 AM EST reply actions

Hassell and Boone shouldn’t be released if they’re not traded. They’re good team players. Who knows, we could bring them back next season to fill the last roster spots once we make the big moves. Josh should be getting PT ahead of Battie, who should be waived along with Simmons after the deadline if we’re unable to move them.

by jerry25 on Feb 16, 2010 8:56 AM EST reply actions

Six teams with questions down the stretch article, Fox Sports:

“Most league observers agree that while they’re pitifully young, the Nets have enough good players to win at least a bit more often. With new ownership moving in and cap room aplenty due this summer, upper management (that’s president Rod Thorn) must decide if these players are developing under Kiki or getting gun shy through all of the beat downs.”

That’s a hard one for Thorn to decide??

Wonder if CDR gets minutes tonite?

by Jeff on Feb 16, 2010 9:22 AM EST reply actions

Why don’t Clippers want Al Thornton? Isn’t he better than anything Nets have at SF?

I guess Camby won’t be looking for permanent residence in Portland. Add him to the list of FA big men this summer.

by jerry25 on Feb 16, 2010 9:23 AM EST reply actions

Camby deal isn’t done. They are waiting for offers from Miami, Denver and elsewhere.

Please offer Yi, Hassel + draft pick + cash for Camby. I’m sure his family would like the Newark schools and re-sign (LOL).

Lee proved himself in last year’s playoffs."

And this year, what has he proven? Well, lets see: he’s a very decent defender, nothing that screams all NBA or shut down defender, hustles on defense, and offensively, for the better part of the year, he has been god awful. This is what courtney lee has proven, after being hyped all off season long as some kind of all star just waiting to explode. He’s a bench player on a better team, just like everyone else on this roster not named Lopez or Harris.

Andres, I agree with you 100%.

My observations for what it’s worth:

Team oriented players usually will not look good on a bad team, while “me” first, selfish players will look very good on a bad team.

by Mike on Feb 16, 2010 9:48 AM EST reply actions

Trading for “stop gap” players at this point is senseless. If we break the most losses record, so be it. Giving up valuable assets at this point for a few more wins is not the smart thing to do.

What we need is a win tonight, Lets go Nets…

by Mike on Feb 16, 2010 9:59 AM EST reply actions

Jalen Rose said it right last night on ESPN. This team is stocked with good young talent. After starting the season 0-18, the battle these players are fighting [and losing] is one from the neck up.

Why are people still talking about Boone? Seriously?

by HLC on Feb 16, 2010 10:59 AM EST reply actions

@HLC; The reason people are still talking about Boone is simple. Anybody who actually starts stinks and anybody on the bench is a potential star. LMAO…

I.E. Boone, SWAT, CDR, Humphries, Dooling, T-Will.

by Mike on Feb 16, 2010 11:05 AM EST reply actions

NI,

Release players for D-League call ups? I don’t get it. The D-Leaguers aren’t going to play in the league long term. Why not just use the talent we have? Are we aiming to win zero games the rest of the season? It won’t improve our draft picks.

by Mike on Feb 16, 2010 11:26 AM EST reply actions

I have seen games where the Nets have had a nice lead without Lopez scoring and then all of a sudden he is tossing up shots to “get his”.

We all know about Harris…

Of course Lopez is a keeper. No way you trade him.

by Mike on Feb 16, 2010 11:29 AM EST reply actions

My comments about team oriented players vs selfish players were aimed more at players like Yi and Lee. I believe that their talents would shine on a better team while their weaknesses would be less exposed.

Players like Harris, CDR and Lopez are more selfish when it comes to their team play. And not just on offense.

by Mike on Feb 16, 2010 11:35 AM EST reply actions

Time to start playing Josh Boone and give back CDR his minutes – those are two of the only players outside of Brook that actually COMPETE on this team.

it is inexcusable that Boone can’t get minutes ahead of complete washed up bums like Hassell and Battie.

by Isaac on Feb 16, 2010 11:41 AM EST reply actions

Obviously CDR and Boone have to earn their minutes back, and not just on the basketball court, game night.

Team basketball also takes place off the court, in practice,
team meetings, travel, etc. Getting along with others believe it or not also counts. Why do you think you see so many talented players moving from team to team. Nobody can stand them for long.

The actual game only takes up a few hours. There are many more hours off the court, that also count.

exactly. i dont understand why people want to make so many deals, give up draft picks, take on other multi-year contracts for dime-a-dozen role players. so we can win 14 games instead of 8? that’s the kind of mentality that creates situations like the one the knicks have been in the last couple years. you’d think living across the river, nets fans would learn from the mistakes of their neighbors.

@sonny

I don’t know but when I see the Nets roster besides Lopez and harris and maybe some team will want Yi. There is nothing worth keeping.

Lee, CDR to me is a dime a dozen. The rest are just roster filler. So how can a team that has 4 wins sit and do nothing just amazes me. The Lee for VC is what turn the Nets into this mess. I solely blame this on Thorn and he should be fired.

We match up well with this team. We can get a win here. Am I crazy or did Gerald Wallace look terrible over All-Star weekend? He’s a heck of a player and all, he just didn’t seem to fit in with the upper echelon players.

Hey what would someone like Tyrus Thomas [off-court issues aside] look like at SF next to Yi? Could he play a similiar role as Gerald Wallace? Would his defensive tenacity and ability to attack the rim compliment a strech PF like Yi better than someone else who stretches the floor in Jarvis Hayes?

by Dirt on Feb 16, 2010 12:16 PM EST reply actions

Maybe Thorns meeting with Proky is scheduled for today and tomorrow because Thorn has some “ideas” up his sleeve for Thursday.

Never in my right mind did I think id be defending Lawrence in any way, shape or form but at least he has somce clue who to out on the floor given the players that he had to work with!!!

Josh Boone should be playing 15-20 minutes at the very least – at least he contributes with rebounds and hustle. You CANNOT say the same thing about ANY of the guys playing ahead of him right now.

by Isaac on Feb 16, 2010 1:45 PM EST reply actions

@Isaac;

I’m sorry if I gave the impression that Boone was a trouble maker. There must be a reason the Nets stopped playing him.

I believe the coaches did not think he was playing with the right amount of energy when given minutes.

On top of that he always looks so sad. LOL

Plus he is not in their future plans. Might as well give Yi and Humphries the minutes.

They also stopped playing CDR. Maybe for different reasons.

I can’t believe this is all Kiki’s doing. Many posters on this site think Kiki has it out for CDR, Boone, T-Will etc.

I don’t subscribe to this conspiracy theory.

And who knows. Maybe Yi is getting minutes so they can trade him and then give Boone the starting job at PF. LMAO

by Mike on Feb 16, 2010 2:05 PM EST reply actions

Agree with everyone about the stupidity in dealing assets for stop gap role players to win a few extra games. Only deals I would like to see is turning guys like hassel and battie into picks. Even mid second rounders at this point to Target guys like damion James.

Also I would actively look to get iguodala. Philly looking to shed money and he is signed for 3-4 more years. He would be nice addition to Harris and lopez. Plus his versatility would allow him to play with Lebron if we truly get lucky. Or you could simply Target David lee as free agent pf this summer. Better plan than wait and hope for big names this summer.

I still think that Thorn meeting with Proky right before the trade deadline might be significant.

Lets see what happens Thursday.

by Mike on Feb 16, 2010 2:15 PM EST reply actions

We are so bad that at this point I don’t think there is any player on this roster who you could say can lead this team to A win. If I’m the coach I would just play everybody and try to find lighting in a bottle. Even last year Harris was able to will this team to victory at least 5-7 times but not once this year for various reasons. I’m at the point where I’m questioning how good Lopez is although I still believe in him. I think now it’s mentally the team has checked out and physically they just don’t have the talent to compete. Man would I like to be a fly on the wall at that Proky Thorn meeting. Thorns going to start the meeting by telling Proky he got the Nets just where he wants them and after telling him the whole plan, Prokys just going to break out the drinks and call Russia to tell them he got the man to teach them. IN ROD WE TRUST. He’s my last resort. I truly believe that he is the only person in the world who could pull this off. BTW watch Kentucky tonight to hopefully see our savior.
