Prokhorov Playing It Close to the Vest

The last time Mikhail Prokhorov was seen publicly, he was meeting with Russia's president in Siberia. That was Thursday. The latest is that he's in Vancouver. As Peter Vecsey writes, no one really knows what he's up to. If and when he meets with Rod Thorn, Fred Kerber reports he'll be presented with a list of more than a dozen coaching candidates. Coach K is on it. So is Jeff Van Gundy. John Calipari isn't.

Maybe he’ll be presented with a list of trade offers for yi? Nah im just messing…

you’re not messing… you’re hoping… we need to dump him… experiment over…

“The Cleveland Cavaliers and Phoenix Suns are closing in on a deal that would send All-Star forward Amare Stoudemire to Cleveland, according to sources with knowledge of the negotiations.

The Cavaliers would send Zydrunas Ilgauskas and J.J. Hickson to Phoenix in exchange for Stoudemire, one of the league’s most dominant big man."

how are we letting this slip? seriously…

by Andy on Feb 14, 2010 8:37 AM EST reply actions

It’s shocking, I know, but we’re letting this slip because teams actually want something of value in return for their stars! Z and Hickson are way better than Simmons and Yi.

On an unrelated note, the dunk contest suuuuucks… I’m so disappointed. DeRozan had one good dunk, the rest were terrible.

by JB on Feb 14, 2010 9:01 AM EST reply actions

the dunk contest was lame!

by Andy on Feb 14, 2010 9:38 AM EST reply actions

Dumb to give up Hickson, I wanted him from the get go.
This is a get the championship THIS year move.
Dunk contest WAS lame but it gave us these beauties:
“I see better dunks at the Calabassas Rec Center.” and
“Lamar Kardashian” n’
“Reggie Kardashian”

by Jron on Feb 14, 2010 9:49 AM EST reply actions

Damn. This is a move that we needed.

by JerseyRich on Feb 14, 2010 9:55 AM EST reply actions

We should pursue hickson. Espn was discussing thsi and speculated that ina few years hickson could be better then stoudemire. He does have some talent and could be something as he develops. if amare goes to the cavs are lebron chances might be over.

by i on Feb 14, 2010 10:01 AM EST reply actions

And this relates to Prokhorov’s meeting with Thorn on Nets’ coaching options how?

by Net Income on Feb 14, 2010 10:07 AM EST reply actions

People, people!!! This thread was supposed to be about Proky and Thorn, not Hickson and STAT

by KJV on Feb 14, 2010 10:48 AM EST reply actions

Say NO to JVG. No, no, NO!!!!

I want Coach Cal back!!!

by Andres on Feb 14, 2010 11:36 AM EST reply actions

If the amare deal went down… Does that mean phx is giving up their playoffs hope?? Hickson is a nice player but he is not Amare… Hoping 4 Cleveland to lose in the playoffs btw :)

by Claud on Feb 14, 2010 11:55 AM EST reply actions

ughhhh i guess were not getting lebron. hopefully cavs lose in playoffs. maybe we can get wade

by matt on Feb 14, 2010 12:07 PM EST reply actions

First off, Amare and Shaq already happened, and didn’t work…

Second, with all these players dissing the Nets… we better do SOMETHING by the deadline, or we will get nobody this summer.

by Tim on Feb 14, 2010 12:08 PM EST reply actions

I don’t know how Kerber would know who and how many are on the list, but let’s try to name 12:

They say alot of college coaches and NBA assistants:

Analysts/Former coaches
JVG
M.Jackson
Avery Johnson

Assistants
P.Ewing
Tom Thibedeau

College
Coach K
Tom Izzo
Billy Donovan
Rick Pitino
Jay Wright

Who else could there be?

by Jack Handy on Feb 14, 2010 12:43 PM EST reply actions

I don’t suppose there is any way the Nets could play the rest of their games in China this year? Maybe someone there woud be excited to have a pizza delivered by Yi?

by Ispartan on Feb 14, 2010 12:47 PM EST reply actions

The Russian should ask for a list of candidates to replace the team’s president of basketball operations and GM as well.

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Feb 14, 2010 1:09 PM EST reply actions

Also not on topic but more important is that Syracuse and Wesley Johnson is on ESPN now 1-3 and Ohio State and Evan Turner is on CBS (at least in my area).

by jerry25 on Feb 14, 2010 1:10 PM EST reply actions

PLEASE THORN GET AMARE
we can offers simmons, c. lee, and hasell and mavs first which gets worst by the day

Phoenix is supposed to waive illgauskus so they are pretty much getting hickson. Worth taking a chance for amare since we are basically giving up lee and a lat first rounder

by Ricky on Feb 14, 2010 1:16 PM EST reply actions

@ Mr. Dollar Bills – EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by diehardNFFLbarnone on Feb 14, 2010 1:16 PM EST reply actions

Wes Johnson is turning 23 yrs. by draft time…thats old!

by Andy on Feb 14, 2010 1:23 PM EST reply actions

Ricky,

The Mavs just traded for a legit rebounding/defensive front court player and a scoring wing. I don’t think that pick may be worth much at the end of the day

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Feb 14, 2010 1:29 PM EST reply actions

Mr. Dollar Bill,
Yea i know thats my point. But look at what cleavland is giving!! we could match it easily. Lets be quite honest free agency is going to be tough. Amare provides us with a safety blanket

by Ricky on Feb 14, 2010 1:30 PM EST reply actions

Yeah…I think that the Nets not making a move during the season will bite us on the rear end this summer, but seeing that The Russian still isn’t in charge 100% screws us over big time.

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Feb 14, 2010 1:38 PM EST reply actions

@Andy
Evan Turner is better than Wall right now. Its about time that some media people acknowledge this, although I don’t care as long as Thorn knows it. Too bad I can’t watch both games.

The Amare news is not good. Best news would be noone gets him until summer so there is more competition. I assume that Shaq would retire and Amare would be re-signed.

The Dallas trade is not good either for Nets draft pick.

by jerry25 on Feb 14, 2010 1:46 PM EST reply actions

i begining to think that aldrich and lopez could play together…that is if we get the #4 pick…ah~!

by Andy on Feb 14, 2010 2:05 PM EST reply actions

every good news or rumours that involve the nets ends up being false and a spit in the face for us net fans

i just dont know what to say anymore about this franchise, its getting me really pissed off caring so much for a organization being run by a moron that is bringing everyone down with him because he knows hes the first to go down

its a real shame for our players and more importantly the FANS

by BrS 1 on Feb 14, 2010 2:11 PM EST reply actions

I agree. The franchise has been such a disaster this season that everyone from announcers, college coaches, all-star free-agents, message board posters to people who comment from nets-related Yahoo/ESPN articles are taking jab at the nets.

I think the only thing we can hope for is that historic losses will equal to a historic turn-around next season. Worst record of all time to NBA dynasty!!!

historic losses = historic turn-around

by twill fan on Feb 14, 2010 2:28 PM EST reply actions

They should have had the winner of the amateur dunk contest compete against the NBA dunkers. The winner, “The Air Up There” would have crushed the NBA Dunkers. He kinda reminded me of the old Vince. Just ask Lebron

by Barry from Brooklyn on Feb 14, 2010 2:48 PM EST reply actions

@Andy
Aldrich is a sure thing in NBA. But he is a Center, just like Bogut. I was thinking the same thing, but would Brook accept a role as PF?

That would allow Nets to change emphasis in free agency.

Evan Turner finished with 16-11-8 (2 assists short of triple-double in rout of Illinois.
Seems that announcers are afraid to say he is best player in country right now, because of all the hype for Wall.

by jerry25 on Feb 14, 2010 2:55 PM EST reply actions

Yi should be given a chance.

by Tom F on Feb 14, 2010 3:30 PM EST reply actions

Wall is only 18…and for a freshmen is performing great. That’s why all the hype…Turner is 21, more NBA ready….to me best player in the country. But i dont think you could go wrong with either one.

by Andy on Feb 14, 2010 3:47 PM EST reply actions

Actually, Wall turned 19 last Sept. 6. However, he doesn’t seem to be any better now than he was early in the year.

Devin Harris (the healthy motivated one) would be a better PG than Wall, for quite a while, even though Wall has some quicker moves, a higher vertical jump and may have a better team attitude.

Meanwhile Turner is already running his team might already be better than anyone currently on the Nets. There is no risk in choosing Turner. Nets could keep Harris.

by jerry25 on Feb 14, 2010 4:54 PM EST reply actions

yeah ur right…all this time i thought he was 18…most of these ball players are a year older then there class…anyway favors is 18 but has been VERY inconsistent.

by Andy on Feb 14, 2010 5:04 PM EST reply actions

I don’t like JVG as our coach, his memories of 1999 are what Thorn is trying to sell, but his teams in Houston with a much better players than current Rockets team fared badly than the starless team of the Rockets this season so I don’t believe he is good for us. His type of basket ball by slowing it down is not what we need.

Don’t know about Messina but right now I like his unknown better than any of the others, the only other guy is Mark Jackson.

All other coaches including Coach K are being courted more for their recruiting ability and star status than what they can do with the team. So whatever they do unless we can land the big name players I don’t think these coaches can lead us well.

by Sunil on Feb 14, 2010 6:03 PM EST reply actions

It would be pretty sick to land a trade that we could get both wall and turner!!

by Desi des on Feb 14, 2010 8:37 PM EST reply actions

sounds good. Turners palying better then wall, but wall has other features we need

by i on Feb 14, 2010 9:00 PM EST reply actions

I like us to go with Avery Johnson.

by Tony on Feb 14, 2010 10:48 PM EST reply actions

@ Desi des.

I was thinking the same thing: Try to get Wall & Turner. If we win the draft, I would take Wall and then try to trade Harris, Lee and a #1 pick for the 2nd pick overall and pick up Turner.

Wall and Turner on the same Nets team would be Sick!!!

Let’s go Nets!
