The Buzz Sure Beats The Bust

As Al Iannazzone writes, this is the Nets' best week. They can't lose and they're one of the biggest stories in sports. As Mikhail Prokhorov's wallet starts to open, possibilities begin to emerge, like Mike Krzyzewski as coach. No one other than the Russian billionaire himself knows where this is going, but it's going to be one heckuva ride. The next big thing, Iannazzone suggests, will be the Draft Lottery.

There must be trades next week…i want to see if we deal Yi for a star…

maybe we should rehire frank? id rather have COach K but franks second on my list. CDR is not being bought out is good news, even though under a normal coach he would actually be involved.

One thing I can say that I haven’t said in a long, long time is: I’m excited to be a Nets fan! :D

@Andy
The only star Yi would fetch in a trade is Starbury

The boss probably will trade this young core of players Williams(realeased), Yi, CDR, Lee, and T-Williams AND the vets Battie, Boone, Simmons, Hassell and Quinn. Hopefully 10 players will be gone by the break from day one. Keep the true players Harris, Dooling, Hayes, Humpries and Lopez.

Marbury is currently playing for the Shangxi team, the ChBA’s equivalent of the Nets.

I can only assume Al meant “weekend” since the Nets already lost this week and will surely lose next week as well.
by Ispartan on Feb 13, 2010 3:26 PM EST reply actions
Plus the only Nets representative in the all star weekend lost as well.

Espn says that the suns would definitely want a 1st rounder and JJ hickson for amare…we could offer yi and mavs 1st rounder. Amare is 27…but his defense has been questioned…

Do you guys think if the nets make a move it will be something that was in the works (like the J-Kidd trade that took days and everyone knew it was going to happen) or the trades that sent V.C. and R.J. packing that even they had no clue about and sportwriters/reporters never wrote or spoke about?
by jj on Feb 13, 2010 3:58 PM EST reply actions
The Nets have an agenda. Only a few are getting fooled. Most fans see it. Thats why Yi gets bashed all the time.

Yi is the poster child for what this franchise is about right now, while we wait for our savior.

You can call it hopeless or whatever you want, but when we, the desperate few who are left close our eyes and think about all that is wrong with this team, A 7 foot project comes to mind.
We should call him Coney Island. Projects scrape the sky there and those projects are all the desperate few who are left can cling to.

man Net Income,
you really love Yi. I believe you are his number 1 defender.
If you love Power Fowards whose hands are lathered up with butter and who can put up some nice numbers but fail to do all the small things that change the game…Yi Jianlian is your man.
Whatever floats your boat tho…i sure can’t complain about the points he puts up. If he didnt score in some games we’d have some games where we only scored 50 points. But i could do without all the games he went 1 for 10 or 2 for 14.

The Nets right now are one of the biggest stories in all of sports? Lets be real. The only people who really care are the one’s frequenting this site, and there’s not that many of us.

College coaches fail in the NBA more often than not.
Mike Montgomery
Rick Pitino
Mike Dunleavy
are just some more recent examples
Coach K only succeeded because… he had a superstar team for crying out loud!
Plus Popovich and DAntoni were around to help.

NI, why do you like Yi so much. He can only shoot…i want a Pf would can push people around, rebound, defend, and score in the post.
by Andy on Feb 13, 2010 4:56 PM EST reply actions
Maxiell is the answer for this team a trade for Yi and Lee would work.
by jj on Feb 13, 2010 5:15 PM EST reply actions
Count me in the dwindling Yi is a keeper crowd.
Our team is bad because we lack enough talent – especially depth. Our team is historically horribly bad because of the complete lack of coaching direction. I do not think Frank was a bad coach, but he clearly had no consistent approach to what he was trying to do with this team – dribble drive, play the young guys for the future, play the vets to win, pick and roll, BLopez as the focal point at the key, defense wins, get out and run, set up through the big guys, and the list goes on.
I had hopes that the core of veterans (Harris, Hayes, Dooling and Hassel in particular) would provide some stability. But injuries meant that before we could establish any confidence as a team we were in such a hole that we seem unable to crawl back out. The vets are as lost and frustrated as anyone.
Now imagine you are a young player trying to find his game and confidence in this mess. Add in locker room immaturity. A new know nothing don’t really want the job coach. A coach you love appears as a saviour who then packs it in a few days later. No idea who will be GM and whether they want you or not. An injury. A country of 1.3 billion that only has you to cheer for – obsess over.
Now compare how Yi has performed to his peers – CDR has lost it completely. TWILL was one nap from the D-League. CLEE is uber inconsistent and appeared for a while like he was about to completely melt down. Even BLopez has struggled to remain consistent and positive. What do you really expect from Yi?
Yi is not going to be a superstar, but he has the skills to be a solid starter on a championship quality team – as a SF/PF combo. I dont understand why people get all excited about a journeyman rotation player like Hump (who is a welcom strengthening of the bench) rather than cheer for the development of a potential key piece. Yi is more than a marketing chip. Everyone sucks this year. You have to see the bright spots for the future by looking hard under the $%&# coating of this season. Yi is one of those spots.

“Yi is not going to be a superstar, but he has the skills to be a solid starter on a championship quality team – as a SF/PF combo.”
nope…not a solid starter on a championship quality team. Too soft. Fingers too buttery. Clutch once in a blue moon.
However it is true that this team is filled with tons of players are inconsistent. We can put it all together for a whole game and fit all the pieces of the puzzle together because so many of the pieces simply don’t fit, we’re missing important pieces, and we lack a coach who has an idea of how these pieces could actually work together into a solid identity.
Trying to make a star out of Yi by giving him innumerous touches despite all his faltering is sure not how the pieces fit together…

Who was the genius that came up with the rumor about CDR being bought out?
Jeez, He’s making less than a million a year..

YI is one of those tweeners. too flimsy for the 4, not enough skill or speed to guard or play the 3. He cant do anything.. literally. he can stroke it from 20 feet out but is only like 40 percent from there and is a liability on both ends. when he was aggresive, he was good, but now, as always yi is garbage. i wonder who will be stupid enough to want to aquire yi for any form of NBA talent. SIGH.

I have my own feelings as to why some of you are so obsessed with Yi, but I will keep them to myself. But this thread is simply insane.

I think Yi could be a solid rotation/depth guy because of his tweener skill set. The problem is this regime wants to make him a core piece, he shouldn’t be someone that plays 30+ minutes and night or someone you build a team/offense around.

Tiresome obsession. The summary is about how the week has been different than all the other weeks of the year and yet, it devolves quickly, almost immediately, into Yi bashing.

Potential trades for Amare
NETS: Yi Jianlian, Stromile Swift, Ryan Anderson, Jarvis Hayes and a No. 1 pick
• See this trade in the ESPN Trade Machine
Why they’d do it: The Nets could be immediate contenders again with a team of Devin Harris, Vince Carter, Brook Lopez and Amare. And if they end up finding a new home for Vince Carter at the trade deadline or this summer (word is the Spurs are interested), the Nets might have the opportunity in 2010 to offer LeBron James a chance to play with Harris, Amare and Lopez.
The Suns would get a young big with a bright future in Yi plus another first-round pick — either the Nets’ pick this year, or the one Dallas owes the Nets in 2010. They would also clear about $12 million off their cap next year when Swift, Ager and Hayes all come off the books.
Why they wouldn’t: It’s hard to imagine that New Jersey wouldn’t do it. Amare can come off the books in 2010, meaning that New Jersey could still pursue LeBron and other free agents then, even if they make the trade. In the meantime, they would be relevant again.
For the Suns, the question would be, is this enough to get for Amare? Yi is a talent and the pick would be nice. But is there a better trade to be made?

I remember reading that last year before the deadline…

Net Income is not obsessed with Yi. He is just one of the many who stands out and speaks what’s right. Those few who drag Yi into every discussion are the truly sick ones who are obsessed.

Any of us still watching are obviously obsessed for one reason or another. Personally, I feel we need an upgrade at damn near every position. Making just around 3 million dollars, Yi is an asset at a perfect price point. As such an asset, we could get something back in return.
Again, in my own humble opinion, at the power forward position I happen to like bangers like Ben Wallace, Kevin Love, DeJuan Blair or uber-skilled bigs who could play Center as well, like Pau Gasol or Tim Duncan. I wouldn’t even like Dirk Nowitzki. Will Dirk ever win a championship? I really don’t think so.
There is a proven formula that Yi does not fit in to. On the bench, sure he would be fine. As one of our keystones, he ain’t gonna work. I would say the same could even go for Dirk.
My thoughts have nothing to do with what race he is or what other people in the internet basketball hierarchy think.
