Kerber: Prokhorov Likely to Keep Thorn

Headlines aside, Fred Kerber reports Rod Thorn is likely to stay as Nets president. Quoting NBA sources, Kerber writes Mikhail Prokhorov "knows what he has in Rod" and "it looks very good for him". Meanwhile, Thorn himself tells Kerber he's not firing Kiki Vandeweghe this season. One thing is certain: everyone wants to make a run at Mike Krzyzewski. John Calipari is also the mix. Neither has said no.

Does keeping Thorn mean no Colangelo or is he still a possibility?
by J-Kay on Feb 13, 2010 7:35 AM EST reply actions
Replace thorn with Colangelo. Look what we have missed on not drafting Dejuan Blair Last night. He scored 22 points and pulled in 23 rebounds. That should have been our palyer or should I say “should have been a Nets Player”. We need a guy here that is not afraid to draft a real talent and not scared to gamble on a player that had a knee surgery.

@J-Kay
Can’t imagine them together. I can imagine Kiki pursuing more time with his family after this season ends and them hiring a young smart guy like Presti of the Thunder or Morey of the Rockets…an apprentice.
I expect there will be young Russian in the front office as well. CSKA Moscow was a very good European team and had a lot of front office talent. I would think Prokhorov would want eyes and ears he trusts in the front office. But I am merely speculating.

Please no to coach Cal.
I predict the volume of leaks and stories about the Nets over the next couple of weeks is going to be astounding. Hope you can get some sleep in there NI!

I’d fire thorn just for saying he would not fire kiki.
by geo on Feb 13, 2010 8:28 AM EST reply actions
Is it at least possible that Colangelo would work with Thorn? If Colangelo truely does wanna be here he should be willing and if Thorn wants to stay here and rebuild us he should be willing. I know ego will probably get in the way one way or another.
Any chance though?

theres no coach K without colangelo, and without those 2, no big name superstars.
by JJ on Feb 13, 2010 9:14 AM EST reply actions
Yes, we’re keeping Thorn! That means we can sign big name free agents with Proky’s money, then trade them for crap the following summer! AND (outside of Brook), continue to draft the finest and most promising of rookies! Seriously, he drafted Jordan 2 decades ago. More recently, he hasn’t done much besides put together this awesome team and allow Kikigate to turn the locker room into a mine field. The follies of ‘09-’10 should be enough to hire someone else. But hey, it’s not senility til he wets himself. For now… Wisdom.

I’d rather Thorn gets canned and we bring in Jerry C.
I woudln’t mind Coach Cal back.
by Andres on Feb 13, 2010 9:15 AM EST reply actions
Reading between the lines on the Kerber article: some other owners are pushing Prokhorov to keep their buddy Thorn. Proky has graciously acknowledged their praise of him, which they’ve interpreted to mean he’ll keep him. All that means is that Proky isn’t stupid enough to announce firing Thorn while Thorn’s buddies hold the keys to the kingdom.

Wasn’t Coach Cal a total disaster for the Nets when he coached them years back??? Pitino was a disaster for the Celtics also. College coaches never work out.
by Joanne on Feb 13, 2010 9:23 AM EST reply actions
Morey or Presti would be a Godsend.
Morey always finds guys who do well, and he thinks outside the box, he doesn’t limit himself to the nba norms.
Presti’s got a good background as well with his time in San Antonio and is excellent right now with OKC

Horrible news if this is true
as if Thorn would admit to firing Kiki before he does it though….lol

Thorn say he won’t fire KupKake, because he doesn’t have to. The Russian wrecking ball will take care of that little problem.

I wouldn’t say Coach Cal was a disaster. He did coach us to a playoffs after a long absense. He was turning our diva filled team around, but injuries and a trade (Cassell for Marbury) put the nail in his coffin.
I think he also wanted to call Kobe’s bluff & draft him even though he refused to play for us. Management panicked and drafted Kittles instead.
by TheNetsFan on Feb 13, 2010 10:20 AM EST reply actions
GREAT THING ABOUT BRINGING JOHN CALIPARI BACK IS HE WOULD PLAY CDR. This guy is one of the few players on the team that wants to win every game. Kiki won’t play him because he is too competitive. This shows you the strategy of the current team management

NETS FANS……. THIS IS WAT WE’VE BEEN WAITING FOR !!!!
all the stupid stuff we had to go thru this season… i thnk Porky feels our pain….couple of points
- — dont think Thorn and Colangelo could coexist
- — Porky is gonna make a big splash.. imagine that press conference when he officially takes over
- I dont mind Ewing being our top assistant coach… he can develop Brook Lopez….
- — Regardless of our front office situation… we will have something done this offseason…..
- — Singler is so confident that Coach K aint leaving.. he probably wont but I dont thnk it’ll be as simple as before

Didn’t we already try the Coach Cal thing?
As much as I LOVE Thorn… I would find it near impossible to say no to Colangelo…
by Tom on Feb 13, 2010 10:52 AM EST reply actions
And Ewing is so good since he taught Dwight Howard all those post moves. Oh wait he didn’t. Well at least he knows how to win. Oh wait he coached the losing sophomores and how many rings does he have?
And to note, I actually liked Kerry Kittles. Sure he didn’t have to longest career, but he was a good player. Good defender and great shooter. Kinda like the type of player we could use right about now. We haven’t had a really really good three point shooter role player since Eddie House

Agree with Geo, Thorn should be fired just for saying he’s not going to fire KIKI.
by KJV on Feb 13, 2010 11:07 AM EST reply actions
By the way, Patrick Ewing cannot be an NBA head coach. He should stick to the “big man development” role. Look how horrible he was last night at the rookie challenge! He could not recognize that he had a huge size advantage and that he should take advantage of it. Instead, he played like the rookies, who had no player over 6’8"
by KJV on Feb 13, 2010 11:10 AM EST reply actions
Man, looking at old highlights takes you back. How awesome would a circa 2000 Kenyon Martin look beside Brook Lopez? That’s the type of guy we need beside him; athletic, shot blocker, finisher, someone who can clean up missed shots, etc.
I think keeping Thorn is the right thing. And there doesn’t seem to be much point in replacing Kiki now, the season is lost. Might as well make Kiki the coach with the worst winning percentage ever and let the summer cleanse everything

After watching DeJuan Blair moose up the sophomores last night I thought of my Yi trade idea of the day. Yi and Dooling for Glen Davis, Scalabrine and Bill Walker. Start Glen Davis at PF and let him gobble up some boards.

yi and cdr for tyrus thomas!!! what…that too much.
i think chicago will only get expiring contracts for thomas…so i would offer hassell and a 2nd rounder.
by Andy on Feb 13, 2010 11:23 AM EST reply actions
how are cavs in the mix for amare or jamison? what do they have to offer that the nets dont? not that i really want amare that badly.
by Andy on Feb 13, 2010 11:24 AM EST reply actions
Glen Davis isn’t thaaat good. And both Davis and Tyrus Thomas would rather shoot jump shots all day than bang down low. Not to mention that Tyrus Thomas can’t even shoot but he insists on shooting jumpers because he practices them.
Please please read this before recommending Tyrus http://bullsbythehorns.com/?p=1608
by muwu on Feb 13, 2010 11:27 AM EST reply actions
True. If Thomas is having issues in Chicago, he’s definitely going to have his problems here. It seems he could be Sean Williams but a little bit better of a player.
I just desperately want to see this team get some power, attitude and swagger at the forward positions.

I don’t think there will be any trades until after the meeting in Vancouver, if there is a meeting in Vancouver.
I see another long month ahead of losses on the court and back-and-forth in the courts.
It sucks being a Nets fan.

has anybody ever seen TNT, ESPN, or NBA TV mock the nets? especially sportscenter. its annoying and it gets on my nerves. If we get Coach K/ Wall, arent both lebron and wade going to come to the nets? Why not? They will have a coach they love, a player lebrons friends with and has so much hype out of college, and not to mwention a russian billionaire owner, and the nets young talent.
i could see this happening:
Wall
Lee
Lebron
Lee
Lopez
or
Wall
Wade
Lebron
Lee
Lopez
or
Wall
Wade
Lebron
Yi
Lopez

All this talk about change on the horizon is giving me ants in my pants. Perhaps a shower would help. Seriously though, I can’t wait any longer. My 7 3/4 inch head is going to burst and it’s not going to be pretty.
I want change we can believe in.
by Dirt on Feb 13, 2010 11:49 AM EST reply actions
Well at least if we get Wall or Turner during the summer we can have a dash of optimism. Heck, even if we get Demarcus Cousins I could feel optimistic about next season at this point. There’s probably no way he meshes with Brook and his attitude could be a big risk especially since we have no influential veterans, but if played separately he and brook could be quite the troublesome twosome at the center spot.

@NI and muwu,
I would prefer Morey if Proky’s NETS are aiming at a young front office, especially his ability to dig out under-estimated players who later turn out to be solid contributers. It is said he is also responsible for drafting/trading Perkins and Davis while in Boston, true?
by GONETS on Feb 13, 2010 1:34 PM EST reply actions
Certainly Thorn should be relegated to what he does best and that’s make trades. There should be someone entirely different to evaluate draft choices as Thorn as proved over and over that is not his forte.
by johnny on Feb 13, 2010 1:38 PM EST reply actions
Good news on Thorn, if it’s true. Don’t think Coach K would help us. He’s 63 yo and a god in the college game. Nets should go after JVG, IMO.

Please take any action to help us in the summer. Please.
Proky, it’s your time to do this.

face the facts!
only things that we should worry about is a new coaching staff that will develop our players and drafting john wall
forget lebron, wade, bosh( all those top free agent players)

Hype Machine Schedule
1) Proko takes ownership of team – (guessing early April)
2) Groundbreaking begins
3) Season ends April 14th
4) Draft Lottery May 18th
5) June 24th Draft
6) Free agent frenzy begins
Between April 15th and July 15th the entire face of the franchise will be determined. As exciting as things are now, I can’t imagine what those three months will be like.

Who could be the source of the Leaks in the Nets Organization?
Thorn says he doesn’t have a list of coaches – just in his head.
However, in preparation for the mtg. with Proky, he probably had his staff do some research and had his secretary top up some reports. If I was Thorn, I would be outraged that one of them was a “mole”, unless that’s what he wants.
Where did the story about firing Kiki come from if it was false?
by jerry25 on Feb 14, 2010 7:12 PM EST reply actions
Everyone is looking for someone to come along who would attract free agents.
Free agents aren’t stupid. You need to make the team better before the deadline, then get a new coach ASAP who can motivate an improved team to win. JVG and Avery Johnson are ready to go next week. Avery is probably cheaper and would go to New Orleans if not taken by summer. He would get Harris motivated, one way or the other.
If Nets went into summer looking like a decent team, then free agents would have something to go by.
However, it appears than Thorn’s primary goal right now is first to keep his job, so every delay with Proky is reducing the chance of anything happening. The fact that Kiki would remain coach (not GM) for the remainder of the season tells me nothing will happen. It is very unfortunate
