Is Prokhorov Planning Big Changes...Really Big?

Mikhail Prokhorov is thinking big, really big. The Record, Post, Yahoo! and Sports Illustrated report the Russian billionaire may try to hire the head of USA Basketball, Jerry Colangelo, to replace Rod Thorn, then use Colangelo to land Duke's Mike Krzyzewski as coach/GM. "I don’t think anyone really realizes what it’s going to mean to have him in this league," one high-ranking NBA official tells Yahoo!

yesss that would be great. if we can make him coach in june around nba draft he would attract Lebron, Wade bosh and maybe even kidd lol. but in all honesty he loves duke and i don’t see him leaving unless Lebron is coming

Forget Coach K. He isn’t coming and he wouldn’t be good in the pros. He’s great for the college game cuz he can recruit but I think he would be similiar to Pitino in the pro game.

Anytime you hear “quoting sources close to Nets Organization’s thinking,” you know it’s all a bunch of BS. The guy just wants to have some readers.

I just got this wild idea while watching Bobby Knight break down some college ball on ESPN today. How about hiring Bobby Knight as our new Nets head coach?
We are going to have a relatively young team who need discipline. I would love to see Bobby Knight on the Nets sidelines. At least, we’d have the best interesting postgame interviews.
Let’s go Nets!!!

It is possible that Coach K could leave Duke, because of the fact that Duke’s academic demands puts a limit on how good the program can be. Though they are still good, they aren’t a championship caliber program anymore. He is probably willing to take on a new challenge.
This is a great situation any coach or GM would love to come into.
I’m excited to be a fan for the future of this team.

Bobby Knight once said he would never coach in the pros because he doesn’t believe players should be paid more than coaches.
Unlike a lot of college coaches, I’m sure he would make a good coach in the pros but I doubt he would be up for it.

yes yes yes. whos better then the man who coaches lebron, kobe, wade, bosh every year??? he just doesnt seem to “fit” though. id rather have callapari or although he doesnt have coaching expierence, marc jackson who has great nba knowledge and would be a great guy for the nets. It would be nice to see the nets get kryzezewski and then get marc jackson as an assistant along with loyer and overton.

@ JayMS
Good point about Bobby Knight’s prior statement regarding coaching in the pros. I completely agree with Bobby Knights’ assessment that players should not be paid more than coaches. It’s not going to happen in Sports but in my opinion employees should not make more money than their bosses.
If Bobby Knight took the job, his first course of action should be to ban CDR from using his tweeter. I like Bobby Knight a lot, he reminds me of Bill Parcells.
Let’s start a “Hire Bobby Knight” campaign Nets fans!!!

This story is pure conjecture.
A NBA Official who knows how the Nets think? Give me a break!
The thoughts of Rod Thorn and Proky are all that count.
On the other hand, Duke is not likely to return to top level status, because they don’t like recruiting the best players – who are likely to leave after 1 year. Coach K could be tired of that scenario, but I don’t think he is tough enough to deal with the problems of an NBA Coach.

wow, i had a sneaking feeling about coach k given his global name now. All the playes on the usa team seem to like him and dude is damn sure smart with the x’s and o’s. If he accepts the job i hope he gets to big time NBA assistants with him though. He is going to be in for a different game.
I think we are going to get some good news after this break.

In more important news, AI dropped out of the All Star game for personal reasons (congratulations!).
David Lee will replace him, which could have an indirect affect on free agency.
Now Lee should command at least 1 million more per year.
However, someone like Proky may be more willing to pay top dollar for a reigning All Star, especially since he is just what the Nets need:
Big PF who can rebound, score, get along with BLopez, he is a team leader, he isn’t clutzy, and by comparison to the present PF, is a pretty good physical defensive player, and can sub. for Lopez at Center.
In short, just adding DLee could be worth 25 more wins. DLee+Turner could be 40 more wins.
The question is would Lee be willing to abandon the Knicks? Will the Knicks make re-signing Lee their top priority?

Coach K is a good candidate. All the big time players in the NBA would seem to give him their stamp of approval. We need a coach who stars want to play for or at least feel comfortable playing for. All the Olympics guys have gotten along with him the past however many summers, correct?
Moreover, why is news of the coaching search beginning now? Nets’ brass sending signals to Kiki that he’s on the outs. Is this the calm wave on the horizon before the “big splash”? The timing is intriguing.
One thing’s for sure — all signs are signifying that Proko’s about to jump into the water for his big splash.

didn’t the Lakers try to get Coach K a few years back when Phil was gone for a while? then a bunch of students started sending him all kinds of love mail, and he got all emotional and decided not to leave. If he wouldn’t leave for the Lakers with a young Kobe, why would he leave for the Nets.

wasn’t Coach K interviewed for the Lakers job a few years back, and didn’t he turn that job down (coaching Kobe)? Coach K don’t have the cajones to risk his precious reputation jumping into NBA with the current Nets – no matter who’s the owner and what the salary cap.

by pawley on Feb 11, 2010 8:46 PM EST reply actions
If Coach K agreed to commit 3+ summers of his life to the Olympics with NBA players, why would you be “shocked” if he suddenly had an urge to continue that quasi-NBA success in a bona fide way? You guys are killjoys, lol.
by Big Tom on Feb 11, 2010 8:54 PM EST reply actions
Coach K(gb) is just what this team needs. He has clout. He has a winning history. He has coached the best to Olympic gold. You can’t underestimate the lure of a good player/coach relationship. If any potential coaching hire can lure a Lebron, Wade, Bosh, etc… it would be Coach K.
The only way he will ever jump to the NBA is if it’s his last job no matter what. If he makes the jump, I see him retiring before returning to college basketball. I think a return to college basketball, with what likely would be a different school, would be the last thing he would want. Of course, he’s now at the age that if he has a failed 3 or so year stint in the NBA, he could just call it quits & retire.

Proky told Lebron he can pick the coach if he comes to the Nets. He can also pick what players he has on the team. He will have defacto control of the whole operation. Lebron will also get part ownership of Proky’s Russian mine. Proky and Lebron will rule the world.

by i on Feb 11, 2010 10:02 PM EST reply actions
Here is a rumor I can get behind….retread free.
Hate Duke, but love coach K and what he did with the Olympic team. He would attract top free agents (if for no other reason then to suck up to the Olympic selectors!). He would show the new owner is committed by recruiting a name coach. I even like Colangelo as a tag team (probably a must to get coach K). Plus this give room to bring in Messina in a year or two as the replacement assuming Coach K goes hard for a few years before sailing off into the sunset and the same for Brian Colangelo when daddy retires.
For those who do not think Coach K would consider to leave – Duke is struggling to remain a consistent final four threat with the increasing one-and-done rent a stars and freshmen who want to play big minutes right away and TV time for other conferences that make the ACC/Duke stage more ordinary then it used to be, as noted by another poster at 63 it is now or never, a perfect situation with all the assets we have and limited expectations for greatness the day he arrives, a big dollar owner so no worries about keeping the team competitive after he arrives.
I hope this was a planted story in front of more news coming out of the All-Star Rod-Russian meeting. A sad Rod on Monday could be telling.

@Accelerate
Read the story and it is speculation, just as Al was speculating one scenario. At least Woj should have given Al some credit for speculating first.
The Jerry Colangelo speculation was mentioned elsewhere. That is the key, but I don’t see how Proky is supposed to make a decision by this weekend, when he gives Thorn is OK to proceed. Proky could always replace Thorn with Jerry at a later time. Coach K might not even be a good NBA coach.
The media is all wrong about dreaming about this summer.
LeBron wouldn’t come even if Wall was drafted and K was the coach. The Nets would have to have either Bosh or DLee (possibly Boozer) ready to commit before LeBron would come along. And this would have to happen by the end of June before LeBron would declare for free agency – not likely.
Besides, Evan Turner is more of a sure thing than Wall, as everyone will soon realize. Nets have less than a 50% chance of getting EITHER Wall or Turner, so you can’t make HUGE decisions based on something with less than 50% chance to happen in 4 months.
by jerry25 on Feb 12, 2010 6:08 AM EST reply actions
The Sports Writers are getting desperate at this time, ahead of the trade deadline.
With NO big trades happening yet, they are turning to making up the news. Give me a break about citing a NBA official familiar with how the Nets think as being the original source – Its only how Thorn thinks that counts and he isn’t talking.
There are so many contingencies involved. Even if Coach K was interested, in the end, he would probably change his mind again. I don’t even think K would be a good NBA coach, with all the personnel problems he would have.
by jerry25 on Feb 12, 2010 6:55 AM EST reply actions
Proky should just give Thorn his approval to stay on about a year (he could always replace Thorn with Jerry Colangelo later). Proky should give Thorn the means to make some meaningful pre-deadline trade – especially to get something decent for Yi and get rid of some expirings.
Then fire Kiki for what he has done lately. Bring in Avery Johnson later in March (after speaking with Mark Cuban).
Finally prepare to steal All Star David Lee from the Knicks, after trying to draft Evan Turner this summer. Save some salary cap for getting another good FA next summer, after the Nets are already competitive in the East – which alone would be the best draw for getting LeBron in 2011.
That’s a safe scenario that could turn the Nets around fast
High School players may sign because of the Coach’s name, but that just isn’t true of NBA stars. LeBron knows what a good team is, and he recently named the Nets pieces he likes – he left out Yi.

…or Al found out that Woj was going to do the story and beat him to it. Story was in the wind all yesterday afternoon.
There is a difference between informed speculation and wild speculation. Both quote NBA sources, which at this point is wise, since there are no Nets sources on this one….because most in the Nets organization don’t know whether they’ll have a job next year.

As mentioned before I have always said bringing in Christian Laettner as a coach is a solid idea. Well, now if we can get Coach K and then Christian as assistant under Coach K. The Nets will be set at coaching for the next twenty years. Can we say Championships. As for GM it has to be someone whom can work close with these two guys along with a being able to communicate well with the two solid owners of the Nets. I do have someone in mind but that is for another day. Coach K and Christian would be great assets to the Nets as a combination of coaches and communicators with today’s players. Both see the big picture regarding winning along with both being low profile people whom stay out of the lime light.
This is going to be special for Brooklyn.
Maybe we can get St. Johns to play all their home games at the Barclay Center to help build that program back also.
The biggest arguement will be were to have the future NBA parade in Brooklyn or down Broadway.
Well the answer is simple, start at Prospect Park down Flatbush Ave. passed the Barclay Center to end at Brooklyn Borough Hall. Wow! Having it on a weekend will bring more people then Manhattan had for the Yankees.
Theme could beto honor the Brooklyn Dodgers along with the Nets.

I’m not sold on the Coach K angle so I’ll assume it doesn’t have any teeth right now. But Thorn being replaced should be #1 on the Russian’s list of things to do. I’d just hope that Colangelo doesn’t want to make this team into a Euro style club like he attempted with Toronto.
The mission is to build a championship caliber team, period. While Toronto has been pretty decent they lacked toughness required to get to the top.

First of all, can we all just take a breath and realize that even with the worst record, the odds of us getting the number one pick are 25% at best? So, it’s 3-1 that we WON’T be in a position to draft Wall. It might well be that if we end up with the second, third or fourth pick we can package it to the team with the one pick to move up to one, if the team with the one pick is set at PG. But I have no idea how this could work under the cap, except that we might package it with one of our other number one picks.

Thorn will remain in the Nets organization probably as president. It may be a symbolic position but Proky will not release a NBA elder, who is well respected and also a good friend of Sterns. We then will get a new GM who will really run the show. I would think the new GM will play a big part in naming the new coach.

Listen Everyone. Coah K is never leaving Duke, even if Lebron James goes to the Nets. I think we all know how smart Coach K is. In a few short years he will become the winningest mens college basketball coach in the history of the world and there is no active coach that is even a close second. That is an enourmous achievement and guarantees him a place in history as the greatest mens college basketball coach ever. He will probably win a few more NCAA titles as well (look at next years signed recruits). He doesn’t need the money. Pay close attention to when Coach K said he would never leave Duke. It was after team USA won the Gold Medal. It was wonderful for him to coach that kind of talent, but he also got to see the bad side of it. The side where you the coach has no control over all star multi-million dollar athletes like Lebron, Kobe and Wade. He’s not just the coach of Duke Basketball, he practically owns the damn town. Why would a guy as smart as Coach K leave his present situation for one that could never equal it.

Oh yeah, and did I mention the 63 years of age is not a good time to begin your NBA coaching career. I’m a BIIIIIGGGGG Duke fan boys. Coach K’s Birthday is this Saturday, Fed 13th, and he will be 63 years old. At the beginning of next week all this will be remembered as is a great publicity stunt by the new owner of the Nets.

Mike K for 3 to 5 years at 10M to 15M per year. Let’s see him turn down that offer. Plus he can mentor the next coach during his tenure.
I’d be fine replacing Thorn with Jerry C. And let the FA barrage begin. We need Wall to allow us to trade Harris for either cap space or a star to put next to LBJ.

NBA owners will “kill” Proky if he starts throwing that kind of money around for coaches and GM’s. LOL

Happy Bday Coach K. 63 years of age is the perfect time to build a VERY comfortable nest egg to retire on.

David, he will turn down that offer because he already makes that kind of money when you include all of his endorsements along with his salary at Duke. Keep in mind, 2 more years and he will the the #1 of all time in college hoops. Salary caps and player attitudes determine championships at the NBA level. Whatever he saw when he coached the olympic team sealed his decision remain at Duke until he is ready to stop coaching. He uses the Olympic team to fill the void of coaching top athletes without giving up what he really loves at Duke. I dont think he turned down the Lakers, Kobe and $40 million to coach the nets.
