The Whole Is Not Equal to the Sum of Its Parts

You've heard it or read it before: how can a team with this much, admittedly young, talent be on course to be the worst team in NBA history? Anthony Macri of the highly respected Basketball Prospectus takes a crack. While noting "the presence of a few pieces who could be starters on championship-caliber teams, Brook Lopez and Courtney Lee" plus others, the team lacks veteran leadership and a good coach.

its easy to see that we have no scorers every is a role player except for brook, no one on this team is an all star type player that can guarantee you 20pts a night.

Harris was an all-star who averaged 20 pts a game last year. A lot of this is a bad situation. You pick and choose who you’re going to keep.

WAS. And Bobby Simmons was Most Improved Player of the year once. We see how well he blossomed.

Lopez is the only keeper on this team, everyone else, including Harris, who be bothered to play defense, is not.
“the team lacks veteran leadership and a good coach”
This is the problem, added with management’s kiddie games.
This season was lost due to Thorn and Vandeweghe not caring enough to make sure that player and team development came first and foremost over backstage power struggles. A coach, regardless if it was Loyer or someone else, should have been put in place with an emphasis on coaching and teaching these kids. None of that happened. At this point we should be talking about how this guy improved, that guy improved, instead we’re at all star break watching kids get tossed under the bus and demanding for Kiki’s head on a platter.
Kudos Rod and Kiki, you’ve done masterful work.

I blame Stern and the NBA for not approving Proky two months ago. We have a situation were nobody knows what is going on, management or players and of course fans.
Seems nobody is in a rush to rescue the Nets.

Good article, although I question his highlighting Lee as a real building block.

This article pretty much says what I’ve been thinking but makes it even more concrete.
I agree that Lee is a keeper…if he can be happy here. If not, you’ve got to ship him out as a piece of a big deal. This year or next.
And the writer also has a good grasp of the limited potential of CDR. He scored early in the year, on a lot of shots, because there was pretty much no one else around to take them. He’s just OK with some obvious holes in his game. But his Twitter presences means we hav a few over-the-top supporters here. And those cause corresponding over-the-top haters on the other side. The truth about CDR lies in the middle: He’s just average with some modest promise.
But to avoid setting the loss record, the Nets have to bring in a coach with some kind of intensity and commitment to some style of defense.

Great article. Really hit the nail on the head. It is very refreshing to see something that is objective. Some of our Nets fans are either too emotionally involved or ignorant to see things as they are.
