Jarvis Hayes: Still Unemployed, Still Nets' Cap Hold

Al Iannazzone caught up with Georgia native Jarvis Hayes while covering the Nets vs. Hawks Tuesday.  Although he was approached by the Knicks, Spurs and Bulls, and his rights are still held by the Nets, Hayes remains unemployed. Part of the reason, apparently, is that he wants a guaranteed contract.

Hayes says he's been in touch with the Nets, but not about joining the team.  He's talked to them about the progress of  trade negotiations.  The Nets had proposed using Hayes in the Carmelo Anthony trade talks back in preseason.  By hanging on to Hayes' Bird Rights, the Nets could include him in a sign-and-trade.

I don't know about you guys here but...

I really like Jarvis. I wouldn’t mind him starting at the 3 right now.

I’m with you. Always liked the man,

"No, we have to start getting wins. At the end of the day there isn't any asterisk that said they played hard in this game, it was close here. It's an L or a W. We put ourselves in a position to win and it's time to win those games." - Kris Humphries

At this point – that makes no sense – sorry. Always liked Hayes, even when he was drafted.

It seems the Nets screwed up a little bit with Outlaw. Hopefully he will just become a high paid bench player if the Nets can upgrade that position, or if somehow D. James develops into a solid offensive player.

That said, Hayes can’t be your NBA starter. If the Nets are going to win 25-30 games, James should and will get the majority or at least half of the time at the 3. At the end of the day, Outlaw, Hayes, and probably James too, are bench players. The Nets need to upgrade from those types of guys as starters to be contenders IMO.

particularly the way

Keyon is playing this year…and its the same issue with Hayes: teams can’t trust them to play the needed minutes because of a history of injuries.

Hayes....NOPE!

Another just OK player, who was severly damaged by last year’s 12 win season. But he is not better than either Graham or Outlaw. He should have gone to play overseas, to at least collect a paycheck.

the collective wisdom

of NBA general managers is that he isn’t even worth a guaranteed minimum players contract.

The same holds true for Simmons, Hassell, Boone. Whether that is fair or not, it’s true.

by Net Income on Dec 8, 2010 8:40 AM EST up reply actions

I know that these guys want to scapegoat the Nets and last year's debacle

but lets be real:

Hayes: oft injured, not really good
Simmons: horrible
Hassel: Good guy, but not really good or useful if he can’t physically handle his match up
Boone: another good guy, who I think we could have kept on instead of paying Petro, but he’s not very good other than rebounding.

If these guys were good, they’d be paid. It’s as simple as that.

Kris Humpries, a member of last year’s team, will get a nice contract from someone next season because he can actually contribute to the team in other ways aside from upping the overall average age of the team like the four players that I mentioned.

Realistically

Hayes would have been a stop gap for this year instead outlaw. We would have been worse(if thats possible), but a better draft pick and soooo much more flexibility for the offseason. Idk but there is a better way to do things

The Outlaw signing looks like it is going to become a major thorn in the Nets side in coming seasons. My expectation is that he becomes the third SF off the bench by mid season. I expect TWill to be starting at the SF position within a week as we desperately need the versatility and the athleticism that he provides. And judging from the progress of Damian James lately (last night he was spectacular when on the court) he will end up as the #2 SF.

by Ryan243 on Dec 8, 2010 8:20 AM EST reply actions

no it isn't

carrying a player who’s 26 (and does have a good record as a sixth man) and making $7 million is not a “major thorn”. A “major thorn” is someone who makes $12 or $15 million and is washed up and can’t be traded for value…players like Rip Hamilton, Baron Davis and Elton Brand all qualify for that description.

by Net Income on Dec 8, 2010 8:38 AM EST up reply actions

Trade Outlaw and then watch

him blossom with another team. The Nets need a leader on the court. Harris and Lopez are not leaders. They make good sidekicks but all you have to do is look at them and know they are not natural leaders… Our team has no swagger, no toughness, no clue !

If T-Will had half a brain, maybe he could help us in the leadership, toughness department, but I doubt he will !

Outlaw IMO

can still be a useful player if used correctly, as in stretches as a shooter at either the 3 or 4 off of the bench.

That’s expensive for a bench player, but it is what it is.

though I do wonder how it affects him, or any player, in terms of accruing enough years for pension, I think NBA players have a pension plan.
