Ex-Net Picks Overseas
The Nets draft choices between 2003 through 2007 are playing for the most part in obscure locations or about to.
--Zoran Planinic is playing for Khimki in the Russian and Euroleagues, averaging 11 points on 61% shooting along with 3 assists. Khimki is a Moscow suburb. He had previously played at CSKA Moscow, Prokhorov's old team.
--Tamar Slay is playing for Umana Reyer Venezia in Italy's Lega2, averaging 15 points and shooting 43% from deep. Umana plays outside Venice.
--Christian Drejer is retired after multiple ankle surgeries.
--Antoine Wright was waived by the Kings. The Cavs worked him out but declined to sign him. He is now headed to China.
--Mile Ilic is playing for the team he played for when the Nets drafted him, FMP Zeleznik Belgrade in Serbia. He is averaging 6.5 points and 3.8 rebounds in 14 minutes.
--Marcus Williams is playing for Yenesei Krasnoyarsk in the Russian league. He is averaging 20.9 points, 4.3 assists...and 3.7 turnovers. Krasnoyarsk is deep in Siberia
--Josh Boone is playing for Zhejiang Chouzhou, which is in a coastal city south of Shanghai. He is averaging a double-double, 14.6 points and 12.4 rebounds...and hitting nearly 60% of his foul shots.
--Hassan Adams is not listed as playing anywhere this season.
--Sean Williams is playing for the Texas Legends of the D-League. He is averaging 15.8 points, 10 rebounds and 3.1 blocks. The Legends play outside Dallas, where Williams grew up.

Very interesting stuff...
Thanks for that. One of the most interesting ideas for a fan post I have seen in a while. I would like to hear about some of the other players listed above….
How about Marcus Williams. That almost sounds like a joke. He is stuck in Siberia, LOL! I Googled mapped it and it is way out there. Beautiful countryside.

and remember this
ALL of these guys, except for Drejer, made more than $1 million in the NBA.
You’re starting to see a lot of guys head for China where in the past they would head to Europe. European economies in bad shape. China in good shape.
i liked boki nachbar
i’d still like to see him playing over outlaw
because he sucks

Scouting
There is a reason why all of these players couldn’t make it in the NBA, and if we had better scouting back during those years, we might have drafted better players. Right after fixing our coaching staff, Proky made sure to rehire and augment our scouting department. It doesn’t take much to know who to draft, when you have very high draft choices, but after seven, eight or nine, and into the second round, scouting is the difference between drafting players who just might pan out, or Zoran, Sean or Marcus. Where is Zoubeck? He must be better than Petro?

Not defending their picks
I was screaming when they drafted Wright over Granger. But they were selecting out of the lottery. Still, they should have done a better job.

So, who if any of them, is likely to return?
You would think there would be a market for Boone. Tall, athletic, good guy. FT% seems to have improved.
Sean Williams ever getting out of the D-League?
Good for Josh
I bet he will make it back to the show. Has the physical tools to succeed but needs to toughen up mentally.

he plead guilty
to stealing laptops at UConn!
I love the fact that his passes still go awry at a phenomenal rate. 3.7 turnovers in the RUSSIAN League!!
exactly why new jersey ended up 12-70
besides kenyon martin, richard jefferson, krstic, and nochbar, the nets drafted the worst collection of talent this decade up to the 2008 draft
Lets just 68 and say I owe you one

Draft day trade
which means Nets drafted Griffin for Houston, or at least knowing that Houston was willing to make a trade. Nets told Houston to draft Jefferson, Collins and cough, cough Brandon (who) Armstrong with Hassell and some guy who would later be known as Agent 0 still out there. Some scouts wanted Arenas (best combo guard available), but one of the top scouts shot down the idea.

yes we did
after the Nets drafted Griffin, Thorn called Carroll Dawson of the Rockets who he knew 1) was willing to trade his three first round picks and 2) wanted Griffin desperately.
He asked Dawson if he was interested. Dawson said he was and Thorn then stayed on the phone with him through the draft, picking for Houston at #13 (Jefferson), #18 (Collins) and #23 (Armstrong).
I believe when he was given the opportunity to start NI, he produced many double doubles, did he not?

Besides our prized center, our drafting in the past decade can be classified as poor. There are select cases where we made great choices for the number of the pick- Chris “Buckets” Douglas-Roberts, Terrence Williams- but then traded them for virtually nothing, especially in the case of CD-R.

Nets got Sasha Vujacic and two first round picks
for TWill, a 35 year old PF who had played in four games and two second round picks.
That is hardly “virtually nothing”…and TWill has yet to play one second in six games with the Rockets.
It really is nothing
Those picks are utter crap and are at best throw ins in a bigger deal, but not game changing assets by any stretch of the imagination. Drazen Vujachuck is what he is, he wouldn’t even dress for the Rockets, and he will be gone after this year, he’s just an expiring contract.
Well that doesn't make any sense
According to 82games.com, statistically speaking you have a better shot of drafting a star/solid/role player that sticks on your team between picks 14-30 (or 16-30) then you do with those second round picks. From a pure basketball standpoint, the swapping of picks was a great move by the Nets.
