Nets Battle Perceptions in Brooklyn
Even as Barclays Center construction goes horizontal as well as vertical --with steel for the first floor being installed last week-- there remains within the sports industry, among the team’s fans and maybe even a few players-- confusion about the move to Brooklyn.
Sports Business Journal reports the perception of a clouded future has caused the organization to hire an ad agency with the sole purpose of making sure everyone knows "we're here and there's a lot going on." The first step was a reception last week, hosted by Bruce Ratner and Nets chairman Christophe Charlier, to dispel the confusion and let 50 sponsors and season ticket holders know the arena will be done by summer of 2012. Meanwhile, Norman Oder writes that by one metric, the arena is slightly behind schedule but by another, it's slightly ahead.
- Barclays Center pitch: We’re here and have a lot going on - Terry Lefton - Sports Business Journal
- Nets selling Brooklyn to Carmelo? - Mark Miller - Yahoo! Sports
- When will the area open? The goalposts are already shifting slightly, thanks to "current schedule disputes" - Norman Oder - Atlantic Yards Report

Interesting, of course there will be naysayers
There always are, sometimes just because they have the opportunity to complain about something, they will.
I’m just guessing here, but I have to imagine that the original Yankee Stadium, Shea Stadium, New Yankee Stadium, Citi Field, etc. all had people who complained and fought against it.

-Say man when I was growing up we wanted a Jacuzzi, we had to fart in the tub.
....or, if you cannot post it
Provide a bullet point summary?
some excerpts
Nets and Barclays Center officials and partners laid out a plan for an arena that was well beyond the "proposed" stage. Instead, they showcased a building that will host more than 200 events in its first year, including about 45 Nets games; 48 shows from Feld Entertainment’s stable of brands, which includes the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, Disney on Ice, and various indoor motorsports shows; 12 boxing events through an association with Golden Boy Promotions; 25 college basketball and hockey games through an affiliation with IMG College; at least 20 concerts from Live Nation and other promoters; and two to three tennis events through Lagardère Unlimited. There is also thought of bringing in pro hockey games.
Privately, building officials are pointing to an opening in midsummer of 2012, with perhaps as many as a week’s worth of concerts, which would certainly include Jay-Z, since he owns a piece of the Nets.
those Jay Z concerts will be massive
and I’m intrigued about Golden Boy holding cards there as well.
Excuse my ignorance NI but if I’m right the Nets should be making serious $$$ from these events being in the Barclays, right?

Yes they will
When the owner of the teams owns significant stake in the building (45% I believe) and can gain control of 80% of the arena ( I believe)

Not only is a Jay-Z a Nets Co-Owner
He is also a Live Nation artist (regarding the Live Nation affiliation mentioned above)…all the more reason for Jay to open the house!
he has some insane deal with Live Nation
they want to fill 225 dates and are well on their way.
—45 Nets games (plus playoffs!!)
—12 boxing dates
—25 college basketball and hockey
—48 family show dates
—20 concerts
That’s 150. They can play NHL games there but will have to rip out so many seats that the NHL might want to let a team, even the Islanders, play there…14,500 seats isn’t much bigger than Nassau.
I thought the building would be too small for NHL
Doesn’t the NHL have average attendance standards that have to be met to constitute a team moving to a new arena?

Did you hear about Nelson Peltz possibly buying the NY Islanders?
Here’s some background on him: He’s 67, Brooklyn-born, former owner of Snapple. He’s currently the owner of Trian Fund Management. and on Wendy’s Board of Directors. He has homes in Bedford, Palm Beach, FL, and in France.
He is interested in possibly purchasing the NY Islanders from Charlie Wang. You wonder if Bruce Ratner and company are working behind the scenes to make this happen where Peltz purchases the Islanders and moves them into the Barclays Center?
Capacity for the Nassau Coliseum is 16,250 for Hockey. The Barclays Center could work for the Islanders should they decide to go in there with the Nets.
What are your thoughts on a possible purchase by Peltz of the Islanders? Would he move them West to Brooklyn. That would make so much sense in the fact that its close to the LIRR (Atlantic Terminal), and the convenience would be much much better than it is for them now out in Uniondale.

anyone ever see a Jay-Z show live?
i saw him at Coachella (2010) and despite him being somewhat out-of-place amongst the hipster / indie rock scene that IS coachella, he killed it. straight killed it. he played so many songs, dating back so far, it was crazy. like a crash course in Jay-Z… live… with beyonce!
Next lawsuit can change that
On Wednesday, there will be a court hearing that will challenge the EIS finding by the ESDC. If it’s ruled that the findings are not accurate, there is a possibility that a stop work order can be placed on all current construction. Such a ruling can throw a wrench in the whole process. Then again, only time will tell what will actually happen, not some fanatics who keep promoting it.
Won't happen

Sorry Tal
Won’t happen. The stop work order request by DDDB and Brooklyn Speaks was filed on the basis that work should be stopped until the ESDC produced the required “findings” requested by the judge….except that ESCD surprised the plaintiffs and has already produced the findings, and will submit them to the judge in advance of the hearing on Wednesday. This judge is not in a position to opine of the veracity of the findings, she only has the power to request them. In New York State, the judiciary is explicitly required to defer to administrative agencies such as the ESDC.
It’s a longshot, but I guess hypothetically, the judge can go crazy and try to overrule the ESDC, but she will almost certainly be overruled on appeal.
If anything, the DDDB’s of the world would be better served spending their energy trying to change New York State law on the legislative level up on Albany….but as far as Atlantic Yards is concerned, that horse has already left the barn.

The photograph above is very telling as to how efficient this construction project is being executed.
Despite the apparent delay caused by Daniel Goldstein, they have gotten around the problem.
It looks like they are simultaneously putting up steel for 1/2 of the structure, while other workers complete the remaining foundation, including where the DG Condo was located.
Then, probably by the end of January (when Melo plays against his old team) there should be steel everywhere.
DG is still fighting this
As a matter of fact, he was at that ESDC hearing in the city last Thursday, and Oder has even linked the video with him giving his input from that day over on the AYR.

really?
I’m shocked that’s he’s still fighting this. Is it even worth it anymore with construction already underway?
Man if I had that kind of payout, I’d be somewhere in Amsterdam, having fallen off of the wagon at one of the cafes and having nightly excursions into “De Wallen”. It’s admirable to fight the good fight but nothing short of a nuke being let off near that construction site will stop Barclays from being built.

NI - please clarify
I thought money is not an issue with Prokhorovs involvement now?
-Say man when I was growing up we wanted a Jacuzzi, we had to fart in the tub.
I think NI already addressed those claims months ago, so no need for anyone to worry.
I don’t think it has anything to do with Barclays (but future AY projects) and in the worst case of Ratner screwing up, then Proky could get more control.
And as far as Chinese citizens being told Bull to get their money, that is probably something hard to prove/enforce on foreign soil. Those wealthy citizens are probably only interested in getting Permanent Residence in the USA and some of them may be providing Bull themselves, in their applications, about how they are going to create a certain number of jobs here. Its a good thing that there is a mechanism to bring money INTO the USA from China, when all we normally here about is the reverse.
Something I need to know
Did you even bother to watch that video or did you refuse to, because you know he is going to say something that doesn’t agree with you? There are many others in the opposition that have spoken out as well there. Unfortunately, I wasn’t there, because it was when I was working at the time, but I would have been there if I wasn’t.

Everytime I answer your questions, you refuse to answer mine and sometimes act very defensive on it. Oder has been known for doing extensive research on this project, and he is credited a lot for doing this. I will believe what he says more than any of your ramblings any day. Just like me, he doesn’t say something that happens to gome from some kind of a bumper sticker. We should all give Order a big round of applause for his series known as An Anatomy of a Shady Deal. If there was something like Wikileaks exposing this, then just about the entire state would be all against it and see Ratner for who he really is. This is why I believe in populism over elitism.

Fact vs. Opinion
Honestly, do you have any idea what a question is as opposed to a declarative statement? Or how about a statement of opinion vs. declarative statement? Or maybe even a statement said in jest vs a declarative statement.
You take everything as absolute fact. I can imagine watching a game with you (“Hey Tal, I think the Nets have a shot to win tonight” …. you don’t know that is true! slander! blasphemy! security!!!!!")
I would like to see your evidence
I keep on hearing claims such as the one above that DG arrived in a stretch limo, but see nothing proving that true. Until I see proof, I will consider it a false claim. However, I can prove that Bertha Lewis once arrived to a hearing in a Cadilac, because that was proven by the media and even photographed. That was a proven fact. Where I come from, you have to give me proof and it can’t be a statement that you have concocted in the last minute just to answer it, something that is possibly FCR funded, a blanket statement, or even just good faith, because none of those answer my questions. Show me actual evidence of such a claim, and then I will believe you.

In the video, Daniel Goldstein doubts whether enough money is available to complete the project
Net Income has reported here that Prokhorov will lend Ratner the money needed to complete the project. Therefore, is Goldstein questioning how deep Prokhorov’s pockets really are? Or is Goldstein not talking about the arena and he thinks Prokhorov is under no obligation to lend money to complete the components of the project affecting the surrounding area? I don’t know enough of the facts. But, certainly, there is enough money on hand to complete the construction of the arena, so I assume Goldstein is talking about the surrounding area — apartments and such. If so, why would the court conduct a work stoppage on the construction of the arena when that is not the issue to begin with?
Please, leave the arena construction alone. I don’t care about the ancillary stuff. Just let the Nets move in for 2012-2013 season.
Nets = Global
Knicks = Local
Winner of "TWill is not in Nets' future" Clairvoyance Award
If that's so true.....
Then why use the EB-5 program to begin with? For what reason does Ratner need to go to China to get them to help them the project when it’s said Proky has the money? If that was the case, then such a program wouldn’t be needed and be seen as unecessary. Again, you read up on the AYR on the Anatomy of a Shady Deal where Oder sums it up very well.

Who he is
DG is known as one of the main fighters against this project. He had bought a condo in his building only to find out that months later it was being in the footprint of a project that Ratner has wanted for his own personal gain. For about 7 years he has actually stayed in his building despite the fact that everyone else there left long before that. He helped find a group known as DDDB (Develope Don’t Destroy Brooklyn) that will lead the fight against this project. Numerous times, they have brought up lawsuits to explain how abusive this project has been. Durring the time he was still living at his place, he met a woman in the protests and even married her and got a daughter out of it. Although he did end up moving out, he was never viewed as a sell out especially when he was the last one to leave, plus he never signed a gag order. Despite no longer living at his condo, which is now torn down, he is still going to events involving this project and continuing the fight, because although lost the battle, he still believes that he can win the war in the end.
by Tal Barzilai on Dec 20, 2010 6:36 PM EST up reply actions
why do they care so much about ratner building there
how is this project abusive, hey im not a big fan of eminent domain thing either but he took the money
Living under a rock?
You weren’t aware that a state government agency is helping in acquiring that property when in fact that it’s privately owned. The definition of eminent domain is in fact taking property for the use of the public. This pretty much means that it must be for a project that is publicly owned, not privately owned hence the term eminent domain abuse. Also, this project is using corporate welfare in which taxpayer dollars are being used for this. In other words, it’s not Ratner’s money nor is it Proky’s money, it’s comming from the state otherwise known as our money. Please do some research on this for the future so that you know, because I am sort of tired of explaining this over and over again. BTW, it was never anyone’s intent to sell, they were only given two choices and that was either sell to him now or lose it through eminent domain, while just saying no wasn’t an option.

Goldstein
Goldstein is a self centered jerk. He was always all about driving up the sale price of his condo and nothing else. The delays he caused screwed every hard working Brooklynite, trying to get ahead and hoping to benefit from the Arena. I guess he doesn’t have to have a real job anymore, since he got his big pay day. He should shut up and go away. Nobody wants to hear his opinions. He should be forced to move to New Jersey by all his ex-neighbors, who have or will benefit from the Arena, that should have been completed two years ago, if it were for Goldstein.
Paul from Sunny Delray Beach, Florida
Enough with that already!
Paul, I have disproven this countless times, and I still can’t believe that you still ride that myth despite that. None of the websites that oppose this have called him a sell out. That video I linked of him was to show proof that he is still fighting this despite the fact that he no longer has his property. Also, it’s been disproven countless times that if any jobs were to go locals they would only be either minium wage or temporary while relocated employees will get the big jobs. You wouldn’t even be working on the construction of this project unless you are part of the union that Ratner already hired otherwise it will never go to you at all. BTW, Neil deMause, who is the author of Field of Schemes, has repeatedly disproven the claim that sports facilities, especially the publicly funded ones, help the communities they are in, but rather hurt them. Just like Oder, he too has done extensive studies for this. For the unteenth time, he did NOT sign any gag order, so he is still allowed to fight this no matter what. Then again, the only you can ever understand the way he feels is if you happen to be the victim of what he was of.

I'd sure like to think so
I averaged 20, 9, 2 blocks and 7 assists in grade 11. In our only game so far this year I had 54 points on 27 for 29 shooting, 19 rebounds, 9 assists, 2 blocks.
I’m going to be honest though, having trouble getting noticed because I had an injury a while back that was supposed to be career ending (doctor told me I would be walking with a cain and an ankle brace on for the rest of my life, a few months ago I sent him a card with a picture of me dunking). That and I’m in Saskatchewan… Playing ball for a school with 109 kids from grade 1 to 12.
I did do an online interview for a sports website last year, I think you can find it fairly easily by googling Joseph Chiliak. I’ve been trying to post a highlight reel video on youtube… But the internet is too slow here lol.

Work and dedication
Like I said, had a bad injury… Shattered the bottom bit of my fibula, right on the ball of my ankle, by slipping on ice on my front step. Spent 13 weeks in a cast and have been working out constantly ever since then to get to the point where I no longer even limp, and can dunk again… I know hard work and dedication lol.
Yes, I am in high school, and no, I have not been scouted by any colleges yet (colleges in Canada don’t really scout basketball players all that often). I’m hoping my play this year will change that… If not I’m applied to pre-law and will be trying to make a team the hard way.

Oh
And to answer your question about my position, that’s tricky. I’m 6’5, 188 pounds and ideally a 2 guard, but coach has me play everything from center (I fight hard for rebounds) to point guard (the ability to draw the double and open someone up is huge in our league, makes us a fairly decent team).

Things I have been accused of
It seems that whenever I state my view on something, I am always being seen as being slandered just for taking such a view. Just because I do not support this project, doesn’t mean that I want to see the rail yards left undeveloped as well as being against jobs and affordable housing, and the same goes for the rest of the opposition. I have actually looked at this project in depth rather than just instantly like it for eye candy. Do you want to know something? I have been call many things for even other issues just for taking the other side. For example, if I am for rebuilding the Twin Towers instead of the Freedom Tower, many of claimed that I am against the latest designs. If there are other projects I don’t support, I am just considered being anti-developement when that is hardly ever true. Why stop there when there are other things people have been calling me when I don’t take their sides. If I believe that Iraq and Afghanistan Wars are wrong, I have been called for being against the troops. If I believe that the Democrats are a better political party, then I must be supporting the terrorists. Does supporting the right for Israel to exist as a country mean that I am for the oppression of the Palestinians? Next, I probably can’t support anything such as labor unions, social security, public healthcare, or affordable housing and oppose tax breaks for the rich unless I happen to be a Communist. Can only heretics support same sex marriage and abortion? Do I have to be anti-transit if I am against congestion pricing? Must only those that are against the envirnoment be against the use bicycles and their infrastructure? Am I racist just for criticizing the view of a minority? The list can go on, but I will stop there. This shows how much I have been attacked just for taking a view, and have been ganged up by so many that are so fanatical to this site. Sometimes, I feel that I have to open like Michael Moore and give a debunking to start the conversation. If I had the choice to be some bandwagoner or an “Honest Abe”, I will choose the Honest Abe over a bandwagoner any day, because I will not lie about something like this. Overall, I don’t have anything against those that disagree with me, it’s those that have attacked me that have been crossing the line and overstepping boundaries. You guys had your say, so let me have mine, and if you don’t like it, then don’t read, because it’s not like anyone is forcing you to do so.
